well well well ...

thats interesting in and of itself. good to see that you have the device back PK, if that is your real name!?

all jokes aside, im not holding my breath for the 2/10 (3GSM) date theres supposed to be an announcement later this week as well. hopefully the hype is justified, and the refurb made sense.

PK i know your not answer questions but would you be able to take pictures while you have THIS version NOW while its in your hands instead of yanking the whole board around making seal94 work so hard. front and back, you dont have to post them, yet or at all but have them just in case christmas passes us by again before we see the phone.

i hope that SE uses that Sony screen the touch one that shows your gestures. or an OLED screen that uses less battery life. who knows, i know what id want:

~3" 16mil 800x480 pxl
GSM 85/9/18/19
HSDPA 7.2
GPS
WiFi b/g/n
AM/FM
x mpxl CCD sensor with xenon without all that nonsense around the appeture like the w960 (wha is that huge circle is HIDEOUS)

superfast OS, and i mean SPECTACULAR speed, and stability.

PK check your inbox.

@PK probably a question on many lips. How much does it actually kick the iphones butt by! :P

This is off topic, but ninja, your specs are so high flown they are out of proportion. Unless you are exceedingly wealthy or foolish with money, Im sure youre overdoing it. There is NOTHING youd do on a mobile phone which would require Wifi n. Especially if you have HSDPA 7.2 and Wifi b. Maybe n will come in someday but for the time being there are more useful things we want: such as a good flash player, a better web browser (like safari), GPS, optical zoom and all the rest of it.

Guys, he's not going to answer any questions about it, so you might as well stop flooding this thread with questions that won't be answered and wishes that won't have any influence now. you'll have to wait. if you respect him, you should stop now and realise that he can't say a word in detail.

Posted by my ninja
hmm, thanks for the advice mizzle but thats like asking a child on christmas to not ask their parents what it is they got, ESPECIALLY if the gift is under the tree ...

tshark optical zoom is nice if it doesnt add bulk to the phone, hsdpa 7.2 is only as fast as DSL and with that i thought that a robust web browsing exprience was implied. i would like to be able to connect to my PS3 as well and utilize several features it has like streaming media from my home network!!! that way i wouldnt NEED 64gb 1.8" ssd (although ... ) and wireless through all iterations so that ill "NEVER" be disconnected ... i want immediate and reliable and QUICK connectivity, with all those radios its a sure fact that it is possible. Of course as most cellphones they never live above the tech curve, but oh man if i was in charge you guys would adore me every year ... and your wallets would curse my name!

and seal94 would have a great job. but if wishes were horses ... still i can hold out hope since PK and MIZZ are playing good cop bad cop on esato right now.

Posted by Tigershark42
Yea, same here, I love seeing so many great features and specs packed into a small phone. But at the same time, it would be a shame to pay for wifi n if youd never take full advantage of it, or have a 10mpx camera when your memory is limited and you cant tell the difference from 5mpx anyway. Specs are fantastic, but there IS a line which must be drawn somewhere between hardware sizes, memory, cost etc. Though feature wise you are absolutely right . Its always nice to dream of things like this. Like a phone which you would never need to charge, a phone which can be louder than your hifi, a phone with a projector you can use to play tv and surf the web on, the list of things we'd want is literally endless. But some things could someday be possible. Projectors are in development and could be coming in the next couple of years, gesture control, transfer jet, PS3 connectivity as you said, the list goes on.
Im glad to hear Opera 9 should be on the P5i. I like the look of SEs four new low end phones, and hopefully P5i will look even better . I would be happy if it had UIQ 3.2 instead of 4, so long as the features are there. PK implies its something special so I dont expect to be dissappointed.

Whatever you wish - you won't get anything out of him.

Posted by gola
hmmm,i wonder how the 'P5i' will stand off against the n95's successor...

Posted by my ninja
mizz i wasnt implying we would recieve info from him, but thats just to say because we wont doesnt mean we cant be curious, and express that in the form of questionshe . had he not told us had it way back when the questions would still remain. the fact that there are answers just intensifies the aspiration to know.

the anticipation, its almost ... palatable.

mizz no disrespect, of course. but you must consider being on the other side of the fence. Saying, HEY YOU CANT KNOW SO STOP LOOKING/ASKING, is mean spirited, and monopolistic or duopolistic. we dont know, but we want to, and will have to wait till sometime in the future to find out.

so sit there on your nice green lawn in the shade sippin' lemonade knowing, while us migrant farmers toil in the soil for a photoshop from seal94

well climb the fence eventually but not if every time we touch it were reminded that the ppl who know despise you for wanting to come over.

