If I were to get one of these it seems updating via the phone or SEUS is a bad idea. Should I only take it to a service centre to get the fw updated?
Also does the phone reboot randomly or when you do something specific?
I thought the latest 037 fw solved everything. Did it take this long for the K800 to get stable? I dont even remember having any problems with the k800.

@zombiecat .. sounds like your battery is flat.
When it's BROD it won't charge, so you'd need to get a desktop charger (I got 2 batteries and a charger for a few quid on ebay)
kulankendi should then find it when the battery has charged which should fix it, although needs a full format.

@ Zombiecat:
This happened to my phone without having BROD first. I did have the same red light on the top of the phone, and neither Davinci or Wotan recognized it, just SEUS but then it couldn't do anything.. I had to send it to Sony to fix.
Good luck.

Hi
I've been having real difficulties trying to get my T-Mobile UK K850i to update to the latest SW version. It's taken multiple attempts for SEUS to get to the 'identifying' step (rather then the phone loading into phone transfer mode) only to be told no update is available!
I took it into my local Carphone Warehouse - they 'updated' it, which seemed to solely consist of them doing a master reset given it was return with identical FW to that it was handed in with! (R1DA038)
T-Mobile telephone CS have been useless so I'm about to write to the Director of CS to see if I have more luck but would be interested to know if any other T-Mobile UK customers have managed to get their phone past 038?
Thanks
Alan

Tomorrow my phone will have one month since the purchase date. During this period I have experienced exactly 4 (four) reboots, none of them unrecoverable. The phone rebooted once while adjusting the equalizer in media player, once when I was looking at my pictures using "Media" menu and switched to next and previous picture (way too fast for its processing power), once while searching for bluetooth enabled devices in order to send a file. I can't remember the circumstances of the fourth reboot.
My device is a December 2007 edition and so far did not accumulate any dust under the camera lens cover or under the screen cover.
FW version is R1DA038.
I wrote to Sony Ericsson AB, explained what BROD is and asked them if they have heard about this strange problem. The first reply was gibberish as they completely avoided the answer, instead giving me directions about how to update my FW. I wrote back, asking them again about BROD and making it clear that I know how to update the phone's software but I am afraid to do it because it might render the phone unusable. The very next day (today, that is) they answered. Guess what they said: the last software version available for the Sony Ericsson K850i is R1DA.
I'm baffled. According to them, R1EA does not exist. Chew on that, K850i users!

Thanks for the advice dude; unfortunately it's not a dead battery that's causing the problem

Thanks mate. Looks like this is the only option. Phone actually belongs to the company I work for, so no worries. Maybe I should just take the bloody thing outside and stamp on it anyway

My best bet is that someone at sony spill the beans on the up coming firmware which will probably carry the R1DA serial because if you carefully look at it its not making to much of sense but again as we acustom doing we wil continue to do so which is wait and see, so for all we know update is probably in its final stage getting ready to launch ... just hope I am right

I'm sorry but this is a VERY isolated opinion. the EA037 has one GLARING flaw - potential for BROD on considerable number of K850's out there. That's not a stable firmware by any stretch of the imagination. I've gone back to CA037 since mid February, when 031 BROD-ed for the 2nd time and since then I've had my phone reboot Three Times... That's about once a month! There are a ton of people on this board alone, not to mention out there who have EA037 and have had it reboot for absolutely no reason what so ever. At least mine (CA037) only rebooted when I overloaded the system and then it came right back up...

It's not about how much it costs, but the fact that i need to spent €8 or €10 to fix a €450 phone, JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE TOO F*CKING LAZY TO FIX THE F*CKING PROBLEM.
Not to mention that i now have to go back to the R1CA037 firmware, and all the bugs that came with it.

my 850i is much more stable than it was before after updating to R1EA037. so far no BROD. however my phone does get stuck and reboot by it self once in a while when i use the camera or use bluetooth.. i really hope SE releases a new Firmware that solves all these bugs. i really love the K850i but i wish it was more stable.

