90% of people are looking for the phone to perform certain functions...such as communicate (calls, text, etc.) and enjoy media (music, video, internet). Apple's success was being able to deliver a product that met those needs and then some. Most people dont care about an OS and dont want or need one. Thats the reason the iphone is successful.

But this is also exactly where SE can excel. SE has brand recognition in Walkman and Cyber-Shot and they should use it!

SE should release a touchscreen Walkman but one up Apple by making it quadband EDGE, Triband HSPA, possibly add 802.11n, skip a complicated OS and utilize a flash OS a la Prada phone, add a decent 3.2MP autofocus camera. Bundle that with a 4GB-8GB card and sell it for less than 400 bucks. Plus, because its not the Jesus Phone, carriers will be able to subsidize it. SE will rule the roost!

Oh my, you are indirectly saying that iphone can perform most functions current SE and Nokia offerings can? in fact iPhone lacks most functions seen on current mobile phones today and the biggest gripe would be the need for itunes just to delete phonebook, to store music, and blah blah

Another thing was that with tremendous marketing, advertisements and the famous Apple logo. iPhone has been a successful market hit. not because of those functions you are mentioning mate.

And likewise for the Cybershot line, which should have dedicated cam buttons, xenon flash, and have the look and feel of a camera!

So you say SE did not yet did this with K850?

@ intelegent115

Think the other way. Is the other companies just trying to show that "We can make what you can too!"? That should answer your question. Look at Japanese market. I don't see and SUPER big screens there. Its the quality that counts, not size.

@ kEiThZ

You should go read MR's review of the iPhone. It contradicts you in every way. They TRIED to answer all questions, but they didn't do so well since a lot of even the simple functions are missing. They have the broad functions, but when it comes to specific details in handling those functions, iPhone failed miserably. Also iPhone runs on an OS so people DID care of their OSX.

iPhone is only successful based on marketing that iPod's and Mac's had laid. The design is also sleek and distinct, but that is all there is to it. Nothing more. If you don't believe me, then read MR's review.

All the things you list are all imaginations that only YOU want. If SE is crazy enough to put those in, then they just committed suicide. Marketing is not just cramming all the functions into the phone. It must be used effectively and uniquely. They need to look at the price and also the demand of those functions. So just be happy with whatever SE will have in stock for us in November, because they should already analyzed what is necessary to compete against the others. All I know is it's nothing of what you desired.

I think Miles Flint already put up a great range of products to expand from, and starting November, we should see a good deal of products with different target ranges. If there's more range to the product then the cheaper the price will be.

Dont get me wrong guys. I have been an SE fan since I bought a W800i and presently use a K790a.

I do think the iPhone is hype. That being said, that doesnt mean other OEM's cant learn a thing or two from Apple. Nothing I am asking for is suicide. A lot of the features I am asking for are already in SE phones or planned for the 2008 lineup. I am saying that SE can do a much better job with the interface.

@Kenx3000
I dont think for the average Joe (at least here in Canada and the US) that they can even tell the difference between a phone that has an OS and one that does not. They want to see the spark and dazzle. So why cant SE just deliver on that? There is no need for a full OS with all sorts of additional functionality. Just need an OS that does what most users want.

@razec
I absolutely agree that the K850 is a step up. I am hoping they keep it that way. A lot of people comment when they see my K790a that its like a camera. This i exactly what SE should be going for WITH EVERY CYBERSHOT MODEL not just their high ender.

WRT iPhone
I drew up the iPhone comparison to make a point about what the public wants. Yes, arguments can be made that it was all cause of the marketing, etc. But that does not negate the innovation that they have brought.
In North America most people buy phones locked from their carrier. And they tend to sell low end phones that can go for free with a contract. For example can you believe that Rogers in Canada is selling a K790a at CAD229 before tax, locked with a 2-year contract? And thats their highest SE model. Compared to these offerings the iPhone is a god-send. Now you can see why its doing well. And at $400 for 8GB, despite all its lockdown, its a good deal for the average consumer. Imagine if SE's offering can have better features and be subsidized below 400 bucks. I am deeply worried that other OEM's are not cognizant to where the consumer and the market are heading on this continent. North Americans maybe slow to embrace technology but when they do....they come on strong! I want SE to start competing!

@ kEiThZ

Look at what you're asking and the price you're also asking for. Think the slightest possibility of it being real by SE.

The OS sure doesn't play the most important role, but it still does. If you do say it's not important for OS, then why Flash OS? Isn't what we have already good enough to integrate both Java and Flash? All comes down to how well UIQ will perform in this near future.

iPhone is indeed innovative, but it's still ONLY innovative in design and the finger-usage. There's nothing different in other matter. Yet again, if it comes to details, it's way behind competitors.

OEM could learn from Apple by advertising! That is it, because I can't even remember when was the last time I've seen Nokia's or even SE's commercial unlike Apple that comes up about once every minute(exaggerating). I think most of the OEM's design are in a good range which includes variety for the users to pick, so just the usage part that has to be revamped(Touch screen or whatever).

I just don't think it's a good idea for SE to rush this. Right now Nokia is controlling the pace and if SE brings out the wrong stuff at the wrong time, it'll be just like falling into a trap. I would give them some time to study the pace and catch up later. It's never too late. If SE does decide to rush then we should've seen Playstation phones or Bravia phones a while ago in GSM market, but no, they are aiming those at a better time interval where the market will be ready to use these kinds of phones.

The handsfree that come with walkman phones have a 3.5mm jack adapter...

Posted by SilveR.
But you still can use what headphones you want with 3.5mm with the Hpm75 or Hpm90

Posted by NightBlade
BTW, goldenface, nice job with the front page! I just have one complaint, though:
Make it more coloury. Those pale blue and grey tones are a bit depressing (metaphorically said).

Of course I know that! What I meant is that, the 3.5 jack is not built-in. I just don't like long cord attached to my phone.

I hope SE's ultra high-end phones for next will have the 3.5mm jack built-in.

Posted by NightBlade
I don't care, really (whether a phone has 3.5mm jack). I always use the in-box headsets.

Maybe its a w810/w610i replacement with 3.2mp camera 2.2" screen and 3.5mm jack?? I think something like that would be a big seller.

Yes, it would be indeed a true bestseller.

well it did say TV on many of the other pictures and I really hope that's the case... Sony Ericsson needs to win back by focusing on entertainment! =D

Does anyone know any new news about MicroUSB. I just had a sudden thought: if Sony Ericsson were to focus on their accessories in the early 2008 year, could this be because of their change to MicroUSB? Remember it's just a thought and not new news or rumor.

It's not dvb-h, but UMTS (HSDPA)

it is very strang solution indeed, if the first phone from SE in europe with tv tuner would only have a 2" screen???

you're wrong it's 2.2 inches instead. all JP-8 phones in QVGA screen has to have at least 2.2 inches and above so that texts and any other inerfaces wont be rendered small and invisible to the display. for 176x220 the screen should not be smaller than 2.0 inches

My thinking too. With more and more networks offering TV services, whether by 3G or otherwise, it only makes sense to have this organised into the UI, in the same way say radio channels are. This doesn't necessarily mean however that the device is featuring a TV tuner.

No, mate - you are wrong! Actually, the W890i has a 2" QVGA Screen built-in;)
Maybe you mess something up with UIQ that needs at least QVGA.
The screen size doesn't really matter. And noone says that a QVGA Screen has to be at least 2,2".
The K800i has a QVGA-Screen @ 2,0". The W880i even has QVGA @ 1,8".
And my K750i has 176x220 and its size is 1,7"!
