@will try adding the code for the default page, it may work then?
I tried that. The site is still jacked. I removed the .htaccess files that I created and it worked sweetly again. I must be using the wrong MIME type for AMR files.
Does anyone know the MIME type for AMR?? Heelllppp

Yeah, that must be the problem... Ill try and find out the type for u...

Is it too large? (dimensions) btw, regarding .htaccess, what os and server are u using? Do u have front page extensions installed?
Posted by will190780
Dimensions are as t68 101 by 80. I am using xp & ideal hosting. No I dont have front page extensions installed. Whats all that about?
Posted by chrisgray999
Is it apache or IIS? I ask cos only apache supports .htaccess i think, and apache is usually found on linux... Front page extensions use .htaccess, and sometimes editing it can disrupt the site... Dont know about the image mate, sorry!

@aled that would be cool - I dont know if my free host supports cgi-bin - I'll check - you'll have to leave instructions aswell - as to what the hell I do with it
@ @ @ @ I have broadband aswell - but dont know anything about hosting a server - as you can see my html programming is limited & wml I haven't got a clue! - but it would make sense to have a server with mime types at your disposal... & the cost @ @ @ @

How do I upload MIME types to a server? Also does it make any difference that I can download this filetype through the web?
yep - I have themes .thm files on a free host & I can download them via IE because it is hosting the file - I cannot download via my wap browser though because the server can't define the file type - or some crap - so yes it makes the difference - I have mailed wap41 & they said they added the mime type for themes but it says operation failed - so I have just given up & will put a link to another theme wap site - or set links & leech from their site

(if you are viewing via wap this is a long post)
@aled you were right - it is a zeus server - "upgrading the current Windows NT and IIS based PWP solution to a Zeus/Solaris based product"
@chris gray - I can have pretty much anything - perl - shell - PHP - ASP - python - but I have to pay for this so I dont know if it would be worth it?
@will190780 - IME [Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions] Types tell the end user's machine how to treat a certain file extension when it is served to it by a web server. They go in the web server's configuration or in a .htaccess file
How do I add a MIME Type?
Put it in a .htaccess file. It needs to be in Apache configuration format, e.g. to tell the server how to treat a file with a .cgi extension you would add this using the AddType directive:
AddType application/x-httpd-cgi cgi
Note that you do not use a "." before the file extension. The web server already knows to put this in.
You can have as many entries as you like, as long as they are all on their own line and the MIME type and the extension have at least one space between them.
The amount white space is irrelevant, so tabulating these files will make them easier to review and manage. You can also assign more than one extension to a MIME type by adding to the end of the assigned extension, as long as they are space separated.
sorry if you know this - I dont know it goes over my head

@orangeman: i can bung it on my server if u want? Dont know if it would work though...

@ Everyone...
There seems to be an awful lot of talk in here about Web Space, and FTP, I have to point a few things out;
You will never find a free bit of webspace that supports FTP and .wml. Its not that web space does not like the extention, but its not set up to deal with it. If you have a Linux server, you have the default pages, "index.html, index.htm index.php" and if you have an IIS server, you have the default pages "default.asp, default.html, default.htm index.html, index.htm, index.asp" so when you first visit these sites, and type in the address "www.awapsite.co.uk" the server will give you one of the default pages, unless you own your own webspace or server, you will never be able to chage or add a default page "index.wml, default.wml" so it will never work. You really need to buy your own webspace, try www.4web-space.com - they are really good, and v.cheap with the best customer support I have ever seen.

Yes, your code is right, but you need to save any wap site as .xml, or .wml, however, only new browsers can see .xml pages, but it should work ok on most phones, to get total coverage, you need to drop xml and any extensible language, as there will never be a time when all phone's support this. You must never save a wap site as anything other than .xml, and .wml

@john: thought u could save as .php or .asp etc? Esato does....

