I think its a good thing that P series is scrapped. Well, to be more exact, it has become the X (Xperia) series. Think about it. P stood for PDA, so the Xperia line is taking off exactly where the P series stopped. Just that X series is far more up to date and refreshing, and can be marketed better. Also: No WM7 until Q4!???? Man...WTF?? That is a long way away, might buy a G900 or something in the meantime then. I am of course going on the assumption that whatever sources you have (assuming any of this is even true) is accurate (but it's never that accurate, when you're talking a year in advance...).

I thought UIQ was already dead? do you mean the leaked info on the s60 touchscreen business phone alongside kokura?

Posted by sigea

Maybe they can make the Hicaru a mass market smartphone like the G900 , and let the xperia be the classy one.

Either way was really looking forward to the next in line to the P1i

UIQ dead??? They are investing lot of resources to make it happen. It will be very very eye candy one

S60 from SE??? I don't think so.

Can you atleast promise that this isn't going "LOL" instead of "wow", like Paris did?

hot dog! i cant wait for SE to outshine the world!

cant f**kin' wait!

I hope the "WOW" have 3.5 mm built-in jack and has all the goodness of Cybershot, Walkman and P-series.

Posted by TJMonkey15
I would LOVE an phone with the UIQ prototype interface shown on uiq.com. That UI mixed with good specs would be a winner in my book.

Santa Claus, If i be a good boy, can i get the w900i like form like phone please?

Too excited to hear that swivel's still alive. If that comes as the sucessor of w900i, with louder volume , bigger screen and a smart phone..It would be soooooooooo coooool!

K enough of this hype train .

I guess that would be the "LOL"- factor, doubt that's happening anytime soon...Let's just accept and move on.

no 3.5mm Jack for SE even in 2009

The qualcomm QSD8250 CPU you mentioned that one of the xperias will be using will run WM7. if it's true that'll be truly amazing. 1Ghz on a mobile!

Fantastic news and great to see the focus shift back to top end devices. Great stuff!

If the UIQ is really going to be killed off I guess their next over-the-range OS would be based on Symbian Foundation (remember that SE also signed on the papers for SF although they haven't really made phones that put it into effect).

I thought SE was gonna concentrate more on low to midrange phones cause they are losing lots of money lol

Is that for sure? If yes, then why can't SE put the 3.5mm jack in. They didn't seem to have problem fitting a 12mpx camera module in one of their unnannouced phones (if kokura really exists!) and 3.5mm jack should not take space as much as the cam module.
If that's the case, then i'll go for the Nokia Touch communicator phone.

What to expect in 2009

1. UIQ X labeled touch screen; 8MP; H2 2009
2. W900 like form factor; 8MP or more; H2 2009
3. Xperia X?; Google Android; 5MP; Q3 2009
4. Xperia X?; WinMob 7; Q4 2009
5. W9XX, Walkman 4; Q2 2009

According to my info next Xperia will have 5mp. However, that touchscreen UIQX labeled smartphone is very interesting. Also Walkman 4 is coming very soon. In addition, I am glad that W900 form factor will come back. And yes, there will be no P series anymore, acording to my sources. Xperia will represent SE smartphone line: UIQ,WinMob,Android. Maybe there will be 3 or 4 Xperia’s released 2009. I know for sure about 2 of them.

Hikaru project is in status quo. Although they have tasted on TI, and Qualcomm processors but it is not sure if the new UIQ mobile will be Hicaru. Next UIQ is in testing phase and it is showing very good results. Even the interface is very responsive and eye candy they are struggling to put something innovative. Fingerprint lock is not big deal and time will show how effective will be if they agree to implement it. The Xperia device that is testing the new WinMob 7 is running on Qualcomm QSD8250 processor. UIQX device is running on TI OMAP3430. Android testing device has the same processor as G1, well for now.

It is very interesting to see all touchscreen walkman coming. But don't expect it too soon.

Is this supposedly to be good news? I am not sure about it. For once the schedule release is too far ahead, and by the time they become available, they risk become yesterday news.

