K850 Firmware Overview

actually, even though it has been reviewed prior its release after 3 or 4 months, I still bought the unit.

My k850 is working almost perfectly fine, but reading some of the experiences of our fellow k850i users, I feel disheartened and a bit urged to discontinue using this unit, albeit its good condition.

Maybe ignorance really is bliss after all...
But still I'm on SE's side. I still prefer SE's user interface even though SE seems to be falling apart.
I'm accustomed to it.

snipersupra, where are you from? I'm trying to figure out if the less buggy / more buggy k850i's are typically found in certain areas. (as was suggested by Hiron on the following thread):

I'm from the Philippines. But some of my folks here are having problems that I don't experience.

Maybe the difference took place when I took my phone on an SE service center and they completely flashed my phone (a la brand new unit)

@plankgatan

The "skaterboi" pic was amazing!

I recommend you join the World View 2008 contest.
I will be joining the shooting contest as well.

i agree with the above post that this phone was a rushed phone to compete, but i wont be buying a se phone for a while..the k850 is very bulky too, im used to razr2 v9 now

Posted by sniper_supra
I'd still prefer an SE model than Motorola.
Motorola phones have some weird designs, IMHO

Posted by piflechien
Guys !
a new version of SEUS has been released today.
Now it doesn't just update the firwmare like before, it totally re-flashes the phone, like davinci and other.
So you'll loose all your settings and data, but it can be a free and fast method to un-BROD your K850i !

Motorola V9 (or V8) are really sleek and sexy.
What they don't have are camera or functionalities like S.E. or Nokai.

Right now I'm sticking with my K850 until the iphone 3G gets to my country.

I will do the firmware update since this unit is covered by warranty (less than one month old).
I will report about any issue.

lol.

I am not going to buy an SE phone until it is 5-6 months from its date of launch. That way I can make sure I won't run into any funky stuff with the phone and let others report on how good the phone is.

yeah right

In that time SE would have announced their next new phone and you'll want that

Hi to you guys i can confirm that sony ericsson update service really re flashes the whole firmware, I updated a friend of mine phone and after the process i realised it was a totally a fresh install all data was gone down to the phone book entrys are deleted, i thing this a step in the right direction after all some body from sony have been reading the threads .........so for you people with the BROD issues feel free to go reflash on sony site and save some money from davinci and others'''

And to you guys who love sony phones I understand how you feel because i have never used any other brand since cell phone was launch to the world I just simply love the phones ...

Do you reffer to sony site as Sony Ericsson Update Service that you can install on your PC right?

Posted by aremaboy
Is it really a total reflash? Just like Davinci or KulanKendi?
So you have all default content back although you have deleted it?

Posted by zjjunior
Yes, the SEUS can reflash the phone like DaVinci!
The BROD's fear is finish (really?)!!

remove the previous one first before u install the new one.

what version is the new seus that flashes like davinci??

Posted by Sirhackalot
Theres no new firmware nor is ther a full re-flash like the 2 people said above. The latest firmware is still R1F and it updates the same way as before. Why some of you people gotta talk bull u dont even understand.

Posted by >500
sorry but the newest SEUS version does what was said above.

if theres no new update, it gives you the option to continue anyway. it deletes all user settings etc etc. just like a reflash. i was going to do it this morning. but chose not to.

Posted by maaz2020
Where do i get the new one

Posted by piflechien
Just launch SEUS it will update itself

Posted by jbbrs
For me it didnīt erase anything. It showed I already had the latest firmware, and it showed a warning telling me to backup my stuff, but the "continue anyway" option didn't erase my filesystem.

Posted by Hiron
One month ago: Your data such as contacts, messages, apps etc will remain the same...

NOW: Please backup your data, because it will be lost during flashing.

Meaning Full Flashing
But still don't know whether BRODed phone can be cured like KulanKendi or DaVinci. . .

Look at red boxes:

It has done this for years, but it wont fix a BROD.
Unless it flashes the filesystem too now!

Posted by sniper_supra
The old version keeps your files and phonebook untouched, but the new version tells us to back things up.

Anybody tried this out?

Posted by >500
@Duran

seus has never reseted my settings.

Posted by vortigern
hmm.. well it'd be nice to know if it could unBROD, but I'm not keen on it wiping everying each time I want to update.
If the backup saved everything (like the T9 dictionary?) then it wouldn't be so bad.

Sounds like they're having to do it because their software is so flakey they can't update it without risking the BROD

Posted by jbbrs
I tried it this morning and it didn't remove anything (ringtones, themes, pictures, settings, etc.).

maybe some other people just e-mailed SE about losing some data while updating - no reference on Anti-BROD update.

