Many reasons actually
1) If you ever change your phone u dont have to go thru the painful process of transfering ur contacts
2) U can use the offline search feature of OTAM to find a contact over multiple fields(company name, notes etc.) apart from first name and last name
3) U can add contacts from the website http://www.otam.in and look them up from ur phone on the move
4) u can use the free OTAM messaging(not SMS) to communicate with other OTAM users

No you cant send sms to any number. But you can send sms to any other OTAM registered friend free of charge anywhere in the world.
