I have a question about the diffrent color-versions.

http://www.sonyericsson.com/x1/
take a look at the buttons...xperia-button, ok-button etc.
the font-color is white.

in other pictures the font-color is more gray.....

are there different versions?

Is there a video out there giving a demo of the X1 LED displays, flashing light for text message, flashing light for incomming call etc ? Would like to see how this works !!

Some pictures, like the one you linked to, are Photoshopped.

@borisisinvin, actually I could agree with you about media player panel, maybe they do have memory leak. I'm going by my experience with the media player on A200, which although a completely different platform, also uses a shitload of system resources and is a bit buggy. I actually use KD Player since the media player is so buggy. I use KD Player for music and the filemanager itself for video and images. I rarely touch the media player.

The media player implementation on A200 doesn't give me a lot of confidence in SE's effort on the media panel. My impression is it's bloatware. On both A200 and X1.

It doesn't sour the X1 for me personally since I plan to use TCMP (freeware)or the payware Core Player (if TCMP won't run). With a phone such as WM I tend to expect to have to source my own software anyway so it's no issue to me if the inbuilt stuff is no good. Hell, I've never used Windows Media Player on my desktops or laptops either!

Posted by borisisinvin
@ Max, yeah there is SO much wrong with the Media Panel, that I could sit here and make a very long list of everything that is wrong with it that would probably take up a whole comment page filled with just bugs and issues... I on the other hand really enjoyed and never personally had any problems with the Sony Walkman Player software on my W850i (a *edit* A100 *edit* platform phone), actually while on that subject of that I quite personally enjoyed it for the year or so I owned it and exclusively used it as my primary MP3 player (I haven't owned a iPod in over 3 years now I think?...), so hopefully now you can impart understand my high hopes for the Media Panel and as a result the huge disappointment I now feel with SE's implementation on the X1 because of all of this?...

On a different note, what has everyones experiences been like so far with Way Finder and Way Finder Earth Beta? I have to say that both pieces of software are horrible, with the latter slowing down (I suspect) and rendering my phone almost useless! I'd really like to give Way Finder an honest shot, however it's both super buggy and has only opened one out of every five times I've tried to open it so far... I also downloaded the Earth Beta (like I mentioned above) on Way Finders site while getting Way Finder to give it a try, and seriously thought something was wrong with my phone afterwards since trying to open it to try it out on my phone rendered it super slow and almost unusable! I've since removed Earth (after two failed attempts at first to try remove were met with a beach ball of death each time, succeeding on the third), and haven't had any of the problems I mentioned above on my X1 since... I'd tell anyone looking for turn-by-turn navigation to stay VERY VERY far away from Way Finder Earth Beta, since it's the devil IMO. What about just regular old Way Finder btw, anyone had any success with it, or used it for an extended amount of time?... Is it just my phone that it mostly refuses to work on? What software does everyone here use for turn-by-turn navigation on their X1s?...

W850 is an A100 (JP-7) phone like the K800, the 1st A200 Walkman was the W910.

Oh man, do you really want to know? Ok, here it all goes all of the stuff wrong with the Media panel off of the top of my head:

