So I updated mine today to 037 (the Recovery fw) from 029. And then WTF!!! Chinese writing language has disappeared as an option. Chinese UI is still available, but no g*dd*mned input!!
Also, svc settings messages are not recognized by the phone anymore. They're received as normal sms's with strange code symbols.
From the Svc Menu, mine is a SG Generic fw with APAC-ANZ customisation.
Anyone else have same experience?

Still no update for my non-branded K850i in Australia...
Is there any (free) way to upgrade the firmware? I'm hoping it solves my problems re: HSDPA - I can never get the H or 3+ icon to display even when I have full 3G reception on Vodafone, which offers HSDPA.
......................................................................................................................
Hi got the same problem. with the 3 network i get a H , but Optus i only set 3G...strange.
Posted by cableguy
Im using 037 on o2 ireland, which has an ericsson hsdpa network. But i have never seen a h or 3g+ symbol even though i know im in hsdpa coverage, my download connection is 700kps when using my k850i as a modem.

It is great to see that Voda have released this update but they have not fixed a bug with sending one text to multiple people where if you chose to send one text message to more than 10+ people at one time, the message turns to picture message and refuses to send even as a picture message
Does anyone else have this problem or is it only voda branded phones?

Mine is unbranded K850i. Updated via SEUS to R1CA037 and I still have Chinese T9. Mine is also APAC-ANZ.
Does SG mean Singapore?
What does Recovery Firmware mean? Did SEUS state it clearly on the screen?

Just updated my UK Vodafone this morning. Now running 037.... Just as well for them, was about to phone them and get it replaced.

Just to inform, my firmware is 1200-4404 R1CA037 071012. And it has Chinese T9.

I updated mine too but like i said previously, with it having the "OPER SPECIFIC" and not having all the features it originally had i am seriously considering taing it back, wrecking my head!!

If you've only just got it then it should already have the latest software on it (037). I got mine on the 5th Dec and its got 037 on. That isn't the one that gets rid of the faults though, the flash on mine doesn't go off in time with the shutter.

The only issue I've had after upgrading to 037 is my MMS no longer send. It always says service unavailable...

Go to http://www.gmail.com/app on your phone, and download the file.
It should work fine

I can confirm that Gmail, Opera Mini and Yahoo!Go run smoothly on my K850i R1CA037. No issues at all.

So should I be able to update my Vodafone branded phone on SEUS now then?
I'm running R1CA029, but it keeps telling me that there's no update available.

I just tried to update my phone again and it's saying "update not available", whereas yesterday it was letting me do the Recovery update as many times as I like.
I think they accidentally let us do this recovery update as it wasn't ready and now they've stopped it.

I would have thought that they have pulled the update. The new firmware was missing a lot of VF customisations and was missing the VF Live! certificates, so none of the Live! content works.

Just received my new K850i today. No burned out LEDs!
Strangely enough, it seems the construction quality is a lot better than my previous one, and wow, the pictures don't have the flash overburn! It seems they either made some adjustments to the flash timing or the processing, I'm not too sure, but this phone, even though it's the same model, has minor improvements that make it a ton better. Same firmware though, R1CA037. Probably just because it was produced at a later manufacture date.

Well people I went to usa on holiday (Just got back) to use my K850i and i sure did use it.
The phone worked flawless, I sent aprox 200sms back to the uk, over 300 mms back to the uk (Pics and Vids) and nothing failed once.
Made a fair few calls back to uk to and every one connected, no notice of noise, hiss or anything.
Im on O2 here in the uk and my phone always stayed locked to at&t in both Vegas and Florida. 3G signals in both places are superb. You only loose 3g if your inside some buildings or deep in buildings other than that its very stong. If i didnt have 3g i always had edge with out a problem.
Phone only connected to t-mobile on 1 occasion when i was traveling on the freeway.
3g: Couldnt try Video calling as of yet at&t dont use it for this only data.
Then on the last day, the phone went drasticaly wrong.
Locking up
Couldnt use the middle touch screen button
pressing * to hard or any way arround there started to become my middle touch screen key.
Text would go to people on there own, you could watch the phone do this when you you was trying to type.
The back was coming loose as well.
Master reset did nothing, infact on doing a maser reset it was like the middle key was held down as it kept coming up with error like wrong key etc.
So phone is going back for a replacement tom.
Ive so far had
2 x K850i Blue W39 (1 phone lasted 2 weeks) (1 phone lasted 2 seconds)
1 x K850i Blue W41 (Lasted 3 weeks)
1 x K850i Blue W44 (lasted 4 week and 3 days)
So my 5th K850i I am aiming for at least 5 weeks
Sorry to say, that the build quality is shocking (like substandrd plastics) and the software is a joke.
I am a SE loyal and die hard fan, but if this one fails Im having a Nokia N82. Sorry SE but you don't seem to be doing anything to fix these problems at min.
I just hope that the new k850i is better built etc
Any way just a couple of my pics all taken with the K850i with R1CA037 software, no modifcations at all.
Enjoy

