Right, had a bit of a interesting talk with apple today.

I went to have my iphone replaced, no good reason, its just looking a bit battered.

Anyway, I rang apple and tried to get them to replace it, however they won't as they say it's been unlocked (which is has) however, when I had that little box come up in itunes saying you iphone has diagnostic information I clicked no.

So how the feck do they know it's unlocked?

also worth noting that if you have a unlocked iphone your warranty is void. I am not very happy with apple now as they won't tell me how they know.

Oopsy! That is rather interesting wonder how they know that, as you can jailbreak it and then send it back so......

There not soft then, nice to know as i was tempted to downgrade mine, not anymore though lol!

either they took a punt or some information you gave over the phone was used

what information did you give them? serial number? imei?

I wonder if itunes reports this info back to them somehow and they store it in a database for such cases?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
only gave them the serial and ive never had it repaired etc and was bought brand new.

I am going to call and use my new iphone tomorrow and see if they know then.

iTunes can't send apple any info without asking me, and when they did I clicked no

Posted by masseur
hmm. I would have thought itunes was the only possibility unless something else you said gave it away

it'll be interesting to see what they say tomorrow then

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
literally all I did was give them my serial number and name.

duno, maybe cause its american

Posted by haynesycop
That'll be it then, surely there isn't a way to tell if it's a UK model.

serial number decides where its purchased form, but all apple products have a world wide warranty

Posted by baconnugget
they know u unlocked it because, u havent activated with o2 probably i think, they prob have a list n check if it been activated with o2 and if it hasn't they will know it either lying there as a brick on the activation screen or unlocked.

also im sure they can check the imei and what sim serial it associated to.

apple is just like micro$oft they know much more of their customers than they should
proble even know what size shoe you wear

Posted by fatreg
only way then can tell is cross check the serial number with activated O2 phones...

any other way will be illegal (if you have expressed you do not want to send info to Apple)

be interested to know what they say Luke if a UK iPhone needs repairing... what they say, there is no way on earth that then can enforce that you need to activate it to enable warranty on it.. (also, unlocking may void the warranty, but lack of activating it shouldn't)

Hi all

I reckon they typed in your serial number and it came up as not activated IMO that is the only way they could know, well legally anyway.

well they say on their site:

Our records indicate this product has not been activated. Learn how to activate your iPhone. Please note that warranty service is not dependent on activating your iPhone. For more information, please contact us.

They can make the assumption that the iphone has been unlocked, but that doesnt sound like apple atall

Posted by londonlad123
Their records probably show that the serial number you've given them has not been activated through iTunes. I wasn't aware that activating but not unlocking leaves your warantee in place. Apparently they also collect bits of data from your iPhone everytime you use the stock and weather. Probably RSS feeds too, since safari send them to their servers to parse. And probably everytime you sync your iPhone, sending more data if you dont tick the 'leave me alone' checkbox.

...well,there was a thread which had something to do about apple spying on their iphone users, something along those lines...

its Mi5 they know everything

Indeed, just ask Al Fayed.

Why Prince Phillip wants to know about your iphone is beyond me........

Well whatever network you are on. They know what phone is registered on that network.

Im sure apple have a log of any phone legitimately activated via itunes, if your phone is not one of them, im guessing they will show you the door. Which personally is a bit rude of them.

hi ...im trying to buy an iphone online.....the serial number i was given is
878096HG0KH....is this correct?

Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
Um it could be

Might as well whack it into apples support site?

Posted by Residentevil
I would say this has another DRM national incident written all over. Remember Sony? Another reason not to buy an iphone.
