It's too late for 2008 so he means 2009.

2009

Wasn't there supposed to be an announcement from SE this week based on the info received earlier? It was said on the 21st and/or 22nd.

Posted by goldenface
I've been told there is more stuff to come soon - from another announcement. Everyone is ever so tight-lipped about it.

Posted by Dups!
Thanks goldenface!

I hope the secrecy means mind blowing devices. I for one am looking to see that "java one" touchscreen phone. Maybe, just maybe we can get to see a surprise phone (smartphone that is).

Why did they cancel this beauty? Why?

They could've improved the specs that's all.

I think it's should be good time now to beginn new rumor about 2009

I think, it's too early. November is good time.

Posted by ramintop
almost all phones are released, only the c905 is coming soon, when is the next announcement?

Posted by Tigershark42
Y'know, the thought just occured to me, that as far as I can recall, there has never been a cyber-shot phone with a 2.6" screen. They've really got to do something to increase the standard size of screens now, have some that are WQVGA or something... Far be it for me to question how music phones can have larger screens than imaging phones...

Posted by iqtidar
This is old info.
SEMC have done some prototyping of UIQ on OMAP3, there is still a prototyping programme in Android, etc etc.
This info does not accurately reflect actual devices in the portfolio for 2009.
I can confirm S60 device, full touch, high end spec. I think someone leaked some more details previously about imaging etc.

this is what eomer from mobile-review has got to say regarding what santa claus said.

Samsung and nokia are releasing phones with AMOLED screens. SE should also have one given the mere fact that Sony are the one of the innovators of OLED technology. their TFT displays are already amazing, but OLED technology is really promising.

^^maybe sometime SE might release a 2.6" AMOLED Cybershot phone what do you think

Update
opsss my mistake...you type innovator haha...but anyway I keep the text below just incase anyone like to discuss about OLED

FACT...KODAK is the inventor for OLED not Sony.
Sony only make it HUGE because of its OLED TV....

try google it by OLED inventor and Kodak,

http://findarticles.com/p/art[....]EIN/is_2002_May_22/ai_86163708

some articles about OLED>

I am not pretty sure about AMOLED but I remember it kinda drain power more compare normal TFT...but I know the industry is moving in such pace that this concern might have been over come... but OLED or AMOLED biggest advantage is slimmer product since the LED admit lights without any light guide ... but for now....we pay the price for getting it....but whether it can slim down a phone is unknown because camera module thickness is always there.

So you claim these UIQ rumours has nothing to do with reality?

Posted by goldenface
SE already has an OLED screened device out, announced just over a year ago - the W54S.

Unfortunately it was again, only for the Japanese market.

link.

not a high end one

Posted by goldenface
I do have some information regarding another upcoming but of course I'd be horsewhipped if I leaked.

Although, I am getting conflicting information from different sources regarding tomorrow's Smartphone show.

There is an announcement - which could be for the US only - early November, but that could be regarding the X1 and the US.

Many sources are saying there is great stuff on the way but alas no-one is saying exactly what and when - just 'soon'.

Now this is good news
By the way, 2009 is year of Walkman phones.

thanks

I guess SE thinks it on to something with the W350i. Lots of people have them where I am although its a little basic for me. Glad to see a return of the flip form-factor though.

SE today at the smartphone show declared UIQ dead...so...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well if SE announced that today, then explain this:

If they've got something to show at the show, then how can they be dead?

Posted by idumbakumar
That means rumors are wrong.??
we have only blind info on rumors. but earlier we had some proofs conforming rumors by means of official notes or some proto etc. these days we only get sort of sentences.

What do you mean by "they declared"?
What did they say?

So Twiggy is basically a W890i with a flip.... yawn....

Posted by ares
This

UIQ declared dead by Sony Ericsson's Patrick Olson. Or rather it didn't make it. Another oxbow lake in the mobile industry story. Sad.

Yes. W595 is also basically a W890i, just in another form-factor.

Posted by patr!ck
boring! ....

When will we see brandnew stuff?

Posted by moogoo
indeed it is sad if UIQ from SE is dead. I look forward to what SE will come up with to enhance user experience with whatever platform they select for their next high-end non-WM smartphone.

I will wait for it...

Posted by Angello
S60 will be much better than UIQ
cheers

Posted by gola
What do you guys want from Twiggy, I mean the name says it all. If it had a 5mp camera then it wouldn't be a low end phone, maybe not in 2yrs time or something.

Posted by goldenface
Is the codename really called Twiggy? Where does this new naming scheme come from then?

Old skinny models?

Really? I think I will skip it, it will be pure Nokia it seems...

Posted by goldenface
I think we're going to have to wait and see what kind of UI the new S60 brings.

UIQ looked quite promising, especially judging by the showroom animations on the UiQ site, although I understand thats all they were - animations. The UI on the Nokia's Tube looked awful, hopefully thats not what we have to look forward to.

Posted by doministry
Exactly, Tube looks just awful.

Posted by ares
UIQ COULD have been much better than s60, with the necessary commitment from its shareholders...it was the most elegant Symbian GUI

However, right now its over, sadly, in terms of new phones from SE.

However it still has lots of activity on its user community, and the AWESOME opera 9.5 just gave some more life. Some other devs too...gdesk keeps evolving, and even yesterday a kick ass messaging viewer was launched. So, i think iīll keep my p1 for a long time still.

Posted by doministry
ares
Hmmmm....
Well, Opera Mobile 9.5 is not AWESOME yet IMO, I mean it has some lacks and problems.
As you say UIQ was the best UI... Anyway, my feel is that SE will not be SO comitted to Symbian anymore since they strongly connected with WM, and Symbian is basically Nokia's ownership....
I mean, SE will exit Symbian bandwagon and than come back?
Probably, but I'm not sure they'll be a leader in any way......
It's about a year to wait for that.
As for UIQ live today, honestly, apps like GDesk do not give any extra usability besides another - nice - UI layer. It's just eye-candy.
In fact we don't even have HSDPA and I'm afraid flash support will be limited till the end.
Sadly 208mHz processor is not a killer and UIQ3.0 is not that strong either(Symbian 9.1....)
I was hoping till the end but damn.... This is corporations!
I'm quite frustrated.... Probably WM as for me.
I'm curious what SE will do with that...

Posted by ares
i think Opera its awesome compared with the competition...even now...it handles ajax based sites superbly, the scrolling is amazing, etc...and its only a beta

regarding gdesk...i think you are dead wrong...just use artseaīs diamond gdesk theme, and you will see...its far more than eye candy, its USEFULL

back to UIQ situation...

See my posts on MySymbian and Opera...
Well, if it's superior to competition, so the level of this development is generally.....low...
I'm a little bit disappointed. It took like 4 years for them to make an incomplete work... It MAY be amazing. Yet 8.65 works better IMO....Especially in mobile view.

Posted by ares
8.65 works better...SAY WHAT???

sorry...we canīt agree on that...if you told me that opera mini is better for some stuff, i agree...regarding opera 8.65, i completely ditched it...looks like crap besides 9.5

anyway, this is OT

Maybe on the first look it's fine. But I'm talking about reliability, and you can't tell me that the app which takes 30MB of RAM and is slow as hell with any txt input is better, it just lacks. If it will be polished, can be awesome.
But it's yet to be realised.

Talking about the possibility of a new UIQ phone, how about a final decent firmware for the current UIQ3 devices? Something that would add a "find" function to contacts?
I really have a hard time believing that SE would come out with a new UIQ device when they can't even fix their current lineup.
