Not happy with my K850i, what else is out there?

Basically the touch sensitive buttons dont work at times, and thats really annoying!
so my first plan is to debrand the firmware and hope that will work...
if not what else is out there???

I dont like the n95, its too fat
viewty isnt too bad, but its not very mature in terms of firmware, doesnt have themes etc.....

So what else is there? or what else is coming out soon.....
when is the next k900 or whatever due anyway?

Posted by plankgatan
why dont you change it to a new, better one ???

when it works, it is fantanstic

Posted by bavlondon2
Come of it Plankgtan your probably the only one thats fully happy with it. The fact is that it is full of faults and its image quality is nowhere near as high as it should have been. Even the W890 takes more colourful pics.

Anyway to the original poster perhaps wait for the G900? Should be the same price as k850 is now.

Posted by number1
k810i or k800i???, mine works fine i'm sticking with it the k850 isn't any better it just has better video recording thats all.

Posted by peacemf
isnt the G900 a smartphone with a 2MPX cam??
looking for a 5MPX

yeah i had a k810i ivory, was sooo happy with that

Posted by bavlondon2
No its 5MP. Video is as good as on the k850 and it features a better AF system which you can define the focus point.

Posted by number1
don't look for a 5mp camera phone because there crap, look for a maxuim of 3.2mp if you want a good cam

Posted by bavlondon2
Where do you get this mad logic from?

Posted by number1
were talking about mobile phones not digi cams it's common sense not madness read here http://www.6mpixel.org/en/ and learn high-end cam phones normally have a 1/2,8"" sensor size.

Exactly its a mobile phone so there is no need to downstep is there? May aswell just go for 5mp.

Plus with G900 you get WIFI ect...

Posted by Luci'sPower
number1.......have you ever owned a k850? if not....than please stop talking bullshit...k850 and N82 are much better than any other 3.2 megapixel camera

Posted by number1
why would i waste such money on a k850 when i have a k800 it's stupid due to cheap sensors & lens you don't get 5mp of details, 5megapixels is just a marketing thing.

Posted by Luci'sPower
yeah i know you don't get 5 megapixels......but you get better pictures than the k800 i have both phones .....so i have no reason to brag the k850...it's just better thats all

Posted by bavlondon2
Thanks LuciPower. I really dot understand the depths people will stoop to lol

Oh yeah and video on k800 sucks. QVGA 30fps is just right for on screen viewing but QCIF is a joke.

i found a way to get better pics with my k800i without spending loads of money on a new phone my homemade camdriver easily produces better colour & perfect exposure time and didn't cost me a penny.

Posted by peacemf
lol
thanks for replying people......
how about the viewty?

has anybody had problems with that screen?
like does it do the whole k850i thing where the touch buttons dont work?!

Modding is a bit of a risk as it can void warranty ect....

No Viewty doesnt have any issues with its touch screen. It takes great pic quality (manual focus is a nice feature) and its video capture is even better than the N95 8gb/n82. Flash however isnt as strong as the K850 as its not xenon. Its a strobe flash which is in between. Good phone though overall. If you can live without WIFI go for it.

the Viewty's cam is worse than the k850i's one, but the viewty is a alot nicer phone.

Posted by bavlondon2
Detail is not as good as K850 but some will argue that its better as K850/n83 give the look of a processed image. Viewty gives more natual pics. Plus K850 is seriously lacking in colour (not to mention the wierd purple tinge) its pics look dead half the time. You wont have any such problems with the LG Viewty.

Posted by number1
check the viewty pics in the photo section and tell me it has less post-processing & is more natural, most of the viewty pics are blurred and awful.

Posted by bavlondon2
Bullshit!

Well either way the guy doesnt want his K850 any more and I dont blame him.

Go with the G900/Viewty mate!

maybe a N82 is the best cameraphone at the moment

his not the only 1 who has had trouble with the k850i,

i would remmond the nokia n82, you get a 5megapixel cam almost as good as the k850i's 1 the colours are better anyway, it has a Xenon flash like the k850, you get wi-fi, DVD-like quality video & more features than the k850.