Hi there,

Can anyone please elaborate on UIQ 4?
I thought at the moment the newest UIQ version is 3.2 how come people are saying that the P5i will be running UIQ 4?

Thanks.

Posted by laurenke01
It's a new touch (finger)-centric version...a few screens exist earlier in the thread, but no one really knows what the final version will look like.

@PK i dont know if this question deserves to be answered by you but let me ask, have you noticed an "XPERIA" logo on your proto?

check out this pic:

http://sonyericssonblog.wordpress.com/2008/01/24/exclusive-beibei-user-interface-pictures/

It shows the icons the new UIQ version will use.
Honestly, I don't quite like it. I expected a more nicely-drawn icons.
I hope the final version looks much better!

Nah, I don't think it will look like that.
a) either those icons were very preliminary and have since been made to look better
b) a certain number of them may be fakes.

Many don't seem to have that SE feel about them, so I doubt it.

Although, even if they are like that, its not so bad at all. Remember that the screen will be awesome, the UI can still be good despite average/unimpressive logos, some of these may be very very small anyway and obviously there is no showing of any animations which would be used frequently in the UI design. Dont sweat it though, SE won't let us down there.

@razec
UI? Well i think it is the secondary things that to worry, The thing crucial for SE smartphone now is the Hardware.
The nexperia chip in present smartphone is unbelieveable old, should change the processor for their next smartphone

Posted by Mizzle
@Tigershark

This is how it looks at the moment. Trust me.

Posted by Drasko
Yes you a right

The hardware is now much more important! And not only the electronic hardware but also the mechanic one!

I am afraid that this phone, dispute its look good image would be of
full plastic details and very thick.
The UI look today is under the world pressure to be different in
fashion and of course in this moment it very easy to make a mistake in functionality!
So my R&D team we must be patient in the next few month and of course years because this game will never stop! In the meantime we must make a calls and massaging at least!
Enjoy the Pīs please!

tigershark, the UI pic, like mizzle said, its really like beibei menus look right now, at least some part

It just looks too sketchy for me. That already looks like a disappointing start then, and I hope the rest of the UI makes up for the cheap and cartoony looking icons (Well, not all of them, but some could surely be better).

Posted by ares
mind you, some of the icons are from opera mobile 9 widgets...

I agree with tigershark...i also think its going look different when it is resealed mayb not a huge difference but somewhat different

Posted by Mizzle
It will be different, but not much

Posted by moogoo
i don't think the icons look all that bad. I mean really, it's not shown in the screen or in action, so it's difficult to judge.

My question is, the link says its UIQ 3.2. I thought P5 was gonna be UIQ 4? .. maybe the last 159 pages of this thread confused me

Posted by Mizzle
Those icons are not from P5, they're from Beibei. Not the same thing

Posted by moogoo
oops. So why was it posted here!? (?_?) confusing....

Posted by Tigershark42
Could you elaborate on exactly what Beibei is then? It would be good if you could do the same for Maria, for that matter.

Posted by Charlieef
I totaly agre with Tigersnacke, This Icons looks crapy. Like if they were made for a computergame fore children. I never liked P990 icons, and this looks a bit similar to p990, just a bit uglier.

Let's hope P5 icons will be bether. If the p5 got the specifications mentiond here, it's going to be one of the best phones ever. Nokia may come up with somthing more high tech. But they got ugly design and no touchscreens.

Posted by badassmam
Icons are icons, I'm sure you would be able to change them later on. Whether you like them or not is personal preference but you have to admit that they look clean and detailed which suggests that the screen will be good and the UIQ offers more graphics.

@thread starter

Why not post the real code name of this phone? It's Paris.

What do you want to know about it?

This is a sort of off topic question, but I was just wondering: If MP3 players can have hard disks, why cant mobile phones? It would be great if the P5i had 60 odd Gb of memory. When you think of this being common in other devices, it isnt really so much to ask for, but it would make a colossal difference to useability. Then you WOULD be able to have all of your music on your phone, some movies, etc.

