Best Phone For Music?

I bet there is a topic like this, even many, but I can't find them, cause the search engine uses any of the key words.

So I have an iPod, but it's getting too big, compared to all the new stuff on the market - too lazy to carry it around. What I want is a 2in1 device - a phone with a good mp3 player, actually a near perfect mp3 player with a phone just in case. So I have 2 questions:

1. - Is it worth it to change my K810i for W910i? Do I get better player interface and sound quality?
2. - Anything better than W910i for music? I'll be using it with Shure e4g (analog to e4c) so I need some sort of a converter to 3.5mm stereo jack.

Any comments are appreciated.
Thank you.

that's depends on you. In w910, you'll get better interface but worse sound quality, I mean speaker sound quality, not in headset, as w910's sound is cracking in high volume and has too much treble and there's not much differences about sound clarity in headset. Well, that's my opinion.

Posted by oddie k750
don't even think of replacing the k810 for the w910! Let's admit it-sound quality is pretty much the same- consider just buying bettter headphones or a differnet phone, but k810-w910 is definitely a downgrade!

Ok, going to a phone for your music, you will notice a significant drop in sound quality from your iPod. The sound is fine, just not as defined or clear as a dedicated music player. You won't find any phone that can properly compete with a dedicated music player yet.

However, if you don't mind a bit of quality loss then in my opinion you should keep your K810i as Walkman phones are not really noticeably better in sound quality than the rest of the Sony Ericsson range. You won't notice a difference. If you want a fastport to 3.5mm jack, then but yourself a better quality SE headset as many have a 3.5mm jack on the remote. If you do end up buying a W910i or similar, it will come with the fastport to 3.5mm jack wired headset.

So if you really care about your sound quality and appreciate what your iPod produces, then stick with it or buy a new, smaller music player. If you don't mind, I'd suggest stay with your K810i. (and thats coming from a W910i user... Its not that its crap, its just that the quality is the same and the K810i has the superior camera.)

@ocean21
I don't care about the speaker - I almost never use it.

@oddie k750
Might stick to K810i, but still W910i is much smaller, has better walkman navigation menu and the best thing about - you don't have to scroll down to the end of the list - you can just type what you are looking for and it will find it for you. My iPod doesn't have this feature, what's left for K810i.
And I believe my headphones (Shure e4g) are good enough.

@Muhammad-Oli
Well the main problem is I prefer carrying just one device. Can you really feel the difference between an iPod and a se walkman phone for let's say 196kbit mp3? Is it so apparent?

Yeah my music is encoded at 256kb/s and I can tell the difference very easily. Mobile phones just can't compare to a dedicated music player yet. But like I say, if you don't mind a drop in quality, then by all means consider a mobile phone. However, I would test a phone first to see what you think of it.

For SE, look for a W890

Sure, but its not out yet

Seeing that your topic doesn't specify any particular manufacturer there is one phone that is better than the rest. As a phone it doesn't quite deliver but as a music player it is damn good- the iphone.

Too Freakin' Big

@ muhammad oli - have you tried the nokia 5310, 5610 or any other with the decicated music chip? How apparent is a differnce in audio quality compared to
1. dedicated mp3
2. se phones
(yes I've read many times about lab tests tha t easily proved nokias to be better- but how does it SOUND)

Posted by hgautam
If music is all what you want in your phone, I would say go for the Samsung i450... If price is not a problem, you can also consider W960 but with additional bluetooth headphones from SE...

Posted by ros-mari
sorry to interrupt, but I had a 5610 and the sound of my mp3 was FAR clearer and better than walkmans w580 and w910 with the same in-ear headphones.
That was a real surprise, being a SE fan, I never thought a Nokia could be better in music quality. But it is.
I own a w910 again, because of the size and screen mainly...but I miss the crisp and clear music.
I'll buy better earphones and keep trying ...hehehehehee

Yep, that's the unfortunate downside.

I haven't tested those phones, no. And sure, they might be better than any of the phones I've tested, but from what I've read on various websites and reviews, they still can't compare to a dedicated player.

W900, but it's an old model.

Posted by vladn02
i can compare my n82 to my ipod
without a prob, im sure it gets even better if you get a mp3 app. thats better than standard but honestly sound quality is amazing, not even close to my old k800 or the k850

Best phone for music? Honest opinion?

iPhone 16Gb

+ Massive amount of storage compared to most other phones
+ Same specialist MP3 Decoding hardware/chip as in the Apple iPod Video (5G). Means music is played using dedicated hardware rather than software emulation.
+ Cover flow for looking through your album art.
+ Plays MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV music files.
+ Up to 24 hours audio playback time (Apple quoted).

