Anyone on here know the legalities of tracking a mobile phone. I've got a works mobile and wondered if they could trace my whereabouts without my permission/knowledge. Its not my phone, so I'm not the owner would they need permission?

AFAIK it is IMPOSSABLE

As far as I'm aware its possible to trace a mobiles signal within a cell but I don't know to what sort of accuracy, it was more the legalities about doing so without the persons knowledge.

I doubt it. I mean, they would have caught all these criminals/suspects on the run if they could do that.

ah.................. how do you think networks block/bar phones?

of course they can trace the phones where abouts, provided it has a sim in it and its turned on, and in the country!

what ever your phone you are using, your network will know what it is!

Is it posible to trace a mobile in real time without the users knowledge and without any police involvement?

yes!

well, they arent meant to, unless, they are tracking a stolen phone for example....

but they do know what phone you are using. I called up 3 to get a phone unlocked. i didnt tell them what phone it was, or its imei, but yet they knew the imei number of the phone i was using. How ever, if it wasnt a 3 sim card in it, they wouldnt have been able to tell. A network cant trace your phone if it doesnt have the networks sim in the phone.

Example, i was using a stolen phone ( i didnt know at the time) which was from Optus (aussie network) with a vodafone sim card. Though, the phone wasnt barred, simply because there was no optus sim card in it. So the info from the phone/sim, was sent to vodafone, and not optus.

Yeah I was looking at the matter in a privacy context, every other week I'm required to be on call so have to keep my phone on 24h/day I'm not technically at work so why should I be tracked. I've spoken to my boss who says it will not be an issue.. am I being paranoid?