* It won't recognize any of my playlist but one.
* It refuses to play any songs from anything other than the "track" list category, meaning that when you go to the "artist" or "album" list category and hit "menu" and then "hit play all by artist or album" it won't, it acts like it's about to and instead goes to a blank screen and plays nothing.
* Like mentioned above, when you do the above, but navigate further down to a specific song and try to play a specific track it does what I mentioned above.
* After turning it off and then restarting it the volume decrease by an increment of one each time (if you never re-adjusted it, it would eventually be at zero after constantly closing it and re-opening it) making you adjust the volume manually to the "perfect" setting you had it at before closing the Media Panel.
* When listening to music over the loud speaker and hitting the "turn off" phone function using a short button press of the power button (to you know, conserve battery power) often times causes the phone to stop playing music over the loud speaker all together (but not when connected to a device using a Stereo Bluetooth connection?)...
* When connected to a stereo bluetooth enabled device the panel won't recognize and accept AVCRP commands.
* Disconnecting from a stereo bluetooth enabled device, even after you've hit "stop" on the player, causes the device to re-start the song you were just listening to over the phone's loud speaker (hope you don't like to rock out to someone like Celine Dion privately in the car, because that shit could be embarrassing while trying to get out of the car while parking next to the cutey ;p ). The only way to avoid this is to completely exit from the panel by pressing the "panel" button...
* Often times while listening to music streaming over a stereo bluetooth connection the music will inexplicably start to play super fast (think Alvin and the Chipmunks) and loudly...
* The Stereo Bluetooth connection will often disconnect itself from your device after a phone call (a noted bug that requires morts script to fix).
* There is no way to mannually innitiate a stereo bluetooth connection to a stereo bluetooth enabled device from the X1 itself (a problem more with WM I think), soooo if you have a device that you want to use to listen to music over that can't initiate the connection itself you're SOL.
* Something that I've now noticed is that when sometimes navigating panels, specifically either from or to the Media Panel, the phone will lock-up...

I know that there are more bugs and stuff wrong with the Media Panel, but that's all I can come up with atm off the top of my head. As you can see from my list above there is a lot wrong with it imo that definitely makes the Media panel an inconvenience and pain in the ass to use in it's current state. It definitely feels like a piece of half assed beta software that SE rushed out the door to make their ever shortening window. Hope this helps you out. To anyone else that's used it and experienced any of my problems I have and more please feel free to add to this list with any of the bugs you've experienced that I may have forgotten about.

Lol,

thanks.
A lot, although I don't use Bluetooth headphones at all, so I will not cry for some of the problems.
Actually, Bluetooth implementation seems quite problematic for most WM devices....
Thanks anyway!

P.S. It doesn't recognize your playlists, but which? Created on the PC or in the X1?

Posted by borisisinvin
They're were all created on a computer.... It actually only recognizes one out of the 5 created...

Vau, Boris that's horrible. For me A2DP is a must have. I daily use HBH DS970 and MBS200 with my P1 and the sound is great + everything works as it is suppose to be. I never looked at Iphone because it doesn't have A2DP on the first place but now it looks X1 is not so far away. What I miss in my P1 is PC experience of Skype calls (you and the other person can't talk simultaneously) and smoothly playing H264 files via core player. How X1 handles those areas? Thanks

Posted by MyP910
@borisissinvin

I use TomTom Navigator 7 for turn by turn navigation. It is fast on X1 compared to any other phone that I've tried before.

@Koto

I use Venturi mini bluetooth in the car and A2DP works well. The music is played through my car speaker and I can navigate the contacts and see the contact names through my Car Stereo display which also can be seen through my Car Dashboard Meter. But there is a trick to copy the contacts to the Venturi Mini. I heard Parrot MKi is also a great bluetooth product....

As for VOIP, I'm using VoipBuster and SJphone application for VOIP calls. I heard you can use fring as well and I'm not mistaken they are working to direct the voip sound to the phone earpiece instead of the speakerphone. At the moment, I have to use the speakerphone for Voip.

@ borisisinvin:

Haha, jeeez I cant believe you actually had the patience to test that useless mediapanel that thoroughly.
I glanced at it for like five minutes when I first got my X1, decided to add it to the "epic fail"-list of software and have never tried it since.
If SE ever release a fw-upgrade I might give it another chance...

1. How can I delete O2 panels? The phone was purchased from O2-UK store

2. From where I can download Google panel?

1. You don't have to delete the O2 panel. But you must unlock the panel. You need file explorer like total commander to get to the registry setting. Go to :-

\\registry\HKLM\software\SonyEricsson\PanelManager\Panels\O2 panel\

Then, under `locked' item, change the number to 0.

