The All New Sony Ericsson Portfolio for 2008

Fact:
The first products that would run on the new Unified Symbian Platform would start surfacing on 2010.

Inference:
Considering S60 is Nokia's bread and butter (which S40 is as well), they would not stop introductions of solutions running on the same platform until 2010 despite its imminent doom (or at least, re-naming). But of course Nokia can afford to do that since the new Symbian would be founded mainly on S60.

Question:
Would SE do the same for UIQ? With the cancellation of Beibei and Paris, one would think that their next Symbian-based phone would come out two years from now. Would that be correct?

On a personal note:
S60 touch looks horrible. If that's how the new UIQ's gonna look like then beh. Hope SE would make a software shell.

Ditto: ihmo Nokia's UI designers should be replaced by SE the S60 Touch UI looks functional, but it lacks some lackluster aesthethics that SE UI can offer If only they would make the unified platform's User interface look like an android or A200+capuchin...

I think you misread the news announcement. Nokia is NOT the main owner and beneficiary of the new foundation. The news article clearly states that Nokia is purchasing the rest of Symbian and DONATING IT to the foundation. Therefore, all of Symbian will belong to each of the members of the foundation and not to any specific company.

The point of the foundation is to create an open source Symbian with a GUI that will take the best features of each and combine them into one. Therefore, I don't believe the interface will be ugly like nokia's. If you read the article, basically everyone is GIVING their secrets and what they own to the foundation for the benefit of all.

THAT is why it is great news. EVERYONE will benefit, not just one company, and not just one company will control. It is a collective effort that will result in a platform, OS and GUI that will revolutionize the smartphone world for years and years.

UIQ is not dead. I will happily purchase a UIQ phone now even knowing this new information. What does it really matter? So what? Many of you were happy to purchase a UIQ 3.3 phone, knowing fully well that there is a good chance the next iteration (UIQ 4 maybe) would likely come out a year later (at least this was what we all though until now..)

So, for all you who are "disappointed" and "angry". Maybe try reading the press release again and take it for what it REALLY says instead of superimposing your own words/thoughts into the text.

Posted by BoyBawang
UIQ 3.3 already has the best features of Symbian 9. If Nokia is really sincere with her intentions, she could have suggested UIQ 4 as the new Symbian OS.

Just because one project is in devolopment, does not mean that another one can't be in another stage in development. Typically a phone takes about 2 years to develop, from conception to production. This means that the C905 was being dreamed up and developed while the K800i was announced. Wierd, huh? Makes you wonder what's in their notebooks right now.

@moogoo, thank you. Your post was definitely needed to set a few people straight.

Let me ask a question then to the people that are disappointed by this news...............

How would you have reacted if SE had not been a part of this Unified Symbian platform? If this announcement had happened with the rest of the companies getting together on this project without SE involved, what would you have felt for the future of SE and UIQ?

Posted by ljf881
Some more news about UIQ. According to an article in a swedish newspaper the company has known about the changes for about a month.

200 people, of 325, will probably have to leave the company before 2009. 125 is needed to give support to existing UIQ customers for the rest of 2009.

In swedish:
http://www.blt.se/nyheter/kar[....]as-pa-uiq-i-ronneby(707934).gm

I don't think there will be a UIQ4, and my guess is that there won't be any more smartphones with UIQ from SE. Why bother with an UI that is a dead end?

Very interesting times ahead. More WM-phones, anyone?

Posted by BoyBawang
I see no problem if SE will continue their current UIQ line. It can exist together with the new unified OS. This is not the first time SE handles multiple OSes I guess.

That's the easiest solution I can see.

The reason why SE bought UIQ in the first place was to get control over the company since it failed to deliver what they wanted in time. The delay of the previous P-series phones was very much UIQ-related.
IMHO SE don't want to develop an OS, they want to design the phones, the applications and services.
In an interview from yesterday SE representatives spoke about how to focus on applications and services on the phone, and not the OS (will try to find a link).
You don't continue an OS development by sacking most of the staff.

X1 vs Touch Pro ... opinions?

Definitely Touch Pro for a number of reasons. The most important being SE's lack of experience with WM. But I would still choose a Symbian version of X1 over any WM device, I could happily get along with it for 2-3 years.

