What's the diference between:

Cellular phone? ...For Instance: ...?
PDA phone?
Smart Phone?
Pocket PC Phone?

Anyother designation?

Cellular phone = dumbphone, feature phone etc. - the ones that run on proprietary embedded platforms such as Nokia's S40 and A100/200.
PDA phone = PDA with phone functionality - a term commonly reserved for touchscreen-equipped devices running on Palm OS or WinMo. I'd say UIQ devices (P1, P9xx etc.) also fall under this category.
Smart phone = a phone with advanced capabilities, primarily due to the presence of a real OS and the support for installable apps - phones running on Symbian OS (S60, UIQ and MOAP), iPhone OS, Android, Blackberry OS are referred to as smart phones, though as we've seen in the past, some smart phones are quite dumb.
Pocket PC phone = a sub class of the PDA phone category - PPC phones run exclusively on WinMo. Desktop PCs are synonymous with Windows, so a Pocket PC is analogous to a desktop PC that fits in your pocket. Now whether most devices actually do that is debatable to some extent.

I was bored and phoned O2 upgrades.

The woman said that the phone would be released on w/c 20 October.

Then she checked her system and found out that it's actually pushed back to w/c 27 October !

you give new meaning to the word dedication (even if you were bored).

one of Expansys Friday deals tomorrow is that you can buy the X1 for £499.99 saving £85

its still only preorder (they say due sat 1st nov) and this still only brings it down to the price many others have by default, so make of that what you will

Expansys sell handsets that they source on the cheap that are meant for different regions but mark them up on their website as UK version as the firmware is somewhat generic but not specific.

I found this out after Sony Ericsson themselves confirmed a handset Expansys sold me was meant for another region, the handset was marked up as UK version on the exapnsys website and there was problems updating the firmware when the firmware was available for the UK. This was because the handset was obviously meant for a different region...

Take note especially when parting with £500 for a sim free handset. I know of a few people who have had similar problems and I'm suprised to see that company still having a mention, they won't want to know when you have problems later and that's why they have lost mine and others custom. Their pricing is more than other more reputable well known places anyway.

Also, does anybody know of any sites where photo shots taken by the X1 are shown? I'm interested to see the picture quality taken.

Yeah we did 3 sequels of Spy vs Spy. Some others: Astro Chase, Bristles, Boulder Dash, Rockford... We really had fun...

Youtube video shows that SE really improved speed of the OS. There is no lags. It's sooo important - at least for me. High-end phones shouldn'e have any lags. If X1 works like in the video after few months of usage and with some apps working it will be great phone.

One more thing SE - please make Opera Mobile 9.5 the default browser. As far as I'm concerned now it's not fully integrated. If SE does it, I'll probably buy this beauty

sometimes I don't understand their marketing strategy. Why magnus use prototype to demonstrate the capability of the phone ?... Maybe he thought nobody will pay attention to the lagging issue in his phone.

That's true. SDRAM is fast enough to share memory for video frame or video data. The real question is why 128MB ? that's huge!!! 16MG or max 32MB is more than enough for the bit map size of the Xperia.

Only part of it is used as the main framebuffer. The rest is used for 3D rendering (Z buffer for depth), doublebuffering etc. The same reason why most PC graphics cards have triple-digit MB of RAM.

Just spoke to O2 UK and they have been advised of a further delay this morning, and now don't even have an approximate date on their system.

i think that it will be week comencing 27th at the earliest. i was due an upgrade last month and my half price line rental has stopped so it is actually costing me money the longer i wait. Dont really fancy going on simplicity...

ughh... I don't really understand. What is the problem that causing the delays ? SE ? HTC manufaturing plan ? Mass production problem ? production shortage ? HTC manufacturing quality ? Service Provider ?

Anybody works in HTC production plan ? how many units have been produced ?

Based on my experience working with Sony Design center, we sometimes have problems with third party manfucaturer. Sometimes they can't meet Sony specifications. I don't know about HTC manufacturing capabilities.

