Hi there boys and girls. For months every1 has been goin on about T68i not having poly ringtones and no java and I agree, its a shame.
However, yesterday I pickedup a Siemens S55 and god dam its good. It has a list of features longer than King Kongs penis and its twice as beefy ;-) If any1 has a chance to look at this phone, I would strongly recommend you do as it kicks my T68i into space!!!
Walrus :-)

yeah i have seen the S55 around. i don't like the look of the camera though. but i guess, don't judge a book by it's cover!!!

I bought this phone (S55) yesterday and have to agree that it is a really good phone, it even feels more quality in my hands than my T68 does
Posted by B@RTje
Who has more info about the s55.. like what kind of screen.. 256? 4096??

Posted by jnx

Above is a link to some more S55 data on the phone itself.

THanks seems like a Realy great phone.
But it doesn't look nice, also doesn't seem to beat the t68's screen, i think i'll get a replacement for my t68, but not that one
Posted by 2tangy
Here's a comparison of the S55 against the T68i, stat for stat... you can even see how much smaller the S55 is compared to the T68i by clicking on the "Compare Sizes" link at the top of the page...

For me, SE T68i is greater than Siemens S55. I won't replace my T68i for the name of Java, by the way, it won't make me a better person naman e. If I am going to buy a new handset unit, then it will be a colored phone with 4096 colors and does have a polyponic ringing tones.
Posted by GREK
if you gave up your t68 over that..sucker:)
edit: yes you should have gotten a newer phone with better screen +polyponic(that cant be right? blame maestro since i cant spell it either:P)but thats just my opinion

polyphonic ringtones.
Posted by Sam79
I wonder... Does it got bluetooth?
Posted by LadFromWales85
Yes it has bluetooth, but the phone was released over a year after the T68, and has nothing extra added to it. I am a bit temped as I am on my 5th T68 now, this one seems to be fine, but the lights on the numbers are dim, is annoying me.
I don't know whether to get another one again, or go for a S55, or get a refund and use my old 6210 untill some new fones come out....

I said in this forum something like 13 month ago : "as soon as Siemens had a tri-band color phone, I’ll throw away my T68..."
And it’s exactly what I did 2 weeks ago…
Now, I own a superb Siemens S55, and this phone is unbelievable
It has everything the T68 has, plus a lot of other features like :
- Java
- Polyphonic ringtones
- The possibility to remove the bloody "operator name" (now I see very well my background…!!!)
- 16 fields into the contact (like street, city, zip… and a lot more)
- Notes (like in Outlook…)
- Hand-free speaker...
And Bluetooth is working a lot easier than the T68… / syncing with Outlook is working really fine… / A cable to connect the phone and a PC is included in the box… / The camera has a flash, and it’s quite useful…
Ok, it has 256 colors only… but I don’t really care, because as the phone accept .bmp images, the result on the screen is a lot better than in the T68…
The only very small thing I miss from my Ex-T68… is the "battery remaining time" when you press down the volume slider…!!!
Posted by LadFromWales85
What is the build quality like?
I find the quality on the T68's to be fairly high, some of them do creak in certain places, such as around the screen tho.
an S55 in the UK is about £10-£20 lower than a T68i, so I could easily take my T68 back and buy one, only bought a T68m on friday, but I can get the extra £100 if I decide on the S55.
This is my 6th T68m/i now in two weeks, all have had different faults, perhaps it is just me. The one I have now seems fine, but the keylights seem very dim in comparison to my previous Lunar Gray, I have a Ziroccan Gold now
Thanx

