From user reviews I've seen, for example on xda developers and others (sorry don't have any links handy), the X1 only has lags when using panels, and atleast one reviewer stated that if you had only simple panels (ie: not one's that were running active content) that there was no lagginess.

My view is that the idea of active content in panels is ahead of it's time, and hardware is not ready yet for that level of utilisation. For example, you could add active content into Windows desktop as early as Windows 95c (IE4) - but if you did the active desktop would crash often.

If I use panels at all I will not run active content. I will use it more as a big user friendly standby screen - for example to press the panels button (presuming I run the today scrfeen as standby) then one of the 9 most used apps or functions using fingers and without having to carefully poke at the program menu with the tips of my fingers as I do now.

@whybe, regarding car bodies, unless you are in a parallel univers to us, I can promise you modern cars are still made mostly of metal. The plastic you are seeing in accidents is the front and rear bumpers only, which these days are made of polymers, for example thermoplastic olefins (TPOs), polycarbonates, polyesters, polypropylene, polyurethanes, polyamides, or blends of these. Fibre glass and carbon fibre is not commonly used as it is more expensive than the plastics mentioned above.

But car bodies, ie: the quarter panels, roof, doors, bonnets, boots, cowlings etc, and of course the chasis, are made of steel. The only exceptions are some exotic high end sports cars.

I have a fair bit of knowledge in this area since automotive engineering has always been one of my main interests. My other main interests, computers and mobile phones, is a more recent development (showing my age there). I searched google for the names of the plastics, which I admit I didn't know off by heart http://www.plastics-car.com/s[....]cscar/doc.asp?CID=418&DID=1332

Yes, that's something about X1 that's very appealing. Decent Gaming! J2ME sux when it comes to 3D games.

Thnx Max for clearing up the car are made up of most fiberglass issue. But maby is his country cars only have bumpers, that could validate his polyer n fiberglass statement!

I was only refering to the outer body in my statements. Of course chassis et. al. are metal. On my 300, front/rear bumpers, trim around the bottom, grill and side mirror housings are plastic/polymer (whatever the term).

Don't try to pawn that idiot award off on me though

You're today's recipient. Tomorrow's another day.

no one mentioned anything about a frame even though they are made of metal.

I must tell you something, I got Xperia X1 with ROM version 1.02.936.3 date 08/29/08.
My phone is lagging abit when I switch the view of my panels but now this issue becomes more interesting because before I bought this phone I tried it abit in a store.
The panels switching was completely flawless, it went smoothly without any single stutter.
I read a short review of what the author said was close to the final product.
Somwhere (not sure) in the review he mentiones the ROM was dated september.
I have also read that Sony Ericsson (I think it was over at mobile-review.com) have sent Xperia X1 with "non-final" software where the system information shows 256 MB of ram while the final version is suppose to show 384 MB, with the first batch of the unit.
Is this true or not?
Where can I get the latest ROM?

Thanks in advance!

PS. I'm starting to love this phone DS.

What do you have running when it stutters?

Sorry, I don't quite understand your post. Do you mean its lagging in the beginning (when you tried in the shop) and now it is flawless or the other way around. ?

I've heard two version of story regarding windows mobile, one said that the phone will be significantly faster after a while due to the caching and indexing, and the other version said Windows mobile tends to be slow after long time use once you have more applications.....

I'm confused.... since this will be my first windows mobile phone, I really want to know.

According to the owner it is a release version, but that was "denounced" as a proto on here! so you tell me I only know that IF the versions in the shops (WHEN provides the networks with one that works!!!) are as poor they wont be selling many IMHO

hmm... that's interesting. Do you have any idea what couse the different and what makes you love this phone when its lagging ?

@NitroFan

I wonder, why most of the video review that've been shown look like there are no lagging except when changing the panel orientation (some of them). ?

Ok to my great surprise it doesn't stutter anymore in normal usage (probably never has).
It just stutters abit when you slide the phone and it swtiches to landscape mode while fiddle with your panels. Everything sorted now and my ROM version is also the latest one.
The phone itself is fast in most situations which is really nice.

