Motorola will launch uiq 3.3 devices in 2009, according to eomer. It will be really tragic if SE does not do the same - at least show some dignity after captitulating vs nokia and effectively sentencing to death the better symbian UI

Don't forget about Hecaro! I still have some faith in

Can anyone tell me what means "t" at the end of the phone name?

I don't understand why everyone seems to assume that Nokia is gonna run the show with the foundation because they purchased Symbian? Is everyone ignoring the fact that Nokia purchased Symbian in order to DONATE all of it to the foundation? Nokia will not run the show. It is a collective effort and Symbian will be owned by the Foundation and not by Nokia.

I would HOPE that the foundation as a group will go with UIQ as their UI, but that decision will be made by all members of the foundation, and not by Nokia.

Back on topic.... so PopLover... didn't you say you had some pics/info about Hecaro for us?

@ares, so what are we going to do for the coming 2 years? Personally I see 3 options:
1- Get a P1i, prices are already coming down so this may be feasible. Plus, with all the hacking that can be done it has become a very decent device.
2- Get a G900, which I find somewhat risky, at least we know the inner workings of P1 and even though I don't really like it at least there is a keyboard of sorts in the P1
3- Get a WM device like the HTC Touch Pro. HTC does look very appealing but I don't really like WM.
One thing is for sure, I'm definitely not getting the SE+WM combination, at least not for the next two years.

Do you really believe that Nokia will give all that money away for free? The fact that Nokia IS dominating the show is already apparent from their announcement about S60 compatibility. No such thing said about UIQ is there? Let's not forget that UIQ is sacking 2/3 of its employees.
The only thing SE will get is a free royalty to use the new OS in return for their UIQ contribution but make no mistake, the bulk of the things will be run by Nokia.
Two years is a long time and SE already has a hw platform ready so I don't see why they couldn't make an X1+UIQ device. That would satiisfy a lot of people and keep them with the brand until devices based on the new OS appear. That is of course if SE intends to stay in the smartphone business.

Posted by ares
Makbil, i will stay with the p1 for a long time...like you said, the hacking stuff is very cool, and we are just in the beggining. Then when the time comes, i will evaluate the situation, we are still far away from symbian foundation devices to appear

Posted by bodeh6
I am pretty sure that everybody saying that they should keep there P1i/G900 phones for 2 more years is foolish. Of course SE will continue releasing UIQ devices as Nokia will continue releasing S60 phones.

Posted by c96sthl
its makes me wonder is it due to the phone get leaked so early for bei bei/ paris and alicia that SE look into people respond...when we comment it is bad...they just kill it haha....like they willing to listen to our comment?

Some people really have trouble with comprehension... What part of "the new platform will be backwards compatible with S60" don't you understand? Not UIQ, just S60.
SE may release a low/mid end UIQ3 device but I doubt even that, all SE will release is plenty of toy phones. UIQ is dead. End of story.
I do hope that SE release a Symbian version of X1, that would fill the gap until the new foundation is ready.

Symbian Version of X1? No. No no no no.

Not trying to cause any arguments or anything, but I'm glad. Sony Ericsson just couldn't do a PlayStation phone in the way that Sony could. It would likely fail to deliver like a few of the latest Cyber-shot and Walkman phones.

Why not? Seriously, we know SE can't produce another decent UIQ3 phone so this is the best option available. It's not my favorite form factor but given the circumstances I'll settle for it.

It'll be better if it's android based

@makbil
Well, I was also wondering what to do soon with my phone's exchange. And I think I won't stay long with P990 since I need an upgrade with HSDPA or Flash.
P1 does not have it. Although, it has a decent RAM and many advantages. And it's soooo cheap now. But it has one cruical mistake: lack of search in Contacts.
But, I think I'd jump to HTC camp maybe, since TyTn II is available and TouchPro will be soon. I was also considering E90 but lack of touch is horrible.
Anyway, there's indeed a question:
If makers plan to launch first unified Symbian device in 2 years from now, what about the 2 years gap? They can't stop releasing Symbian phones.
But they also canceled Paris... I have no clue.

Posted by ares
doministry there´s a handy little app that can search through contacts (and everything on the phone if you want)

I think that the black/orange phone is P10. It does look better than the previous prototypes but I thought orange was specifically for Walkmans though.

