W910i Firmware/Bug Overview

Posted by bloo
hi there, i was wondering if you guys could help me with my W910 phone otherwise i'm buggered.

XD. anyway. problems. i have many. T-T :'(.

its keeps on randomly switching off and i have to switch it back on.

it doesnt recognise my SIM sometimes and says 'inactive SIM' on the screen (but that may be cos my SIM is like 5 years old, does the age affect it?).

the SensMe function doesnt work even though it did for the first time i used it then it wouldnt open up again even when the tracks had been analysed so the SensMe could be used.

also my java seemed to be f***ed cos Music Mate doesnt work even though it did the first time i used it but now it doesnt; as a matter of fact, java doesnt work at all on my phone T-T.

the games section and the application sections doesnt open up and when i try to it comes up with the message 'operation failed'.

and just now, the downloads feature on the menu does not work as well.

thats seems to be it for now. i've tried nearly everything i could think of. its updated to the latest software (R1EC001080225) and it still has all the problems. flashing has also been tried. twice. the first time it loaded to 99% then the phone shut down so it had to be done again and still no difference.

i would like to hear what solutions you guys can give. i've learnt to live without the functions that dont work cos i've had my W910 for 6 months but it would be VERY nice if i could use all of them, specially the applications.

also, i dont think replacing the phone will be much of an option cos my parents are stingy and this is the only phone i'm having until i go off to uni and also because i bought it off the internet (Amazon) so i cannot return it at the local phone shop.

everything seemed to be working fine first time round then it all just went wrong =S.

-sigh-

sorry about this super long rant. ^^'. i just want my phone fixed.

~ bloo out

p.s. does the fact that its an Orange W910 affect anything? i've read that they are the worst ones. i didnt know til after i got it ^^'. i've tried consulting the Orange shop here but all they said was that my W910 should be replaced, that was the best solution.

so tell me you guys, is the only solution to all of these problems for the phone to be replaced?

i remembered there's news somewhr around okt - nov last year abt orange recalling its W910 because of faulty firmware, maybe yours is one of them.u can chk the manufacture date in the battery compartment. its in the form of 07W58 (example).

Posted by bloo
its 07W43. so is that last years?

would that apply to my phone even though it's been bought off the internet?

I am on R1F for few weeks now and had more than twice as much restarts compared to my old firmware, which I had for couple of months.
Also the music sometimes stops playing for half a second without any apparent reason.
The phone still goes back to the Walkman Theme after using the USB Mass Storage connection, and the theme is sometimes making errors now, which I can't remember from earlier, like when it fades into "Music Mode" the walkman logo remains, and when I stop the Media player it doesn't go back to normal mode !!

Something which bothered me from early on was that both the player itself (vertical and horizontal mode) and the themes do not display full Tag data (Title, Album etc. are cut of in the middle), even if there is enough space left on the screen ( horizontal mode)

Anyone here use a Sandisk 8GB M2 with your W910i? I have the 8GB M2 in my W910i, but VISTA (32-bit) only recognizes 4GBs of storage space when I connect my phone to my computer in "Phone Mode." I have about 5GBs of music in my phone, and when i view the memory stick status using my computer it shows: "0 bytes free space, 0 bytes used, and available memory space is full in red" Is there a way to fix this so VISTA will correctly see the full 8GB?

Here are the facts from testing my w910i and the M2 8GB:

- Even though VISTA only recognize 4GBs of memory space, I can still continue to copy more data if I use SE PC Suite (This method is quite slow)
- My W910i displays the correct 8GB space when I view memory status from the phone
- If I use "Mass-Storage Mode" with my phone connected to computer, VISTA will show the correct 8GB space (this method is very inconvenient to use)
- When I remove the 8GB M2 from my phone and use memory stick reader the memory capacity shows up correctly in VISTA.
- I tried to update the phone drivers using the CD that came with my W910i, but VISTA shows no update and it is already using the best driver.

If anyone has experience or knowledge about how to make the 8GB M2 show up correctly with VISTA in "Phone Mode" please do share. For me, "Phone-Mode" without using SE PC SUITE is the fastest and most convenient way to add music to my phone.

Thanks.
TJC

Sounds like your hard drive is formatted with FAT32, try formatting it with NTFS ...

Cheers

Posted by TJC
Thanks for the response Alexlt. I was going to format my M2 into NTFS, but I read in a few forums suggesting that Memory Sticks should be left in FAT or else the phone may have trouble recognizing the memory.

I have never formatted the 8GB M2 since I got it. I just put it into my phone and everything seems to work fine. I just wanted to ask those of you that are using 8GB M2 on your W910i, how much memory capacity does Windows (My Computers) show when you are in "Phone-Mode"? 8GB or 4GB?

