The best thing about the BengalBoy review is it's interactive. I left a few questions over there, but, I can't check for the answers yet because they don't let us look at kittens while at work.

I wouldn't necessarily expect the Touch Pro to be "nippy", although it may well benefit from being slightly later in the development cycle than the Diamond (you can bet the Diamond will get faster ROMs soon enough). It will be a reliable workhorse though, and it'll be cheaply available from every network, before the "premium" X1 gets out the door. It remains the sensible choice for anyone after a decent WM handset (who's not wedded to SE).

Incidentally, I can't imagine anything less likely to sell me a phone than "bengalboy's" recommendation...

I’ve been using the HTC Touch as my regular phone for over a year, so I won’t deny it. I jumped up and down a bit, such was my excitement to hear about the new “improved” version - the HTC Touch Diamond. And I was almost buzzing with anticipation when it arrived in the office yesterday.

But I’ll be honest. My first few experiences with the phone have dampened my ardour. It looks quite nice, with its diamondesque back and glass-dominated front, but it’s so slow it makes a British tennis player look nippy around the court.

I have to react: I have the diamond since 7 days, there are already 5/6 new roms available, I already flashed it with 2 different roms, and my diamond is really really fast.
Plus, TF3D is awesome (functionnality+speed+beauty), the only times you see WM interface is for advanced settings, calendar or 3rd party apps.

Sounds great that things are beautified. But, 5 or 6 ROMs already available? Diamond just hit the market didn't it? What are those updates addressing? Did HTC rush this thing to the market or something.

Posted by Peio
I'm a newby at all those rom thing, but the first diamonds available on the net were imported from hong-kong, that was the first HTC rom. Then it was available in other countries and there is now a "asia rom", "UK rom", "french rom" etc that fixes some bugs, + other improved hand-made rom by xda-developpers

As this thing is going to be a slider, Has anyone here used any of the HTC sliders? Do they get floppy and slack like the N95?

I have been told by a high up at Ericsson, that SE are only using the chip from HTC but I am not sure I believe that! and given SE's ability to produce shoddy cheap handsets I have some reservations as to the long term quality of the X1

Seeing as how X1 is an SE design, blame for poor build quality should not be go to HTC. HTC is just following instructions. X1 is not a typical plasticy build. So far, the build quality has been praised in reviews--especially the sliding mechanism. The battery cover needs work. Of course, no one knows the long-term reliability of the X1.

My Tytn II is still in good shape after 8 months (and a lot of drops and knocks). The slider is still quite firm, and the tilting hinges still hold the screen up just fine. HTC build quality is generally pretty good, but obviously a lot of that is down to the design and specification it's built to, which in this case is supposedly SE's.

That is what's bothering me, SE ant build cases for toffee! my P1 back creaks like fury and the back on my W960i is bowed and moves all the time. I think Iam going to wait on my next purchase a good deal longer this time. I realy am sick of spending hard earned cash on devices that simply start too feel 5 years old in as many months! If anyone from is reading this IT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH sort it out.

You have a point about SE build quality, which on some models isn't up to standard. But the P1i and W960i are not a sliders so I wouldn't compare those. I would look to the W910i, and W850i which both have very solid sliders. I have a W910i which has stayed solid the whole time I have owned it, and I have heard even better reports about the W850i. However, the W580i and its sister phone the S500i kind of offset this with a pretty poor record.

Kind of inconclusive huh? I'd say to wait a month or two after it comes out. Wait and see what people's reactions are. If you can't wait, then read a hell of a lot of reviews!

Posted by WhyBe
Isn't build-quality directly related to price-points? IOW, because of cost factors, lower-end phones won't be as robustly built as high-end ones.

Posted by Residentevil
That is correct. Lower cost more rattle. Higher cost less rattle.

Well that's what supposed to happen. Whether or not that's the case for the product, you never know.

But many have commented on the X1's amazing build quality and the nice arc-slider design.

Well according to the only person I have seen who is actually using the phone on a daily basis it's getting pretty slick but there does appear to be some worries appearing for the US market in terms of reduced fuctionality.

Hopefully, the X1i will work in many US markets (including 3G). He is currently using the X1i. The X1a is the one with the video recording restrictions.

Sweet can't wait.

I have just returned from the Sony Ericsson store on High Street Kensington, in London, where I went to enquire about the availability of the Xperia.

Disappointingly, I was informed that the Xperia would not be available [from them] until "towards the end of the year, Christmas time". Previously, they had said July - now.

We shall have to wait and see if the statement becomes reality! However, by Christmas, I suspect there will be new similar, and perhaps better, phones on the market, and the Xperia's marketing shine will have dulled.

So, can I wait? At the moment the Xperia's shine is bright enough for me to wait! But who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Reports about availability are very different. In Holland there are web shops that claim an August/September release.

Not sure if this has been posted already but the Xperia whitepaper has been updated to R3. The noticable thing i saw updated was RAM, from 192 to 256MB.

Yes, it has been posted earlier. Infact, its posted a long time ago. But, R2 itself showed the RAM increase to 256mb. There was no whitepaper with 192mb RAM. R3 was released just a few days after R2 with some minor corrections.
There is a complete new topic about this i.e. Xperia whitepapers have been revisited.
About the release date, i found this on inxperia.com
"French site Mobinaute is reporting that David Mignot, Sony Ericsson-France marketing director, has announced that the XPERIA X1 is coming to France on mid-October. The price of the X1 is expected to be 700 Euros (about $1085) outside the carrier."

It stated on tha R3 that it support Youtube 3GPP

What does that mean?
Normal version:) or mobile version:( of youtube?

Unfortunately so. But they aren't too bad. It's a prototype afterall, whereas the touches were released already and the i900 is almost at liftoff. Lots of time for SE to improve the quality, and I'm sure they can.

The Diamond pics looks best. I wonder why Touch Pro and Diamond don't look the same? It looks like the X1 has a dirty or scratched lens. The X1 pics look hazy...very unlike BengalBoy pics with X1. The i900 shows proof that more megapixels doesn't mean better pictures

Posted by RandomCarpet
Did you notice the EXIF data of the X1 pictures
Quite strange IMO, suppose either those pics are taken by a rather early prototype or that is not X1 at all.

Posted by Mizzle
They're not blurry. They're diffused. HUGE difference. If they were blurry, it would be either the camera module or the person taking the photos' fault. Diffusion is a whole other story, and is mainly about colours - faded colours and over-exposed whites. In the case of the first photos, it's not really hard to see why the whites are over-exposed. The focus is on the trees (a darker area), so the camera adjusts to the dark area, and bang, you'll end up with over-exposed areas - in all of the photos, although the X1 and Samsung's Omnia perform worst.

So basically this is a software issue?

Posted by spine6
it may be software or hardware, but why is that on this test, the captured picture from x1 looks like from a P900/P910i capture e.g. white balance, colours etc are worst ever.. its very different from bengaboy x1 captured. Well it's still a proto so will wait for the flagship phone before finalizing our analysis..

Posted by Mizzle
Yep, it's software only. Anyhow, I think this is an old software, as I've seen better from X1 in similar circumstances.

Posted by strizlow800
Well softwares may wary in different prototypes... The real power of the X1 camera should be seen when the oficial phone is out (with oficial bug free firmware)... This will take some time though...

Posted by Humble
Hi all not long now for the x1, But let me start by fresh News, My earlier post on this forum was about the decision whether to wait a little longer for the new patforms in Q4, well guess what it appears that Motorola are releasing one this October with nvidia Tegra, 8 megapixel camera