@Rolud
Some important questions...
Can you change the ringtone for SMS messages?
What does the phone do for a screensaver? (Does it have a white on black clock like the T68?)
Can you send (either via IR or BT) Java applets to it yourself or is it only possible to get them via download from a wap page?
Are they games on there anygood?
I'll probably think of some more later
Thank you in advance for your reply as I might consider getting this phone
Posted by Rolud
@2tangy
Waouu… that’s a lot of questions…
1. Yes, you can change the SMS ringtone (any polyphonic or “standard”…) and you can also adjust the volume.
2. When I receive the phone, an “on animation”, an “off animation”, an “operator logo” and a “screensaver” were already put into the phone by “Swisscom” (the Swiss operator I’m using…) however it’s very easy to replace it…! You also have the choice to use the Siemens analogue clock in black and white AND, if so, you’ll have a small symbol showing any missed call, SMS, MMS, alarm…
3. I didn’t test the Java application… but I suppose you can, because you have in the box a small CD Rom with an application exactly like Windows Explorer, and you can add, move or delete whatever you want (with Bluetooth, IR or cable…) into any folder of the memory. BTW, into the Java folder, I have some .jad and .jar …!
4. About the game, you’ll find just one Java game… called “Magic Picture” and I didn’t find it really interesting…
One more thing about this phone : if you look at the comparison between the T68 and the S55, you’ll find first that the S55 is not a tri-band, but it is !! Then it doesn’t have voice call and voice memory but that’s wrong ! It does have both…
About the memory, it’s the same as the T68… about 1 Mb…
Posted by GREK
well now when you say this..it does seem pretty good. but still i dont know if i like the design:) dont like the t68 either but its better:P
Posted by LadFromWales85
At least you dont have to unlock the keypad to check if you have any messages or missed calls.
I have just ordered a datacable and ict-14 from SE for me fone, will have to faf around with them to get a refund on the products, which will be a mess, lol.
I am a bit tempted about the S55, but I have had 5 c35's, 2 M35's and 3 S35's and they were all crap. They all had a weak feeling to them, and had buggy firmware on all handsets, and developed faults too quick, within weeks for most of them
I really like the T68m, but the S55 does have some handy extras that make me tempted, like knowing about calls when in idle mode etc
Posted by Rolud
@LadFromWales85
Before my T68, I also had 18 months a S35i… and I liked the phone a lot !
A small precision : in idle mode with the S55, the coming symbol for something missing is always the same ! It means when you see it, you don’t know exactly what you missed until you unlock the phone…! After unlocking, you’ll see if it was a call, a SMS, a MMS or an alarm…
Anyway… it’s a lot more practical than nothing…
Posted by LadFromWales85
I am not sure what colour I want
Both phones seem to have large amounts of silver, so will look old quick.
I am more turned towards the Sterling Silver as it has black buttons. Am I right in thinking that the 6 top buttons dont light up!?!
What colour do you have? Is there anything missing on the phone that was on the T68i, anything extra, other than the obvious polytones and java
I did actually own a c35i for 13 months faultless, and a s35i for 8 months before selling it and getting a 6210, lasted longer than any of mt t68/m/i's!!!
Any other info you can give me to sway my decision?
I can get one with cam for £279.65 inc VAT
Thanxxxxxx
EDIT: does it have that crap battery low warning that the x35 range had, it even sounded when the phone was silent, and the phone usually turned off as the first warning was sounding

Thanks for all the information! I think I'm beginnging to like the S55 more and more
Also, one more question for now
@LadfromWales
Where can you get the S55 for that price? I've only seen £290ish and over...
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?action=info&p=29374&t=1020&l=3&AvdID=1&CatID=46&GrpID=6&s=pl (doesn't say if cam is included here at Komplett)
http://www.extele.net/view.asp?ID=316286
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=S55
Also, Phones4u have it in their website for £269 but they don't say if it includes the camera or not either
Thanks in advance to both of you guys

@LadFromWales85
Mine is silver, however I didn’t have the choice, because Swisscom had only this one at the moment I bought it…
About the light, you’re right ! The keypad has only 2 LED’s, under the 7 and the 9 keys… and sometimes it’s pretty hard to well see the keyboard ! (in fact, it’s not harder as with the T68m…
About Java, I tried this afternoon…! As a result, it works really fine…!!
What I did is :
- Download from Internet into the PC a game called “Asteroids”
- Extract the .exe to different folder (itself…) into the PC
- Copy the extracted folder to the Java folder of the S55 by Bluetooth
- Play the game… No problem and very easy…!! That’s pretty fun…!!!
About the battery warning… it’s just the same as all Siemens : it makes the noise three times and it shut down…
The thing I miss the most from my ex-T68 is maybe the “police size”…!! On the T68, I always had the small one… so on the beginning with the S55 it was a little bit strange to have those big letters…! Now I’m used to…! It’s just a shame that you can’t chose a little one… because when you surf Wap pages, the S55 had a small police and it’s just great…
@2tangy
Yes, it does have a voice call like the T68, but you can have 20 records only…
@all…
Posted by 2tangy
@ Rolud
Thanks for the Java and voice info
I got another question for you if you don't mind
Does it lag when moving between menus and typing in text like the T68 and T68i does? (or is it pretty quick?)
Posted by LadFromWales85
Does the battery low warning sound even when the phone is on silent?
That is a big deal, and will annoy me loads, cos it always seems to suddenly 'beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep'etc in the worst places it can
Thanx alot
Posted by @ngel
Can you tell me if the number of the personn who calls you appears ? I mean if my girlfriend is registered in my phone with Home, Mobile and Business phone numbers, will the S55 show me if she calls from home, office or the street with her mobile... ?
My previous T68m didn't have this function at the beginning and it was annoying

