Hi All

Just looking for a little bit of advise

Been thinking for a long time now about joining the Royal Navy as a Naval Airman (Aircraft Handler)

I am really in 2 minds about it but think it would be a great move for me

Is there anyone on here that has served in the Navy that can offer some advise? Or even anyone that can offer advise would be helpful

Thanks in advance

Mark

I think only you can make this decision. I know someone I went to school with, and he joined the navy from leaving school, and he is still in there (18 years)

Hi Mark,
I spent 29 years in the Navy and still work for the MOD as a Civil Servant. Although 21 of those years were as a submariner, slightly different from the aviation side, it is still a good life. Pay is good, conditions are certainly better than when I was in.
My daughter's other half is a aircraft handler and loves it. You have to be prepared to spend some time away (he is off to the Middle East for six months) .
Are you married or single? Do you have only yourself to think about? That can make a difference as pressures from home can make a bit of a difference.
Get down to a Careers Office and get them to show you what it is all about. Then, when you have more information, then make your decision.

Hi Doug

Thanks for the info. I am single with no dependants so its just myself that this involves.

I'm gonna head down to there offices tomorrow and have a word with them and find out if I qualify to apply for that position.

But I would love the chance to join. Would be a great experience in life .

Mark,
Don't let them steer you into something you don't want! Sometimes, when they are short in some branches, they try to persuade you to do something else.
Stick with your chosen career choice.

Good luck, PM me if you have any further questions.

Hi all

Looks like I wont be getting into the Navy at all now. Failed my eye test today

I have a very lazy left eye and as a result they arent strong enough to gain me entry. I am soooo gutted. Almost burst out in tears thats how bad I was

Can't a lazy eye be corrected?

Posted by fatevdestiny
Had it since a was a little boy

Went in for a squint in my eye when a was about 4 and it ended up being a lazy eye and has been like this ever since

Think only option is laser surgery

Oh, my cousin had a lazy left eye and they sorted it with some special glasses he used for a month or two.

Posted by fatevdestiny
Never heard of that.

My glasses have to be sent away to be made because the glass has to be thickened. Its murder. Its actually mostly my prescription that has made me fail because it is over there limit. Has to be at most +6 and mine is +7 or something

+7's a lot mahn!

Do they not let you wear contacts or anything?

Posted by fatevdestiny
Ano. A knew it would be my eyesight that would screw it for me. So gutted

I am one of the unfortunate one's that cannot get contacts. I have to wear my glasses at all times (not when I sleep of course)

i used to have a lazy eye when i was younger, its a pretty small op to fix. felt like shit for a day or two afterwards, and looked like a pirate, but my eyes are fine now.

so you dont have to give up on the idea of the navy

Mark,
Sorry to hear that, mate, don't really know what to say. Perhaps it will correct itself in the future. Sorry mate.
