Anyone know how to get rid of the panels completely? Uninstall is enough?
The panels sucks compared to running Xperia with "spb mobile shell" and "spb pocket plus". And the X-panel button could be mapped for better use..

It's a remarkable difference in response time when not running panels.

Gotta love the phone and all it features, but the panels are poorly implemented and doing more harm than use for users and SE.

Are you using 'spb pocket plus' for the scrolling capabilities?

Not very familiar with spb so wondered why you would use both...

Personally, from the video's and screen shots i've seen, spb does seem like the best 'everyday' way to use it...

No. Not using it for smart/smooth scrolling.

I use it mainly for the Today screen configurations.
The bonuses for the file explorer are cool.
The "close button" that actually kills the apps instead of running them in the background is a nice bonus too.

I got two mainscreens now. The "Today screen" and "Now screen" configured as I want.

My girlfriend got my P1 now.. where can I find the torch-app? Did a google-search but got to many hits. Anyone have a link? Or more info on to what to look for.

Sounds good mate... Screen shots would be cool!

Now I just gotta hope that the guys over at xdadevelopers sort out Blackberry Connect for it, then it could be on the cards for me!

sony ericsson has lied me about RAM, they said 128MB RAM of 384MB RAM is for 3D chip whereas SDRAM is not VRAM OR this moment x1 is still prototype product because i heard x1 date is pushed back to end of october (weeks 44)..

SE never lied about video ram. No SE rep ever said there was 128MB ram for video. What was said was that there was 384MB RAM. There was never any mention of video.

btw, SDRAM can be used for video, infact 90% of pc motherboards on the market have onboard video chips that utilise RAM for memory.

I believe the "3D chip" is actually built into the MSM7200a processor and not a separate chip. And there is not 128MB anywhere onboard this processor.

No wonder are not saying anything official!
They must be praying the whole horrible RAM issue will just go away, as for la la Leigh she must be fuming, that product Mgr made such a c**k up over the amount of RAM in the X1 on the web cast.

Still its all just another day on Sony Ericsson's road to self destruction, and they wonder why they are hemorrhaging money, the reason is simple, they stick far to rigidly to their policy of only recruiting truly "clueless" people!

ps In my opinion Johnny -X and Xperiancers are a total waste of time and money especially as 16 days after the products official release you still cannot buy it! (at least not in the UK)

instead of wasting money on that Johnny X garbage, y cant they use those money to make employess work overtime instead! so we can get our X1! i'm know it' out in sweden, but they said Sweden, UK, germany release at same day on 9/30/2008? hahahaha

Hi

The spec sheet for MSM7200 says the following:
"Up to Video Graphics Array (VGA) resolution"
That usually means 640x480 resolution.

And I have read somewhere that X1 has an extra 3D chip, I think it was from ATI.

@joel80, you can do it as standard using bluetooth or cable connection or (and I prefer this) you can buy wm wifi router as that does a good job.

I've connected my iphone and pc through wifi to my WM 3g connection with great results and will continue to do so on the X1

Thanks.. WmWifirouter seems to be the perfekt candidate.. trial works perfekt!

I don't have the option to use bluetooth or cable connection to share the connection just from my phone to the mac. SE/Microsoft hasn't relesed any drivers for that to work with a Mac yet.

Just have to tell you to get WM6 Remote Desktop if you use to connect to your computer while away from home! It works so good.. Got my whole desktop and all my programs and files directly in my phone wherever i am. Nice if you need to send/mail/find anything while away and don't have the file on your phone.

Only downsize is that it change the desktop-setting on your computer to 800x480, this makes all your icons change place and it's a bit of a mess. I have solved this by making another user on my computer that I only use with the phone to connect with.. Then I don't mess up my main user desktop.

I guess it does.. it's standard remote desktop. I have only tried with XP pro 64.

Another thing...
I hope it's only because of my extreme usage now in the beginning, but I have to load the phone 2 times ina 24h period. Hm.. Not that good.. But I guess surfing via WiFi and 3G and using Tomtom and so on is to blame.

Try to imagine how long the battery of a standard notebook would last. You would have to load it at least 2 times a day on heavy usage... you are almost using your X1 as a notebook... no wonder then

It works perfect so far.. Really quick to connect and both google maps and tomtom finds satellites right away. Not near the minute or two it took for my external bt gps to connect to my P1.

@Cyber.bee
Yea, i know I almost use it as a notebook... I will have to wait a week or two to really know the battery-time.

Is there a site with alot of cool programs to install on my X1.

I saw Skype but don't know which one to download, "For Smartphones" or "For PC Pocket"? When I did some configuring with my phone it said "bla bla you pcket pc" so I'm confused.

And how do I install them? Do I download them straight to my phone from the website and install or do I have to go through my PC?

If you go here: http://www.skype.com/intl/sv/download/skype/windowsmobile/
you can download the PC Pocket version.. (That´s for windows mobile)
If you read on the page you can see that "advance users" can download the cab-file direct. THe cab-file can be downloaded/installed directly from the phone. The exe needs to be runned on a PC and then when you use the sync-software it will install the program.

Ok, so the X1 is a pocket PC, not a smartphone?

On software sites where they ask Pocket PC or Windows Smartphone, you want Pocket PC, or Windows Mobile Professional, if it says that.

