W910i Firmware/Bug Overview

Thanks Silver for sharing your experience about the battery life. For those who do not understand why we are complaining about battery life issues in latter firmwares here is a personal example of mine. This is an example of how strong the battery was on my snowboarding trip:

*Firmware: R1CA029, Battery started at 100% fully charged

- Day 1: Left for trip at 4am
- Day 1: Listened to Walkman while snowboarding (7 hours)
- Day 1: Took pictures throughout trip (about 10 shots)
- Day 1: Made/Received short calls on the Mountain, and in the car (Less than 5 minutes, more than 5 calls)
- Day 1: Played games for 40 minutes in the car
- Day 1: Day ends battery at 40%, no charging

- Day 2: Took pictures at tour site (20 shots, used camera on and off 40mins)
- Day 2: Made/Received couple short calls in the car (Less than 5 minutes, more than 5 calls)
- Day 2: End of trip, got home at 10pm with the battery showing 4%remaining

**I went through these two days on a single charge. I know I can't get anywhere near this amount of battery power no matter how efficiently I use my w910i.

I understand people are not happy about the lag, and that was also the primary reason I upgraded to R1EA030 hoping for a solution. I would've never upgraded my firmware If I knew the tradeoff was permanetly lose 1/2 of the battery power capabilities. I just hope SE's next firmware solution is not "Lag free interface and charge your phone every 12 hours."

LOL. lag free but charge more. lets all pray for a new firmware which is greatly well done n solve most of the bug n lag free plus longer batt life for all

Like TJC, I previously had the R1CA029 when i purchased the phone in November last year and has kept it till yesterday. The day before, the phone kept on restarting every 2 minutes or so, even if I left it on standby. So then i decided to update it, despite all those comments about the battery life.

Im now on the R1EA030, and so far I havent experienced any problems at all, infact i must say I'm quite happy i got rid of the stupid laggy R1CA029 and moved on to this firmware.

However for some reason, I'm not experiencing the battery draining bug? Battery life so far seems to be the same as the previous firmwares.

Posted by nitrounit
i never had any issues with the phone (except if i press the wallkman button and shake 20 times the phone may restart,or when charging sometimes i can get a few bugs). but all the walkman not working and cannot acces games menu stuff i never had them, the phone does have bugs and may lag when walkman is playing music minimised but i cant say i have any major issues with my phone before and after update.

my phone is cellcom branded (IL)

i also hope there will be a new firmware released

Well, you will found out soon. When you have use the phone with this firmware..
I shall stay with "R1CA039 " or downgrade to it again with davinci, coz I'm going to travel soon.. Don't real want recharge it after only 2 or 3 days ..

R1CA039 was stable enough for me, no crashes at all, but R1CA029 was not real good at all..

i jz found out battery life is better in R1EA033 compared to R1EA030 and R1EA033 is oso less laggier(IMO).anyway its jz a minor fix over R1EA030 (i guess) since i cant find any change log online.u all can still gv it a try

Thanks Zeneticx for the tip, but for some reason SE Update Service still shows that I am using the latest version firmware R1EA030. I have read many comments on the R1EA033 and some say it's only available for certain regions, while others say that it is only for brand/unbranded w910i's.

I can't find an explanation in regard to why some report good battery performance when using the same R1EA030 firmware. The SEUS customer rep told me that the only difference between firmwares in different regions are the language packs... don't tell me the language pack is eating my battery, I am only using English that is bs.

Congratulations to those that are having great performance on your firmwares. I strongly hope in the next firmware update SE will offer a significant improvement to balance both performance and power issues in our w910i's.

To SilveR: I found a solution to the battery drain issue for our W910i... which is... get a quarter and look for a pay phone! hahah

Yeah I have updated mine to R1EA033 thru SEUS a couple weeks ago, after having R1EA030. The battery indeed seems better, especially with BT enabled all day with moderate stereo bluetooth headset usage for listening to music/talking.

It also seems to freeze less.

Posted by SilveR.
I'm gonna try with mine again via SEUS later, if R1EA033 is there, I'm also still on R1EA030

Mine is also simfree..