2. You can download google panel from XDA-developer. You have to copy all the folders and files in the google panel and replace all the files on your O2 panel. This is why you have to unlock O2 panel. And you must make sure the image files under the google panel use the same file name in your O2 panel (this is because these filenames related to the one in your O2 panel registry).

Hope this help.

Or... maybe there is other way that can install google panel easily without copying all the files. But, to delete the O2 panel, you must unlock it first.

It's not so much that I had the patience to test it all, it's that I've actually been using it day in and day out since getting it. I just don't want to pay for a media player at this point after paying so much for something I thought would just work. I'll be looking at some freeware stuff that others have recommended at this point, even though I don't really like delving into the depths of WM to open apps...

@ koto I too really depend on my Stereo Bluetooth connection daily, and like you this is a big reason (well, that and the whole being a AT&T exclusivity thing) why I've stayed far far away from the iPhone. I was really hoping for a similar bluetooth experience on my X1 like the one found on my N95 8GB (which was flawless IMHO), but unfortunately it's been nothing like it in so far. I'm just starting to think that maybe the problem with Stereo Bluetooth's implementation maybe with WM?... I've had nothing but trouble with the stereo bluetooth connection in conjunction with both the media panel and WMP. Maybe it'll be different with a freeware media player? We'll see...

As to the Skype question, tbh I don't know since I've never used it before. Sorry I couldn't be more help to you in that area. As for H264 files the Media panel handles them beautifully! ATM I have about 3 films (one feature and two short) saved on my memory card that it plays with no problems! I really like the nice big finger friendly media controls that it has for controlling your films. The only thing that I kind of don't like about the movie player (built into the media panel) is that it pauses playback anytime you access the control panel, but other than that it's pretty damn good! Hope that helps.

@boris
It helped a lot, thank you very much. Dogman said a similar thing about video player. Don't know what to say. But some problems you experience are absolutely not acceptable, I fully understand your frustration. It will be interesting to hear doministry's impression. Thanks again

Strange question, but does anyone have a copy of the O2 Panel to install / download? i'm an O2 UK Customer but aquired a generic Xperia and would like to see what the O2 Panel is all about since O2 Active on the Xperia seams somewhat limited.

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

@ MyP910, where did you get TomTom 7? I've scoured the internet for it and can't seem to find it? I'm not necessarily looking for warz (moderators) btw, and honestly wouldn't mind paying for the software, provided it works as advertised on my X1.... Any help you could offer would be great. I also haven't had a lot of luck finding NA maps btw, the only maps offered on TomTom's site seem to be European.... Thanks!

You probably need to stop expecting WM to be like your normal inflexible phone OS. If you get a freeware program you like, you can assign it to a button, or simply put a shortcut at the top of your start menu. That's about 2 or 3 button presses maximum before you have your freeware media player pumping out music. On my i780, TCMP is assigned to the left softkey, that's one press and bang, music playing

You don't even need to touch the touchscreen.

If you spend a little more time getting to know the modus operandi of WM, you will probably learn to love the flexible nature of Windows Mobile. And you will stop worrying so much about what X1 doesn't do out of the box and start to take advantage of the true power unleashed of Windows Mobile!

@max I totally understand what you're saying about assigning shortcuts btw and was just going to download a media player that I could put in my shortcuts bar on the SE Panel 2 (the panel I use the most, after removing the "File Search" Short Cut on it ), but it won't work with my phone as I just mentioned... As for my two shortcut buttons on the face of the phone, I already have them assigned to two other functions, and don't really want them assigned to do anything else other than what it is that they're already doing... The left is assigned to "messages" while the right is assigned to "screen rotation". Provided I can find a freeware media player solution that works, and is half way decent I'll gladly assign it to a program short cut screen button on the SE panel 2...

Exactly what I was thinking...

