Apple Iphone Contract Question

Hi Guys,
I know this has probably been discussed before, several times, but I can't find it and don't really have the time to scroll through 100's of pages etc.

Basically if I buy the Iphone from Carphone Warehouse or O2, will i need to enter into the 18month contract right away?

Or do I simply go into the shop, buy the phone and do whatever i like with it?

As in like, activate it my self?

If I don't activate it, can they still tie me in for 18months?

All i want to do is get the phone thats all, no contract.

All help appreciated

Thanks.

No you wont be tied in until you activate it

Posted by Merc_Man
So i could simply buy one today from CPW or O2.

Unlock it and put my Orange sim in there and I will never be tied into a contract with them.

You can do what you like with it but you'll have to bypass the activation, jailbreak and unlock it, depending what software it'll be running before you can use another sim with it. There are plenty of sites around to help you do it.

Yep, exactly

Fantastic! Think i'll try one out then.

I thought you still have to enter into an agreement with o2 where you pay an agreed amount, irrespective of whether you activate the handset or not.

Usually in UK, Carphone will at the point of purchase send your details to o2, they will activate your o2 sim and start billing you accordingly. Remember, CPW does not get paid their commission until your details are sent to o2.

What you do with the handset is your choice, but you still have to pay the 18 month contract from the point of purchase.

What your asking is buying a sim free phone from CPW and then unlocking it yourself?

Posted by haynesycop
No you choose your tariff and activate through iTunes when you get it home, your simply purchasing the handset from CPW, o2 or Apple.

Thanks haynesycop, I didn't know this. I thought it was connected like any regular handset.

Well does it work?

im very intrested

Yes it absolutely works, this is what happens

1. Purchase an iPhone from official source, either, Apple Store / online, O2 retail /online, or carphonewarehouse retail/online.

2. Pay them the money.

3. Go home, open, find a site that deals with iPhone (lots of them, www.hackintosh.com, www.hackthatphone.com, www.i-clarified.com etc etc)

4. read it all carefully, and follow the instructions.

The things you need to do are the following;

Activate : This is telling the iPhone it's ready to be used, all iPhone are delivered in a deactivated state.

Jailbreak : This is the method use to access the file system on the iPhone to allow some 3rd party code to be run to allow any sim to work, remember the iPhone runs on a Unix based code of slimmed down Mac OSX, it has an almost identical file system to a Mac computer

Unlock : this i running a small code script, which tells the baseband (the phone signal part of the software) to allow any sim and network.

There are some extreamlely good and easy to use FREE answers about now, that are 1 click to complete solutions, google for

iLiberty
or
Pwnage Tool

Both of these will answer all your issues.

Works for both 8 and 16 gig models, and all world examples

Heres a good tip a well, before doing anything to your new iPhone

If you have a friend that has an officially activated iPhone, and you are interested in keeping your warrenty, do the following;

Remove the sim from your friends iPhone, and put it into your new iPhone, connect to iTunes and click activate.

Your new iPhone will start to work, as if it is your friends.

Now disconnet, and remove friends sim card, and put it back into his phone. His will resume working as before.

Now connect your iPhone to iTunes, and click the restore button. This returns the iPhone to the 'out the box' state.

now go about unlocking it as the previous post states.

The advantage of this is, that the iphone gets registered on apple and o2's database as being officially activated, and if you ever have a warrenty issue, they will see its officially registered and will accept it for warrenty, just remember to restore it via iTunes before handing it in!!

So.. you're saying I could buy one for £169 now and that's all I'd have to pay? What if I want to connect it to Itunes after the activating and unlocking etc.

O and what is the latest version of software for the Iphone? Is it now 1.1.3?

Posted by SE-Naz
Latest version is 1.1.4 which also can be unlocked...

Cheers

That exactly I also wanted to ask.
Generally to make is easier for everyone:
Can i buy the phone for 169 pounds, unlock it and use it with iTunes without being in danger of paying any contract etc?
Thank you

yes!

Just buy the iPhone for £169 and do everything that it says to do here:

it's really really really easy.

Daft question time. What if I buy the phone and stick my pay as you go 02 sim in. Will it work or does it still need to be unlocked??

Thanks

Interesting topic. I'm not sure this is true though.

Go to the apple store, to buy the iphone do you not have to supply your details for your O2 contract? Do they not activate your account then?

Has anyone gone and bought a iphone through this method and just not registered it with O2 and unlocked it and not started the contract?

Thanks for any replies.

yes, I did it on Friday from cpw. they ask your details but its just for the receipt. I paid the £169 brought the iphone home and used ziphone to jailbreak and unlock and that all there is to it. Its the same if you buy from o2 or the apple store

No you will not have to unlock it as you will be using the same network it is locked to, but it will need activating and jailbreaking.

Hello
Can someone from London tell me if the information I had today morning that iphone is out of stock on almost all cpw stores is correct??
I have sent money to my cousin to buy it for me but I am afraid I won't be lucky!!!

Just had a quick look on eBay, why are people still paying £200+ for 8GB iPhones, and that's just those that are due to finish in the next 45 mins. One person has bid £250 in the last half hour for an auction finishing at 1pm today.

I guess either they are not aware of the price cut, or are not techie enough to do the unlocking etc themselves and are prepared to pay the extra for someone else to do it

So what about using data, if i put my t-mobile sim, can i use the internet, google maps and I tunes and are the settings already sorted or do i need to enter them myself ?

Cheers
Lee

Posted by masseur
I had mine on t-mob originally. you just need to enter the standard t-mobile PAN of general.t-mobile.uk into the EDGE settings and you're away

btw, if you put an o2 sim card in you don't get access to that field and it works rights away

also, itunes only works with a wifi connection regardless of what sim you put in

Hi all,

this sounds to good to be true !!! O2 must come after you at somepoint ! you have to use a debit card to buy the iphone so they have your details and must have a time set time to register it on the network and then if its not been done......come after you!?

i really want it to be this easy. so someone please, tell me so !!!!

Cheers
Lee.

Posted by masseur
its that easy... there... I said it!

Posted by Daedalus85
lol, no they can't come after you, they don't really loose any money on them as such, but Apple do

Cheers all, Friday its mine !!!!!!!! wont sleep till then !!!!!

Any updates on this?

It's a very interesting topic and I'm considering a trip into town on Wednesday when I've got a bit more cash.

Posted by LeeG
only update i have is that CPW have sold out !!!!

Posted by DY357LX
I spoke to two CPW's and the local O2 store today.
All sold out of 8gig's and the O2 store had 1x16gig for around £320.

No-one seemed to know when new stock would arrive.
I was told to ring the O2 store back "next friday".

The rumours of the old models being quickly sold off to make room
for the new 3G version has some weight. Let's just hope they can
be unlocked and are released soon.
