@myth, the image below is taken from the What is the latest Xperia X1 firmware? topic

@Humble, I must have missed that, what battery cover problem is there?

@masseur

thanks for that, I didn't check this thread.

So this is really bad news for X1 users then..

Posted by masseur
well, I can't imagine that it will be much different than usual for WM updates, except that SE are wrapping it up a bit tighter and controlling it all rather than expecting users to download a .EXE and run it themselves

I guess we'll find out more when the first update comes along

SEUS doesn't update live online. What it does is connects, downloads the firmware to your harddrive (encrypted of course), then the SEUS client on your computer installs the new firmware - if the internet disconnects at this point SEUS will continue updating the firmware since the file is already on your hard drive.

It's true you can't use SEUS without an internet connection, but it doesn't actually install the firmware as it downloads - it saves this step until the firmware has completed downloading.

Sorry, a little off topic, but hoping someone can help.

I've just installed Tomtom7 on my X1, and it's allowed me to download a free map which was a Cab file and installed itself within the Tomtom program.

However, it only has a map of Cambridge, and no voices. I have a standalone TomTom with lots of voices and UK maps. Is it possible to install these on my phone somehow (and if so, how?), or do they have to be specific maps and voices for TomTom 7 for WM.

Thanks but i need a website that ships to the United States..

Posted by masseur
@max_wedge, agreed. if it updated as it downloaded there'd be heaps more problems with bricked phones due to connection being lost etc

so for WM it will be much the same as usual for WM, but managed by SEUS.

@s32bauer, no, you can't use maps from standalone devices. TomTom 7 only supports the navigator maps v6 and v7 (currentl at v7.25)

To Masseur,
Every so often I noticed that the Back cover was becoming lose and You would have to push it back firmly, Then after a while the same thing would occur.
I then noticed inside of the battery cover the retaining clips which are located at the bottom, were pushed back, and wasn't seating correctly into the dimples on the side of the phone body, Since flexing these two clips outwards , I havent the problem repeat at all and the cover holds firmly in position, I had a suspicion about this issue before I had the phone , I read about it prior wrote comically about it,
"Damn wheres my cover?"
retracing your steps luckily you would find the back, Scratched, Gorged and rendered useless

Hi all,

I've had my X1 for a week now, and so far, after getting my head around the WM6.1, I'm starting to tweak it for my needs quite nicely. For those without an X1, it is the best phone I’ve ever had, even with the issues I’m about to go into below…

Few points/queries/questions for those with X1's (I'm on Vodafone):

1. Battery Life - is it just me or is it not the greatest?

Phone is never in stand-by mode (screen always on). Battery last less than 24 hrs of "light" use.

Light = max of 15 minutes call, 20 sms texts, 10 mins browsing, approximately. Your mileage may vary but in my world this is LIGHT usage.

2. Do you switch the "Data Connection" off, when not using the internet?

I've disable hotmail/push-mail and set it to "manual" in sync schedule.

3. Battery option "Backlight" set to Auto, Advanced "Turn off device if not used" unticked.

Obviously putting option 3 on, saves battery, but if you miss a call or sms, after the period set (max of 5mins) the phone goes into standby-mode, does not flash lights or anything! So the only way you know you've missed a call or a sms is by soft-power on. Personally that is rubbish! If I miss a call, etc. I want my phone to tell me until I've dealt with it appropriately.

Thoughts, suggestions, Windows hacks, all welcome. Will start my search as usual, but I'm not WinMob expert, and also have no desire to become one, being a Unix & large storage specialist.

Chris

@Humble

On my Black X1 from VodaFone it was really hard to get the battery cover off and it certainly wasn't loose far from it was my experience.

@the_mont

I think the reason your backlight is always on is due to what you have selected as your option in 3.

I found battery life to be OK but then didn't have it for very long but really didn't like the way the X1 decided how it would handle Data connections at all despite what i wanted.

Hi Marc,

Apologises, I ment Backlight is set to "auto adjust", where "Turn off backlight if device is not used for" = 1 min. So not always on.

@max

I have a rough idea of how SEUS works and that's why I'm saying that it's bad, as it has several disadvantages compared to the classic WM update method via standalone offline update files.

1. You can't update your device on any PC, but need to install SEUS first.

2. Although download and update are two separate stages, you still need an internet connection, since SEUS initalizes & connects to the SEUS servers first, because it checks the connected device each time you start an update process, before proceeding with (the download and) the update process, regardless if you already have the latest firmware files on your PC (from an earlier update process) or not.

