Ill start off by saying that I bought my phone off ebay. That was a stupid thing to do I admit coz you basically get no warranty. But id had so much faith in Sony-Ericsson that it didn’t bother me.
I had only had my phone for a week until I started noticing dust underneath the glass lens cover. It seemed every day there was more and more. So I removed the glass by prying a pin underneath it, and as you can see from the photos, my finger slipped! Worse than that, the adhesive strip holding the glass cover to the lens was damaged, so I had to use glue. And now my phone looks like this.
Im really hating myself for doing that. I should have just learnt to live with the 30+ specs of dust on the lens. The dust is gone and the camera still works, but it would have been so easy to ruin it beyond repair.
On top of that, made the mistake of getting one of those clear crystal cases off ebay to protect my phone. What you see in the photo isn’t dust, they’re deep scratches that the case put on the keypad. There are scratches on the other side of the keyboard too, and ive noticed a few smaller ones on the screen.
But worst of all, I updated my phone to the R1CA037 firmware this week (from the 029 firmware the phone came with), and now I cant take portrait photos without getting really bad flashburn. The photo of my hand would come up perfectly with the old firmware. So now my camera is rendered useless until Sony-Ericsson releases a firmware update, coz 99% of photos people take with camera phones are portraits.
Ive only had this phone for 3 weeks but it looks like its 3 years old! I know this is entirely my fault, but I cant help but feeling like none of this would have happened if Sony-Ericsson hadn’t released a dodgy product. I cant help shaking that feeling of being ripped off. Ive been taking out my frustration by recommending Nokias to my friends.

Would've been better to take the phone fully apart using a T6 screwdriver, would have been quicker and easier, not to mention easier on the finish!

OUCH! That was once a k850!

o dear, That's why I avoide phones off ebay. More trouble that its worth these days because you just don't know what a user has done to it.

Unlucky bro, i just hope you have learnt your lesson hey

I once was an avid user of the crystal cases .... not any more, sympathies bro.

I never trusted these crystal cases since it's inauguration in the market . . . I know that sooner or later it's HARD-plastic made corners will bring scratches on the fone

If anyone finds any dust underneath the lens cover please just try and put a vac on the loud speakerand it will suck out the crap under the lens cover.
No need to take phone apart to clear muck underneath the lens.

Best way to fix your problem not expensive also

Hey Squao, won't the vac afffect the other part of the phone?
I mean, the vac would suck hard enough anything it can suck.....
Don't you suppose to be careful about that??
Or it's just me that too worried?? ;p

I removed the lens cover a few times and cleaned the dust but carefully! Glue strip broke here too but I used small amount of glue which is invisible from outside so my K850i lens looks like new!

Exactly, the key word is "carefully"
1. If you stick anything sharp near the shiny surface of the K850 and don't excercise due caution how is this SE's fault?
2. If you use a crystal case, shown by many, and even covered in this forum, to be a poor method for protecting one's phone how is this SE's fault? Wouldn't a leather case be a better means of protection? I know in my experience the only cases that provide adequate protection are quality leather cases. Crysatal cases are bulky, scratch the unit easily, harbour dust and dirt particles between the case and the phone that cause scratches and they are just plain useless at protecting a phone.
3. Why update the firmware if everything is working??? Okay I concede if the firmware has caused flash problems this is poor on SE's part. But again, if it ain't broke why fix it? Re: the flash burn, he should try under exposing the pictures a bit, I find on my K800 flashburn can be a problem and often necesitates manual settings.
4. Rule number one of mobile phone repairs, if you are going to take your phone apart, the correct tool is a torx screwdriver, not a pin, hammer, blowtorch or plastic explosives.

Yikes.
I had the same problem as you; dust under the lens. But you know what? I bought a can of compressed air with the tube extension for a high-pressure stream. I fired the air at the crack (like in your first picture, around the camera rim) and all the dust dissapeared. It was easy as that, and saved me the hassle of opening the phone.
Perhaps you ought to consider other solutions before doing something as drastic (and stupid) to your phone!
(by the way, I 100% agree with you on the flashburn, it's horrid and it reminds me of the K800i flashburn, hoped the K850i, being the ultimate of the Cybershot series, would fix this crap)

Ouch! Sorry mate.

ha! he mistakenly scratched the phone and is feeling bad about it.
the way i feel about mine, i'd happily give break it into pieces with a hammer.
Bloody thing! admit it people, the current firmware sucks. use the k850, then hold a w810, k750,w580 or just about any damn SE phone and see the difference. what do we dish out the extra cash for? this? waiting for months for a bloody firmware update? if the phone was imperfect, why release it in the first place? why not release a good,if not perfect, final product instead of a shoddy one that creates bad publicity and harms the company's image?
I'm sorry to say, but if u analyse ESATO:
"only take a Sony Ericsson"
the whole purpose of this site is being ruined thanx to the numb skulls in the SE admin!
and yeah, NOKIAS!

I really can't understand what great brains in SE thought of putting a glass protection cover over the actual lens cover. The job of the cover is supposed to be protecting from dust, scratches and lens damage. Having a glass cover over the cover is like disabling the actuall cover! If the glass cover gets scratched or broken, it's like having no cover at all!! And far from all these, it isn't even dustproof!!
I much-much prefer the k810. The best SE phone so ever!

I have been using Sony Ericsson phones from the moment they became Sony Ericsson. I love the phones, they are fantastic but one thing they are NOT is the old Nokia green screens that would still work after bing dropped from a three story building. We gotta be somewhat gentle with them.
1. K850 camera flash being too bright: Try setting scenes to "documents"
2. Try flashing your phone with a firmware specific to the region your in. I flashed mine with some Southern Asia firmware and the 3G would not work at all.

Haha, my old K750 (before I lost it) was indestructable! I dropped it in a half full cup of water and the toilet and it still survived!! Worked perfect in fact after being dried out and cleaned lol.
