but never bother to install it. I can see the pdf with it that says what the improvements are.

So I guess, I make a back up of my programs on the TyTn II using Sprite,

then run this executable from HTC, with my TyTn II plugged in to the USB cable, and then sit back.

I wonder then if I restore using Sprite, whether it will put back Exchange server, address book, tom tom etc.

Basically, is this correct?

Ofiaich

Unfortunately Sprite doesn't really work too well with ROM upgrades - the restore usually fails going from a 6.0 to 6.1 backup, or worse, leaves you with corrupted new install. You're really better off just saving your files normally, and restoring everything manually from a clean sheet.

Hi all,

Actually i had noticed noticed the device and phone volume sliders and by moving both of them to one off maximum it has indeed greatly improved the volume. So that is one of the problems solved, i would still like larger font's but am slowly getting used to it.

I have also now solved the not being able to install apps to the X1 problem as hadn't realised i just need to run set up and then the next time i connect the X1 it installs it from my laptop straight to the X1 doh!

@Jah

I much prefer all Black phones and must say the build quality really is very good on the X1 indeed no compliants from me on this at all.

Ive just bought my XPERIA X1 from CLOVE.CO.UK, so hoppefully theyll contact me tomorrow on if they already shipped it and my tracking number.

Also i bought the silver one and the 16gb MicroSD memory.

For those that are asking how much flash memory does it support, this phone supports up to 32Gb of MicroSD flash memory, so you wont have any problems with it.

Im from mexico though, so i might get it in my hand by the end of the week or maybe on monday of the next week

SOOO!!!... CROSS FINGERS SO I CAN GET IT FAST!!!

Volume limiting is a good thing.

The level of noise in a densely populated bustling metropolis is already too loud for your ears; they are already being damaged. You really do not want your music any louder than that. If you can hear your music above a bus when you're walking down a main street in the middle of the city, then unless you're using in-ears which muffle external noise, well I'm sorry to have to tell you this but your music is too loud. I'm not saying it's too loud for your liking - that's your preference and your opinion. I'm saying it's too loud for your ears, not your brain. The noise of the traffic is damaging your ears already - and you want to listen to your music louder than that? I understand that listening to music is enjoyable, and I understand that you'd rather hear your music than a bus - but you really have to decide: is the super-loud music worth the hearing damage? Do you want to be able to hear when you're 60?

Yes, it behaves like that for me too. I don't really know if it is intentional or not, but my approach is to see the text on the screen and the two buttons as four different buttons, where you can change the function of two of them.
I reacted like you at first. I'm still not sure if I really like it, but you get extra "keys" this way.

Unfortunately, volume limiting is a necessary thing, and large companies like Sony and Sony Ericsson cannot ignore it for one very big reason - class action law suits.

Just getting sued in US alone is enough to prompt companies to put in volume limiting settings in their devices.

What SE could probably do is to make the volume limits user configurable. Put in on by default, but if the user changes it, then you have given up your right to sue Sony Ericsson if your hearing goes.

hi,

can anyone shed some lights on how the X1 performs when playing movie? is it very smooth like DVD-like type?

Posted by masseur
I agree that having the volume on max (obviously) makes it louder, but it still doesn't compare with other HTC devices I've used and does suggest it is being limited

I'm monitoring xda developers in the hope of a fix

btw, I found myself almost giggling inside last night at the speed of the device as navigating around is most definitly quicker than it was on the diamond
I am finding the narrowness of the screen a little limiting in landscape mode but its probably just a perspective thing given how wide it is.

Since it was cheaper then the P990 was, and works much better... Yes, I think it justifies the price. At least for me. I paid approximately €300 in cash for it, and an extra €15 a month for 12 months; a total of €480.

I would say it depends a lot on what encoding has been used. Some clips I have are as good and fluid as anyone could wish, copied directly from the PC to the SD-card without any re-encoding. Others are not that good.

The movie Hancock, which was delivered on a SD card runs perfect. But it was of course encoded specificially for the device. And I think the resolution is 400 x 240 if not less, but that doesn't matter. It looks awesome anyway. And it's subtitled in swedish as well.

Incase you didn't realise, HPM-70 ear buds ARE in-ear (and quite good even compared to more expensive dedicated headsets at muffling external noise). And the volume of most SE walkman phones (and most other brands of music phone imho) can sometimes be drowned out by external noise to the extent that you have to strain to hear the music. If you are listening to spoken audio it's even worse.

If you want someone to hold your hand then fine, but personally I feel competent at deciding what is too much and what isn't. I should have the choice.

1. usually the periods you are in a busy street are for 10-20mins at the most (compared to when you are sitting on the train which is 30-60minutes or more) and the train is muffled enough that you don't need it on high. It's only (I find) in those bustling city streets with buses etc where the external volume intrudes and a higher volume would be needed.