3. Another disadvantage of SEUS is that it reads you CDA (or SPL in this case) and determines, if a suitable update is available or not (this is actually the same story as with GW vs. branded or localized CDA's on UIQ phones). So X1 users will need some geniuses in order to find a way to trick SEUS, so that they can download & flash the version they want.

4. You can't switch back and forth between older and newer ROM versions.

5. If SE has disabled the usage of offline installers, so that X1 users are forced to update their devices via SEUS, they won't be able to flash customized (cooked) ROM's, as those are only available as .exe files.

Long story short, you don't have the freedom of updating your phone where you want, when you want and how (to which version) you want.

These are enough disadvantages, me thinks

Posted by spine6
@myth
Ouch that is quite painful if you can't even used the power of WM because of SE. Limited in using ROMS. Is there anyway we could do a standalone installer or offline installation like other WM??

Posted by masseur
there's no way they can completely lock down the firmware, not yet.... maybe in WM7 but we'll have to wait and see

All it takes is someone to provide a modified hard SPL (as they have to with most other WM's, especially branded ones which can't be updated unless you do that)

once thats done you can use any firmware you choose and I'm sure XDA developers will provide the ROMs on their site, so you will almost certainly have the choices you seek

edit: indeed you can already get many X1 rom images over there

@myth®

I would rather they stuck to the standard SEUS update procedures.

Many X1 owners are going to be new to WM & will have enough to take on aboard without some overly messy update procedure.

I for one if I get an X1 would expect any updates to be supplied in a standard way, the more the X1 can get away from WM the better, be it by hiding the OS or by adopting a more normal update procedures.

For me buying an X1 would be a case of buying it inspite of it being a WM device not because it is WM device.

@masseur

Good then, I thought that SEUS is the only option.
An X1 version of HardSPL should be out soon then.

@Super Chimp

The usage of offline installers is as easy as SEUS imo, if not even easier.
And better and faster..

No worries, I wasn't arguing with you, just making sure that if your concern was failed flashes due to internet connection (which I've seen people suggest before) that that particular problem would not be an issue.

I agree with you re your points, but as mass. has stated, XDA developers have already shown there shouldn't be an issue with updating or hacking X1. Besides, seen what se-nse dev's have done with SE encryption? SE's platforms are more hacked than any other excepting Motorola. I don't think there will be any issue.

note: DB3150 file system has just recently been hacked

Guys, just off the phone from O2 retention department. Currently I'm on £30/month, 200 mins, 200 texts, no data - and my contract ends 6 November. So I was really interested, what deal can they do for me. I called them on Friday, but the Xperia has not been in stock yet, so they offered me XDA Orbit2 for free instead, with my line rental going down to £20 but for 18 month contract - they don't do 12 months contracts anymore!!! I said I need a hardware keyboard, and they advised to call today. So I was hoping to get a very good deal - but it wasn't that good in the end. After long discussion with the retention lady I ended up with 18 months contract, Xperia for £99, line rental £20/month, 600 minutes, 1000 texts and unlimited internet. It's not that bad, but I was somehow expecting get the phone for free... But anyway, if your contract's due to end, give them a ring and post your deal!

I rang up O2 last night about the X1. They offered me £45pcm 18m 1200mins + 1000 txt + free web usage and insurance - handset £49.99. I couldnt be bothered to go through retentions as

a: I am not due to upgrade until April 09 so not sure how I managed to get that one through (perhaps because I am a "Select Customer" and spend alot with them)

b: My work pays my bills so not too bothered about tariff tbh.

The order was processed yesterday and in my orders section on O2 I can see the phone is now with DHL due for delivery tomorrow.

Sounds too good to be true - so will only be happy once I have the handset in my sticky palms

Posted by db2boy
I went through retentions earlier today with O2 and hoping my X1 will arrive tomorrow. I got handset for free, £27 per month for 18 months (£45 tariff with 40% discount), 1000 anytime/any network mins, unlimited texts and unlimited data.

I was pleased with this and I wasnt due upgrade until next month which was still 3 months early as Select customer.

Is the X1 compatible with BlackBerry Connect software?

@BigFeat

Sorry the X1 isn't and it needs both SE and your Network to support and SE according to a poster that asked them have no plans to support it.

