Why r u all crazy about android?? U know that programs written for it r JAVA which is SLOW and needs more CPU power and RAM compared to native code. AFAIK in the Android SDK, programs are not compiled AOT.

And we know Google is about ADVERTISEMENT which is just another word for BLOATWARE so expect a lot of POP-UPS!

If you think WM is bloated, then see it in full force with Android!

looking at the demo...

it looks to be pretty fast and responsive. of course quality of the video isn't great and i can't really tell if he's really showing off any applications.

but looks good.

Ah, HA! The W705 if I'm not mistaken.

Is this the 4GB, WiFi, GPS slider?

Posted by Car Lazar
Nice metal w880/w890 finish ...
Nice ...
I like that

Posted by goldenface
Yeah, the brushed metal finish is very nice.

Thanks Mizzle.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah, it looks like this one should look nicer than the G705 which I'm personally not at all attracted to.

Posted by goldenface
This is to be on the shelves before the end of the year by all accounts so by my reckoning it should be announced in the coming weeks.

Posted by ayejatt
so the only difference in the G705 and W705 would be the 4GB??

My guess would be that it will also have whatever it is that makes the W902 and W980 keep getting praised for their music playing abilities too. That Clear Audio thing or whatever they're calling it.

Looking Sexy!

Posted by ramintop
well the keypad or whatever keys down there is what worries me, they dont seem to get it right these days, the back will look sexy im sure.

Posted by idumbakumar

OMG man, that's light sensor.

Posted by apolloa
If that's a light sensor, would that not mean it's a smart phone? Are there any non smart phones with light sensors to adjust screen brightness?

Take note Android's special dalvik JVM is specialized in performance handling. hence less CPU intensive than the standard J2ME JVM when compiling java bytecode. of course we cannot compare programs using managed code with the programs written in native code when it comes to execution speed. but it doesn't mean the managed codes can't run fast. I do remember that there were alot of .net applications (which are managed code as well) written for WM OS running fast on WM phones. i assume the same thing with this android's new JVM. besides the good thing about managed code is is't security and stability, less chances of memory leaking unlike programs in native code.

I can't see any light sensors on any of those phones, only front camera's? Can you confirm that?

@razec

.NET applications are compiled Ahead of Time (AOT) which in effect turns it into Native executable. I think Androids Dalvik relies on JIT or worse is Interpreter.
What's unfair is that Android is capable of running native apps but prevents developers from doing so. What a wasted power. IMO that is worse than the limits set by Symbian or Apple SDKs.

Well i thought it is a P-successor at first but then i saw the walkman-logo.
I think this will be a Highend-Slider-Walkman.
W902 - candybar
W905? - Slider
W980 - clamshell

Posted by moogoo
despite android's technical drawbacks, the demo clearly shows that it is very responsive and fast. would like to see it run 3rd party software though...

the phone is definitely walkman version of G705.

here's hoping for more announcements before the end of october with releases in time for xmas

Posted by Zuckabaecka
the problem is that i want a new phone yet
but i think i'll wait to see this W705/905 and it's specs.
BTW a W902 in white would be nice

AFAIK all built-in apps in Android are native including drivers that's why it's fast. But 3rd party apps must be interpreted on virtual machine.

Posted by Zuckabaecka
I think a Android-phone from SE isn't that unrealistic as some guys think. I mean these SE-Youtube-handys and this "Life with Playstation"-thing with Google Earth and Google news are evidences that Sony and Google can work together.....imo

According to this article, Sony Ericsson is likely to join the OHA

"Google's consortium of Android partners, the Open Handset Alliance, has stayed stable at 34 companies for months, but Espelien expects it to grow. He says four of the five largest handset makers will make Android phones--a hint that Sony Ericsson has signed on or soon will. Three of the five--LG, Motorola and Samsung--are already OHA members. Nokia, the world's largest phone manufacturer, which announced in June that it would purchase Symbian, probably won't join the Android movement, concedes Espelien. "

Ah, ok smart ass! Why haven't SE ever bothered to put it on there UIQ's? Oh well. I never knew that so thanks.
Still here's hoping it's a smarty Walkman model.

Posted by SE cz
@idumbakumar: here's some small comparison, it's a light sensor, like as on G705:

Nokia find themselves in quite a situation. Though they are in a leading position with S60 it seems they are about to face some serious challenges.

Already RIM has jumped to the number two spot ahead of Windows.

I guess it's good for SE to try out all these OSs. I have a feeling they'll end up settling on at least 2 of them. Why would they confuse their phones with too many OSs thereby losing focus?

Posted by goldenface
Like Tigershark has said, they would be a bit silly to restrict themselves to one or two OS's.

There is so much competition right now that they do really have to try and appeal to as many potential end users as possible and not being the largest of the manufacturers its a good move, especially when you consider how small its smartphone market share actually is.

Next announcement is on 23-24 September. Next week!! Hope there will be something good...

http://semcblog.com/2008/09/17/next-announcement-new/

Posted by Dups!
I don't know goldenface. I personally think that at this stage they don't really have the means to go with 3 or 4 OSs. They just need to consider where the money is and go there. I'm just trying to imagine thier phones running, for instance, Android, WM, Symbian and Linux. How do you begin to specialise when you're all over the show? Let's not forget their bad handling of UIQ.

Posted by goldenface
May be this next announcement will give up some answers. Don't know what to expect really, other than the W705?

Its a two day event so lets hope they have a lot to show.

I remember someone posting a comment here the other day about how Apple copied SE with the shake control feature in their iPod Nano... Well Samsung just announced a few music phones with SE Walkman phone copying features. From GSMArena:

The Samsung M3200 Beat s sports a number of music-oriented features beside the already mentioned dedicated music keys [...] a music player Shake control thanks to the built-in acccelerometer.

Samsung's alternative to Shake control is called Motion Play. It's a unique feature for the Samsung portfolio and a similar control has been implemented only in several Sony Ericsson Walkman phones. It allows you to play or pause music with a tap on the phone, mute the music by turning the phone face down, or change tracks by shaking it.

Again, much like the Walkmans, the Samsung Beat s offers mood-based track sorting so you can always tune your track to your current mood.

[...] And finally, in a last competing move against Walkmans, Samsung have equipped their handsets with a music recognition feature (like TrackID). It's the Shazam's 'Find Music' service. By recording and sending a tune to Shazam server, users can easily learn a track name and artist.

And to think that most people here called them all gimmicks when they were announced! The phone manufacturers (and Apple) obviously think it's worth copying!

Posted by goldenface
Those features are very marketable and they obviously worked for SE. The W910 is still selling quite well in the UK over one year since its appearance. I love the TrackID feature and its about time they linked it to PlayNow.

Posted by Dups!
Amazing, isn't it? TrackID called something else.

Nobody wants post the full pic of rika? Then I make it.
Thanks mizzle and xell. I love it.

Great looking phone from SE ...
Niceeeeee
I would like to see keyboard now, please

Posted by goldenface
Considering its the brother of the G705 the proportions look quite different, the screen looks bigger somehow.

Posted by domipost
I don't really like it. It's too square, and the d-pad layout doesn't fit it, I think

Posted by rustam07
Guys, when it will be announced?

Posted by sunrise_
Next month according to Mizzle.