There are quite a few handsets with HDDs, but it's a problem because it has loose parts and because they tend to take up much space compared to a flash disk. Flash disks are the future of mobile memory - not hard disks.

Posted by Tigershark42
Noone has CONFIRMED that it will use UIQ4 yet. What i want to know is, will it look like that in Sealover's photoshops (ie the one that was briefly showcased at a press event but has since not been heard of)?

Posted by Mizzle
How many times do I have to say it's got UIQ 4.x before you think of it as confirmed? It's completely different from UIQ 3 - or UIQ 3.2 in Beibei for that matter. This one has different home screens. OK, enough said for now.

Posted by Tigershark42
I agree, also- no moving parts- so its smaller, wont stop working if you drop it, etc. But then, why arent the flash drives as high capacity as they could be?
For example, The K850i M2 slot can take an 8Gb card, but noone has manufactured one of that capacity yet, the max currently available AFAIK is 4Gb. This, to me implies that Sony will release an 8Gb version sooner or later. Still, surely greater capacities can be made- Id guess that a 32Gb version could come out within a years time.

Fine I will rephrase my question: Where do you stand relative to SE as a company:
Do you have a friend/relative in the company
Do you work there yourself?
Are you a very well informed journalist, for example?

This should be answer enough regarding flash medias in general...

K850 can take M2 / microSD cards up to 32 GB, which is also the theoretical maximum capacity.

If I worked at do you think I would tell anyone stuff like this here in public? Doubtfully... Regarding the insiders, yes, but not going to mention any names whatsoever. And yes to the last one as well.

Hmmnn, not exactly. I was referring to M2 specifically, because only they can be used across the whole range of Sony products. But yes, that does look interesting
What is the exact reason for the memory limit for phones accepting memory cards (eg K850 accepts up to 8Gb M2 cards)?

Not today it doesn't: 8Gb straight from the horse's mouth.

I've updated my post regarding your wrong info.

Either way, this is off topic.

A200 supports memory cards up to 32 GB and you should never trust what any mobile manufacturer states on its website regarding to the memory card sizes. They only write what they have tested on the phone and since there are no bigger M2 cards than 8 GB at the moment, they won't state anything higher.

manufacturers always put their selves on a safe way, they know k850 can hold higher than 8gb...

uhh, 64gb ssd has NO moving parts and is 1.8" in size and uses less power than a regualr platter drive ... so tell me again why its not feasible when nanos have flash based drives in them as well as ipod touch if APPLE can do it ... well then i think that speaks to itself and SE should have more pride than that as a company than to let apple (of all companies) out class them in tech ...

_cost_ is the prohibiting factor NOT space and NOT energy.

Posted by drsilverworm
First of all, iPod touch has SIXTEEN gb, not SIXTYFOUR. The reason no one used a 64 gb SSD in a mobile device is because they cost over $1.5k!

When w960 was announced, 8GB flash was cutting edge. I think it is safe to say the next flash-memory based device from SE will be 16GB. However, to be quite honest I'll take a memory card device with just a couple hundred MB over a device with internal flash but no memory card support, like the w960 or N95 8GB. The reason for this is that I'm paying extra for an expensive 8GB memory that will be matched and outpaced by memory sticks very quickly. 8GB M2's are already available, and within just a few months' time so will 16GB.

come on people what could you possibly do with so much space... you'd get tired trying to fill it up!

if it has 8 or even 4gb support, i'm happy.

I really doubt that HDD or some other flash type memory will have vast implementation in future devices because its all matter of sales and economics of existing flash card business. Having high capacity internal memory will mean death of MS, SD and other cards. None of present manufacturers are imho interested in reduction of their card sales.

Posted by doministry
I'd never trust HD only.
It's great to have a card!!
If eventually your device dies/crashes,
you don't loose at least some data!

Posted by Mizzle
Older phones can't display more than 4 GB in "Phone status" menu, but that doesn't mean that if you've got a full 6 GB card, that you can only use 4 GB of the 6 GB. That's what this was all about. Flash disks is the future.

Now, PLEASE quit the off-topic talk about this.

Theres nothing wrong with related discussion while there is no news about the P5i.