I just tried that, I'm quite far away from an upgrade. Unfortunately it did not work but he offered me the handset for £404 pounds :-|

I said I'll wait instead.

Hey, could any owners here dig up what the X1 SAR value is, in W/kg (10g). Might aswell find out. If there are frequency bands you dont need (such as UMTS, I wouldnt need it where I live, dont plan to use it either), can you switch them off? Thanks.

Manufacturing delays said to be slowing Xperia X1 sales, according to this article.

For those who can't be bothered to click on that link, here's the article verbatim:
Code:

As you might have noticed, there's already plenty of Sony Ericsson
XPERIA X1s out in the wild by this point, but there's apparently not
quite as many as SE would like, and it's laying the blame on some
slightly mysterious manufacturing delays. According to IDG News,
Sweden, Germany and the U.K. have been hardest hit by the delays,
but Sony Ericsson isn't about to get much more specific than that
about the matter, saying simply that a lack of "certain materials" is
causing the shortages. The company has said, however, that more
phones should be shipping into Sweden in the next few days, with the
U.K. and Germany set to get additional shipments in the next few
weeks. It also says that planned launches in other countries like
Switzerland, France, and Singapore, to name a few, won't be affected
by the delays, and that the phone is still on track to be released in the
US sometime in November.

just to share my story on getting the X1 from O2 retail shop last saturday.

My vodafone was due to upgrade and when I calll them, they've just running out of stock and waiting for new shipment. So I went to vodafone retail shop just to check. in the beginning the salesman said they got no stock and maybe will get them in a week ! the next day I went just to check again...and the sales guy said the same (no stock). I told him that I'm currently on vodafone and planning to buy from carphone warehouse as they have stock. Then the guy asked me to wait while he go and check inside. Surprisingly, he came out and say that they got 3 units in stock !!

Then, I ask to upgrade, he asked me to pay for 200 pnd for the phone. I told them its too high and what if I want to buy new contract ? He said If I want the phone free, I have to pay monthly 50 pnd and no free mobile internet. I told them, on the vodafone website, it is 45 a month and free mobile internet. He said it is different entitiy between vodafone online and retail.

It really pissed me off. Then, I simply went to O2 retail shop. I asked them about xperia ( I thought they will not have it), surprisingly the salesman said they have one unit left.

and the deal that I got from O2 is 45 pound a month with 1200 minutes, 500 txt and unlimited mobile internet plus 4 GB micro SD card. I agree with that and called vodafone to cancel my line and request PAC code.

Now... I'm happy with my Xperia.

All you guys talking about free phones in front of me... I know you do it on
purpose. You keep on doing it until you see me crying.

If you want to know how good is here in USA, just get a phone with AT&T,
Free?? HA HA HA if we are lucky we wil pay for the Xperia $400 to $500
USD. $135 unlimited internet, $20 text, $30 more if you want to tether and
get stucked with 2 year contract plus taxes.

That's not it yet. My wife has to have one. the whole thing comes close to
$400 per month. That about $10,000 USD for locked, branded, crapped,
Xperia that we don't even know when will come.

So do me a favor if you see me around, please don't complain about UK plans.

Hi all,

Has anyone checked E-Bay lately as there seem to be loads of X1's for sale some are VodaFone upgrades and some are unbranded. I don't know if some people have just been getting them to sell or if they are users that just didn't get one with the X1 like me. When i sold mine on the 29th October i got £500 +Postage and they still seem to be going for between £450-£550.

@WhyBe

Ouch that seems terribly expensive compared to what we can get in the UK seeing as your stuck with a 2 year contract i really hope you love your X1 after all of this.

far as I know you can't buy online direct from Vodafone, you buy from their stores. Now the store might be a franchise not owned by Vodafone, but it seems to me that if the store isn't selling the phones for what vodafone dictates, they are probably breaching their franchise contract!!

And so, because the store won't abide by Vodafone's online promises, vodafone have lost a customer. The retail store may be a different entity to the online, but the online is owned wholly by vodafone. So I don't think vodafone will be happy with a store losing customer's for them.

With all of that money spent, I have no choice but to love it I paid nearly the same for my p910a.

I don't mind though. I've been with AT&T since they were Cingular and whoever they were before that! Over here, it's either T-Mobile or AT&T if you want GSM.

I'm thinking about ordering mine from the UK, while the Aussie dollar is doing reasonably well against it.
