I've been tracking the launch of the 8 GB cards and am really interested to get my hands on one. I have a 7 month old K790i, and am not sure if & how well my phone will work with this card. Any users who have already tried out this combination please update me, and the other public at large. Thanks

thanks stalix, tranced, humphrey and vlad for ur responses.

the latest update on 8 GB cards is that they are selling for 53 pounds in the U.K., though i have no idea of their availablity.

check this store out:

http://www.nextag.co.uk/memor[....]=a4fc0a1c0528-62EA2C4E3106ACEC

and, to continue with the thread, please let me know if someone has actually tested the 8 gb card on his/her K790 or K800

thanks once again

Is the overall speed/performance of K800/K790 affected by the capacity of of the memory card e.g. does it become slower with higher capacity?

Posted by vladn02
tested 4gb worked no problems what so ever, tested 8gb and phone was very very very laggy
opening folders and such was not much success. took way way to long.

dont know if faulty card or phone or what as I only have 1.

Posted by fair.tec
zirkie: vlad's reply should answer your query. Thanks vlad for giving us valuable insight. I think neither your phone nor your card is defective, but the problem lies somewhere in the memory addressing capability of the phone's processor. In fact, this is what had prompted me to put forth this discussion in the first place.

vlad, just let me know if there are any specific lagging or hanging problems with the phone's functionality in general (apart from file manager), and specifically about the media player. Coz I dont think I'll be using the file manager much. Rather plan to fill up the memory with my music collection, and just listen to it on the go.

Further comments from K790/K800 with 8GB users are eagerly awaited......

Posted by thomas93
My N70 does that with a full up 512mb card, i think it's to do with the way phones acsess data :/

Posted by fair.tec
I agree with you, Thomas. Just that N70 is way too old, with a really weak processor as compared to K800. I wouldn't even make any comment about K750's memory handling capacity beyond 2GB.

The point is, the case with K800 is significantly different. It's basically an over-engineered product, with specifications designed to absorb future advancements in technology. A case in point being its screen, which, at 190 pixels/inch beats even the iPod (160 pixels/inch).

So, you can always expect the K800 to perform something no other phone can....

put new firmware on and tried the 8gb card again, still lags, but doesnt hang this time, filemanager as well as music/video player
to open a video took me about 1 min but it opened up and played the file....
I dont know what else to try....

Have you let the phone format the M2 card before using?

Posted by fair.tec
@vladn: which new firmware? something from wotan ?

Posted by damedavid
I've got a new k810i. I took a chance and ordered an 8gb Sandisk card from w2w.com, thanks to fair.tec's post.

I'm assuming a firmware upgrade will fix it, they are designed for mobile phones, after all?

I emailed Sony Ericsson asking for advice, but haven't heard a thing! Should I be worried about fakes? My first Sony Pro Duo card, a few years ago, was a fake from Hong Kong and I don't want to get stung again

Posted by MarsMountain
Ok, so the advice at the moment is to get a 4gb stick and not 8gb? I'm buying very soon for use with my k810i (latest firmware).

Posted by damedavid
Sony Ericsson replied to me today: "With regards to your enquiry, we can only guarantee compatibility with a Memory Stick Micro 4GB M2 card with the Sony Ericsson K810i."

Maybe I should cancel my order for the 8GB card!

Posted by tranced
no, dont do that.

No, please don't - I need to know if it works

Posted by damedavid
Ok, hang tight and I'll let you know The 8gb card is due out around the middle or the end of November, depending who you talk to!

Hey damedavid / Mars Mountain,

Hadnt been online for quite a while, due to Diwali, back here in India. Nice to see someone who has actually ordered the card I guess I myself will go in for a 4 GB upgrade, since I do not really have use for the 'other 4GB'. Was planning to buy it just to boast that I have the biggest card memory......

I was saving up for a new mp3 player, but if the 8 gb card works I'll use the phone instead.

Posted by goosebuffz
right this might seem as a stupid question but is the any chance of this working with w900i (using a adapter)
using the lateset firmware " R5BC004 "

sorry in advance if i have asked this in the forum

I got tired of waiting, got a 4 gb M2 card today. Can't say that I got much lag in the menus whatsoever. Sweet!

Posted by vladn02
you can reformat the 8gb card and give it a bigger allocation size and the 8gb works just fine in the k800i ( tested by me ) i have a 4 gb right now and 8 and both work fine, the 8 gb didnt work that well till i gave it a bigger allocation size and yes it is a little slower if you have the card maxed out. but then again remember its 8 GB of info!!!!!

for most people a 4 GB card should be more than enough and it works flawlessly in the k800i...

....thanks for all that info, buddy. However, I didn't understand one term, and that is the allocation size. Which allocation size are you talking about? And how to change that? I currently have a 64MB M2 and didnt see any options anywhere in the phone for changing the 'allocation size'. Your help in this regard will be highly welcome. Thanks.

I've got a k800i. just got a SanDisk 8gb Memory Stick Micro M2.

