Hey all... noticed these on Ebuyer for £220

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134344

anyone know if they are any good.... obviously not for the gamers etc... but say for a mother who can hardly switch on a pc... was gonna buy a desk top but maybe this woudl be ideal for a starter pc for young peole or incompitant parents?

cyco, whats your view on these?

cheers all

Ooooh yes! This is the grown-ups version of the "$100 laptop", isn't it? To be honest, I'm a bit torn over them. They are great for non-technical users who just want browsing, email and office but I can't help thinking that a 4Gb drive and 7" screen is just a little too limiting.

Personally I'd spend a bit more and get a really low end desktop PC with vista home basic and a 15" screen. You could always stick Linux on it if they keep getting it spammed up.

mate, wheres the $100 versions....

im curious, i too thought about the 7inch screen and 4gig HDD, but to be hoenst, i bult my mum a pc and shes already shafted it!!!!! i get calls everyday... it ont turn off.... the internets stopped working....

im just wondering f thsi would be a nice starter for her - a bit easier to use maybe... she does only want word processing and internets really.....

hmmmm......

Yeah, it's a tricky one. It's just that if they do eventually want to hook their digital camera or mp3 player up to it at any point, they might have problems what with the limited space and Linux os.

Having said that many people have trouble hooking cameras and mp3 players up to winders anyway...

ok, another question, is there scope to hook up external HHD's to these babies....

im considering gettign one as a laptop for browsing in the house...... can surf while on the Sh!tter then

Looking at the specs it has 3 USB ports so yes, there shouldn't be a problem with an external drive

hmmmmm.... very tempted, do you know the specs of the cheaper ones? and where to get them from?

Nah, the '$100 laptop' is the other name for the 'One laptop per child' project which aims to make and distribute basic computers to people in developing countries. The specs are practically the same as these asus machines and they actually cost nearer $180 at the moment.

You can't buy them as such however there is a charity project in the USA which is trying to offer them for sale at $400, the idea being that you actually buy two: One for yourself and the other one is donated to a child in a developing country.

its a good find matey.... although the point of the intial one is (i hope) they cant really mess it up...... being a web one only i figured it would help them get used to it with out the windows side of thigns confusing matters..... i cant stress how rubbish my mum is on a pc... it took me 30mins (no lies) i help her shut it down over the phone the other night.... i still have the bruises on my head

cant you source the os or something...

Blimey! That laptop that Paul found is a cracking deal! Hewlett Packard as well, which is one of my favourite makes. If I wasn't so skint I'd get one myself.

I recall that Dell were toying with the idea of offering Linux as an option on some of their low-end machines but none of the other OEM brands do AFAIK. Still, for that price it's worth getting one and installing Linux yourself.

thats the lappy my bro has and i have just installed Linux onto it and works pretty well.

oooh and the laptops next day delivery