To "Not Me": I am experiencing the same problem in regard to the random music skips. I listen to my walkman for an hour every other day when i go to the gym, and I would randomly get these 1sec sudden pauses as well. I don't know what is causing it, the mp3 is fine in my computer and when i replay the same clip in my phone it doesn't skip. It is completely random, I am on R1EA033.

fat16 has a 4GB partition limit in windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310561

fat32 has a 32GB limit in windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314463

I dont belive NTFS will work on M2 and not in a SE phone (unless you hack it in some way)

Posted by TJC
Hi Defiant: I just checked my M2 using the memory reader and it is indeed in FAT32 format. I suspect the problem resides either with VISTA, Phone's Firmware, or the phone itself.

- Phone in mass-storage mode VISTA reads 8GB
- M2 in Memory Stick Reader VISTA reads 8GB
- W910i Phone Memory Status reads the M2 correctly at 8GB
**Only when Phone is in "Phone-Mode" VISTA reads 4GB

I tried several things to see if i can get it to work, butI guess this may be an issue with the phone's hardware & software.

your problem is with Vista since, purely and simply, Vista is absolute rubbish. i have an 8GB M2 in my W910 but i use XP and therefore have no problems.

do not use NTFS on your M2 or it will be unreadable in your phone. if you want to reformat your M2, i strongly suggest you do it in the phone to avoid any problems.

lastly, in terms of transferring music, there is no quicker way than to use a card reader. the W910 came with one anyway so make use of it. it's MUCH faster, especially when you start transferring multiple GB's!

Posted by TJC
Thanks senninha for sharing your experience, and I am glad to find out it is the notorious VISTA that is acting up in this case. Indeed, if I were to reformat my M2 I will use my phone as it is recommended in almost every M2 forum that I have visited.

I undersetand that in terms of actual transfer speed, using the memory card reader is the fastest way to go. However, when I want to swap in an album or 2 on the go, I find using "Phone-Mode" to be the most convenient and hassle-free method.

Senninha, did you format your 8GB M2 on your phone when you first got it? or you just plugged it in and started using it?

I'm using r1fA on mine no restarts so far, been using the walkman, video and browser/RSS (broadband via BT) all the time.

I've been having probs with my w910i (on o2) crashing recently (mostly when using media features, but not exclusively)

So, ive just updated to the latest software and it seems to be worse! The whole phone seems to have slowed down also...
Anyone got any ideas what may be causing this?

Thanks

Posted by senninha
@TJC

no, i didn't bother reformatting it. i figured i'd just use it straight away and only do a reformat if i encountered any problem. knock on wood, but it's been smooth sailing all the way.

you're right that if it's only transferring an album or two, it is sometimes more of a hassle to whip out the card reader. funny that phone mode is faster for you though, as file transfer mode is usually the faster way. actually, when it's only a small number of files i need to transfer, i usually do it via BT. might be a little slower but extremely convenient, i find.

R1FA035 is out on SEUS.

The only difference is that the video-call camera driver beign updated at 3.2 version.

new firmware didnt fix anything?

Have to wait another 3 years for O2 to approve he new firmware!

Updated mine to R1FA035 as well. So far so good. I was hesitant because R1FA030 has been rock solid without a single restart or any other glitches...

Oh well the update junkie in me won.

I'll report any anomalies or improvements if I see them.

Posted by tyranusaurus
so far so good for me.. no restarts since the R1FA035 update and the alphabet search problem in media player is fixed.. did jbenchmark and performance seems to have improved slightly, but not really noticeable in gaming. but the playlist still hesitates a while before appearing lol.

Hi all.
I recently bought a w910i off eBay, and it's firmware is HONG KONG R1EA030 CDA r11A 1200-5451. However, when i try to update via SEUS it states "No update available", contrary to the posts in this forum. I live in Australia, and am considering using DaVinci to flash my phone to an Australian firmware. However, I am unsure of which one to chose considering that each try costs 17$ AUD :S. So I am asking your opinion of which firmware would be best for me, i have seen a few which look promising however i cannot be sure if they are right for me. If anyone has experience with DaVinci flashing could they please try and help me out; http://davinciteam.co.uk/phone_details_W910i_R1FA035_CID52.html choose one of those firmware?

hi guys. currently i'm using R1FA030 software and these are the problems that still not been solved:

1) the HSDPA menu doesn't comes out anymore in mobile network>gsm/3g netwrok after master-reset.

2)always failed when i try to transfer large files (or videos) using "phone mode" for PC Suite 3.2.