Why is it so difficult for SE to utilize its current resources better? For example why not take their top Xperia, fit it with 8-12mp cam with slider lens, xenon+led, GPS and make it available for various diff OS namely AXXX, Android and S60 and WM? It satisfy wider audiences by differentiation on the packaging and cosmetics. This method is faster and cheaper for SE rather than to keep re-inventing into something people dont really appreciate

The fastport on my w910 is annoying the hell out of me, as when listening music sometimes one stereo channel is interrupted, so that I only have music in one ear, and I have to fiddle around with the fastport until I can listen to full stereo again.

ps: just been wondering how many currently released SE non-smartphones have 2.4 inch screen like w910 ?

The C905 and the G705 (and the W705) are the next oens to have one.

I have a similar problem with my fast port. The connector seems to have worn overtime and won't properly seat. It "pops" out just enough to separate the leads, which causes a disruption in the signal being sent to the headphones. It's quite annoying and happens all the time! Though I don't recall it happening in the beginning. I guess the fastport is very much susceptible to wear and tear, unlike a 3.5mm jack.

I would say that's its main disadvantage. The sad thing is, all of my official sony ericsson products with fastport connects will not seat properly and "pop" out more often than not. But, the generic charger I bought at the AT&T store snaps in (there's actually a "snap" sound when connecting) and stays in perfectly... why can't SE do the same design for their official products?!

I posted this because I am sick of hearing that SE sucks, SE are idiots, SE ….. I personally think that 2009 will be great year for SE. Also, I wrote what to expect not what will be released. Remember Paris, BeiBei… Something that is scheduled for Q2 can become Q4 and vice versa. Many factors come into play. Stability, market, economy, competition… And yes, this could be yesterday news but it gives you at least some picture what might happen. WinMob 7 is tested on such a powerful processor because the OS is resource demanding and is not optimized yet. That does not mean that it will be released on that processor. Maybe there will be new processor on the market by that time…. And don’t forget that in the testing phase, the OS is tasted on various hardware platforms. Also maybe some other company, let say HTC, might release new WinMob OS before SE. Nobody knows that. Q4 is relative and is far away from now so anything can happen. No 3.5mm jack beside on Xperia’s devices as far as I know. I am still looking more info on W900 like form factor. It really makes me happy since I know so many ppl that worships that model. I really hope that we see that in 2009.

I catched the most intriguing the part about UIQ.
So they still work on it, plan a new edition and didn't abandon it yet?

Hikaru??? ... alive???
that would be cool if true.

Posted by razec
I doubt the UIQ device will see the daylight next year. rumors says that SE is already working on SF-based phones. and besides theres no reason to continue developing a functionally-different platform when SF is going to use S60 as baseline platform.

Posted by Santa_Claus
As far as I know it is alive.

There is Symbian smartphone show comming so it gonna be intresting to see what they will present there.

When: Wednesday 22 of October

Designing Touch-based User Interfaces for Mobile Applications
User expectations – how to identify and meet them
The technology behind touch user interfaces – limitations and opportunities
A touch of the future – what is next?

Paris really is beautiful. I'd still buy it right away if it came out. It's closer to what I need than anything else offered by SE. Like an N85 with a touchscreen and QWERTY (well, sorta >D). Think about it, people go on and on about how great the overpriced X1 is- and indeed it is great- but its the sort of device which will complicate your life rather than simplify it (thank you WM 6.1, you powerful yet obnoxious beast). That is where Paris struck the perfect balance between extra functionality and what is actually needed. I suppose there is no point in having Paris now that G900 is out, but the QWERTY, Lens cover and the design would have been most welcome IMO.

These photos of Paris, are from the auction with it on Polish auction service. I bought it

PS. I will make a review of it , i promise (maybe comparison with Beibei? )

Mate, you're a lucky guy =)

It would be happy, if you can compare Paris (maybe) with the G900 and Beibei.

That new Samsung Propel (from AT&T) looks a suspicious lot like Paris...

Posted by xell
It looks more like i620 or i640.

Both were official way before the Paris pics.

The device yes but the UIQ-Design is terrible (IMO).
Today it has to be more stylish just like the UIQ-touch-Concept.
btw i hope hikaru/hecaro/whatever is thinner than paris

Posted by goldenface
I agree.

A good touch display is whats needed right now and I think UIQ should be up to providing this.
