"While most of us are not getting the latest 5 megapixel camera phone yet, Samsung has announced a 8 megapixel CMOS camera module today."

It's probably going to end up as a ''main'' part of this phone.
Motorola Skarven (upcoming 8 MP phone)

why are there two module sizes of the same 8mp module in that pic

^^ CMOS, mever mind

@razec - I agree, but I am not sure, if they are going to put CCD sensor in their phones ever again, because, now we're talking about 5, 8, 10 MP phones, and that's a real competition for Sony cameras. So I think they're going to stay with CMOS, but improved one that they used in that Japanese model SO905iSC.

Sony should take over the High-end Cybershot department of SE imho. since S700 was born because Sony made it alone without Ericsson's help. I'm Sure with the new SE president, he would think of this as a good move for their camphone competition. and afaik, using CCD sensors in SE phones doesn;t make an alarm for Dedicated Sony Cybershots as the latter still has the edge on the image quality and features(not to mention that it has better lens, more settings, larger sensor and cheaper

Engadget Mobile posted this a few days ago and they also understand the main limitation of CMOS sensors (highlighted part):
You know all those 3 megapixel cameraphones out there? Well, they're about to achieve 8 megapixel ubiquity. Samsung just announced availability of their 8 megapixel CMOS sensor which shares roughly the same 10.5 x 11.5 x 9.4-mm girth of its 3 megapixel cuz. Just make sure you've got plenty of light to frame those shots if you're expecting anything close to a quality image.
Maybe this Samsung sensor is something completely different but comparing current CMOS and CCD sensors used in production models, CCD is three times more sensitive than CMOS, hence the need for good quality noise reduction software in CMOS-based cameras.