Posted by aremaboy
I just ran SEUS. It found an application update files. OK. SEUS launched well. I plugged the cable. SEUS said mine is the latest. I chose Continue Anyway. SEUS updated my phone once again to R1FA035.
NO. My phonebook, my setting, my data, everything remain there in tact.
It's WRONG that SEUS can flash just like Davinci or KulanKendi.

Posted by piflechien
It's true when you update the firmware, not when you reinstall the same firmware.

Posted by maaz2020
I am goin to try to unbrod my R1F brod now will report later.....

Hm. If my firmware were R1EA037...
Sorry, I can't check it then.

No your wrong dude! I updated my Telstra branded K850i from R1DA038 to R1FA035 today & all my data remained on my handset nothing got erased.

Is this the die of brods???

Posted by JiSm
SEUS never replaces information on K850. Using Davinci etc is a different story.

Posted by Killfr3nzy
would the C902 be a good solution instead of getting a new k850? (sent back the old one for the 3rd time so they gave me 2 choices)

Posted by Killfr3nzy
sorry for dubbelpost, cant edit ..quick question:

i had a Playnow-button on my k850 menu, but it disappeared and it got a new logo even though i didnt do anything, it has now a link to sony ericcson site..

how did this go and how do i return it?

Posted by CruSifiXken
If this is correct, SE may not have lost their minds completely after all....

Posted by buntoo
I got my K850i back last night recovered from 2nd BROD.
R1EA037 is installed in it. Should i update to the R1F....?
i'm really annoyed with that bloody BROD.

i havn't checked the new SEUS. If it can flash the FS as well then i think there's nothing to fear about BROD. but im not sure... any suggestion for me?

Posted by zing
The amount of trouble everyone's having with this phone is shocking.
I've had four replacements, each phone lasting 2 weeks.

Sorry for you, but i reflashed my phone today with R1FA035 and it re-erased everything. It did a complete flash.
Different behaviour on different phones / customisation maybe.

OK I know I renounced getting another phone.

But I've said MONTHS ago that no matter my choice in phones, I keep ALWAYS coming back to .

I know why now. There are just some small things that you miss, and at the last leg of the life of the phone; you find out something VERY cool and love it to death.

* RSS Feeds & Ticker!

For those ppl who's providers (like AT&T or Rogers Wireless) that have Proxy Enabled in the data settings .... the following quote is from HoFo where a fellow member that was just as fustrated helped me out. I'm posting here to give back to others .
I had a problem with AT&T's proxy munging RSS feed urls. I just created a new internet setting that did not have the proxy, and it fixed the problem. Any chance it is something similar?
Dude this WORKED!!!!!
Actually instead of creating a new data acount, I just turned off the proxy on Rogers APN: internet.com . Worked flawlessly. Didn't know just how COOL the RSS Feeds Ticker on the home screen looked!

SWEET!

Dumb question:

My K850 doesn't show the H icon (as in HSDPA) only the 3G icon, but I can get connected beyond 3G sppeds (3G is the same as UMTS which is 384K and I'm getting up to 1.4Mbps)

Is there any way I can get it as in my previous K850?
Thanks.

No
The Icon is gone. It doesn't really matter because as you said you are getting the HSDPA speed even with just the 3G icon.

u k now what dude, i heard that the c902 also has some reboot problems..id suggest you stay away from se for now

Posted by obentou
Not to also mention the purple fringing in the pictures taken by the C902. It may be tempting to switch, but either get rid of the phone altogether and use an older K series or something else, I suppose..

Posted by Togan
yeah i agree something like k800 or k810

Neo-Tech, don't buy this phone, save your $ and keep your K790/K800

Yep, looks like I will have to. I am going to get iPhone 3G when it comes out on PAYG

Posted by harry20larry
Its gonna cost so much when i comes out on pay as you go. People think around 500 --> 600Ģ as apple won't be getting any revenue from o2. Also, whats the point in getting an iphone when nearly all its apps use data, unless you want a fat ass data bill be delivered through your door.

Posted by maaz2020
Sent my K850 to SE service center ,they took is as dead ,wat do u guys think will they be able to solve my BROD or should i get it back and use some 3rd party soft......

Posted by JiSm
They will more than likely resolve the current BROD but it will still not be safe from anymore! R1F seems far less likely to get one so maybe make sure you have this firmware either via SEUS or if not avaliable, use 3rd party.

Posted by maaz2020
I got the BROD after updating to R1F ,got it after 2 weeks or so (after the update)