2. Spoken audio has an overall lower sound level than most music, so you can safely listen to spoken audio at a much higher volume level than say, Death Metal. Well, you could if the volume wasn't restricted

Where are the x1 threads going to end up? I can see them swamping out everything else if they are kept in the "general" section but they cant really go in the "symbian" section.

Posted by masseur
any new release phone always "swamps out" the forum it is in, then it settles down and there is more balance again

the X1 is unusual in that it is a first for and doesn't really fit anywhere else. Maybe when(if) we have more WM models we can create a separate forum

Posted by yea g
laffen could change it to symbian/WM forum (its not that hard AFAIK)

You're no longer a noob, but a seasoned veteran. Congrats on surviving this far

I reckon we should have a WM forum as well as a symbian forum. Symbian may continue if SE ever make a SF phone. And there will be a demand for Symbian related threads for a good few years yet even without SF.

And once a good number of members have X1's, a WM forum will fill up with all sorts of interesting X1 hacking threads etc.

@Jakontil

I have converted an episode of Dexter and the Simpsons to 800x480 MP4 using Movavi Video Converter 6 which i use for all my conversions for the different devices i use.

The only difference between this and my Bold settings is the ratio it still converts the files to a default setting of

Video
800x480
25fps
698kbps

Audio
AAC Profile LC
198kbps
Sample rate 48,000

The files produced using these settings give full screen video with no black bars and the quality is excellent no stutter or lag and perfectly in Sync.

Video playback and Music playback where the two areas that i was most interested in seeing how the X1 performed and IMO it performs very well indeed and i am more than satisfied with the results from both.

I really only have one thing left to do now with my X1 before it's review which is to add my Seven always on Push E-Mail. But so far the only bug is the not changing names on the shortcut buttons and the only slow thing is a Panel as it updates from the static image which suggests to me that the panels are just shortcuts and not running all the time. To be honest with SPB Shell the only panel that i find is getting any use from me is the Media panel the rest IMO are kind of pointless and just replicate what's already available.

@Masseur

I know what you mean whilst the X1 screen is nice and wide it does indeed seem not very high although it actually is as high as the Bold screen but i think due to the extra width it just looks and feels shorter.

Hey Guys,

Had two quick questions regarding the X1 and a-gps.

1) Do I need to buy third party software to use A-GPS on the X1 like Copilot 7 or TomTom?

2) Also, will I need to buy any special service with my carrier (t-mobile) to use the a-gps in the x1? Thanks

[ This Message was edited by: daytrade on 2008-10-28 10:13 ]

Posted by masseur
when you say a-gps you mean GPS.

you can use the GPS with the google maps that comes preloaded, just click menu -> use GPS

check your box as you may have had wayfinder included as I did.
I've never used wayfinder so not sure if it has built in maps or provides the ability to download them as you go

otherwise for more useful route planning yep, there's garmin XT, tomtom and copilot

you don't need to buy anything special from you carrier to use the GPS but if you choose to use software (like google maps) that download maps as you go, then you'd better have a pretty good (or better, unlimited) data plan!

Posted by max_wedge
I've been using copilot on my WM ipaq, but tbh I'm not that happy with it. It seems very inflexible.

But I much prefer a software solution, with maps saved on memory card, over downlooad as you go.

For example, my sister and her hubby were in Tassie recently, and often couldn't get good enough reception to download maps.

Posted by daytrade
Thanks Masseur. Very helpful for a gps noob like myself. I think I'll get co-pilot live 7 as it comes with a 2GB MicroSD card that has the maps on it so I won't have to worry about downloading them.

Posted by masseur
@daytrade, before you do consider this... my Garmin XT came on a 2gb card and unfortunately you can't transfer it to a bigger card as its key is made from the serial number of the card itself. This means I have to swap my 16gb card with the Garmin card each time I want to use Garmin. These cards are so small that you can easily lose it carrying it around outside of the phone. I lost an 8gb card that way a couple of months ago.

Tomtom, on the other hand, installs from the pc to the phone through activesync and you can put it on any card you like.

Shame I just prefer the garmin interface

@max wedge... serves 'em right for going to Tassie! I went once and vowed never to go back!

Hi Masseur,

I 2nd that re:size of card! I've just had my 8Gb card delivered with my X1 sometime before 6pm (grrr - where is he? It's been on the van since 7:54am, so says DPD tracker system) and whilst cutting open the stupidly large plastic packaging, it dropped on my carpet and went under "something".

TIP people:
Open memory card packaging in a large open space, where a bouncing micro-card cannot hide! Took me 30 minutes to find it! I'm going to paint it a bright luminous colour, lol.

Oh and where's my X1 delivery man....

