Q. How do you hack the ipod touch and add cool hacks that i have seen, like NES emulator, and custom themes? And where can i get them from?
A. The easiest way to hack in ipod or iphone with the current 1.1.1 software version is to set up your wifi networking on the device, go to jailbreakme.com and let it do its thing. Basically you will see safari crash (silent close), and 3-5 seconds later the device will be sent to the lock screen. Slide to unlock and you will see a new icon in the menu, the Installer app. From here you can get a large range or apps and other mods, like calendar fix, themes, as well as large apps like apache, php, games, and utilities. My suggestion is you install the "Community Sources" first, then the "BSD Subsystem", whick gives you command tools like the standard unix chmod, ls, rm, etc. Then install "Open SSH", so that you can connect to your device through putty or a terminal through ssh to send commands to your device, and connect to your device through secure ftp, with a client like fugu on mac, or filezilla on windows and linux. The theme system that is shown bellow is called "Summerboard", gives you themes as well as a side scrolling page view, but you get the sidescrolling with the standard jailbreakme.com install if you dont need themes. Another cool program is "Stack":
Q. Does the safari browser have the setting to browse the web in 'one column' mode?
A. It does not, but many pages look like one column, for example, tuaw.com, esato forums, and others.
Q. In the hacked version, has anyone made a file browser yet?
A. Yes, there is a mobile finder that works very well, it lets you change permissions, surf the filesystem, and the standard move files, etc. It also lets you preview pictures, edit files and much more.
Q. What apps are available?
A. This is the latest list:

I have all the useful apps, and that gives me 4 pages, including the iphone apps.
Q: Can you arrange the icons on your ipod touch in any order you want?
A. Yes! There is a file called N45AP.plist that is basically an xml file with blocks were you set the apps order. I ordered mine on the first page like the iphone, then a-z of apps on pages 2-4, and a-z of games on page 4.
Q. What video formats does it support? And is there a converter to convert videos into this format?
A. The Ipod Touch and the Iphone both support 3gp, mp4, mov. I usually encode to mov, since the device has support for the h.264 codec for that container. I do my conversions in windows, so i use super.
Q. Does the Touch have Wifi and the same features as the iphone except the phone part ?
A. Everything feature wise is the same, what is missing is the camera, phone functions and bluetooth.
Q. Is there a way to completely avoid using itunes, so thats drag and drop for music and videos and being able to download music and video off the net?
A. Well, some apps have built in players, so you could download an mp3 to the device with secure ftp, and then play it in one of the apps. As far as i know, when you open mp3s in safari it just streams them, that is the same for movies and videos, if they are of an acceptable size and bitrate. I have had some videos that the device has refused to play.
Q. Any Rar and zip file extract apps?
A. Command shell ones are going to be available soon. You open mobile finder, go to the folder you want, and select "Term here". This will open a console to that location. Then you just do "rar INPUT FILE ." and that will extract to that folder.
Q. What about a Torrent app?
A. I have talked to the iphone devs about that, and its on "the list"
Q: what program makes screenshots?
A. From ssh, you type "snap FILENAMEYOUWANT". This will save the screenshot to the home directory (~/), where it is easily accessible by secure ftp
Q. Any native document apps? (word, excel)
A. Not at the moment. There is a text editor, and you do have access to javascript enabled pages, so google spreadsheets works.
Q. Is there an app to record video yet?
A. The ipod has no camera if that is what you mean, or if you ment recording video from the web then no.
Q. I understand jailbreak will invalidate your warranty, is there a way of removing it? Just in case you need to take it into an Apple Store for support or send it back to Apple.
A. Just jailbreaking is easy to fix, you just restore your device to factory settings with itunes. Unlocking on the other hand is not as easy, since you change the core of the iphone, and at the moment there is no good way to relock it without traces. There is an app on the way that can do it, but at the moment its extremely experimental, and unreliable.
Q. Does the itouch have a password protected lock like the iphone does?
A. Yeah, its the same on the ipod touch. There is also a lockbox app for both, to store passwords, if you are interested in that too.

On the iPhone there is an app called dock which puts a little sunburst in the bottom right hand corner. You press it drag it to the middle of the screen and it brings up all of your apps so you can quickly switch to something different. Within that there is a screenshot option.

That is almost correct, but since dock doesnt work all that well in the 1.1.1 software version of the iphone and ipod touch, then it really isnt an option....
With "snap" you can also take screenshots from your pc, monitor iphone and ipod remotely. I did it while my friends were playing with it, and when i showed them their progress, they where totally blown away

How do you install widgets? Is it just a case of getting OpenSSH through installer and accessing the applications folder through an ftp client and dragging and dropping them in there?

Yeah, that is basically it. Just place them in the right folder.
/var/root/Library/Widgets