But I did notice I did upgraded to the R1EA033 first , there was H icon available via connection 3g/GSM. Because of the battery drains so fast on mine I did retry to update my phone via SEUS, then I got suddenly R1EA030, and there is no "H" icon at all.. but battery still drains fast..

Will to a try later today... Hope there is new firmware available

I must say that i do love how you guys are complaining that your still on EA033. I'm stuck on R1DA038, and t-mobile branding to match. Is there anyone on T-Mobile UK that has managed to update higher, because its seriously not funny.

Posted by 0blivion
Right, I'm feed up of R1da038 (T-Mobile UK) , and am seriously tempted to debrand the phone. However, the issue that i have is that as it is a contract phone, its still under warranty and i can't decide on what to do.
Tried talking to t-mobile but its like talking to a brick wall, and SE are not much better.

What the hell do i do???

Personally I would debrand it, but the firmware for the debranded ain't much better. Stay with what you have. How bad would you say it was to you and what issues are you gettin?

Posted by TJC
I agree with Andrew. If you are not having restart or other serious issues with your firmware then I would just stick with it. If it is only the lag that is bothering you, then i can tell you from my experience after updating to R1EA030 the lag problem is only slightly improved.

From what I read online, the CDA number of your phone determines whether your phone can be updated or not through SE update service. You can view your CDA number by pressing >*<<*<* , Service Info, Software Info, first set of numbers under Customization (looks something like this xxxx-xxxx RxxA).

The following CDA should be able to update to R1EA033 (there may be more CDAs added) :

1201-6114

1200-9135

1201-0176

1201-4315

1201-4321

(Source: http://www.sonybbs.com/viewth[....]23207&extra=page%3D1&frombbs=1 )

If you really need to update your firmware, try and look for local SE service centers to see if they can help you. In the US, there are no local SE service centers so I have to mail my phone to them (process time+shipping time = ~2weeks maybe even more)...sucks.

Hope this helps, and good luck to you Oblivion.

Indeed, mine is 1201-4321 and I updated to R1EA033 thru SEUS. It also says APAC-ANZ in customization. APAC means Asia Pacific I assume. I bought my phone unlocked in Toronto, Canada, and it came with a euro style charger plug.

SEUS just released firmware R1ED003. I'm updating it as I post. I got the Unbranded version of w910i (Hong Kong) Region.

Hope this firmware fixes the restart problems I'm having.

User interface is definitely faster. I didn't notice any new bugs so far. The menu wallpaper is still missing after landscape mode. I'll post more if I experience anything.

Would you please post its complete firmware info?

Posted by andrew.bell
It would have been nice for you to post the firmware information and also a screenshot that the firmware was available. Makes this post worth reading for alittle moment of your time. I hope when I get in from work tonight that there is a firmware upgrade!

However, I am on R1EA033 already.

Just to say my customization is:
1200-6328 R10A
1200-5451 R1EA033

So far, I didn't have enough time to test the battery life. I've experienced 1 restarts so far and that was when I was listening to bluetooth music and using opera mini to browse the web.

This phone is extremely slow when using bluetooth and playing music at the same time. It seems the CPU is at 100% maxed out and the UI will be so slow. This is the only real problem I've experienced with all the firmwares.

For the landscape bug, I am not sure how to reproduce it and I've encountered something similar. When using a theme that has a background in the 3 x 4 menu. Open the camera using the 3 x 4 menu, close the camera using the back button, the background in the 3 x 4 menu will be gone. Quiting and opening the 3 x 4 menu will fix the background.

is the phone speed like R1EA033 or better than that? and do your phone experienced any restart issue? and how is the phone speed when u have music in backgound? worst than R1EA033 or better?

Just to update people there is nothing for de-branded UK generic firmware as of 21:54 GMT -0. The current firmware still is R1EA033.

Posted by Vongola-Sky
haha
jus wanna check for the changes in the new firmware.

Just had the chance to update to R1EA033 this morning, and it seems like there is an improvement in battery after half a day of mild use. I will report back the battery performance once I go through a single battery cycle. HiVolt, I got the same CDA number as yours, hope I get the battery improvement that you were talking about!!

