i really hope they actually release a new firmware when the C902 comes out. does anyone know when it comes out. K850 is an awesome phone ifnot for the bugs. im praying that a new firmware update is coming soon

Posted by Wild Child
I can only speak of my own experiences with this phone, I have had 3 K850i's, 2 I have broken myself due to stupidity, but I have not experienced the problems that for the most part are the same ole same ole since this thread was started. Maybe Im lucky, maybe...but I doubt it....with any computer which is bascially what theses phones are, if you try to do to many things at once it will freeze and crash, bottomline. This appears to be some of the problems folks are having, I have tried to replicate the issues folks are having on my own phones and havent had luck in doing so. My email works fine, my media player works fine, blue tooth headset works fine. Pictures with some adjusting are fine also. BROD havent had an issue with it on 3 different phones. The one thing I did encounter was the red light under the power button mentioned, but all that was was a battery that had gone bad, switched battery and no more issues. Where I can say Sony has NOT done a very good job with this firmware/software on this phone, the whole thing I was trying to get across was simple, if it isnt a "NEW" problem, then why keep B$tching about the same ole crap. It is going to do NO good to keep kicking a dead horse so to speak. In referrence to the computer and windows scenerio, well um that would be a common thing in big companies, everyone want to blame everyone else, Vista is a prime example, m$ refuses to admit it is a useless operating system that was released as a BETA to the public, lol....As far as "calling" someone on something, well there's a thing called tactfulness which is sometimes lost in a forum or text which was not used when speaking in this thread. And you said it if people keep saying things, people get fed up with it, my point exactly...enough bashing of sony, this was supposed to be a thread to review and help others with things. NOT a company/person/people bashing thread.

cannot agree more with Vlad... K850 has certainly fallen short of users reasonable expectation...

So i just received a reply from the customer service

Dear Mr/Ms W,

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson on the World Wide Web.

There are no (WTF!!!) problems known about the Sony Ericsson K850i. We have escallated your e-mail to the right department. They will check this and maybe there is gonna be a new Software Update available. We would like to advice to to check the Sony Ericsson Update Service on our website http://www.sonyericsson.com.

Thats a general statement@falling short of users reasonable expectations. personally as I said earlier, I can only speak on my own experiences with this phone. But what would you consider a "users reasonable expectations", as far as I can read and see here and from my own using of the phone... the phone does what it says, just not to some folks liking, response, picture quality, blue tooth, etc etc... I work in the computer field you could say and you see bios/hardware updates months and years after the innitial release of a product that yes, may work, but has compatability issues or timing issues etc., etc.,and those are addressed in time. Nothing is perfect from the door. I dont care what it is. So to expect something to be perect from the gate is asking a bit much.

where you referring to my post?
I mailed them about BROD, but perhaps they dont even know about it.
Yesterday i spent €10 on a €400 phone to get it fixed, because they can't code their firmware.

Posted by jor1ge
I never put my phone under any strain, doing multitaskin etc but brod happened when it was in my pocket locked, one hour after i woke up and turned it on in the morning.

Posted by obentou
Yikes. I don't do much multitasking either, but to hear that from you, I think I may get BROD too... well, let's just hope the shenanigans at SE roll an update out before then.

Posted by Duran
even while benchmarking in the background, playing music, receiving an sms & browsing on the internet it shouldn't BROD..

They must be retarded idiots or something, those service repliers. Well, the engineers aren't that much for making the FW working properly either.

I just can't believe they used the word "gonna" in an email. That just screams professionalism...

I do not think that email came from SE. There are numerous spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. It was probably fabricated.

I bought my K850 since December last year, and since then, I've dealt with random restarts, phone freezing and general slugginess, but this is just ridiculous:

Last week I upgraded to the new F/W (R1EA037) and was impressed with the improvement in speed with the media player, but that's about all the +'s i noticed. A few random reboots, yeah, cool, I can deal with that. But NOW, the friggin' MAIN Touch Response key is phucked up. While replying to an SMS, it simply didn't work. I quickly found out later that pressing softly between the '8' key and 'down' button of the navi pad has "replaced" the middle touch-screen key! So you can imagine my frustration when trying to send an SMS immediately afterwards.... Was still able to navigate my around, albeit with some difficulty.

Backed up all the data, took out the M2, did a Master Reset. And NOW??? Its on a continuous loop - phone restarted, and the touch response key in question is being pressed by itself. I turn it on, and it selects Normal Mode for me, goes to Inbox, selects 'Write a text message', opens my contacts etc. etc. while i'm holding it in my hand watching its continuous loop....i need an old priest, and a young priest...

Point is, I'm pissed off. Excuse the lingo but its fu*king annoying.

Frustration aside, dunno if anyone's experienced anything like this? Plan is to send it in for repairs on Monday.