3)does the keypad always blinking when i connects the earphone or usb cables? which is so damn annoying. ahaha.

Hi! I have noticed that when the same flash walpaper is set as a screensaver it plays much faster and smoother than when it is set as a standby background. This is also noticable in standby versus desktop similar flash animations. For instance in preloaded themes hidden peak and soundscape. I wonder if anybody else has noticed this. I'm currently using R1FA035...

Posted by tyranusaurus
yep thats true.. and the flash menu's much much faster now and also when browsing pics in media organiser theres a soft transition between pics now instead of the "jerk" when moving between pics.

I can confirm that generic firmware is now out for SE w910i UK.

Maybe its certain hardware revisions... I had some restarts prior to R1FA030, but not that bad, but since R1FA030/35 I have had zero.

strange.referring to kopstar's post on 1st page, the phone can get around 8000+ on jbenchmark 1 using R1FA030,but now it had been reduced vry much to 6000+ on R1FA035.actually i had done a series of test myself, but i was nt so sure abt my result, seems tht i'm nt alone.anyway i dont notice any lag when browsing thru menus so it doesn't matter much.

Guys, why can't I still update my phone to R1FA030 or 35. I have an unlocked O2 phone but not unbranded. Others seem to have updated on O2 but i'm still stuck on R1EA030.
My CDA is 1201-6331, that would be WESTERN-EUROPE, so why can't I update?

had you update before?
some pc/labtop seem not able to use SEUS(connect w910i pc screen didn't show 'release 'c'')
try update in other pc/labtop

Hi Guys, how is the battery life on R1FA035 compared to R1EA033? I am currently using R1EA033 and I can get about 5 days of battery with mild use of phone, and about 3/4 days listening to walkman 1.5hr per day.

Also, the guys who reported crazy rebooting issues, is it better on R1FA035?

Your feedback would be appreciated.

TJC

@TJC,
battery life is still terrible! roaming on GSM gives me about 2days and 2nights, 48hr with moderate use of walkman and light use of java games mainly texting and little call time.
but im not too sure how that compares with EA033 since i went driectly from branded to FA030.

After few initial random restarts, the FA035 is very steady and handles quite well in media palyer and java games....but if u dont hav any major problems with the EA033, FA035 doesnt really add much i think

Posted by ZeneticX
my battery last around 5 days stand by on R1FA035,2 - 3 days on mild usage.

Posted by Vongola-Sky
my phone has daily routine.. 1 restart per day but every day has different time of restarting >:(

Posted by TJC
Thanks Pete, ZeneticX, and Sky for your feedbacks. Seems like everyone have a little bit of mix results here. I wanted upgrade because I was hoping to enhance the responsiveness of the phone without losing the battery. From reading forums, many recall the R1FA035 to be faster and gives their w910i an instant-on and lagless UI. However, some others report this is achieved at the cost of random reboots, and short battery life.

This is my first phone from SE, and they really have us chained by the neck with their poor firmwares.

Posted by senninha
just for the record, i've had my W910 for about a month now. flashed it to R1FA033 as soon as i got it, then to 035 a few days ago.

i noticed that there is a bit less lag when playing music, but still a ways to go as compared to my W880 which has no lag at all. having said that, i have NEVER had a random reboot with the W910 ever since i got it, and generally average 3 full days of moderate to heavy use, with lots of SMS, web surfing and about an hour a day of music.

so not all W910's are as troublesome as you may think. in fact, i'm very happy with mine

I am glad that your W910i works as it should for you, but some of us who bought earlier versions of this handset are not so fortunate. SE has released 7 firmwares since the release of their w910i, and the problems that users are suffering from are unacceptable. I understand that phones may have minor bugs and need firmware update to fix for them but these firmware updates from SE actually degrades functionality and usabilty of the phone for many of us. If you don't believe me, you can read the 50 pages of all the users who posted their problems in this forum.

I have read every single page of this forum as well as several other w910i forums, and i find it unacceptable to release new firmwares that cripples our phone and waste our time. Quality control should be done before releasing a phone into the market, not after.

don't worry buddy, i believe you. that's precisely why i let a few months pass before i got my W910. not only did i want to avoid the initial production issues that come with a new model, but more importantly, i wanted to wait until SE had made at least some progress on sorting out some of the bugs of the new A200 platform.

it's still imperfect, but i was able to bypass a lot of the major headaches a lot of people have had. just been burned too many times by being an early adopter i guess...

Posted by TJC
In the future, I will be more careful and maybe wait a little longer before I buy new handsets too. Don't want to get burned no more... I really like the concept, style, and design of this w910i, I just don't like fearing from potential problems when new firmwares are released.

May the force be with you. lol.