I read in a forum that the R1ED00x series firmware is for brand/CDA specific W910i's. If someone has knowledge of this feel free to fill us in.

To Vongola-Sky: I just saw your other posting about whether your W910i is generic or customized. From your CDA it seems that it is branded. You can check out this webpage for a full list of W910i CDAs and which brand they belong to.

If u hav the hidden peak theme, try setting it and open yr media manager, thn switch to landscape mode.the bckground will chg to a strange colour of purple or jz black.dis problem occur since R1EA030.

well, I received mine from Hkong(white edition) with the firmware R1EA033.
When I added Spanish language by Davinci, I only had the option of R1EA030, free, unlocked.
I'll try to update through SEUS in the near future, before summer.

tnx for the info's..

anyway mine is R1EA033- keeps rebooting and sometimes it freezes for about 10secs when im using it.

Posted by TJC
I am sorry to hear that Diabu. The R1EA033 firmware was finally available for my handset last friday, and I updated it hoping to fix the monstrous battery drain since updating to R1EA030 firmware.

After using the firmware for almost 3 full days (Friday 9am unplugged from charger, sat, sun, mon 2am as I am typing this review), my battery now is only down to 50%! When I was on R1EA030 firmware, the battery would already be dead well before this time. There seems to be a 50% improvement in standby battery performance, and I was using my phone more than usual since it was the weekend.

From my experience, the R1EA033 firmware not only give the W910i better standby battery performance (loses about 5% every 8 hours instead of 10% on R1EA030), but also less power leakage when you are using the phone for general tasks (browsing contacts, organizing songs...etc).

I am glad R1EA033 reduced the battery drain of the phone, but I hope SE's next firmware will be a balanced solution of battery/performance/stability. Thanks to HiVolt for recommending the R1EA033 firmware upgrade, I will report back if there are any performance issues/bugs.

Well i took the leap and De branded my T-mobile handset from DA038. I am now on R1ea033. So far I'm glad i did. However one thing that i have noticed is that on some java games, when i hit the end call key to kill the app, the system hangs and is unresponsive, however the game is still running in the background, anyone else finding this?

0blivion

Posted by diabu
well battery life has improved but reboots are still there- sometimes this phone freezes (unresponsive) for about 5 to 10 seconds..

Posted by Rookwise
Virgin Tech's have just finished installing Broadband in my house now and I've just looked on SEUS and 033 is also available for the 2 white W910's that I have.
Took 20 seconds to download and is nearly finished updating already

Posted by ros-mari
Oblivion,
that happened to me with the original free firmware my white w910 came with 033HK customized.
I'll see to it now.
At first I was afraid it was a faulty w910.
EDited: it hasn't happened so far, I'll keep you informed

Once when I removed my M2 MemoryCard and put it back in, the phone tells me after 5 still that there is no card inserted, wether i want to listen too Playlists in Walkman player or when trying too access it through the filemanager, then had to restart it so that it would finally detect the card.

This only happened once to me though !

Posted by Rookwise
So far i've noticed one thing. If i set a theme which is saved on my memory card (eg.O2's theme) and turn the phone off and back one again.I have to set the theme again as the phone loads up the Walkman theme instead (which is saved in the phones memory) I've also tried moving the theme over to the phone memory but still get the same thing happen.

This message was posted from a W910i

I like the faster Walkman... And I think battery life is longer - but dont know exactly.

I have the *33.

Posted by 0blivion
It seems as though to main optimisation to the media engine that is instantly noticeable is that the halo/flying dots, do not load until the list are buffered considerably. at least it works. On DA038 with just over 2000 songs it was crawling. However now with the optimisation it now running as smooth as a w850i taking the same card. Also the bass levels seemed to have increased considerably.
Shame about my java bug though, It is highly irritating.

I'm Vodafone Ireland and I can't get it. It took nearly 3 months for the 030 firmware to appear, so I'm expecting 033 to appear around July or August sometime...

Posted by l33tgod
Most recent firmware update is still quite slow and laggy. Especially if you have the music player running in the background.

So, basically, the Battery problem is the only thing fixed!
