Oh i read quickly and missed the ref to X1 and as I was reading a post on the C702 and C902 I thought they were meant to have VGA video now that would have been a shocker!

c702 is like what k550 is to k750.

when k550 was announced, people though of it as an upgrade to k750 camera wise. it turned out to be that k550's focal length is 1mm shorter than k750. thus the noisier pics in low light.

now comes c702 which has also a focal length 1mm shorter than k800.
anyways, 4.2mm isn't that bad.

imo, mr dicky will not disappoint camphone lovers with the first two C phones. after all, c702 and c902 are christening models of a brand new series that directly carries an index truly representing the cybershot name.. thats why i have high hopes for these two C phones

so lets just wait for the photo shots of c702 and c902 and see for ourselves

I used the 902 at the SE event in London, but don't read this as a proper review.

1) The 902 feels nice in the hand. It's fairly heavy, and my only concern was that it could be easy to drop if you're using it as a camera. When you hold it, you'll see what I mean. The K850i might be too chunky, but when you're using it as a camera instead of a phone, a bit more bulk actually helps.

2) The speed of operation is MUCH quicker than the K850i. Has it got a faster processor, or is it optimised code? If it's faster, that's not good news for the K850i owners waiting for the elusive update. If it is optimised code, then this is what the K850i might one day be like.

3) The touch screen icons are very responsive, but it does make the screen smaller than it could have been.

4) The slide out camera is odd; you slide it from half way down the phone - and it leaves an area above the screen that will attract dirt and dust. Is the design too clever for its own good?

5) The picture I took and then reviewed on screen (but zoomed in) still shows all the same problems as the K850i. At 100%, the K850 doesn't take good photos with loads of fringing and artefacts. While the photos posted on here at 25-50% can look STUNNING, you can still see how this phone lags a long way behind ordinary cameras with 5MP sensors.

6) The media player flies, but that might have been because there wasn't much content and it had a small, or no, memory card. The K850i crawls when you use a large capacity card, so - like point 2 - is this down to the card, a faster processor or optimised code?

7) The new photo flash LED didn't seem much brighter than any other LED/twin-LED setup. However, it's more important that it works well with the sensor. The models at the event weren't configured properly, meaning all the pictures had a very bad yellow tint to them. Perhaps they were still set up with K850i camera drivers expecting a Xenon flash/colour temperature.

The C902 is no doubt an impressive phone, and we won't have to wait all year for it to come out. However, I am also very impressed with the G900 and think it has the better UI (the camera interface on the G900 is NOTHING like other UIQ devices, and being all touchscreen means you can point at areas on the screen to select a point of focus etc).

In any case, this is going to be a good year for SE if this is what they're doing. Compare to Nokia which didn't really advance things at all, but rather increased their portfolio with variations of current models.

@jmcomms

what about the video? 30fps? what resolution?
the face detection feature detects how many faces in one shooting?

Posted by xell
QVGA @ 30FPS according to the Whitepaper available now at Developer World.

ok. thanks man. so it will have the same video rec capabilities with k850.
will the AF be enabled even in the video mode? i hope so.

Posted by Prakash
Noticed this in C902 white paper
Dual microphones for stereo sound when recording video.
It will be interesting to see how much difference does it make.

Posted by jmcomms
The K850i records pretty good video, even if it is just QVGA (not a problem for anyone that is only going to share video with sites like YouTube or Facebook). The audio is especially surprising, so stereo could be an excellent improvement.

Posted by crossmatched
i checked developers website of
there is no whitepaper yet for c702?

C902 would have been near perfect if it had US 3G like the K850i. Looks like I will have to hold off till a true K850i successor/refresh comes out.

there is no c702 there. only c902 white paper

The C902 is the definitive phone for me! I will buy it as soon as it is on the market. I just hope SE will write a decent firmware!

The picture where the phone is in the sand, what do you think, is the fastport still working?

My mistake. I had just read the C902 whitepaper. I was a little disappointed causing me to overlook that when I glanced over the list
One thing you can do until they post it is check out a comparison section in the C902 whitepaper, where they compare the C702, C902, and K850i

CPW may have this by June

Not sure if it has been posted already but here is a hands on video of the C902.

Hahahaha that guy in the video is an idiot "has everything we expect from a UIQ phone"... What the hell? He called it a UIQ phone twice!

Nice, decent release time from there imo. Still no news on the c702 on the CPW site though...