Copilot maps can be copied to another memory card. Licencing is in the software itself. You can even swap the licence from one device to another (of course the previous device is then unlicenced and unusable)

Though I found copilot not very flexible. I haven't tried any others to compare though.

Apologises thought you said you did. Yeah I never have, so probably won't bother.

BTW Black X1 looks cool, I thought I might prefer silver but quite happy with the excellent build quality. Obviously we'll have to see how it weathers after use...

@Dogmman
Is X1 screen higher than E90 screen?

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

Well I'm sad to report my X1 is back in it's box and reset and it's either going on E-Bay or back to VodaFone.

Now please don't misunderstand what is happening here there really is nothing wrong with it at all just a few things that i just can't get on with. The first is the really small size of text every where which i really found very annoying. I also wasn't that happy with IE or Opera and found them much slower and not as readable as on my Bold. I also was having real problems with downloading apps and getting them to install with the Microsoft Media centre to. The fact i couldn't get Seven to install so no push E-Mail was the final straw for me and i couldn't even download it via either of the browsers.

But on the whole the X1 is very fast and stable really no complaints at all on this Multimedia is also very good but I'm not sure if this is because it's Voda branded or not but certain apps access to the Web was pre configured and couldn't be changed to WiFi.

Again if you like WM and TS the X1 really is a great device it has excellent build quality and is small and light as said above the only real fault IMO and for me is the small size of all the text.

Marc

Hi all,

Just got mine, does anyone know how (if possible) you can set the X1 to receive multiple contacts via Bluetooth?

I have two phones (one for work, one for play) with mutliple entries that I need to send to my X1. I can send multiple contacts from my P990 to an old w800 phone, so surely its possible with this? Or is it a Windows Mobile restriction, to only be able to send one contact at a time? Symbian come back, if not!

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Posted by bob2k4
This might be a strange question. But have SE removed the PlayNow service from the Xperia? I can't seam to find it anywhere on the handset, not any mention of it on the SE website.

Posted by Klueless
This X1 has me so tempted....A couple of questions for the early adopters, from a low post lurker:

How is the phone sensitivity? I've had mixed results with SE in the past, although my w810 was excellent in that regard.

Most opinions I 've read seem to indicate that the loudspeaker max volume is a little on the soft side...is that only for media playback, or during a call also?

Finally, will this EQ application

http://www.freewarepocketpc.n[....]load-htc-equalizer-v1-0-2.html

work on the Xperia?

Thanks a bunch!

Posted by Nanu
So Marc in your honest opinion would you say the BlackBerry Bold is a better far superior device?

Marc, maybe its time you went to specsavers? fortunately I already wear glasses for reading so the text size isn't much of an issue, but I can still read the second largest font without my glasses if I squint a bit!

I did suspect you wouldn't get on with the X1 though...

@Klueless

The phone is very sensitive, just this morning I upset it with something I said
No, sorry.. remember this is not a true SE and assuming your talking about call quality, its crystal clear.

volume during calls is fine, its just the media playback. next time I encode I am going to see if I can adjust the volume of the encoding to a higher level

not sure about that equaliser

@bob2k4, to implement play now on the X1 they would have had to write a whole new WM version, which they dont' appear to have done. perhaps it might come in a future firmware upgrade once they see the response to the X1 and realise its worth the effort?

Posted by Dogmann
@Koto

Not really sure what you mean by higher but the E90's screen really does seem much bigger which i suppose makes sense as it's 4" compared to the X1's 3" and 25% is a lot by any anyones standards.

They are both bright and clear and although the E90's is 800x352 to the X1's 800x480 it is virtually impossible to notice any difference and videos were both encoded at the same frame rate and bit rate just slightly different ratio's and looked great on both.

@Nanu

Well as I've said before one of the things i love about the Bold is the large choice of Fonts and font size and this really IMO makes a huge difference well at least it does for me. Video looks as good on the Bolds slightly smaller screen but the volume for both Music either through ear phones or the Bolds speakers is definitely louder and clearer same goes for watching Video and listening through the stereo speakers on the Bold.

The Bold is as fast and faster for certain things E-Mail is of course better implemented and the OS i found much easier to get to grips with i needed very few apps for the Bold basically just a good Alarm app and Google maps is all i needed to add. But as always what's best for me doesn't have to be for anyone else.

@Masseur

Although I'm nearly 50 i still have 20/20 vision and I'm not saying i can't read the text just that it really is very small something i mentioned when i first saw the videos of the X1. I had changed the font to the largest every where i could and IMO it is still very small. It wasn't this small on my E90 and the Bold is in a different league as there really is a Font and size to suit i would imagine all. I liked the X1 but i just couldn't see it replacing my Bold and as i said little things i find annoying but hey that's just me and I'm old and fussy now.
