I think you are on the right track. The Xperia is a laptop in a pocket.

Entertain yourself Watching your videos and movies, listen to your music, carry your photo album, Play games

And when you get serious, pull out the keyboard and send and receive Email, write some letters with WORD, keep your info with EXCEL

Organize your life with a Calendar, Phone Book and Notes

And as a bonus the GPS will take you where you are going. The Internet wil keep you inform, Google knows anything you want to know.

Plus you can take pictures, record videos and call your friends and tell them what a wonderful hand computer you have.

YES the Xperia is for you.
.
The Big and well speced keys will make your typing easier han those number keypads.

Yes I believe I saw somewhere and adapter. However you can buy a usb drive that uses microSD. You get the best of both worlds in one shot. Because you can have multiple microSD's in one USB drive and you can move stuff back and forth from your Xperia to any computer instantly.

Netbooks are far cheaper than X1 itself! how dare you comparing them!!! BTW Take note that X1 is still a pocket PC not a full fledged PC just like what netbooks like Eee or Inspiron mini or Acer one are. and Netbooks (with the exception of Eee PCs) have far more comfortable keys as well. Netbooks are far more powerful in terms of processing and also you can plug almost everything on netbooks using standard USB.

Heads up to people who have helpped me more than telling me the X1 might not be for me.
Just for your information and for people over at Mobile-review who believes I hate this phone. I don't hate it.
It was just not as good as I expected it to be.
I just had too high expectations.

Do the X1 support Sim Access Profile? Otherwise it's no good in my car with my HF kit installed.

(My current Tytn II support that...)

I use The Peak Trio which is a Micro SD card - SD adaptor that is also a USB adaptor. So I can use it in my compact camera, then transfer the images to my phone for editing and e-mailing and just plug it into a PC and transfer files back and forth it really works for me and as a bonus one little Micro SD card can also act as my PC briefcase and it all takes up no space at all.

Hi razec. You are PERFECTLY RIGHT. If that is for you. But other people want what is perfectly for them.

Let me dare to help someone with my opinon again.

I listen carefully what Athrunmoon apparently wants: a phone with some entertaiment and some light document editing. And his choices are Xperia X1 or Laptop.

The cheapest laptop won't do it. No phone, too much power for his documents needs and less convenient portable entertainment plus is a little heavier and hard to keep it in his pocket shirt.

His other choice, Xperia, can give all athat with some pluses.

He didn't mention price as one of his conditions. All of us here pay a little more for the convience of a mobile. However let's check the cost:

Very Cheap laptop $400
Cheap Camera with decent video recording $100
Cheap phone $50
Cheap GPS $200
Cheap MP3 player $50
Cheap Palm PDA $100
A bag to carry all that stuff $25
Weight several pounds
TOTAL $925 plus all the inconveniences

Xperia unlocked about $925 with all the conviniences
Weight 150 gm

Xperia branded in Europe from $0 to $500
in USA $300-$500

@athrunmoon,
So, athrunmoon, between the Laptop and Xperia according to your needs. I dare[B/] to recommend you the Xperia. If you give more wants and needs I can better help you to choose.

How much is an Xperia made out plastic, without keyboard, no UMTS, low resolution, 1.3 mp camera, no front camera, a lot other stuff missing?

one of swedens biggest tech-magazins gave Xperia quite bad judgements

it was to slow, (it react slow when you used the screen features).......and to many bugs.

the only thing they said was really good was the keyboard, screen & buildquality

i tried for quite long time some days ago...it was slow, but it was really cool to use screen anyway.

Pardon my ignorance about what exactly is SIM Access Profile. My son has a kit in his car, and your question created my interest. I looked at the specs and they say that it supports any Device with 1.1 bluetooth and any one of the profiles of the Xperia Bluetooth.

Doesn't that mean that the HF kit is the one that needs to be comparable with the Xperia?

Already discussed a few pages ago..
And it's seems to be a video they have made to make it look like someone is calling. You can see on the picture that they are in "Photos and videos".
Hehe..

I have got youtube to work.. but not so good. I get a really bad framerate.. about 1-2 fps at most. Anyone else tested to install all the codecs and players explained in this site and got it to work flawless?

Haha.. Just run a bandwidh-test when surfing via HSDPA! 1,98mbit download speed.

Hi skruttet,
Revisiting your post once more, because I came across with reliable info that might be important for you. It is so positive that I believe that if any device (Nokia) can do it the Xperia will have no problems.

From Bengal Boy forum: Posts 377 and 386
Perhaps yuo may want to place the Question there.

