K850 Firmware Overview

Posted by Ice Weasel X
My K850i originally had the rev 029 firmware, but I updated it to R1CA037 in early January to test something. Unfortunately, that update killed the text message notification function in my MBW-100. It actually worked before the update.

Anyone know if MBW-100 compatibility is being addressed?

Is there an update who works yet?

I have a branded 3 (sweden).

My fw now is R1DA039

I'd agree with your advice to move to the N95. My experience with the NA version of this phone was great, but like always, Nokia seems to have things working out of the box, while SE takes quite a while to develop their premature software. It's unfortunate really, because I am loyal to SE and despite better alternatives, I'm still on a K850i.

They've offered me a replacement K850i or a switch to another comparable phone (N95 looks the most similar). I've been reading various comparisons on the web and it looks like the K850i normally comes out just ahead on photo comparisons. I know the N95 has some extra features (WiFi, etc.) but I do still like the SE interface so I think I'll give them one more chance - hopefully a newer build model will work better!

A.

I'd go for the N95 Alan. If only for the fact that the best phone forum I've been on (n95users) is for the N95. Friendly, jokes and don't take things far too seriously like here.

While I'm all for consumers having a whinge about equipment that isn't right, this forum really is on a different level to most I've been on. Quite a hostile place. N95users make all newbies welcome, don't treat them like dunces and have a laugh with each other.

Go N95!! I would still be N95 if mine hadn't died and because I voided the warranty Nokia wouldn't touch it. On the flip, bar the camera shutter getting stuck open (a punch on the rear of the casing sorted that!) my K850 is performing nicely. More like a sideways step from the K800 though. It's no better for average usage in my opinion.

The N95 has been there way too long for the K850 to catch up, so expect that the N95 would be very very stable against K850. Plus, the K850 uses a new platform which I believe SE did not polished well when it was released, against the N95 which really never deviated from the rest of the N series - same old menus, same old platform, they just added some bonus feature from the rest and boom - brand new model.
I'd still go for K850.
It just so happen to be the first in the line and they just thought it was fine. Surely SE hasn't seen the rest of the nightmare yet.

Which one of these would best suit my Quicksilver k850i on O2 (UK)

I'm looking to debrand.

What's the difference between the different firmware colours (Quicksilver, Blue, Green) aswell? LED colour?

Cheers guys!

Posted by obentou
Hmm I don't think there should be a difference. Strange that they should name the firmware along with the colour.

I personally have a QSB version too and if I were going to flash, I'd just flash it to any blue or green one.

Video out of sync with audio is now really pissing me off....

Hi guys!

I was just wondering if there are any specific circumstances / situations you should avoid if you donīt want the BROD? Iīm aware it might just hit you even if you donīt do anything at all, but what about listening to music while surfing the internet or taking pictures? Does that cause BROD, too? Or is it really all random? I had several reboots while multi-tasking and now Iīm avoiding it because I have the feeling it will eventually cause BROD.

So, how are chances to cause a BROD by using some certain features or combination of features?

ps. I really like my K850, but this uncertainty pisses me off.

Posted by harry20larry
don't overload your k850 with multi tasking, it has only got a 133mhz processor, unlike its main copetetor, the n95 which can have up to 350mhz. One of the my favourites, make sure you turn of your phone, take out the battery, and then turn your phone on every 3 days or so, so many people have said to me they have had less restarts, and i know that restarts always lead to a brod.

Last month i only had 1-2 restarts, then it BRODed on me while charging over night

Posted by tazzmanx
hmm, I turned it off every night, but I didnīt take out the battery. Iīll try that. thanks!

All those rebooting and BROD issues make me think about what I will do if my k850 will brick for the third time. I live in Germany, and here I can get my money back (by law) and choose another phone if that happens. If I take a k850 again, will that still have those issues or did they figure it out with the newly produced phones (lets assume I would get one fresh out of the factory )? I know, BROD started with the 031 firmware, but I am still hoping this might be a hardware-software-combination-problem.

Well, best thing will be to hope for a new firmware or some miracle to prevent me from a third BROD.

Posted by Tervel
Best (and possibly ONLY) thing to do to avoid BROD - stay away from 031 and R1EA037. Otherwise, if you've had one BROD with either of these two firmwares, chances are you'll get more. I had two BRODs - one after upgrading to 031 via SEUS at which point my phone had never been touched by a 3rd party utility, and one after I fixed the 1st BROD using DaVinci to put 031 back on the phone. After that I used DaVinci to put R1CA037 back on my phone and haven't had but 3 reboots in 3 months.

The K850 has an ARM11 running at 220 MHz, same is the K810.

I turn my phone off every night and take the battery out regularly but it hasnt reduced my reboots or crashes, it has to be the 2 most recent firmwares and it appears too general to find any specific cause.

Do I Upgade?

I recently had my o2 branded K850i replaced by o2 for faulty touch keys - also that handset crashed alot, was slow, and the camera always over-exposed rendering it useless.

Now my replacement is perfect. camera works, it's only crashed once but not BSOD. its on R1EA031. do i upgrade or do i leave it? will the upgrade bring any benefits or is it a worthless risk to take?

R1EA031 is also vulnerable to BROD, so ye it doesnt really matter.
037's media player is a bit faster

I just updated my K850I with the New Version (R1EA037)of the software and i am still experiencing a problem with the camera and flash- It is not going off at the same time as the picture is taken - All in door shots come out black.

Media player is still very chunky when running- Struggles with mp4 movies.

Text while the music playing is slow.

The Auto rotate feature keeps freezing the screen - because i take it in and out of my poket a fair bit.

Can any one recommend new media player that i can download. Can anyone recommend a Media player fix.

Good day to you guys after updating to the new 037 the very day it was released I observed quit a few changes in my use of this phone the first two weeks of updating I got about 3 reboots ocassionally I was using the memory card that I got with the phone (sony m2 512) I change the memory card to a 2 gig sandisk memory micro sd and to my observation the phone works exceptionally well ....and before when i charged i will always get a 98% after hours of charging now the phone charges to a full 100% and all the application runs really smooth and if this what the k850i supposed to work like the its really a damn good phone mp4 still out of sync but that a sony problem so in my opinion alot of our problems is coming from that memory card section thought the phone will have worked best with sony's own m2.

Best thing to hope for is that SE stablelise the phone and banish the BROD and if we're really lucky they might even make the camera decent, as its too hit and miss right now.

After looking through the firmware posts, k800,w910,the releases have continued for quite awhile before most of the bugs are gone. 1-2 years....to me the releases for the k850i are on time with the other firmwares that have been released and it may take just as long for this one to be up to par as the others seem to be now.

I'm on R1CA037 and FOTA still says I have the latest even though SEUS keeps wanting me to shoot myself in the foot and put R1EA037... Fat chance of me falling for that one!

Well, it sucks that the bugs have to be remedied in such a late stage of the phone's life... by that time The G and C series are going to roll out, and hell, the XPERIA, and probably most of us here are going to dump the K850i for those (not me though haha).

When XS++ support comes for this platform, I am sure it will be awesome and worth the wait. That is, if my phone doesn't clunk out by then.

It is best if you post all info about your current firmware in order to find out why SEUS is not offering an upgrade. Besides, I'd highly discourage you from going to the newest because in case you haven't read through the past 100 or so pages, the last two firmwares have a potentially very serious flaw - they can brick your phone pretty much (aka BROD) Anyways, it is very likely that you'll have to upgrade using third party anyways (such as DaVinci).
