Proto ver 52.56.25.29U

SE update says I have the latest version (it lies..) when starting the update, but I still performed the update and now I have the latest version.

Still missing handwriting recognition though...

That's the one I told you about a month ago

@mizzle

Is it the file enableRecognizersSVE.cab (size 2 kB) I'm supposed to use?
And it works on X1 ?

Already downloaded, will try it.

OK, seems to work, just have to get used to it and learn how to write the swedish letters on it.

Thank's

@ Michael - yep SEUS would work if you want to flash back to the original, however with UK Generic i dont think we get up that "flash anyway" button - which could be a bit of a problem

but there are the original ROMS available on XDA forums if you want to revert back to them.

about the Camera, I totally agree, the thing about previous SE smartphones is atleast they had the "sony" feel about them - like the P1i, had a half decent media player [WITH MEGABASS], and a fairly decent camera, with the functions that it had

Using the X1 for a week and a half, i feel as if SE grabbed a HTC phone, chucked a Sony ericsson Badge on it, added "panels" - which have a fair deal of Lag, and are of questionable usability, and called it the SE Xperia

the least the could have done was put walkman, or a proper finger friendly sony UI like HTC has touchflo, and the Omnia has it's own.

I'm wondering if I should get rid of my X1 and go back to the P1i until Sony Ericsson decides to create a REAL phone

Don't get me wrong, it's a great piece of hardware (except for the keyboard which I don't like - keys could have been softer and more resposive), one of the best ones on the market at the moment, however as far as SE's effort on the software and UI goes, they've done a horrible job

Do you think X1 will work with 2TB of memorycard?

No, it won't. The file system will be different.

It appears that StarPlayr has stopped working with my SE Xperia X1 after recently updating to the new R2AA0006/8 firmware released Jan 29th, 2009. Some of my other programs stopped working as well, but those developers were able to release some patches to work with the new update.

The error details are: "StarPlayr.exe TypeLoadException"

Can someone confirm that this error is in part to compatibility issues with the new handset firmware? If so may be get an update soon? Thanks.

Can you tell me will you be able to upgrade the tel to Windows Mobile 6.5? And how finger friendly is the interface when you add the SPD Mobile Shell?

Thanks.

Posted by koto
For me it is very finger friendly. I am really delighted by Xperia. Also windows mobile is even better than uiq, so much possibilities. Apps look more proffesional and there are plenty to choose. I have a lot of my P1 apps on xperia - core payer, document to go, handy safe, handy converter, funambol, audible player, mobipocket, fring, opera.

The phone is fast, stable and pleasure to use. I have a feeling of a mini laptop.
What I miss is track ID. Other things are much better than on P1, at least for me (and I am a true fan of P series and uiq).

Posted by michael the mage
Yeah, I feel almost the same way.
I see you have Documents to go installed. Why and what is the advantage over MS Office which is already installed. I am considering installing it too (I had it on P990i) but I figured since those apps are already installed makes not much sense. Unless DTG can do something that MS cannot. You know of some thing/s?

By the way, anybody got problems with auto cap of every letter that beginns a LINE, not a new sentence (after period)? I would like to know the Registry Key that controls that function!

And yes, I have tried Settings etc. check/uncheck and this has no effect. It ALWAYS capitalizes!

Thanks

Word to go is much superior than pocket word. It opens large docs quite fast vs slow pw. Scrolling and generally handling files are faster and easier. Excel is also more handy and easier to use. Also you get zip, adobe and power point. At the end I used Doc to go on P1 so it is a kind of friendship

Posted by apolloa
Thanks Koto, if nothing comes out at the WMC then I may wait for the price to drop a bit and get one. I really an after a finger touch use phone though, not the iPhone cause I can't install sat nav on it.
I was seriously impressed with it's size when I looked at the other day. I'm hoping for a non qwerty version though so it can thinner.

Actually what version of Docs did you install?

Yes, like a full tablet inserting options!
And also making BOTH margins - left&right - aligned!
Probably speed too....

I'm sending mine back for repair/replacement. Four reasons:

1. The space key is very dodgy now, it will insert an additional one or two spaces at random whenever I press it, even though I press on the same spot and with the same pressure each time...
2. Many keys on the bottom two rows of keys on the keyboard are nowhere near as responsive as they used to be. They now require a hard press, and I have to consciously remember to press these keys harder than the others. The X1's strongest point is its keyboard, and now it's so dodgy that I can't write at a decent speed with it. Not something I expect for a $1000 device (in my local currency) especially when the keyboard is one of its strongest points.
3. Outlook forgets my email signature even after I hard reset the device.
4. Most other users are reporting battery life far better than I'm getting.

I just hope they send me a replacement rather than repair this one.

Do you guys think I should try and put up with the phone for a while until they release a new version?

I experience this too. So annoying - especially after a fullstop you dont get the auto caps. My "?" button needs a little encouragement too. Thinking about taking the back off and cleaning the button contacts under the keypad. Shudder at the thought tho...

