Samsung are stepping up to the cameraphone challenge with a new 8-megapixel CMOS chip that the company expects to see in high-end handsets by the second half of 2008. Easily besting Kodak’s latest 5-megapixel sensor, on paper at least, the 8.5mm thick unit also packs anti-shake, smile-recognition, face-tracking and a macro mode capable of shots just 1cm distance from an object (or tiny person).
Samsung also claim the CMOS can cope with extreme low-light situations and be ratcheted up to ISO 1600 for high-speed subjects. The whole unit measures just 28mm x 15.3mm x 8.5mm; it remains to be seen whether the company will make suggestions for suitable optics to accompany the module, as all those lovely megapixels could easily be squandered with a nasty plastic lens.

Must be CCD, otherwise it's just a toy compared to the true power imagers: imobile 902, Samsung B600, Casio Exilim phone etc

I couldn't believe some of the comments on this on GSMArena! People actually thought the camera module was the phone itself and there were comments like "who would use a phone that small?" and "wheres the screen?"
Honestly... Some people seem to have nothing up in the old skull.

Yeah I only post there when the stupidity of some of the others really get on my nerves. Like with the Motorola thing, people saying "DIE MOTOROLA DIE!" is just so immature and completely disrespectful to a company that helped cellphones become what they are from the very beginning.

^^ sorry to go offtopic but, i laughed at the LG TS news with 26M color display. that opinion's thread simply irritates me. it's because someone said SE stucked at 65K. really childish!
anyway: the 8mp module design resembles the SO905iCS's 5mp module. and judging the picture above the lens looked like it's having an optical zoom.