@orangeman, i got your pm but cant reply properly until i get back to college tomorrow. I checked out your site, how the hell did you do the text thing?
Posted by Aled
@j_oates
ummm, dont know where your getting this from but i think u'll find there are many free hosts offering webspace with ftp access, it is the normal way of transferring files (how else r u supposed to do it???)
the default page displayed depends entirly on the servers settings and what type of server it is makes no difference (i have apache here and if i want my default page to be uyftfdi7n.html i can
wml should be saved as wml true enough, but many wapsites are now being done in xhtml, personally i would save these as .html otherwise many browsers will handle them incorrectly (many comercial websites are now being changed into xhtml too and they will all be .html extension)
as far as front page extensions are concerned, they are a pain in the arse! theuyy were introduced by microsloth just to get a toe in on the web server market which is ruled by linux, linux is stable, and completely free to obtain (as is the 99% of the software on it) this pisses bill gits off no end (and never have to pay 4 software again)
so evry1 install linux and watch microsloth go out of business
besides mozilla is miles better (and more stable) than internet exploder.
Posted by j_oates2003
@Aled,
I was mearly stating, that most free hosts do not support FTP access, or rather, they do, but would prefer you to use their own web-based uploaders, take a look at giocities, lycos, brinkster etc, all web-based uploads, no FTP there! Also, I know you can set the default page to what you like, thats exactly what I said, but again, most free web-hosts do not like you doing this, and therefore you have to use the ones they set, e.g. index.htm, or default.htm, very few have index.wml as a default page, again, try doing it on virtually any free web-host! I have my own server, and know how they are run, I have set mine up so it has default.wml as a defualt page, so free ones have this, most DON'T!
As for Front-Page extentions, I don't remember mentioning them, but they are actually useful, they mean on a IIS server (excuse me mate, I admire your support for 'nix, but IIS is much more stable than it, no matter what you say... do you see any big - server dependet - online shops on Apache? Is Amazon? Is eBay? Is Tessco using Apache, NO, they use either IIS, or the more stable SUN microsystems server base) you can control MIME without actually being an admin on the system, and also help control "checkin/checkout" when a lot of people are working on a project - are you a web designer?
@orangeman
Ehm, sorry to dissapoint, but either you have not copied it exactly, or SonyEricsson don't know what there going on about... you have left out the "<" before ever "img" tag, your lines of "img" code should look like this:
| Code: |
|
Hope this helps you both!

cheers - I knew it was something stupid like that - thats what I get for trying to write a page at 2am after 12hrs of work - Ive just found a page on W3C that juices ur code - Ill run it through there - thanks again

greetings - Just found something pretty handy if you write in xhtml - I have found a good way to advertise your wap site for free - put a normal 'href-mailto' link on your wap site & put your wap address in there as the 'e-mail address' - When a T68i/T300 clicks on it-it brings up the SMS menu. So users who visit your site can forward your wap address to their freinds... and they pay for it!!! check the mail or big banana gifs/links on my site.

how do i create a colored *.wbmp image?
Posted by wapchimp
I dont think u can-you can use gif files
Posted by jcpsad
can i use gif instead of wbmp?
Posted by j_oates2003
You can not create a colour wbmp, as it is actually a Greyscale 1-bit .bmp, with a changed extention for the wireless device, if it was colour, it would lose its greyscale, and if it was to have more than one colour, it would lose its 1-bit map, so no, it is not possiable. However, most (nearly all) colour phones support .gif and .jpeg as a colour image, so you will have to use them, all SonyEricsson phones from the T39 up support 4-bit Greyscale, and can read .gif, so a multi-colour .gif shows up fine on those too. If you need colour, allways use .gif, you can download a 256Exact palette from the web (used on all 256 colour devices) or I can send you it if you post your e-mail address, for use in Fireworks or Photoshop to export .gif's in correct colour for mobile devices. Make sure you allways have a .wbmp version of your site too, so (Nokia) crap phones can read your wap sites. I have a .wbmp export tool for Photoshop and Fireworks (works with Paint Shop Pro too) so you can "Save As..." in .wbmp format, and don't have to use a converter if you want it.
Posted by jcpsad
hey.. thanks for the reply... can you send the color palette and the coverter to my email at john@panelo.com... thanks a lot!!!
additional... is there a script to call a gif or wbmp depending on the phone you are using? if i'm using a 7650 it would be better to view the images in gif (colored) and at the same time if i'm usuing a non-colored phone it would call the wbmp one... thanks again!

Not trying to start an argument on anything, but surely solaris IS a UNIX compliant OS ???
PS. esato is run on apache
Posted by wapchimp
@Aled - you are right - my site is xhtml code but saved as html - it's how I though it should be saved-it makes sense I mean - so both web & wap can view it. Anyone know the mimie type for .amr files??? I don't think it is audio/amr
Posted by j_oates2003
@aled:
Solris is NOT a 'nix system at all, it is a web-server in its own right, used for .jsp, if Tessco don't work on your PC, then it's your PC, why would they make an un-accesable site? It must be your PC.
@Orangeman
the .amr MIME type is:
.amr
audio/AMR
this does work, if you want, I'll put a .amr file on my webserver (IIS) and so you can download it, however, .amr files are very quiet, only really used for MMS, so if you were thinking of using it for a ringtone, you can't, tried it, they are TOO quiet.

Could someone please provide me with some code in XHTML for a drop down menu which is compatible with wap 2.0 browsers? Much appreciated.