Thing that gets me is why:

Confirmed official launch date for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
[Sep 10th 2008] Sony Ericsson has now confirmed the date for the availability of the Xperia X1. It will be initially available in UK, Germany and Sweden on September 30th

Who do they bother with this then not even make another "Confirmed official" announcement that the last one was utter dribble.

Sorry to be completely off topic (not that sorry really, not interested in the X1!) but really, have to applaud you for Spy vs Spy. What a fantastic game that was! I'd buy it again tomorrow in any format, it was brilliant.

I used to play it on my old Atari 800XL about twenty years ago, and in fact played it so much I wore the floppy disk out! I remember being absolutely gutted when it wouldn't load anymore, and I couldn't find another copy anywhere (this was in the days before the internet, and ebay!)

Well done for having a hand in such a long lost classic!

I've just learned from SE customer support that the X1 has the normal 2 year country-of-purchase warranty (except EU where warranty is EU wide) BUT...

apparantly the X1 comes with what SE call a "travel card" which grants worldwide warranty for the first 12 months!

its the first I have heard of it... has anyone heard of that before? what about the Swedish people here who have received retail units? was that included?

Posted by s32bauer
They have it in Carphone Warehouse stores in the UK, just been in and saw........I am of course referring to the dummy handsets lol.

I was surprised how small the keys on the keyboard were. I thought they would be the same size or bigger than those on my P1i. Still, it's a nice looking phone. Slider felt very cheap and 'gritty', but I'm guessing (and hoping!) that's just because it's a dummy model.

Posted by mobman
i assume you asked if they had the actual units in and they said no?

Yep, I was told that the release date is 20th October on the website, and they are also expecting their next delivery on 20th October, so fingers crossed.

As the sales person said, the phones aren't normally that far behind once the dummies in are in-store.

Posted by Residentevil
They better have a great warranty. That is what they own their customers after the P990 disaster.

I've just talked with Vodafone to upgrade my phone. He said the phone will be available in two days which is on 19th October 2008. He asked me to call back on Sunday.

I think 20th October is when we will see the availibity.

I really think that the phone is robust and feels like quality work by SE. The slider does not feel cheap in any way and i think that it was just the dummy. the buttons on the front is the only thing that feels a bit plastic. But its not a big thing, nothing I am thinking at when using..

Yeah What a time! I still have in my attic a couple of unopen boxes but no machine to play. I retire First Star Software in the early 90's. I believe they are now doing games for mobile. That was real programing. You had to get into the machine to get the best out those 3mhz cpu's

Yeah, for todays games, with all the effect, for transparencies, texture, shading etc you need multiple frames and data table for desktops computers.

But for the Xperia screen the main image display buffer with 16 bits is not even one MB, just about 700000. I don't think they have 32 bit for millions of colors but even if they do the image buffer would be only 1.5 MB. If we add all the necesary frame buffer and tables for effects I believe 32MB is enough.

Now if you are right and they use all 128MB just graphics processing OMG! the Xperia can be a monster game machine or a high level CAD

Yes, the travel card was included in the box I received.
There is a special phone number and a special email address for X1 support. I have called a few times and I feel quite confident that guys there have good knowledge about the phone. I got the impression that they are all using the phone themself.

I did a pre-order but haven't heared anything about an included movie. I only read some rumors it might be included with the phone. But it wasn't. At least not in my box.
There was, however, a memory card included. It was as big as 4GB, which was a positive surprise since I would have been glad to get a 2GB card.

This is annoying, sometimes when I play a music file it opens the file in Win Media while most of the time it's in the much more convenient SE player.
It's WMA file that fecks it up. How can I get everything to be opened by just one player?

Damn, that's bad news for me too.
But, if you're syncing with Windows Media Player on your desktop, you should be able to set the sync settings for your device (in this case, X1) to use MP3 format. I am interested to know whether this conversion will carry over the album artwork from Media Player, though... can someone test that out?