'Smartphone' is referring to the Windows Mobile phones that do NOT have a touchscreen, such as the Blackjack; the software has to be optimized for a different screen resolution and to respond to keys only.

What's the diference between:

Cellular phone? ...For Instance: ...?
PDA phone?
Smart Phone?
Pocket PC Phone?

Anyother designation?

Posted by Creid
Cellular phone = JAVA

PDA phone = (personal digital assistant) not phone

Smart Phone = (no touchsreen) WindowsMobile

Pocket PC Phone = (touchsreen) WindowsMobile pro (high res)

smartphones can have touchscreens eg UIQ3 (P1 is a smartphone)

Its confusing, someone may answer it more clearly

Cellular phone = dumbphone, feature phone etc. - the ones that run on proprietary embedded platforms such as Nokia's S40 and A100/200.
PDA phone = PDA with phone functionality - a term commonly reserved for touchscreen-equipped devices running on Palm OS or WinMo. I'd say UIQ devices (P1, P9xx etc.) also fall under this category.
Smart phone = a phone with advanced capabilities, primarily due to the presence of a real OS and the support for installable apps - phones running on Symbian OS (S60, UIQ and MOAP), iPhone OS, Android, Blackberry OS are referred to as smart phones, though as we've seen in the past, some smart phones are quite dumb.
Pocket PC phone = a sub class of the PDA phone category - PPC phones run exclusively on WinMo. Desktop PCs are synonymous with Windows, so a Pocket PC is analogous to a desktop PC that fits in your pocket. Now whether most devices actually do that is debatable to some extent.

The whole thing is just marketing speak, with each device is given a "lable" in an attempt to give each product a "USP" or "niche" to distinguish it from its competitors or to appeal to a particular customer sector

"Cellular Phones" are called "Mobile phones" in the UK, so who is correct? you pay your money and take your choice!

PDA, Smart & Pocket PC Phones are all exactly the same thing! some will have a touch screen interface and some will have a key interface and some will have a key and keyboard interface.

You could even start to classify mobile phones with built in storage capacity and optimized for music playback as "Music Phones" but what do you then classify the W960 as? it is all of the above!

The one thing we can be certain of is that they ALL share one common theme, in so much as they are all small computers combined with GSM and other telephony and data communications circuitry.

I prefer to refer to all such items as a "Device" but then I am not a marketing person!

Perhaps a better description would be " A Pocket Sized Personal Voice & Data Communication, Organizing, Entertainment and Direction Finding Device"

Vodafone had a release date of the 17th October, but I have "just" been told by them that this date has slipped out til Friday 24th October.

I qualify for a free upgrade too. Happy days . Only reporting to have it in black though... hmmmm, I think I prefer silver, thoughts any black or silver owners?

Thanks,
Chris

I'm that close to cancelling my contract with Carphone Warehouse. They have stock, they don't, they have stock they don't. No one knows jack-s**t in that company, and O2 aren't any better. In fact they don't even have it on their Coming Soon page, despite having other handsets for November release.

Damn Vodafone for branding their phones, if they didn't at least there is some network operator with an actual release date.

Posted by s32bauer
What's the cheapest people have found the handset Sim Free? I thought it was Play.com with £499, however Sony Ericsson now have it available for pre-order for £480.00 - not a lot of difference, but as they say, ever penny counts! lol

Posted by mobman
to be honest i think the o2 have the right idea... not giving a release date for something knowbody knows when will be released.

I'm not too annoyed that the release date keeps slipping, it's more the fact that companies seem to give different information depending on what employee you speak to. I just called O2 a minute ago and was told that they will be having stock in available to sell from tomorrow. We all know that's not going to happen, but it's just a shame that companies can't be more like Vodafone. I know their release date keeps slipping, but at least they seem to give you a release date thats the same regardless of who you speak to.

Oh well, it comes when it comes I suppose!

Soo........is it officially out yet? or not so much? Anyone have one they've BOUGHT and playing with it yet? While ___Boy and others have their reviews, I'm waiting to see USER reviews before I decide whether or not to buy this thing.

SE phones are great, but I'm still fuming about the P990 I bought. So I'm playing this one cautiously. That being said. I'm looking to buy a new phone SOON.

That's true. SDRAM is fast enough to share memory for video frame or video data. The real question is why 128MB ? that's huge!!! 16MG or max 32MB is more than enough for the bit map size of the Xperia.

one of Expansys Friday deals tomorrow is that you can buy the X1 for £499.99 saving £85

its still only preorder (they say due sat 1st nov) and this still only brings it down to the price many others have by default, so make of that what you will

Posted by the_mont
So still not out yet anywhere in the UK basically. Vodafone do try and brand phones, though, I don't think they'll be able to do much with this one, as that would include changing the default panels. Wait and see I suppose...

On another note: when I had the conversation about the release date, vodaone apparently have the phone ready but not in stock as they might be waiting to launch it at the same time as another offering (can't remember which phone because, quite frankly I didn't care, lol). One thing I do know, is that it's not showing up as being in warehouse stock. As soon as that happens, phones are able to be picked for shipping approx 24-48hrs after that stage.

On a-another note:
Spoke to Sony Ericsson support today, the phone supports Mirco SDHC cards, not just Micro SD .

Expansys is one of the most Expensive shops I ever came across, the phones cost at least 30 to 150 Euros more than at a local shop.