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah no doubt about it N82 is the best cam phone out there but he said he didnt like the N95 as its bulky. N82 is even more of a chunky looking phone.

G900!!!!!!!

Posted by DickySnapples
N82 isnt chunky at all

Posted by technical-expert
n82 here

Posted by number1
the camera on the n82 is shit, easily outperformed by the old 3.2megapixel on the N73, the n82 is the only cam phone i have seen that can get the exposure time correct, all 5megapixel phones are rubbish the k850 would have done 100 times better with 3.2megapixels no one even uses full 5mp resolution, but every phone manufacture is using 5mp cams on there high-end phones hardly any decent phones with 3.2mp cameras are made anymore i'm waiting for the c702.

Posted by peacemf
only thing i dislike about the n82 is the butt ulgy menu layout...

ive had k850 and now own the n82 and i can tell you with confident that pictuers are better with the n82.
When i had my k850, 80% of the times i had to worry about the pictures turning dark or blurry. When i press the camera capture button on the n82 im pretty confident that the captured picture will turn out good. The colors are very good and the flash is very powerfull. Stating that any 5mpx camera is rubbish and any 3.2 phone can outperform the n82 is,,, well,,,,, rubbish

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=163115&start=195

in my opinion the n82 out performs the k850 in every indoor picture, with or without flash. i have yet to try it outdoor so i'll let you know.

+1 for N82 here. It's a fantastic phone. Glad I got rid of my K850.

Thats a matter of opinion. When i was going from my k850 to n82, i thought the n82 was ugly looking. When i actualy got the phone and held it i was blown away by the build quality and how solid the phone feels. now i think alot of thinking was done by nokia when they made this phone because everything about it makes sense. I actualy think its a good looking phone. The n82 outperforms the n95 in almost all aspects but the screen size.

The n82 has soo much build in ram that it almost impossible to make the phone slow down. you can even watch the you tube videos of people trying to run over 70 programs on they symbian n82 phones and the phone still runs without a problem.

To be honest, the only thing about the k850 that i think outperforms the n82 is the screen brightness. for some reason the n82 screen is able to produce the same brightness of the k850 but the current firmware prevents it.

Posted by plankgatan
I had N82, im glad i didnt kept it. Sure its a good phone, BUT the joystick and the dull screen destroy the whole feeling

Posted by Skrue
n82 here aswell. Gave my slow and faulty k850 to my missis and she can live with it.

Wifi is a major plus with the n82 and the pics arent bad at all. This maybe my 1st nokia that will last me for a for a few months.

Id suggest you listen to us lot and try it.

5mp only means bigger, not better than 3.2mpix. All depends on the hardware and driver.

Posted by number1
more megapixels just means bigger resolution bigger better sensors and lens must be used to get the quality of more megapixels, mobile phone manufactures use the smallest & cheapest sensors & lens they can to keep production costs low, and to keep the phones small in size, adding more megapixels costs them peanuts and they don't have to use bigger more expensive hardware to just cram in a few more megapixels.
if you go around buying cams & mobile phones because they have the most megapixels you are being badly conned and the manufactures are laughing at you.
max for a compact mobile phone is 3.2megapixels
max for a compact camera is 6megapixels
max for a DSLR is probley about 16megapixels.

are you saying that a k800 is better than a N82 and a K850?if yes prove it........i've already maid a comparasion between the K850 and K800 and have a comparasion between the k800 sensor and K850 sensor .....to make it short k850 is still a better camera with a better sensor

Posted by number1
yes the k800i has a massive advantage being only 3.2megapixel it's pictures aren't grainy or full of pixel errors because the sensor isn't overloaded, the k850i has a newer better sensor yes but because it's overloaded with megapixels it doesn't perform as well as it should so it's just as good as the 1 the k800 uses, also the k850 has better image processing than the k800i thats why the pics are clearer, i use a tuned camdriver now i have better image processing colours are perfect, it can produce perfect exposure time no washed out skys, the older camdriver (2.9) of the k850 uses extactly the same colour saturation value as i'm using on the k800 only difference with the k850 it caused colour fringing & se had to remove it, on the k800 it works perfectly. off the topic of cameras i've used my k800i everyday taken it everywhere with me for 10months not 1 problem but only 1 small problem a couple specs of dust under the lens, the k850 would have fallen apart in half that time or given up completey, the amount of threads i see like this 1 help my k850i has fallen apart, the touch keys are broke, it keeps restarting.