WHen I read that the c702 (or w760) has built in gps-does it mean I don't have to connect to any accesory, the web or anything? I can just turn on the gps and get my position? How will I be able to install maps? Sorry for all the questions-but the whitepapers don't say much.

Yes the c702 has built in gps so you can always get your position. Having not used google maps before I'm not sure how you get new maps - it will either be by downloading through the computer or downloading through the phone itself. Hopefully it will support downloading from both the computer and through the phone as this will save you money when you have a computer at hand although still makes maps available through the phone network when you are away from your computer

All excel in different areas... I'd be stuck too if I had the choice. Yo just need to work out what it is you NEED, then what you WANT after that. See which one matches up best.

i read that c902 will have some "new" camera "software"...called Photo flash... its about better light-features or something ???

is it the same sensor as k850 ????...no xenon flash right ???

do i like this phone ???? yes, very much beatiful design.

Just shoot
With the C902 Cyber-shot™ you just need to slide open the active lens cover and shoot. The Face Detection and Auto Focus capability enables the camera to detect and focus on the face of your subject rather than the background, so that you can take sharp and high quality pictures of your friends.

Night shoot
With the C902 Cyber-shot™ you can be confident of getting the perfect shot. The phone incorporates the latest in lighting technology - Photo Flash - giving you better quality pictures even in low-light conditions. Also, a light solution has been added to the established BestPic™ feature - which lets you take nine photos in quick succession, choose the best and delete the rest. So now you can use BestPic™ wherever you are, perhaps even to capture the dance-floor action in a club!

review But we were impressed when we tried out the phone's auto focus, which finds faces like a modern point-and-shoot camera,..THATS GOOD NEWS...THAT I WANT

guys...check this out....c902 comes with the new "photo-flash"...its suppose to be better then Xenon flash....and it gives you high intensity light even on best-pic

citat:
Sony Ericsson claims this is not the standard LED we are used to and is called by them ‘PhotoFlash’ (the ordinary is ‘PhotoLight’). In the tests of the manufacturer (according to them), it proved equal or better than the Xenon – we will state our opinion after our tests

Good news, indeed.

Posted by plankgatan
this photo flash is realy something...the best thing of all is (of course) that you can use it even with Best Pic ....thats f"""ng rules
(it dosent need to "reboot" itself, it can firing off flashes over and over again in some seconds)

think about using flash on 4 + 1 + 4 pics in one second.......
blink, blink, blink, blink + blink + blink, blink, blink, blink.........yyyeeeehhh.

hmmm..this guy in the video says VGA @ 30 FPS video recording
if it is so...then GOOD news
but can i believe a guy that says the phone has a GPS even if it doesn't?

TOLD YOU SOO!!!!!

just listen carefully the video

Posted by bodeh6
I wouldn't believe the video. The whitepapers state QVGA 30 FPS with stereo microphone recording.

RE: photo flash.

This is very good news, lets hope it IS as good as Xenon in the tests.

The C902 is only 11mm thin (less than half as thick as the SO905iCS ) and yet still packs a 5.0MP cam and some new tech.

Sounds good to me.

Posted by Paul in LA
Geez about time. I almost was considering another N82 (and I wasn't crazy about the first one I had).

Very happy indeed!! Now just come out early!!!

Posted by bodeh6
If it had US 3G, it would have been perfect. Everything the K850i should have been.

Posted by G-Izzat
Take a look at the results that he got using the PhotoFlash.

Posted by Superluminova
Haha

Thats my local SE rep in that video!

Posted by jmcomms
The photos I took with the new LED flash came out all yellow, so I think the early firmware is probably calibrated for the Xenon bulb.

So, I think we will have to wait to see how effective it will be. I suspect it will be very good though, as the flash is very bright.

Have any ordinary consumer digital cameras used such a flash to allow burst mode with lamp? I don't think so, and BestPic is so much better than burst mode too! The problem for SE is telling people about it, as even most reviewers can't explain how BestPic differs from a 'multi-shot' style feature.

I believe that SE said that the X1, C702 and C902 are heading for the US. Please correct me if I'm wrong. As for the phone itself, I was a little disappointed with the design initially, except for the keypad, but I have to say that it is growing on me. This photo flash could be a nice little add on.

Posted by bodeh6
C702 and C902 don't have US 3G though. They will work fine on GSM/EDGE because they are QuadBand.

Posted by JAGUY85
Photoflash seems promising. Hope it works well in real life as this would really keep the phones down in size.

Posted by genus
But 702 seem just using normal LED, this is not good...

902 seem better but dont have gps.