Bengal Boy: ..."As for the Car start question,,, my X1i bluetooth profile menu is the most complete I've ever seen on a Windows Mobile Device. Thank you Sony Ericsson for putting your bluetooth stack on the S.E.X1!! Super Sexy!!"...

QUESTION: 1. I have hbh ds980. I want to know whether you can control your tracks in media panel with bluetooth stereo. And can you use voice command in the media panel.

[B\\]Bengal Boy: "1. Yes, you can control tracks with a bluetooth headset when using the S.E.X1's media panel which is a "Media Player" application of Sony Ericsson's design. Check the photo of the S.E.X1's bluetooth profile's supported I posted.

[Picture of Xperia screen Bluetooth stack, similar to the one on the Xperia White paper specs]
This is SE's on bluetooth stack used on the device and it makes the X1i the most bluetooth friendly and best performing Windows Mobile Device I've used. Range with the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (Extended Data Rate) stack and a SE headset such as the DS-980 or 435a results in extended range and high voice quality.

Performance with MicroSofts Voice Command 1.6 for Mobile Professional devices is superb with voice dialing from a headset working flawlessly.

Bluetooth performance on a S.E.X1 will be the best available with current technology. "...

Perhaps this help...

Great fix done by P@itor from our friends at XDA-Developers.

Now you can have Opera as the default brawser for Google browser instead of the current default pocket IE.

EDIT: Fix it's only for Google browser.

Very good news. Microsoft's own Bluetooth stack for Windows Mobile is not much better than what they provide with Windows XP SP2. With XP SP2's built-in stack you get PAN and file transfer and that's it. On WM they also add headset and A2DP but nothing else. And the A2DP doesn't work very well on most handsets. Only a few like the HTC Kaiser (TyTN II) can play stereo audio to an A2DP headset without the sound skipping or pausing. The X1 coming with SE's own bluetooth stack should guarantee skip-free sound, at least when paired with an SE headset.

. . .

Typical of BengalBoy to call it S.E.X1.

I don't know but you need to contact their sales department. I had the same situation with my W980 but it was released week ago when I contacted their sales department.

Is there sombody that can verify the bluetooth settings because their should be a box that need to be checked to allow the Bluetooth HF Kit in the car to take charge of the radio in the X1. This is way it works my current Tytn II.

I don't have the X1 to try in my car directly otherwise I would have done that to verify if it works or not.

Your brave! there are some here that will want you sent to hell for daring to suggest the X1 is anything other than the greatest device ever conceived by man!. Personally I think the one's I have seen demonstrated run slowly and jerkily but apparently watching on a PC means you cannot see how fast they actualy are and not to forget they were all "prototypes" but no doubt we shall see how blindingly quick the X1 is eventually, that is of course if ever actually make the "retail" units available to buy.

When will they release a new FW that will fix the whole clock/battery thing.

I rather have the clock showing up there but then I never look how much battery I still have on there.

Second thing.

Why can't I listen to music through the media player when I have the phone on vibration. That is the most stupid thing ever.

Anyhow, like I've said before, this is the most amazing phone I've ever had.

So, the rest of the world still awaits. I would've thought by now we would have people with the "retail" version to share their experiences.

If you read through the last 20 pages, you can see that we are a few having the retail version. And we have shared some of our impressions of the phone. Compared to my P990 I am VERY satisfied with this phone, even though there are a few things that could be better.
If you have anything specific to ask, go ahead and I will do my best to answer it.

So the hardware (made by HTC) was good but not the software (written by Microsoft and Sony Ericsson)?
plankis! You will burn in hell for this! (Just kidding!)

Seriously, the slow response from the UI is only temporary after power on due to the use of NAND flash. Once you have it for a while and stuff gets cached in RAM the device will be much faster. Anyone with experience using WM5 and WM6 will tell you the same.

How do you get your album art in the first place? Do you use an iTunes account to get the free album art, or do you find the album art yourself and apply it manually?

If you use the free iTunes album art, it only works for iTunes and iPods. If you want it on any other device, you need to apply the album art yourself through searching google image search, etc.

Then that means you need to download MediaMonkey for your computer [check for mac]. You can get album art and it plays music on your computer.

Try my advice.

Of interest to Czech fans waiting for the Xperia X1:

I happen to work on the same business park as the SE service centre on the edge of Prague. When I walked back to the office this afternoon I saw a guy with the stainless steel verison of the X1 in one hand and a C905 in the other. They were testing the GPS system on the X1.

The SE guy confirmed that this X1 was a prototype, and that SIM free X1's won't hit the Czech market until February 2009. He wouldn't give much away, but he did say that T-Mobile would be the first Czech operator to offer this phone. Now I've seen an X1 up close, I have to say I'm impressed!
