its not old news if he's confirming that it is COMING and not just a rumor ...

look forward to finding out more specs

Oh yes it is

Is it the last UIQ phone from SE or did they change the OS?

Posted by doministry
Oh c'mon!
If SE states UiQ death themselves,
it's obvious it's not UiQ!

Well Hicaru is interesting with these aspects:

* One feature has been copied from N96
* One feature that has been accused of missing from Walkman for a long time now
* Screen size has been changed in positive aspects

What is the fuzz with Hicaru being an UIQ device? I dont get that.

Woah - I almost said 3.5mm jack, but that's impossible. j/k
N96 copycat - hope it's not the useless DVB-H thingy.
Screen size: Well, anything smaller than 2.8" would be a disappointment.

S60 then. Fine.

Posted by Legen
"..copied from N96" probably means two way slider mechanism. feature everyone ever complained that was missing from walkman handsets is the 3,5mm jack.
is it just me or is this starting to sound like xperia x-next?

If its an SE version of the INNOV8 then its mine. Sounds good!
So is that before or after you visit, Santa?

Now you are talking good Santa! That part regarding the GUI is the most important. I hope they are using ex-uiq staff to do it.

Nevertheless if SE keeps not supporting their smartphones after relese and ignoring users this has FAIL wrote all over. They should learn with what samsung is doing with their new inovate site for devs and general users.

...or have a semi-official open platform like HTC. Almost all older WM 6 devices can be upgraded to WM 6.1 and possibly to WM 7 later on when it becomes available. This compared to no possibility of any upgrades or even fixes from SE is a serious concern when deciding between X1 & Touch Pro - even if we disregard Touch Pro's slightly better specs.

it is. Wrath of the Lich King.

Japanese W64S to be announced by Au by KDDI on October 27

It is expected to be dual GSM/CDMA. Don't count on it to be usable internationally though. At least I don't think... But I do hope =)

Posted by moogoo
that'd be cool if it's GSM capable and can be unlocked to work internationally...

I wouldn't mind getting one of those babies..

Symbian Smartphone Show is too far.

It gonna happen before

I did mean:
SE on this 2008 SShow "introduced" S60 compatibile devices on the 2nd half of 2009.
That means if UIQ's dead, it will be S60 device, late 2009.

I don't understand why news on Hicaru is leaking onto the internet again.

I thought it was established that it no longer existed.

The name persisted for a changing project. They have to release some smartphones.

They will release smartphones in 2009. Hikaru was in status quo for some time and apparently now is making some progress.

With status quo, I mean that for some time there was a discussion in what this device will end up.

Now they seems that they have decided

Brilliant!

The specs we have listed put it right up there at the high-end although that was a while ago now. Hopefully there have been some improvements since then.

Posted by ares
also, if they will remain launching only ultra-expensive smartphones like the x1, that will also make them fail (again)

one of the last good things made with UIQ was the g700/g900 line...not so expensive smartphones are needed, if not Nokia will trounce them (again), with products like the 5800

if hikaru's s60 then i'm fine with it. i just hope its not windows mobile.

Of course, it just rumour mate, you understand?

Posted by S4k1s
At least add some text to the picture in your post stating it is a PS.

Posted by laurenke01
Sounds to me like Hikaru is going to be an X-series, which makes sense in a large way. Especially with the rumored specs. Sounds like a natural companion to the X1.

Using S60 is a great move, if true. I think SE will be able to use the S60 platform but skin the GUI to make it look like what UIQ 4 was going to be. I think that would be a great middle ground considering SE isn't actually going to use UIQ anymore.

I'm looking forward to the next few months, but with baited breath.

The one thing that bothers me...only 8GB? I would have preferred 16. But 8 is still more than enough for my needs, I suppose.

Sounds like SE really did make the right move by canceling Paris et al. Now they'll be able to finally use a modern platform. I hope whatever is released is a quality product.

Well it was said to be 8gig internal and also have support for external memory so let's see what happens.

Posted by laurenke01
This is true, of course. I would have just hoped that with 16 being the new 8, so to speak, SE would have chosen the latter. But there's likely quite a bit of time for changes--it's not like SE hasn't changed things before.

If you like Walkman then Hicaru should be top of your list

It will have the same impact like T68 > T610 > K750 had on the market. That is my guess

Posted by bodeh6
Thats if it makes it to market. I just hope SE doesn't deal Hikaru the same card as Paris and Beibei.

Do ypu know when it is going to be available?

Posted by moogoo
wow.. same impact as T68 and K750? that's a tall order...

i certainly hope you're right..., though it does sound like Hikaru will be the phone for me. I look forward to finding out more specs though and hopefully it will be announced and released soon before it's old news and nobody cares...

Hope it will keep UIQ UI quality, things like Nokia 5800 are awful.
Also hoping it WILL support memory cards.

add better than ARM9 208MHz CPU - good keyboard (preferably qwerty) and some serious video recording like VGA or above in 30fps......

oh and a... lens cover for the cam!!

Statements like this are a little unnerving for me. On one hand, I get excited, because I love cell phones and I love SE and I want them to make a great product.. On the other hand, it's been a year next month that rumors of Paris began in full swing. And these latest Hikaru rumors are starting to sound EXACTLY like those did. And we all know how Paris turned out. I just....I can't buy into the hype anymore. I don't doubt that if it's real, Hikaru will be a great phone...but will it really be the be-all-end-all phone? The "slayer of the competition"--words used to describe Paris?

And even if it is a great phone--with an 8 MP cam, touchscreen, internal memory, GPS, etc--it's not like it will be the only phone on the market to boast those specs. I'm guess what I'm saying is that I'm very reserved about all of this. I want to be excited, but I can't bring myself to feel that emotion about a rumored SE product until they actually prove themselves once more.

If you know everything before the announcement, there will be no surprise.

Wait little bit.

Btw, UIQ from SE is dead. They announce that by themselfs, so...

Thanks.

What would be interesting for me (and many others) would be if the JavaOne phone (whatever form it happens to be in now) and Hikaru are actually one in the same. The JavaOne phone seemed quite obviously to be an Xperia phone of some sort and was even rumored to be an early X1 prototype. Now Hikaru is being billed as a great media phone, being a great Walkman alternative and possibly featuring a 3.5mm jack, an Xperia exclusive? Not to mention seemingly equal emphasis on media, camera, and business functions--a main feature of X phones.

Also, due to the precedent set by the X1, it would seem likely that they would prefer the side-slide in the X1 to the vertical-slide in Paris. Thusly, I would contend that the Hikaru, whatever it ends up being, will bear some vague resemblance to the JavaOne device, and may be the same thing.

Bottom line, regardless what Hikaru is or when it's released, it is going to go head-to-head against Nokia's Nseries touch device as my next phone. So, may the best device win.