I thought I was the only one. My space key is doing exactly the same, either not putting a space in, or putting two spaces in. Some days it will be fine, others it will be really bad. Suppose it's not going to get any better.

I love this phone to bits, but I've only had it a few months. If I have to keep sending it off for replacement or repair, I might just see if I can get another model.

It really comes down to whether or not you need a keyboard - If you do, go with the X1. If you're fine with a soft keyboard, and you like Windows Mobile, then go with the Touch HD.

If you can live without all of the following features, then the iPhone is probably best: Bluetooth file sharing, MMS, video calling, memory card slots, hacks etc. without voiding warranty, Flash, decent camera, voice commands, handwriting recognition, ability to change UI styles between stylus-optimised (standard WinMo) and finger-optimised (TouchFlo3D and/or Spb Shell), HSDPA at 7.2Mbps, using your phone as a Bluetooth modem or even a wireless (ie. WiFi) router, ability to play the best audio and video formats (eg. FLAC and DivX) because MP3 sucks and AAC is worse, a huge modding and developer community, ability to view your phone's filesystem and share files between applications, good GPS software with features like voice navigation, the ability to use your phone as a torch (erm, NO, iPhone owners who think that a white screen with full backlight constitutes a torch - just NO), ability to browse network file shares and view files shared by computers on your network, and a plethora of free and commercial apps, some of which are extremely clever and useful.

Get the Nokia 5800 it is way better than any WinMo phone has a great screen and as for the iPhone it simply cannot compete.

But it kind of has been, hasn't it? I smile at the idea that the iPhone "doesn't compete" when not only is it very competitive with phones like the X1, but it was cleaning up the X1's target market since months before the X1 was even released to a very muted fanfare last year. The Xperia brand with its emphasis on "user eXperience" is SE's direct answer to the iPhone, but I very much doubt the X1 made even a glancing impact on the Apple juggernaut. It's the X1 that doesn't compete.

WTH is wrong with SE these days anyway?

For me as I use it every day in a power-user way, iPhone doesn't even have a chance to compete with none of the current smartphones with it's fundamental lacks and do we have to go through it again? It's not the real quality which wins since most of users don't care.
It's a marketing strategy, that's it.

Marketing strategy my a*se

The iPhone's winning because it's a supremely powerful device which delivers a user experience many leagues beyond any comparable smartphone, combined with a plethora of genuinely useful features and add-on applications that makes WM look agonisingly dull and stupid.

If you want to talk marketing strategies, just ask yourself where that self-flattering, aspirational, utterly meaningless phrase "power user" came from...

It clearly states you never really tried to do anything serious on a smartphone. "User experience" - man, this is a real marketing! They did it to you already!
Anyway, your praising as a "winner" a device which after 1.5 years is still not able to send a contact, copy text or forward a message is just makes me end this discussion.
Can we talk about SE now, not about toys for kids?

Not marketing, just experience - which apparently you lack. You're talking about doing "serious" things on a smartphone, but don't rate the ease, speed, efficiency, or effectiveness of performing that action as worthy of note. The classic sign of the sort of "power user" that desperately needs to know their device is capable of something, without ever needing to actually use it.

When you need to actually do something with your phone on a regular basis, that's when you start to appreciate the "user experience".

Anyway, your praising as a "winner" a device which after 1.5 years is still not able to send a contact, copy text or forward a message is just makes me end this discussion.

If you had any idea of just how much the iPhone can do these days, you'd never have started the discussion in the first place. I already have an official app that sends contacts by email, and I can jailbreak for copy & paste and SMS forwarding (although as an adult I rarely feel the need to forward SMS).

I'm sorely tempted to list some of the serious tasks my own particular phone can perform, quickly and efficiently and without even being jailbroken, but it'd be a long and tedious list.

Can we talk about SE now, not about toys for kids?

Ok, now, can we talk about SE X1 in SE X1 thread?

Posted by anonymuser
That would depend on whether posters like you, Nitro Fan and l337h1um feel like bringing up the iPhone again

Posted by doministry
I din't bring it, anyway, one sentence does not have to turn into the same discussion again. Use your iPhone and be happy.

- I have an X1 and and Ipod Touch. I use the Ipod touch for music and games and I use the X1 for everything else. The keypad in an iPod/iPhone is so terribly painful to use I stopped using facebook app and email. The iPod has a far easier interface but for me personally, all these apps and things without a propper keyboard is too much for me. I will never own an iPhone for this reason alone. No disrespect to any iPhone make-lovers but X1 (or any keyboarded phone for me) kills iPhone for text input and my personal "user experience" involves alot of it.

So, a real question is, will the next Windows Mobile OS have a similar interface to the iPhone? More than likely is my guess. How else would you ever get an iPhone user to move from an iPhone?

I had a problem maching P1 keybord speed of text input in my X1. Then I realised that using top of fingers is a bad approach. I started using palm side of each finger (full finger) and its amazing. Love those keybords. Fantastic phone!