i've tested several siemens before, and i don't like them. signal isn't that good, buttons depends on the phone, some bugs here and there, mostly in wap, GPRS and EMS. i've tested, C25,S25,M35,M45,S45.
i would never buy siemens. i'm happy whit
T68 ist still the best phone except P800.
Posted by funlovinkrim
the siemans may have better ringtones but it looks like a brick and apparently Ericsson is looking at adding the poly sound and java to a new version of the T68 soon
Posted by Rolud
@2tangy
I find it pretty fast, and it’s definitely not as slow as the T68 is…
@LadFromWales85
That’s pretty hard to test for me, because I never shut down the phone…?!? However, into the profiles, you have a special mode called “Aircraft mode”, which will shut down the phone and deactivate all the songs and alarms… and maybe the “battery low warning” too…??
@@ngel
Unfortunately, you’ll see only the name of the caller ! However, in the “Calls received” folder, you’ll find from which number was the call made…!!
@Bart
That’s your choice if you don’t like Siemens ! My opinion is that the S55 is a lot better than any other
phone (except maybe the P800, but that’s a PDA and not a phone…!)… but that’s just mine !! BTW, I had my T68m 13 months… and during the first 8 months it was just a piece of crap… not even knowing how to do an apostrophe by itself… not having calling images… not having themes… and so on…
A least, by Siemens, everything is included since the day you buy it…
@funlovinkrim
You find the S55 is looking like a brick…???
And if the future T68 is looking like the T300… I’ll for sure stay with Siemens…!!!
BTW a new “poly” T68…?? When…?? In Year 2048…??
Posted by thalabel
I've got the S55 as well and it's dope... Better display and larger storage would be nice.
Posted by ThreeX
quote: BTW, I had my T68m 13 months… and during the first 8 months it was just a piece of crap… not even knowing how to do an apostrophe by itself… not having calling images… not having themes… and so on…
You can not blame the phone for user errors can you? Or did the above mentioned features magically appear after 8 months?
At least my t68i had them from day one. RTFM really helps sometimes even if it´s not necessary on Nokia phones.
Another thing is that _I_ think the Siemens (and t300) has a bad case of the uglies.. but discussing taste is rather pointless, let´s be happy to have a lot of choices instead!
Cheers!
Posted by Rolud
@ThreeX
It has nothing to do with “users errors” !!
I just had to wait until
made the MMS update (R2B025) before I had the calling image and themes… in June 2002… so 8 month after I bought my T68m…
Then I had to wait one more month to have the update R2E006, in order to have the T68 knowing how to do an apostrophe by itself…
In fact, I was wrong… I had 9 month a piece of crap…!!!
And if you bought your T68 after July 2002, you can’t imagine how it was before…!!!!
About what’ nice or what’s ugly… you’re right, it’s jus a matter of taste…!! And for me, the T300 is the ugliest phone ever made…!!!
Posted by ThreeX
@Rolud
Hrmm.. guess i owe you an apology dewd, got my T68i 3 weeks ago and assumed it was the same as earlier ones.
Oh well...
Posted by MrSavoy
The T68 came out way way before this "new" s55. While the S55 is a nice phone I am sure, its no ground breaker. It's basically a copy of the T68 with some added features no great shakes. They are about a year late imo. When the T68 replacement comes out in the spring this "new" S55 will look very very old. So please keep things in perspecitive, the T68 is stiil a kick ass phone even a year later.
Posted by Scoobydoo
Aaarghh-traiters!! I'm still a big t68 fan even after 11 months - i will wait for a se replacement
Posted by LadFromWales85
Where did you hear of a replacement, I aint heared nothing about that?
Surely something wudda leaked by now
Proof plz
Posted by ojsph
i dont like siemens..
Posted by Rolud
@MrSavoy
You’re right, the T68 is now more than a year old and the S55 is, like you said “basically a copy”… however, with the S55 I didn’t had to wait more than 9 months to have all the features…!! (and it has a lot more than the T68…!!)
So, basically, the T68 is not more than 6 month old…!!
And if
make a “T68 replacement” with poly and Java + a lot of other nice features (like the S55 Anyway… I’m pretty happy with my S55 right now…
Posted by jcpsad
it simply sucks!!!
Posted by Ludwig van Beethoven
Does Siemens S55 have a melody composer ?
How much does Siemens S55 cost in other countries ?
Price in Sweden : 3900 SEK ( = 400 USD / 260 GBP )
Posted by 2tangy
In the UK we can get it for £279
Posted by MrSavoy
Rlud your just making yourself secure in your purchase decision about buying the S55 and thats why you feel the need to dog the T68. I on the other hand am very secure in my owing the T68 and feel no need to defend it anymore. Go on and play up that phone, apparently it needs your support. gg.
Posted by Rolud
@MrSavoy
You’re wrong !
And, BTW, I don’t care if people like or dislike Siemens… the same for the T68…!!
You know, I’m really amazed to see how hard T68 owner’s are trying to convince themselves that the T68 is still the greatest phone on the market today…!! Maybe one day they’ll be wise enough to open their eyes…
And BTW, I don’t really understand why you said that the S55 needs my support…?? Because with all the features it has, this phone doesn’t need any support…
Posted by senninha
LadFromWales,
Go to Settings\Locks\Auto Keylock and switch it off if you don't want the keypad locking by itself. I find it irritating too.
Posted by mases
? Most say that siemens makes the ugliest phones . Sorry but thats the no lie
Posted by 701
the features on this phone are simply amazing! they ar reliable, the battery lasts long enough and the price is very competitive! And the guy saying t68 was crap 4 a year is right.U all KNOW that still to this date, the t68 is slow,slow,slow, the sms imput sucks and even the moving between the menus is hard.so, i"d choose this siemens:)
Posted by Jison
I always bug my friends for having siemens so no way I'm gonna change brand
Posted by haki
Siemens are respectable and the S55 appears to be good BUT it is very similar to the T68 after one year! Too late!