So it's true that you get a movie with your Xperia X1, afterwards obviously

in my experience wm devices are quickest when you dont use any kind of covering software such as spb, panels, touchflow etc. but instead use the native wm homescreen.

There is one thing I don't get!!!

If it will support a ATI chip, what about tha X1's that are already out?

Posted by BIG-Stan
The ATI thing is just a marketing trick.
Those drivers are already in the Diamond/Pro and all the latest HTC phones...
Wihtout these drivers the panels wouldnt even run that good...
And I highly doubt that you can play PS1 games on it good enough...
What the guys meant is that you could run the new games that come out for WM and have "nicer" graphics then the older ones and perhaps some 3d stuff.....
dont get your hope to high!

Right, well the moment of truth.

Just had a call from Carphone Warehouse to advise they will be receiving stock in the warehouse tomorrow. 18 month contract, 1200 minutes , 1000 texts and unlimited internet - and apparently guaranteed delivery tomorrow.

Well, I shant get my hopes up. I've been told this before.

Posted by masseur
strange, I just called CPW twice and both confirmed no chance for guaranteed delivery tomorrow as they're not showing stock, so they can only place a pre-order, and they've been told to tell people it will be within the next week

Posted by PeterKay
Spoke to CPW earlier, they have no X1's in stock

only C905 x 190

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

Just got off the phone with VodaFone retentions also no X1's in stock today but they are expected soon. Apparently it is SE that is failing to deliver them when they say they will that is causing the delays.

So basically this was a joke from

http://www.esato.com/news/article.php/id=1806

??

Posted by Dogmann
@PK

Well maybe not intentional as some users in Sweden got theirs but before shipping appears to of started elsewhere the Networks apparently discovered a bug. Which has resulted SE in stopping shipments whilst they fixed it, now what would of been good would of been a small statement from SE explaining this to all their loyal and waiting users but as usual SE just doesn't do communication well not with it's users anyway.

Which is a shame as no information just makes them look really stupid especially as despite what they announced it is blatantly obvious to all just how incorrect that announcement was. Come on SE grow up and communicate with your users or are you really trying to force them to get fed up and buy a Touch Pro?

I'm not fed up and I am happy to wait, and indeed I did get a HTC touch while waiting. This isn't a life or death situation and I don't need this X1 for any mission critical task. I expect thats the same for most here. Its just a mobile device that we are enthusiastic about, and most of us already have one or more mobile devices while waiting for the next.

while I agree in principal that SE could be more communicative in regards to product availability in more finite terms that simply a quarter of a year, I'm not convinced repeating this plea to SE on here ad nauseam is really going to change anything. If they were going to take notice of us they would have done so along time ago.

Actually, I do think they were trying to communicate when they made the "end of sept" announcement at a time when all the press were saying the X1 was delayed until next year. I guess they won't do that again!

for interest, I did hunt around briefly yesterday for other manufacturers who have announced a delay in official press releases and give exact revised availability dates, but I found none. All i could find was heresay comments from "someone inside Nokia/Samsung/Motorola" or similar.

nah, the X1 will come soon and we'll all be happy again (queue birds whistling in the trees and children laughing in the streets!)

No worries, that makes sense then, I thought it strange when you said most cars have fibre glass bodies!! (I think of the body as the main shell, and the bumpers etc as ancillery components) btw, I didn't mean to offend or anything

I stand corrected, and its not only SE who don't have a clue

CPW just called me and my silver X1 will be delivered tomorrow

I explained what I was told earlier and he had no idea what they were talking about. We'll see tomorrow I guess

edit: and a further call to CPW now confirms they have a few in stock and mine is definitly allocated now... them birds are agonna starting singing!

I know there is another one around for selected testers that probably will be implemented in the next firmware update.

I received a call from CPW yesterday and I renew my o2 contract with them and they said I should receive my X1 on monday! I saw the black and the silver version yesterday. I must admitted that the silver one looks better but i am going to ge the black one from CPW though.