Posted by obentou
lol, perhaps it's dust build up toying around with the electromagnetics... try blowing it with compressed air before sending it off

I used FOTA waaaaay back when my phone was 029, since then nothings come up on it, hopefully they'll get back on track with it and update it at the same time as SEUS

I`m wondering why k850i in SEUS is in B&W colors until the other phones are all in color ... Did you noticed it ? K850i was always B&W ...

That's not in B&W but the new color of K850: Quicksilver Black.

look at LCD ... all phones have Cyber-Shot screen in blue color ... K850i have B&W ...

To say there are no probs is absurd.... have they gone to gordon brown's school of denial?

Also to say that people are running too many things and it causes errors.... I would expect it to slow, maybe but I'd still expect to be able to browse my phonebook whilst listening to music through bluetooth.
Before it died it was unusably slow to do anything if playing music on BT... and then it rebooted lots... and then died (BROD).
I would hardly call that pushing it too much - I was running no java apps or complex themes etc.

How do we go about setting up a class action?

Posted by alanjrobertson
I've had a reply to my letter to T-Mobile UK - R1DA038 is the latest f/w they've approved - apparently their engineers found slight problems (?the reboot issue) with the subsequent f/w updates and therefore haven't yet authorised them yet.

They've offered me a replacement K850i or a switch to another comparable phone (N95 looks the most similar). I've been reading various comparisons on the web and it looks like the K850i normally comes out just ahead on photo comparisons. I know the N95 has some extra features (WiFi, etc.) but I do still like the SE interface so I think I'll give them one more chance - hopefully a newer build model will work better!

WHY do smug people who have no issues with their phone feel compelled to tell everyone else who has that it is somehow their own fault for pushing the phone too hard or having too high an expectation from a £300 flagship product, grrrrrrrrrr makes my blood boil.

Still getting the reboots , 80% of time when phone is rested, thursday phone swiitched itself off instead of playing the alarm i had set.

Then last night I tried to take pics but the camera cover wouldnt open, never had that one before, wtf...

I dont think its a matter of being "smug", if you are referring to me then I will address this comment: My post was not meant to say that the phone is perfect or anywhere near that. What it was, was a simple post stating that continually b$tching about the same ole same ole and bashing this one for saying this and that isnt helping anything or anyone. The mention of pushing the phones to much to where they do crash is a possibility, not a accusation saying its everyone's fault. The camera thing was supposedly fixed in an update, not sure which one. The front page mentions it being fixed.

Camera problem cant be fixed or I wouldnt be experiencing it for a 1st time on the next but last firmware.

Im happy for everyone whos' phone has little or no problems but people will continue to complain until such time the phone actually is stable

My network provider obviously doesnt think it is or they would have released the latest version BUT maybe from the number of returns they have realised that the last 2 releases from SE have been bad.

Posted by Wild Child
Does complaining here help? No. Is this going to solve the issues? No. For those who are not happy with phone, possibly make up a petition or something every sign and find out how to get it to their corporate office.

Do what I did and get rid of this retarded phone. I sold mine and replaced it with the terrific w890i and have laughed at the k850i ever since.

Every now and then I check back to this thread only to see unhappy k850i owners waiting for yet another firmware update.

Why some of you feel the need to hold on to this phone is beyond me. I havent even checked for a firmware update since buying the w890i as it has worked flawlessly out of the box.

Not all of us live in the UK! Most of us here LOVE the camera quality which the W890i cannot live up to. There is more though.

Reasons I purchased the K850i.

* Quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE
* Triband 3G HSDPA!! Right now there is NO OTHER SE phone that has this out on the market ... YET! (Z780/W760i still has to reach retail channels yet)
* QVGA video recording! (I cannot stand the 15fps that the K750i or z520 that I've had previously.
* LOVE the java performance on this phone! 3D gaming is not has high on the rating scale compared to other SE phones but the JSR's are ALL there.
* LOW cost due to my provider's branding ... I couldn't pass up $199CAN on 3yrs at the time. Now that the N95-4 is available on 3yrs but at $499 its ridiculously priced. I also get unlimited on Device surfing @ just $7/mth something completely REVOLUTIONARY from my provider ... before it'd cost $50CAN/mth for that and they took that away 3yrs ago!

- I'm still lucky I have no reboots.

Someone mentioned that the K series is dead and platform phones based on design moniker is no longer going to be followed by SE but in features. I have a VERY strong sense SE is doing this to relieve the pain of the K850i but they KEEP trying.

You fail to realize many ppl are waiting for the hallowed firmware because of SE's track record before with the K750i & K800. Take a look at the fimware threads for THOSE models .... they follow similar patterns with # of issues that eventually where resolved after 6-8mths of phone debut on the retail market. Many ppl paid HUGE quid for the K850i and will not buy another SE phone until their faith is restored. Don't kick a man while he's down ... thats just not cool.

EDIT: For me this K850i is my everything phone, small stark in design and great features. What bothers me the most is the calendar is STILL very old like T68i days. I'll need a more powerful calendar and for that I may upgrade to a BB 8120/8320/9100.