Some things i have noticed in the past few days..
firstly the video playing being laggy is a codec problem..if u manage to get the correct format then all will be well..as a matter of fact if all the videos are of the correct format, it speeds up the media player, as i think it tries to read the media info every time the player is started..something like what happens to windows explorer if u have some avi files which cannot be read properly..cpu usage goes high when u access those files.
The problem is that the phone wont play any files properly that are not exactly 320 x 240..say some file is 320 x 180 ( like a widescreen), even then with all remaining parameters like bitrate/fps correct, it still wont play it properly..
secondly the operation failed while trying to install over internet, has somehow mysteriously fixed itself..i tried with 4 or 5 diff sites where i was getting this error before..as of now thats gone..weird.
Frankly with all the various problems goin on, i am apprehensive about even updating my firmware..i have no real core problems as yet, dont know what new probs the new firmware will bring in..
somewhat disappointed with SE..feature phone with screwed up features..
Posted by obentou
Current production date I have is Week 47 of 2007.
@darrengf:
I honestly don't know what to say, I don't get how a phone can spontaneously blow up in your face after such a short period of time. And 2 seconds? I can't even imagine that, lol.
I'm not sure how you take care of your phones, or what abuse they've gone through, but 4 K850i's is ridiculous... I just hope mine lasts longer than that
edit 2: Actually, I agree with the K850i build... the first one I had had its 2nd LED burnt out, this new one I got has all LEDS working, but it seems one of the keypad LED's arent on par in terms of brightness compared to the others... I have uneven backlighting.
GOD DARN SONY ERICSSON... messing up their flagship this way is really a put-off.

Im so careful with my mobiles, prob too careful.
Once ive done with my mobiles I sell them onto my firends and there all in pristine condition. To be honest you would never have noticed if any one had them.
I think i might start to drop them to see how long they last.
The 2 second one. - took out of box, switched on and it went back in the box. (Phone fault not the battery)
I have a w300 as a spare phone, this has been dropped, in red wine, thrown arround the room and still works perfect (I didnt do the dropping etc) The phone was given to me as spare and its a goiod job. In last 2 months i have used this more than the k850i.

I'm now on my 4th k850i which was just delivered this morning. The first one I had was sent out to me the day o2 got their first stock - the build quality was shocking. After 2 weeks the screen just stopped working. I would assume it had disconnected internally, but I didn't want to void the warranty by opening it. The second one I had was just dodgy build quality. Nothing actually broke on it, but the touch screen wasn't sensitive, and the battery flap kept opening, as well as a creaky back. I gave up on that after a few days. The third one I got the touch screen just packed in after a couple of hours, and similar to what has already been said, the only way to get the middle button to work was but touching * 0 or # a lot harder than they were meant to.
But things are looking up. The one I've got now is from just looking at it from a new batch/different factory. All the buttons are firmer to the touch and click nicely when pushed down (IMO how a phone should be), the touch screen picks up every time, and there isn't one creak on it at all.The battery flap is entirely flush with the phone. It also came with 037, so I'd assume it's only been built in maybe the last month. I'm pleased so far, but with SE I've learnt not to become complacent, so I'll wait a few days until I give verdict.

I'd say there is quite a difference between the Green and Blue K850i... the blue one is made of smooth silver side plastic, while the green one uses some sort of matte black, which scratches so easily. If only the green wasn't built this way I'd be holding one right now - had to go with the Blue one so it wouldn't pick up scratches so easily!

Ooooooooooo.... new firmware. I'm excited. R1DA038. Not upgradable to that yet from my 1200-4400 R1CA037 over the air (not tried SEUS yet, I've not installed it on my new PC). I hope they've fixed the problems I've experienced in the past so I don't feel bad when I'm telling people the K850 is the daddy.
Just tried SEUS and nothing. New SEUS app lets you force re-flash your phone, even if it's 'up to date'. Useful feature for those who's firmware has become corrupt.