@ all I just downloaded Kinoma Player and have to say it's the bees knees. I tried Core at first and didn't much like it. Kinoma on the other hand. is brilliant and gives you an experience to match that of a iPod touch on your X1!... I highly recommend you all check it out if you haven't yet! It supports A2DP, but does not support AVCRP (yet, or so I hear). At the very least least this software does everything it's supposed to do, and really really well at that. It's also a really lite download that doesn't use up a whole lot of system resources while open (unlike another certain memory hogging media player that comes pre-installed on the X1). IMHO it's by far the best Media player software I've downloaded and tried on the X1 yet. Just be aware that it cost $29.99 to purchase, but is worth every single penny you'll end up spending on it in the end. They even have a demo that you can download on their site if you're so inclined.

It does not read the messages but when I get a mail for example it tries to read the sender's name and the subject.

I got my BT headset today (one that supports A2DP and AVRCP) and have a question. I've learned so far it will only work with Windows media player (let me express my disgust at this point that it does not also work with media panel). I have two "problems":

1.) My headset cannot start WMP. I have to start the app and then start a song (or a video) on my phone and only then my headset will start operating the player. Is this normal? I hoped I would be able to start the app as well with my BT headset.

2.) Now, this one really annoys me. The screen does not turn off by itself (standby). I don't mind pressing the power button after I start the WMP manualy, but when I get a call the screen naturaly lights up, but then I would want it to turn off again. How can I make this happen. I assume this behaviour will dry out my battery even faster (along with BT).

EDIT: Installed PocketPlayer. Everything works! I can start it using Voice command, the playback starts by itself, AVRCP works as it should (don't know about track name, my headset does not have a display) and the screen turns of by itself after 60 seconds and you can set it not to turn on if you press a button - so it does not light up again if I use BT headset to move to the next track or adjust the volume. It does light up if I use the call button which starts MS Voice Command or if I pause/stop, but I guess that can be a feature in some circumstances not a bug
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

It will read the sender, the subject and the body of the message:
1) Go to Settings->Voice Command
2) Check Messaging then press the options box
3) Check "Announce new messages." Press OK.
4) Set your Notifications preferences in the box below options
5) Add friends and stir.

You can use the Advanced Config program to make it talk slower. I changed the speed from 5 to 4.

@ Jabe, damn, that does sound like a pretty f'n cool music player. Too bad I didn't find that one first. Not only does Pocket Player support AVRCP; but it also seems to support Meta Data (like lyrics and song rankings!), auto resume, it's skin-able (with winamp skins!), supports album art downloading, a sleep timer, and gapless playback!!! It definitely sounds like the better, more complete music player solution for pure music playing... Still, I do really like Kinoma too (and wish it had all of that other stuff too). Kinoma has a lot of other non music related stuff that Pocket Player doesn't seem to have (it sounds like the better all around media player solution, and seems to have a slightly better finger based user interface IMO). Whatever the case, provided you use either of these instead of the Media Experience Panel, then you should be G to G. I've been using Kinoma all day today (with Stereo Bluetooth) and am pleased to report that my battery lasted ALL DAY (for the first time ever), and that my X1 didn't lock up or freeze on me once!!! I now feel pretty confidant in stating that the SE Media Experience Panel probably is the culprit and source of a majority of a lot of the problems I was experiencing with my X1. I was starting to suspect the panel before this, and my experience today with Kinoma definitely confirms my suspicions. Everyone should stay far far away from the Media Panel, which is a shame really. Hopefully SE releases a software update for it soon...

SE (and Sony for that matter) are really crap at software - it's always bloatware. (remember sonicstage anyone?) They should stick to firmware and hardware and leave the software to some third party software house that actually knows how to produce working software.

It's the same on A200. Best to use the fantastic freeware KD Player rather than the Media Player. I know it's not ideal to have to go to this extra effort, but I rather source good third party software and stick with SE's great hardware (and on A200, the brilliant interface, the best feature phone UI available in my view).

I guess being a Windows tech I've long ago got used to avoiding Microsoft bloatware in favour of third party (usually freeware) and it's no different for me with mobile phones. I am very cynical about supplied software, such as Media Panel or WMP, which usually serves marketing purposes primarily, leaving usability and performance as poor seconds.