Been givin then option of a w910, lg viewty or n95, went with the n95 because i do use the camera and i cant use a touch screen, having had sony ericsons for at least the last 7 years im having no choice but to change since there isnt anything else by them that is in the same league.

Sorry for the late reply, I had no time to check out the forum until now. The answer is yes, unbranded (Hong Kong).
Something went terribly wrong at SE. They screwed up the last two FW versions, realized it too late and they are now afraid to admit it. Perfectly understandable, admitting such a thing would be a huge step backward and would damage their image and sales. It's a lot easier to deny.
Anyway, lesson learned. Next time I'll crave for a SE mobile phone I shall eat my fingernails reading the forums for a year, waiting for the software to be bug free and for the price to drop to half its original figure. Amen.

Some people were mocking us because we were warning everybody who wanted to upgrade to new FW that they were taking risks of BROD...
Posted by Duran
Also i think that it's absolutely ridiculous that us SE users have to pay a 3rd party company (e.g. davinciteam) to fix the problem.. when SE should just release it's own flashing-program that allows us do re-flash like davinci, FOR FREE!
It's THEIR fault the LEAST they could do is offer a free solution.
I'd almost think davinciteam is a company created by some of the SE fw programmers, so they can privately make some more money........

you cant blame the camera because the pic-quality is shit on some of your pictures, especially when other people get good pictures with exact same camera & cam driver !! (of course it can be something wrong with your camera, but that is quite seldom i think

"its nothing wrong with k850 camera". Incorrect.
I'm a photographer and I still get poor photos from the phone. Several issues cause this, mostly from poor design and not firmware:
Light sensor gets dirty too easily.
Dust gets under light sensor and can't be cleaned.
Phone attracts fingerprints including on lens plastic (this is where the slider design on the K750i was good). This has to be cleaned every time you go to use camera.
Colours are not properly reproduced by phone camera.
Poor design also makes it too easy to block the light sensor.
Also, you will only get the quality of what the lens can produce no matter how many megapixels the sensor has.. and the lens in the phone is no-where near the quality of any half decent digital camera.

@ Wild Child: I am no longer interested to contact them about this subject. They will keep denying or avoiding a straight answer. Since their statement was that the last version is R1DA, those pictures mean nothing - hell, they can even say that is a custom/third party/whatever-crosses-their-mind FW version, NOT released by SE. Not even a movie clip showing the whole event of a phone getting BROD won't make them admit the wrongdoing.
By the way, can anybody check if SEUS still offers updates to R1EA031 or R1EA037? Mine says I have the latest (R1DA038), which strangely coincide with what they wrote in the e-mail.

It's the blue sky that is turning to purple the main color problem with the K850's camera

Absolutely spot on, but you'll have to conceed that a phone camera at this stage of their development is always going to be second best to a dedicated camera. So you can't complain it's a bad camera when you yourself realises a hugh amount of pic quality comes from the lens.
Quick snapping for the moment is what phone cameras do best. If you want to take decent quality pics, get a proper camera. The size of a phone (K850, Viewty, N95 etc) is generally smaller than even the most compact of cameras that produce decent pics. So you simply can't expect the technology implemented in proper cameras to be in a unit that's a phone, camera, mp3 player, organiser etc etc.
You have to draw the line somewhere and realise the K850, N95, N82, Viewty are on a par with a very cheap digital camera maximum.
Onto firmware - I'm on R1DA038. No idea how old it is, but it's been utterly stable. The pics aren't a million miles better than the K800 bar at night. Chuck the pics quickly through Aperture/iPhoto/Picassa etc with some quick level adjustments and they're very acceptable.
How old is the R1DA038 firmware now?

So i fixed my BROD using davinci, but could only flash it to BROD-sensitive fw (031 , EA037)..