Yep; to each their own.

The W910i is awesome. It's got 9/10 from real user reviews at GadgetStylist.com

http://www.gadgetstylist.com/products/view/41/sonyericsson-w910i

However it's more about the music than the camera.

The K770i has a decent 3.2 camera but is much smaller than the K850i - none of those fiddly touch buttons either!

Posted by peacemf
anybody went from a k850i to a viewty?
looking at the N82, its around £260 to £280 whilst the viewty is around £50 cheaper

Posted by peacemf
found some interesting comments on the viewty:
PROS

I love the touchscreen interface - so far the novelty hasn't worn off. The haptic feedback (vibration) when you push a key is brilliant

The video recording is fantastic - very very good quality.

Video Playback (DivX) is a great addition.

Fits nicely in my pocket and looks very cool

CONS

The camera is rubbish in anything other than excellent outdoor lighting. I was buying this as a 5mp camera phone and while outdoor shots can be very good, anything in low light is poor. My k800i 3.2MP camera performed much better in almost all circumstances

Some functionality is very unintuitive. For example half the menus allow the touch screen scrolling (where you drag your figure up or down the screen to scroll down or up through the menu respectively) and some do not.
e.g. when you are browsing artists in you music you can touch screen scroll but once you go into an artist to see the songs you can't. then you either have to tap the bar on the right to go up or down (as you would on a computer screen) or use the fiddly jog wheel at the back.
It just is not consistent

Although there is functional support for > 2gb cards, it is not fully supported (see other threads). I have an 8gb card and it works with music and videos but is a delay in accessing the data.
e.g. if I go into my music folder it takes between 10-20 secs to access the folder. Once I am in it is fine but it is a bit annoying every time to wait.

Processing power on the phone seems to be relatively weak. There can sometimes be lag between pressing an icon and it actually registering a response. It is nowhere near as smooth as e.g. an iphone although those two phones cannot be compared fairly.

Limits on the phone are rubbish. e.g. 300 text messages including Inbox AND sent messages. and thats actual messages so if you sent a text that uses 2 SMSs then it will take up 2 of your phone allowance. Also only 5 memos are available.

There is a severe lack of themes and the only way to get around this is to use the hacking measures as described on this site but at this point in time I'm personally not confident enough to try it.

There seems to be no way to scroll through photos full screen without the zoom and left+right options staying on the screen. You would have thought that being a touchscreen phone you could view the photos on the beautiful 3 inch screen and flick through them with your finger

Firmware updates that could fix some of these problems seem very unlikely as LG seem to have no interest in supporting the consumer after the product is sold.

@Platgatan You say you "had" the n82 ?!?! Surely you ment - you "had" checked it on the net Is fine to lie now and then, as long as you don't begin to believe what you say

Get yourself a T650i or a K810i even though they are a bit "old".

Wondering what Homemade Cam drivers will do to the K850i when modding comes around. Same with sound drivers. 1.5yrs passes and everyone forgets the months of anguish that the K800 add in the official thread here. Then SE got things sorted, same with the XS++ team and modding goes buck wilde!

Personally I like my new K850i - even though its branded in the firmware its very stable. Pics are blurry but I know its due to 2 things. I'm holding it wrong due to habit; and from what i've learned on the W810 & K790a, after the first 40/50 pictures or so then its better.

So the K850i is not a crowd pleaser, and I'm sure i'll have my issues with it later on. But we ALL get that way with EVERY phone eventually. We all upgrade don't we?!?

being contented in a kind of phone that is functioning well is the best answer.

remember were in the world of change. not bad if you want to buy those things. but when your talking bout the "happiness" of having it, well, go for the one that suits you well.

at present I have my k750i (even though i flash it now to W800) and i have it almost 2 years and yet still working fine.