Ohh my god,

I got the Blue Ring of Death last night and I have had the phone 2 weeks!

I SWEAR, the phone is stock, the firmware has not been modded, but I did run the Sony Update Service first day, and I am not even sure if that updated - it's still branded.

When it happened, it was NOT being used, it was sitting idly on my CDS-60 and was in MTP mode. Previously I have recieved calls while it was on the dock with no issue, and so it may be possible an incoming call triggered it, but to me I think it just died, no reason! what a farce. It crashed a few times since I had it, and had a bug that pressing the hang up key in the MEdia Player reset the phone, and the theme was reseting often.

I wish I knew of this bug, all I went by was Sony's comparisons, having a K700i I thought this phone would be awesome, that phone was so good, only rare crashes and resets.

The suddenly dropped out, and went into BROD mode, and since then I have tried removing batt, leaving it, keeping the C down on start etc., and of course nothing.

I won't reflash, I want to know what Sony will do. What is the best direction? I note that some firmwares are region specific, what is mine? I am in Australia? What is the direction I need to take, I have a 24 month contract! The store said they will give me a loan phone and that Sony will automatically replace it, because it is within 30 days, what a frustration.

Can't afford to waste $13 for the firmware, especially if it might void my extended 2 year warranty.

DAMN! I also spent a good $10 on a screen protector that I now need to replace!

Sean.

Check on davinci's site what fw are available.
You can also check with the davinci client what the current fw is, even if it's BRODed.
If you flash to the same CDA/fw, i dont think your warranty will be voided

Okay, so I have had my K850 since November and was working absolutely perfect! I debranded it and software updated it to every version as released without any issue at all. Suddenly I find myself having to travel to NZ so decided to get it unlocked - With unlock code. After unlocking obviously it works with my NZ sim now, but everytime I take a photo, it reboots. It even occasionally restores pictures that I had taken that dissappeared after reboot. I took one before I left Heathrow and 2 weeks later it popped up in my images? WTF? I have tried everything - Master reset, downgrade -> upgrade, operating without memory card but to no resolution. How the hell can I have a camera phone that cant take pictures? Or when it does take a picture, I cant see it for 2 weeks???? WTF SE? Geez. Anyways, it plays music perfect thru my MBS-100 and stays connected to my MBW-100 24/7 and never not received a call - touch wood. They best be fixing this stuff quick or someone will be talkin to Target etc soon.

For God sake if any moderator can add on the first page of this topic that this FW update can brick your K850 because there are too much victims here, whatever SE says to you ,you should mention to everyone that they are taking the risk of BROD if they update their phone right now!!!!
Or even you want that SE suicides itself...

vegetaleb I had NOT made ANY changes, only possibly the official Sony update, I can tell you what the firmware was, I listed it in another post I made, it was R1EA031.

So I do not no what you are implying, that the latest updates are responsible for the BROD?

The way I am reading this LONG and depressing story, people have been getting the BROD out of the box!

While I'm all for consumers having a whinge about equipment that isn't right, this forum really is on a different level to most I've been on. Quite a hostile place. N95users make all newbies welcome, don't treat them like dunces and have a laugh with each other.

Go N95!! I would still be N95 if mine hadn't died and because I voided the warranty Nokia wouldn't touch it. On the flip, bar the camera shutter getting stuck open (a punch on the rear of the casing sorted that!) my K850 is performing nicely. More like a sideways step from the K800 though. It's no better for average usage in my opinion.

I took my K850i out with me on Saturday night as I thought it might be handy to have a camera with flash (first time in months I used it). I used it a few times, taking pics and texting but when I really needed to take a picture of a mate chatting up 3 girls way out of his league the damn thing died on me!

I took it out of my pocket and noticed it had a Bluetooth prompt (some random person must have tried to send me something) and when I said No to it the phone just went dead! I had to remove and re-insert the battery to get it back on!

Since I have a Samsung i780 and an iPhone that I use on a regular basis, the K850i did nothing to warrant using it above those two devices!

Luckily two of my mates had N95's (one 8gb and one normal crappy version) so they took some pics!

I'd agree with your advice to move to the N95. My experience with the NA version of this phone was great, but like always, Nokia seems to have things working out of the box, while SE takes quite a while to develop their premature software. It's unfortunate really, because I am loyal to SE and despite better alternatives, I'm still on a K850i.

Thanks for the replies, folks - unfortunately I'd already called them back this morning and went with a swap for a brand new K850i. I read quite a few comparison reviews between the two but on balance still prefer the SE interface and the slightly less bulky form factor. I appreciate the N95 has more functionality but my Dad has an N80 and I've never really liked the Symbian interface compared to SE (just what you're used to I guess).

Will see how this replacement one is - a lot of the articles I've read have been very positive about the K850i photo functionality so I'm hoping I might be in more luck this time round).

Agree with others that the 850 has been more of a sidestep than progress cf. the 800, although the HSDPA has been a massive boost.

Cheers