Yeah, it's an idealistic vision. I'd be happy of that, but it just doesn't go this way really.
And maybe will lead to a new solutions, there's actually no choice if they want to stay on the market anyway.
But please, be serious...... So Nokia buys THE REST of Symbian to help poor SE and Moto? NO!!! To benefit, it's a market and sales, not a gentleman's club.
Of course they have to donate, other way the whole foundation is nonsense.
It can give something positive in two, three years - why not?
But now is now, and I'm the customer.. And SE will not bring it.
UiQ FIRES people, as stated above. It's a fact. Why - because of develpement? No, it's because it's just over. And as was written somwhere else, symbian workers will become Nokia workers.
It's clear - UiQ is over.
Besides, it's clear - Motorola lost a lot of time and money with the alliance with UiQ, and it gave them nothing really - Z8 and Z10 did not make it.
Also remember, SE is loosing money now, so they have to CUT costs, not enlarge it. That foundation is a way to do that. New UiQ device will not be soon, and they also want to make it cheap.
Also, cancellation of the two devices they worked on, means massive change of plans.
So, I'm sure it does not look so nice and bright.
P.S. The things I'm saying are not just my thoughts, they're facts...

All this is really a bit Off Topic. We now have two threads thrashing out the implications of yesterday's announcement.

Nokia buys Symbian! (Mobile leaders to unify the Symbian software platform)

I don't know what's got into everybody lately. Since yesterdays announcement some members seems to be at each others throats.

Can we get back on track?

Yes, Pop Lover. Those of us who held our breath waiting to see your Hecaro pictures have already expired

No pressure of course....

Maybe poplover was already hit by a bus , that would at least clarify his absence.

My info: NOTHING soon.
It's possible that it'll come out AFTER X1.

Nothing? And what about Alicia, Linda, Patty, Kumiko, Remi?

Posted by xell
Alicia is cancelled - m-one and rog definitely confirmed that on SE-World.

Posted by darknoob
yep I also heard Alicia canceled, maybe because It was too similar to W980 ?

Linda is planned for September, It must be announce soon , no?

Does sb. know sth. about thr loudspeakers of Linda? Does it have Stereo-loudspeakers?

Tobi

Posted by iqtidar
what is going on with se? So many fones cancelled.

Posted by domipost
Yeah, why is Alicia cancelled?

I allways loved SE (wel from my first mobile phone, that's only 4 years ago, as I'm just 14 years old), but now they are really weird IMO.

I'm just hoping for an ts walkman with decent specs, and for SE to survive

Yes. First T270, than Paris with BeiBei. Now Alicia...

I dunno whats going on. SE would have to be stupid to go and develop Alicia, then cancel because its too close to the W980. They wouldn't make two very similar phones along side each other without a reason... Its all a bit confusing at the moment. Maybe SE is confused too.

Posted by Yakkaimono
Wasn't it the same case with M610 and P1.
I think SE doesn't know anymore in which direction to go.

Posted by Mizzle
Nothing has really changed, the problem is that people now - unfortunately - know a lot more about what's happening behind the closed doors than they did, say, three years ago.

Out of ten prototypes, about four will continue in development, and maybe two will be announced and released. That's just how it is.

I meant UiQ phones exactly.
Costs costs.. SE has a serious drop in income.
And made few huge mistakes.
So they cancel expensive projects which wouldn't be bestsellers..

Why not cancel such uncompetitive phones ?

Posted by geir-ove
And what about W760? It was Press released 7th. of January, and still not available at shops in Norway. Some Web shops say 30th. of june as a release date, but that is 6 months from press release to the market. In the mobile business that is "very slow". So SE does not show SPEED right now. They should re-consider the definition of "Comming soon" as well. Example: http://www.playnow-arena.com
Been there for a long time as well.......

Totally agree with you on this. People really seem to be far well-informed than they should and that is why people worry too much about things they would never been supposed to know. Less knowing sometimes mean better sleeping

Which leads us to this thread.

Posted by goldenface
There are always a number of projects out being tested, its what works best that finds its way to market, a lot never see the light of day.

Remember the first SE flip phone to be released just before the T610? - cancelled but there are protos floating around.

A good Signature Walkman device is what we need now. Announcement soon hopefully.

Alicia is not cancelled. It is reserved for certain markets.

Linda is the followup/replacement for W580i I guess. Reminds of a scaled down version of W910 in both dimensions.

My favourite is Patti since it brings Cybershot and Walkman in one device.

Posted by m-one
@prudent

Yeah...Linda is the successor of the W580i
Alicia has been cancelled for Western Europe, so we won't see it here.

I believe this colour variant is the one called Black Orange or Orange Black.

so is Paris still alive for the american market maybe?

The all black version looks great. Interesting to note of the orange found in the keyboard, as mizzle pointed out.

I still prefer blue =D