Inserted the card and went to Phone Status. Card memory shows something like 3492 MB. That does not equal 8 GB.

Connected the phone to the pc in File Transfer Mode. It's mounted as H:

Tried formating the card under DOS to use 32 allocation units:

format h: /a:32K

Same reading under Phone Status.

Tried formating the card under DOS to use 64k allocation units:

format h: /a:64K

WARNING! The cluster size for this volume, 64K bytes, may cause
application compatibility problems, particularly with setup applications.
The volume must be less than 2048 MB in size to change this if the
default cluster size is being used.
Proceed with Format using a 64K cluster (Y/N)? n

Decided not to do that.

Tried /a:16K

no luck.

Anyone gotten their card to show up at 8gb in Phone Status?

I also have the 8gb M2 card, but use it on a W800. I also had the same problem. I started a small topic on this.

This is what I wrote down.

"I just got my 8gb m2 card, and when I inserted it with the adapter, it says 3574mb(3.5gb) memory remaining after I formatted it in the phone. When I connect my phone to my computer, the USB mass storage says there are 7.5gb remaining, which is to be expected. Not a big problem because it still works with the phone, but I believe that the w800 can only display up to 4gb in phone status, even though it can accept a memory card higher than that."

"Good news. The 8gb m2 works flawlessly with my w800. Ive filled the card to its capacity. Its just that when you check memory status of the card, the phone reads it in 2 halves.

For example, each half is 4gb. Lets say you only fill up 1gb, the card will display 3gb left in memory status. It is showing how much memory is remaining in the first half. If you use up 5gb, the phone will also display 3gb remaining, but it is displaying the second half of the memory, since the first one has been used up."

It's a lot to read, but try it for yourself.

Kevina:

Thanks for the info. That is good news. I will fill up the card and see if my phone behaves as like yours.

Guess I'll reformat using 32K allocation units first, as I have read that that speeds up reading.

I got my 8GB M2 card today!! Felt like I was waiting forever.

I was a bit worried when I saw the phone showing the card as "4095MB free", (not formatted), but your posts have cleared that up.

I haven't tried filling it up, but I'll do it according to earlier posts. Thanks again.

had a sandisk 8gb in the k800i for ages now, works fine.

only minor thing is under phone status it only goes up to 4095mb under the 'memory stick free'. so if you have say 7gb free it will still say 4095mb. who cares though. it says correct free space in filemanager.

I've been using the 8GB m2 card for nearly 2 months now, no problems. I was concerned it might be a bit "slow", but apart from taking a minute or two you boot up the phone, the k810i works as normal.
Very happy

THERE IS A KNOW BUG WITH FAT32 (>4GB) AND MEMORYSTICKS IN WINDOWS XP-SP2

THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS WITH 8GB M2 IS TO FORMAT IT UNDER WINDOWS VISTA, AND ALSO USE WINDOWS VISTA TO COPY FILES..

NOT USE WINDOWS XP UNTIL SP3 IS RELEASED.

I just purchased an sandisk 8 gig M2 for my K800i, and after formatting it on the phone was able to get it to read it had the full 8 gig worth of storage, HOWEVER once I started copying across my music collection, I only managed to get 4 gig on before it would take no more?

I was basically copying the MP3's across straight onto the memory card on my mac and as soon as it hit '4 gig of free space' it just wouldn't take any more??

Does anyone have any idea's on how to get it to take the full 8 gig???

My k800i can't read 8GB on my SanDisk M2 8GB card, I have tried:

- Format on K800i, result is 3.5GB available.
- Format in Win XP, maximum partition is 3.5GB, formatting as FAT32, result is 3.5GB drive.
- Format using DOS prompt, will only format with options FAT32 and 32K allocation units, result is 3.5GB drive.
- Format in Mac OS X Leopard, maximum partition is 3.5GB, although in Finder it says drive is 7.5GB, but I can only copy 3.5GB worth of data, then it gives a write error.
- Using WinHex software in Win XP to examine the drive it says it's 3.5GB and there is no indication of any extra space.

My K800i firmware is R1CB001 and on update it says that is the latest, but I see from various sites that it's not - does that mean I need to de-brand it and update again? Will that help read an 8GB card?

Anyone got any other ideas? Will formatting using Vista help?

Posted by zirkie101
Yep. Ur fw is ancient. Update to latest!

Posted by dr.indiflid
OK, looks like I missed an obvious approach.... I can use the 8gb capacity when I connect using the usb cable to the K800i. But this is slow to transfer data.

When using a USB multicard reader to read the M2 card with a PC or Mac, I only get 4GB.

Anybody know why this is?

Posted by harjeevd
i got a k800i around 2 mounths ago the phone works fine with both 4 and 8gb cards i didnt find much diffrance in time taken to read the memory card about 2-3 seconds battary life seems the same, last around 2 to 2 and half days depending on useage

Posted by strizlow800
K800s may have problem with free memory indicator... I have seen cases where it shows only 6gb, but uses all 8 so nothing to worry about.