When is the Walkman announcement coming? Any pics available (no cancelled phones please)? Are going to keep the weather widget that we saw on Alicia?

Some time back PK said that there would be a number of devices with the Beibei scroll wheel, do you still stick with that PK?

A lot of people are still shocked by this Symbian Foundation thing. With input from everyone, the OS will be better. No reason not to buy UIQ now, no reason to go to WM. People who use WM after using a P1 will be horrified.

I agree, I very much doubt that SE will release anymore UIQ phones. However, IMHO the OSE-phones (are they called features phones) are far from toy phones. The high ends got most of what people want and need (in 95% of the case much more than what they use) and they're usually MUCH faster than UIQ phones.

I think that the meeting schedule at SE headquarters are quite busy right now, what to keep, what to throw away?

Is a replacement for the P1 due soon?

According to the following phone shop:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/14957.htm

"Limited stocks available, this product is soon to be discontinued."

I really hope they don't think the replacements are the G700 and G900

Just an observation; PK (and others 'in the know') has been awfully quiet the last (couple of) week(s)...

Posted by badassmam
PK is probobly listening to music on a new Walkman W960 replacement proto, touring the World and taking shots with his C905 while e-mailing and messaging with his P10. He doesn't have time for Esato, keeps him busy and I bet he loves it.

To the testers out there; if you get a proto and you don't like the buttons for example, would change the buttons because you say so? Do you have any input into the phone's design or do you test the retail ready products?

Does Linda have LightEffects, and will there be a NonWalkman branded version like with w580i/s500i ?

where are exactly the differences between w760 and this one ?

especially the design (maybe Linda doesn't have GPS, I didn't check).

I think Linda is successor of W910 and W760 is successor of W580.
m-one, what do you think ?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@darknoob: I think that makes more sense. Especially as you seem to think Linda's specs are a bit more high-end than a W580i replacement would be.

Posted by makbil
After some consideration I've now decided what to do. I'm getting a P1 (it's quite cheap now) which should satisfy my requirements until next summer. Then I will probably get an HTC Touch Pro (the price should come down to an acceptable level by then), which I will keep until the new Symbian platform devices begin to surface. I will reevaluate the situation at that time.
What can I say, I absolutely need a touch screen and an FM radio and currently P1 is the only device that has these - among others.

Posted by ares
nice choice my friend

and with DriveCtbeforeZ next week, you should have more cool hacks soon

Posted by doministry
@makbil
I also think of it.
The additional advantage is that you don't waste time to learn a new system.
But I still consider X1.

Posted by Phoner
@makbil
Nice choice
I currently have it. It's a great device and I am sure I will be using it till something really better comes to change it.
Also looking forward for the Z: disk hack

If the rumor is true that the canceled Paris will be released in Asia then i'll rather buy it. It's not my dream Pnext but Paris is still better than P1i because of (likely)HSDPA, Dpad, gps, widgets, UIQ3.3 etc. Wow! i realized that it's not bad at all! Anyone who says that specs are bad should make P1i worse. I already have all the UIQ3 softwares i need so i'm not really that worried about Symbian unity.

After two years? it's normal to switch to another handset preferably with that unified OS. so no problem!

Well, i would also exchange my P1 for Paris, at a minimum cost, of course...if i said i will stick with P1 for a long time, Paris would also do, because it does have everything i love on the P1, and some more, althought not being what we wanted in terms of processing power

Pk hinted that the Paris replacement would have more megapixels. So hecaro should have 8.1 mp if it were released.but chances are slim now.and touchscreen, qwerty and vga recording were in paris too.

16GB is last years flavor, either impress me with 32/64/128 SSD at 1.8" all three sizes are available. again SE one step behind the leader. its not about following the pack as they prove year in and year out with the MPx count for the CS line, so why would storage be different? cost? hmph! another excuse. you create buzz and then use it to sell other phones but in order to create that buzz you have to excite, its like static electricity you have to keep rubbing the carpet to generate a charge and then ZAP! you touch someone else and pass it on, rubbing your feet a few times wont do anything but have the person next to you asking why your poking them ... with nothing to show
