Best place to see the northern lights?

Strange question I must admit, but basically we're thinking of booking a winter break and Mrs. Cyco and I have always wanted to see the northern lights! I'm wondering if anybody here can suggest some nice destinations where we have a good chance of seeing them?

Preferably Europe but may consider Canada, Iceland is too expensive! Skiing / winter sports not essential but would be nice. Must be in or near somewhere with even a little bit of nightlife (bars, restaurants).

Any (sensible!) ideas welcome

Found these two sites, may help a little, i bet Canada would be amazing though.

You wanting to go skiing are you?

Thanks Lau! I'll take at look at those

We're not too bothered about Skiing but it would be nice to have the option.

Canada would be quality but most probably more expensive then Europe, mind you saying that you can go nearly anywhere in the world nowadays without a huge budget. Have a cracking time wherever you decide to go.

Yeah, I've always fancied a trip to Canada. We've thought about the Ice Hotel before and it's currently our firm favorite but we're still open to suggestions, especially cheaper options

yes! Come to sweden see the ice hotel here, and see the northern lights in the same place.

Yup, the Ice Hotel is still the clear favorite at the moment!

£800 each not including spending money for a three-night break though

It's looking like a direct flight to Kiruna at the moment for the ice hotel package but they offer the option of spending a few additional days in Stockholm, which we would like to do.

Also looking at this holiday in Norway:

The ice hotel is really far north, so you can see the northern lights. You can even see it in the images on their site i linked you to.

If I had the money I'd be there with ya mate would be a good place to have our little joint B/Day party!

youve inspired me to look into this too cyco
how amazing would this be

if you find anything cheap/good be sure to post it

Cheapest package tour so far is the Norway holiday at £585 pp

http://www.scantours.co.uk/winter/nlights.shtml

We think we're going to let the credit card take the strain and go for the ice hotel though! You get the option of all the other excursions like dog sled and ice fishing too so we figure it's worth the extra.

Still looking though, I'll let you know if I find anything

The lights just don't look real do they. They'd be fantastic to see. Good look Cyco, I hope you get to see them.

Thanks

I'm just trying to find out if we can book the excursions more cheaply with alternative providers once we're there, rather than pre-booking with the tour operator. It usually works out cheaper that way...