Found something really annoying the other week whilst away jet setting accros the big pond...
To tun the phone onto flight mode or back tp phone mode you have to turn the phone off and back on again! (thus having to put all your pin numbers in again!!)
Surley SE can make it a shortcut option or in the profile options when you press the power button for a short push.
Sorry for rant but it was annoying having to tun off then on then off and on and off and on all the bloody time!!!
Posted by Raaab
You can be pretty certain that 038 will be a VF only firmware to correct the problems with the handsets people have updated from the botched 037 update.
Believe it or not, the missus actually MISSED the VF icons, so i flashed hers to 038, and it now includes all the opertor specific icons and certificates and appears to be back to normal.
Personally, I'm not sure whether to update mine to 038, as in effect, they've debranded mine for free for the time being.... and VF live never works after it's been debranded anyway...
Posted by Duran
Ye i think so too..the new firmware would probably be something like 045
Posted by alanjrobertson
Woo! The master reset I've done after installing 037 seems to have done the trick and the Gmail app has now downloaded successfully and installed - and even better is now K850i compatible. It's great to have it working again, even just for the little features like turning numbers (even in +44(0)7... etc format) turned into clickable links.
One thing I've notcied on Google Maps though is that the 'my location' function doesn't seem to work on the K850i yet it does on the K800i! Will check out the Google discussion forums re this.
Now can't wait for newer f/w to hopefully fix all the other issues!
Alan

Yes this is unfortunate, but this option can only be found in phones that run off an operating system. Sony Ericsson A100/200 phones can only switch in between flight/normal operations by turning the phone off/on. Their Symbian phones can switch it on or off while the phone is running.

R1DA038 does seem to be a new version of software for the K850i. From what i understand its not just a vf version, however it may not be released for the other networks as i understand that there isnt much of a difference with R1CA037 and R1DA038
As mentioned on hear, lots of people updated there VF branded phones to R1CA037 and the phones became like Generics (Icon all gone back to way SE did them), however as this is not in line with VF, the firmware was removed very quickly when they found out and a new firmware was placed on the net with in 24 hours.
** Who says SE dont read these forums
The newfirmware for the K850i is due in late Jan to early Feb 2008.
From what i beleive, the new firmware will resolve several major bugs, phone speed, camera issues and many more things.
If and when i find out more i will let you know.
Oh and i got a brand new phone in end from o2. w47 and the phone is amazingly different to all the other 4 i have had.
Build quality is much better, batter door fits perfect, touch keypad buttons are superb and you never have to duplicate by pressing again.
phone doesnt creak either.
So im hoping that this one lasts:-)

SE and mobile manufactures do read these type of forums, Esato is a well established forum and a popular one on the internet.
When people write things on hear and if they are major SE do take note (developers read these type of forums to see what the customer needs are and what the faults are)
That doesnt mean to say that every thing will get corrected.
How do you think SE learn about most of the faults and that is the same with Nokia and other mobile forums.
I know that people on hear from SE read these as on the SE forum I see things that are wrote on hear one day are there on there own forum shortly after.
Who best than thge public to test things and then report back

Ye thats what im hoping too...but what i meant is: how do you know they're reading:P?

Well, I just found another "defect" today, not sure if it is one, but it seems on some phones the backlight LEDs arent being controlled properly... when the brightness goes down, one of the LED's stays bright (particularly the one on the top left of the d-pad) and it gets annoying at times...
Or it could be the one to the top right of the d-pad that doesn't have its brightness being controlled properly, because it is a LOT dimmer than the rest. Meh, I'm unsure, but turning up the brightness makes the backlighting problem a lot less apparent. Pics to follow.
So far both the K850i's I've had are inconsistent in these "bugs/build qualities". Getting frustrated =/

Easiest way is to know is like for example The vf firmware.
They placed it on the R1CA037 one evening, many people updated and placed comments on hear like you do saying what had happened. By the end of the day, the firmware was removed and the following day R1DA038 was on there so the phones could update again and this time the icons are back.
I do know that SE read these forums and other compaines and networks do as well. Its free and good feedback for them.

maybe maybe:D they could also get their info from other sites.
Would be cool to see one of the SE'ers post here:)
