"Japan will have some new Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phones to join the DoCoMo SO905iCS. There will a total of two, one called the W61S and the other, W62S. Both will be featured in the KDDI network. The W61S is a slider (shown in the first 7 pics) and the W62S will be a clamshell (shown in the last two pics). the W61S will feature a 5.1 mega pixel AF camera (Exmor CMOS sensor up to ISO1600) and strong LED flash (don't know why no xenon...), 2.8 inch WVGA 260K color screen (480x864), CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Rev.A support, microSD support and measures 50×114×23 mm. It also has an automatic lens cover unlike the SO905iCS. Of course, the phones will be available in a variety of colors. They will be officially announced soon. I can't wait for better pics (and live pics)."

lucky japanese as usual.can't wait to see their new cybershot phones though...

at least these have 260k instead of 256k that non japan .

Posted by Ranjith
are the usual SE's like k850,w850 etc available in Japan or do they have a totally diff line up?

Posted by goldenface
Total different.

The only design I know of thats appeared in Japan is the Z800i/V800i. clamshell under Vodafone Japan, which I think was then sold to Softbank.

I would so much prefer that camera cover than the glass cover on the K850i!

geezz... and that model from the picture ain't bad either..

lol, you do know that neither of these are correct, right? The correct one would be 262k as the displays can display up to 262.144 colours (18 bits) - 2^18

There are quite a few reasons why they (and other manufacturers in Japan) can't release their Japanese phones globally.

The main one I think is because if the chip manufacturers (Fujitsu, etc)devoted their resources ramping up production of their chips for a global launch of a particular handset, then the developement of new chips for their home market of Japan would surely suffer, something which I don't think they can afford to do.

The phones would also be very expensive and they would have to be sure that the demand was there for such devices, which have many features which are operator dependant, such as the many GPS location and security services.

One day they might do but not quite yet.

G800 isn't that big though

There are some excellent pictures on the Japanese SE site.
Don't worry if you can't read Japanese. The navigation links are obvious.
If anyone has any technical info on the phone, I would be grateful. Specifically, does it have an FM radio with an internal aerial? The W760 sports this feature, which means you can listen to the radio without attaching the earphones.

Quick description of some of the features as provided by Crave.

"It's true when they say the best stuff can usually be found in Japan only. While the rest of the world is ogling at the latest mobiles from Sony Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Japanese-Swedish phone maker has already announced in Japan the W61S--possibly the most feature-packed Cyber-shot to date.

Set to debut with operator KDDI this March/April, the W61S is loaded with an extensive camera feature set that puts it almost on par with some midrange standalone cameras. Onboard are a 5.11-megapixel CMOS sensor (employing the same "Exmor" technology as the Sony Alpha dSLRs) and 3x optical zoom lens. In addition to anti-shake and autofocus, the camera-phone also comes with Kaokime Lite (auto brightness with face detection for natural skin tones) and Smile Shutter Lite (similar to the Smile Shutter for the T200).

What's noteworthy about the W61S is that its cutting-edge features extend beyond its camera profile. For instance, it comes with onboard GPS which allows geotagging of images. A 2.8-inch WVGA (480×800) screen equipped with Bravia technology will also be something worth looking out for, not to mention a microSD card slot, Bluetooth, TV-out, LED flash and automatic lens cover. Unfortunately, the W61S will work on only CDMA 1XWIN networks supporting EV-DO Rev.A technology. So until a GSM version comes out, if it ever does, this remains pretty much a Japan-only handset for the rest of the Asia and the world to get green-eyed over."