Hi Myp910 if your happy with that OK, go spend your hard earned money and enjoy your phone.

But I smell trouble with stuff like this are not going to be giving me my money back or be exchanging it for a Touch Pro IF it turns out this thing is a pile of problems just like my P990 was.

I no longer trust to deliver anything they promise, they even managed to balls up their most important launch in years, with the X1 Product Manager throwing in the infamous RAM issue you simply could not make it up could you!

So I am going to wait a bit, and see if it "does what it says on the tin" first.

Hi all,

Well in a another startling turn of events VodaFone called me and low and behold their stock also just arrived in their WareHouse.

But mine won't be with me until Monday but of course I will report if there is any branding or customisation and if it is locked or not. After which you can expect a full hands on review putting the X1 fully through it's paces.

This will be my first SE device in 28 months a long time to have been away i just hope I'm not disappointed.

Hi folks,

I've just returned from a shopping trip and asked in The Carphone Warehouse about the X1.

The guy was surprised to see ANOTHER person [me] asking about this phone and was even looking it up on the system as I went in.

He informed me that know one is buying the C905 because of the X1.

He also said that it could be in within a couple of weeks....

...and Play.com have added a new nearer date for release....28th instead of the 31st!

if it's a good phone, maybe i'll upgrade my G900 to X1 (thats sell and buy). Need some sample shots with X1 camera (even if it's a good phone, i expect to have a good camera because i don't have a digicam, so i only use mobile). If it's worse than G900, then it's a no no. Waiting for HTC HD

Got this from clove.co.uk a few minutes ago:

Price remains at an outstanding £425 excluding VAT.

If you have already placed an order with us you will be pleased to hear that your unit will be shipped Monday/Tuesday, subject to credit clearance. You do not need to do anything else.

i preordered with them. if they have it in stock, y are they shipping it out on monday and not today??!

Posted by s32bauer
Well, knew it was too good to be true.

Just called the Carphone Warehouse tracking team to make sure I will be getting it tomorrow. Just been told they don't actually have stock, the order has been entered as a pre-order and that no one will be getting their handsets this weekend.

Went through to Customer Services and was told that they did have stock, but it had only got to the warehouse a few hours ago. He even confirmed that I was down for Saturday delivery, but no handset - what the **** are they planning on delivering....hot air? That's about all Carphone Warehouse seem to be able to provide.

I called someone at 3pm, three hours after I had placed the order, and was told the order was confirmed and that they had it in-stock for tomorrow delivery.

All I'll say is (and I'm sure that you all know this by now), but don't get your hopes up if you've been promised delivery tomorrow from the CPW, cos in my case I was fed a load of ****

was that through o2 themselves or carphonewarehouse? I rang o2 and they said that stock will be ready next week...

@s32bauer, cpw have given me my city link tracking code and confirmed its showing as a Saturday delivery.

I guess if they can't get it out of the warehouse in time that might change things... we'll see

On Voda website on the specs list seems to suggest no SD Card included. Is this the same with other UK supplied X1's?

Posted by the_mont
Firstly Thanks JD!

Because you reported you just ordered your phone from Vodafone, mine is now on the way too!

However I missed the 6pm delivery for Monday cut-off, so will be with me on Tuesday. Mine is an upgrade from my P990i, so my deal reads as follows:

phone - free
contract 18 mnths
£35 pm
600 mins
unlimited texts
stop the clock
2Gb Micro SD card (negotiated over the phone, just be extra nice, it works for me )

One note though.... Vodafone are only licensed to sell the Black version, why? Weird eh? Anybody know why?

I normally prefer Silver, but I ain't gonna cry about getting my hands on one

ah... Just as I'm typing this, Vodafone have sent me a order confirmation message, guaranteeing Tuesday delivery between 8-18hrs. I WILL NOT BE LEAVING THE HOUSE THEN... better get my shopping in tomorrow and Monday, haha.

I will post a review, though some of the offers might be network carrier specific. For example I've heard vodafone UK, have put there own Sat Nav system on. So will let you know...