Ditch the iPod and get a Sony Walkman 616 MP3 player instead - it's a fantastic piece of technology and is comparable to what you're used to listening to, quality wise.

for the moment i think a K850 with a pair of HPM-82.
(why buy a phone (with the great A200 platform) example W910/w890/w760, when k850 have the same sound + better camera features ??? )

or if you like Symbian & touchscreen, a W960 (also with a pair of HPM-82) should also be great

Wrong answer!

If you're serious about listening to music on the move then you DO NOT use Sony Ericsson headphones of any kind!!

If you're serious then spend a minimum £80 GBP on decent headphones from speciality headphone makers. I'm talking Shure, Bose, V-moda, B&O etc. Their standard range headphones will cost you almost £300 GBP.

Seriously - these headphones will take your music to the next level!!

I'm not sure how much difference would it make if you use a Shure or Bose headphones with a K850 or W960. They would probably sound the same as HPMs because of the limitations of those phones.

I love my w610 as a music phone but I want more GB. SE w960 is very expensive.

Buy a new mem. card then?

If you can't find a phone, go for a Creative Zen. Absolutely tiny and with the best sound quality, good price and decent headphones. They do SoundBlaster and it shows, better than any iPod.

Definitely true. Theres no point spending a lot on headphones if you plan to use them with your phone. If you were serious about your music, you'd still be looking at getting an MP3 player, rather than a phone. And you'd buy those expensive headphones for your MP3 player.

While a phone is satisfactory for many people, the sound quality is not there yet. This is because (as stated previously) an MP3 player has dedicated decoding hardware, where a phone only uses software settings to try and create the same effect. Not until they start putting dedicated decoding hardware into phones (iPhone already has this, as one of the posters above said) will we see phones truly give MP3 players a run for their money.

Well i have a 3 year old sony 20g walkman,NW-A3000,with some koss headphones. I've done a sound limiter hack that existed for this model and beats hands down K850 with hpm90 or with the koss headphones too.
Musical experience with the sony is excellent...
Sonyericsson walkmans need some serious catching up!!

Posted by vladn02
i have shure E4s for sale if anyone is interested lol sound great on my N82 but i actually am more than happy with the factory headphones i got, seem to be high quality, actually better than any sony headphones ive tried.

I'm currently using the w610 and it's a nice music phone. my replacement will surely be the w890 that looks like a terrific phone. it's so accessible yet, though.

I was on a shopping mall here and there was a samsung booth where all top-of-the-line phones are showcased like for example i450, G800, i600, D800 etc and luckily i certainly had a chance of testing all those phones. and judging by my experience i450 sound quality is very good(the booth uses senheisser headphones for their music phones btw). the amplifier helps alot in boosting the frequencies to make it sound louder and clearer, but i don't think this would mean better/par sound quality with dedicated mp3 players like Sony Network walkman and Ipod Classic i used long ago.and imo having a dedicated audio-enhancing chip(audio chip/sound chip) is better than having just an audio amplifier in it. and this is where N91/N81 tops out most music phones around with it's audio chip. although i imagine how good it is to have both audio DSP chip and audio amplifier in one music device.

Alot of new Nokia phones have great sound quality with the dedicated audio chip my 6300 does not even have that and sound is good. Though its not a patch on my Creative Touch. Though im a SE fan i find the sound quality in their phones for music horrible the mega bass just muffles the music i find. I have a good ear cos me and my dad are into quality hi fi. Anyway i think with time SonyEricsson will change and improve things with regards to sound quality and perhaps follow Nokias route and put in a dedicated audio chip and better speakers. Are you listening SE. As for changing your phone i say stick with what you have unless you really want a new phone. When you go into a phone shop ask them to test some phones and dont let them fob you off with a quick sale of a Walkman phone with them saying THESE ARE BEST FOR SOUND COS THEY ARE WALKMANS. Tosh.

Agreed with Razec.
Ive got a Nokia N81 and use both The default headphones or HPM-70s to listen to music and its sound quality is AMAZING
It would be nice get all the details on a site about the Audio Chip that both the N81 and N91 are using, anyone got a link?

My advice is to get your k810 kd player and good quality acoustics installed, them buy better original Sony Ericsson headset that has 3.5mm jack and is compatible with k810.