Luckily it seems to have been recognised by SEUS, so i'm Continuing anyway, and reloading 038 back on, fingers crossed!
EDIT: hasn't worked

Ok lemme say this much, for the most part, the average user imo would thoroughly enjoy this phone, those that want flawless photo's,perfect email client, flawless mp3 player etc etc etc, then buy the equipment MADE JUST for those services, this is a good phone for the most part. Outside of my own heavy handedness with the phone it has been reliable and stable. This isnt meant to start another bash fest as this thread has turned into, but just some random thoughts pretaining to everyones B$tching and moaning about this or that. Or arguing about this or that. Granted for some users it is not the phone for them as they are totally un-happy with the phone, to those people I will say this, shouldve done some more research to make sure the phone would do what you wanted before purchasing. And granted Sony hasnt done the best by the users as far as firmware, but no new phone series will be without glitches in one aspect or another and there will ALWAYS be someone not satisifed with the product. To sit at the computer and constantly b$tch about something that cannot be changed by anyone here gets redundant and boring to read. The one source of info we had in this place, because of the constant complaining and such will no longer share info. Do I blame him, not in the least...showed that the people who were doing this action were very rude and obnoxious to the guy and he was only trying to share some good stuff. These are my thoughts about what this thread has turned into.

My K850 has now been revived! Thank god for kulankendi. Just hope it won't die again.
I don't mind it too much, only annoyance with all this is that i've got to set up the phone again, download settings, internet, re-setup the blog, applications, push mail, and the such.
However, if i have to do this three of four more times, i might start to mind

Yes, Kulan Kendi client is very reliable and easy to follow. Just download the files you want, find the correct CDA string for the particular firmware (strangely I have to browse www.davinciteam.com to get all CDA list as Kulan Kendi does not even provide it) and flash the phone.
FYI, Kulan Kendi has got the latest R1EA037.

Good news!
SE Canada fixed my phone but damaged it when they sent it back.. They sent me a new phone but it was branded so I have to flash the firmware. I think my old phone had R1EA031 Western Europe Customized Velvet Blue APAC-ANZ... But after buying credits at davinci and connecting my phone and choosing update software... I can't find the firmware i want to install!! Have they replaced it with something better? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Well, I'm back on the SE K850i bandwagon again, to see how good the new firmware is.
Many many improvements, except for this BROD stuff... I have a Quicksilver edition one on R1EA037. Let's hope I don't get hit!

@Wildchild While I agree that some complaints are getting redundant, the fact of the matter is that SE's flagship model under performs in comparison to its predecessors (K800/K810) in response speed, MP3, Bluetooth compatibility, color representation, and if all of that is not enough we have the potential of it dying on us which SE can not even fix, we have to go to other places so they can make money on us due to SE's negligence. Mind you, this is almost a year since the phone came out and SE still does not know(admit) that these phones have a problem. I think you are sugar coating it a bit... So the mega pixels have been dialed up, that is only one tiny variable in determining a good camera. Now to make my self clear, I am not comparing a phone to a digital camera, I don't expect them to perform on par. However, it would be nice for their next generation phone to continue from where the predecessor left off. People are upset because they feel cheated in a way, they paid for a phone (and an expensive one at that when it came out) expecting something that they did not get. If folks wanted a phone without all those things you said in your post then they could have bought a lower end phone and expect those functions not to be there. If you bought a top of the line computer but you network card did not work properly and had trouble getting on the internet, would you say the same thing? Well, my windows works, I can type documents, and play games, so what if the internet cuts in and out... Or how about if your windows dies on you and you had to take to it a shop because the manufacturer didn't think the problem was their fault. While exaggerated, this is what is happening...
As for the "person" that abandoned us, people got frustrated with him. He would constantly say that he got new info but he can't share it. If you post in the forum about your insider info then inform the rest of us, if you can't say, then don't say anything at all. When when people called him on it he turned spiteful and and said we don't deserve to know, like we are children that need to be rewarded for good behavior. Give me a break, you either help unconditionally as a service to the community or don't help at all.
