a flashy in your face advert. It's not as bad as the free Audi A3 ones but still, didn't really expect to see this:
Posted by MikLSP
Why didn't you expect it? The ads after ever first post are terrible whatever the content.
Posted by himlims_nl
i don't have any problems with websites trying to cover their costs with the income of advertisement.
but i do hate the advertisments like the one you showed up.
they messup your layout, are very annoying to watch.
rather see googleads (however this internet cia is getting toooo big)
but can't blame esato, they run a pretty well visited website.
with barley no ads.
why not make a paypal we could donate to?
Posted by MikLSP
I may be wrong but I believe esato actually makes profit.

I didn't know that this site had adverts on it.

They're on every page :S

very poor they are very flashy and distracting

Also annoying to see that Laffen is allowing links to pornographic content via the esato wap pages. I let my 10yr old causin look at esato on my W960 and when i looked back he had clicked on one of the ad's and was looking at pictures of semi naked women and men.

@rookwise - agreed there, I've noticed frequently when accessing the HTML lite version on my N95 I'm getting small ads that say things like 'meet hot girls on your N95', or adult dating sites and occasionally soft porn ones. Whilst I'm certainly not against semi-naked women (
I've nothing at all against the ads themselves as they keep Esato afloat and pay the bills, but maybe moderating the ads a bit if possible?

You guys know what I mean, the BLAH! Hello I'm an annoying flashing ad ones like the one in the first post do get annoying!
Stuff like:
is just fine. It blends in fine and I'm sure linking to the O2 shop won't go and stick a tracking cookie in my computer like the other would.
Posted by MikLSP
Well not all sites need such blatant ads to survive and as I said before I believe laffen makes money from this rather than "staying afloat"!
I'm not trying to cause trouble but lets have perspective.
Posted by Rookwise
If the pornographic/adult site ad's were removed I wouldn't have a problem.
My concern is that there is a lot of different age groups and people from diverse backgrounds who come on here.
For as long as I've been here on Esato there has been a restriction on this type of content and I think it could continue that way.
In some countries it is acceptable an normal for them to be advertised but surely Laffen realises that Esato has greater a worldwide userbase than just parts of Europe.
Personally I think this needs to be put a stop to. There are plenty of sites out there and that sort of content can be easily found without it fouling this site with its adverts.

Serving pornographic ads on the mobile version of Esato should not happen. The thing is that I do not have control of every single ads served. Esato has agreements with several ad-networks and they server different ads depending on the visitor locating / country.
I will take necessary steps to prevent this from happening again. Please send me a PM if you see any of these ads again.

I'd agree about adult ads- not really suitable for an "all-ages" site. However suggesting people use adblock makes me a little uncomfortable. Yes, I have some google-ads on my site but I don't make a huge amount off it. It covers the hosting though. If everyone used adblock and I got zero income, I might not bother to renew the site one year, which is a shame as it has some content that I have spent a lot of time on that I make freely available for others. I know a lot of sites rely on income from adverts - so think twice before suggesting everyone gets rid of them, otherwise you may suddenly find no content for you to have!

Personally I don't mind banners at the top of the page, nor do I get annoyed by Google ads. What does bother me is when adverts become too intrusive, for example a banner between EVERY post on a BBS, or even worse, those bloody 'Intellitext' links; where certain keywords produce a pop-up box *every* time you mouse over them. Any site that uses that kind of advertising deserves to be boycotted. Ads are fine, but they need to be placed on the page sparingly. Shoving pop up ads or banners in my face at every opportunity is not going to make me want to click one!!

Everyone in the world is out to make money, thats the purpose in life of this, and last the 10 or more generations.
So I think it's perfectly acceptable for Esato to make profit. It's not just here for our freebie enjoyment.

Hey alfaro - see my post a couple above yours. If *everyone* installs something like adblock, expect the net to have a lot less content - or you have to pay for it.
I agree that popups and redirectors are annoying and unnecessary but most sites rely on some form of income from advertising to survive.

What was life like more than 10 generations ago?....is but one of many questions that spring to mind.

lol, I didn't even notice ads. not even on the mobile version, but thats just me.
Some of the new members haven't been around LONG enough to recall a few years back that Esato's first move to a new server, along with increasing traffic produced empty pockets for the owners/creators (I think there were 3 of them, 1 silent at the time). It took astout members to contribute financially to keep it going as it is today.
AT the end of the day, Esato's hosts have to pay bills to keep this site going. If the majority of the membership this time around could once again contribute, this time I have funds to assist. If it means no more ads. However, if the owners wish to have ads to increase their personal bottom line ... the way their doing it - implementation of WHERE the ads are - is fine with me. They're currently Non-pervasive to most of us. Just no porno, or adult only content, maybe more relevant content to celluar - even if it means a few Motorola ads, lol.

My point being, back then I imagine making money wasn't EVERYONES priority. Especially in the last 50 years it's become an extreme necessity to survice.

The tools which we use to make money have changed & evolved enormously over time...human nature, I would venture, has not.

see, look no adverts with adblock

Even though addblock is available to some people, I don't think this type of thing should be shown on a family friendly, mobile phone forum:
I also have seen ones about adding glitter to my profile or something. What profile? Why would I want glitter anyway. Like the majority of Esato users, I am a male and am uninterested by the wonders of glitter. And the female members who regularly post here seem more sophisticated than to want glitter on their "profile".

why have the ads gotten a lot more colourful and eye catching?
before they were text based and I could ignore them, now they are all colourful and glittery.... (bloody annoying to say the least)
why the change?
Posted by scotsboyuk
@fatreg
The answer is in your post.
Posted by laffen
@fatreg
It is because I am testing out some of the features found in the Google Adsense system. The performance of text ads with different colors vs image ads.
Posted by paul101
ive had an idea...
why dont we have white - text ads!!!
people will still click on them...
and if esato makes enough from the software store does that mean the adds could get removed?????

I don't know where is the problem... Advertising is everywhere on internet.
Posted by thomas93
Laffen deserves some money back for his hard work I think.
Posted by arien617
Laffen if it's down to site revenue as well, I'm sure the >500's and other regulars will click them if you keep the old non eye catching ones around.
I know I'll help out with the clicking business
Posted by laffen
Please don't click on an ad unless you are interested in the product/service.
Posted by arien617
Okay then...
Posted by max_wedge
I don't have a problem with ads tbh. They are just there, you can ignore if you want. Adsense ads are actually usually quite relevant and a good way to find products or services when you are looking for it.
That said I use the hosts file to block ad servers. I do this to block ad servers associated with pop-up and pop-under campaigns. If an advertiser isn't known to run these campaigns then I'm okay with it. Moderate inline advertising is okay by my book.

Thats all good for those of us who are mature enough to know what to click on and what not to, but for the younger members or members' children who may happen to chance upon Esato, I don't think this is the best thing to expose them to:
