I've been following this thread with interest since last October - I'm on branded Orange (UK), and I've upgraded to each new firmware as it's become available through SEUS. The original 029 firmware was pretty rubbish - I had several reboots whilst preforming pretty innocuous operations (sending an SMS, surfing internet etc). 037 was good, and 038 was a further improvement although I didn't see too much impact on battery life unlike others.

I've now had 031 installed for about two weeks - I had two reboots in the first week, but absolutely no problems since then. Someone has mentioned this previously, but I wonder if those having BROD problems are squeezing every last piece of functionality out of the phone (complex flash themes, java games/apps, 12GB SDHC cards etc) - particularly how the startup sequence on the phone is handled.

I've got passcode protection enabled, and so the phone must pause to await input before fully initialising (or at least this is my interpretation of the startup sequence) - perhaps those encountering BROD-type problems have not got any kind of security prompt at startup, and hence the phone is overwhelmed with the speed/complexity of the startup process? Can anyone who has experienced BROD elaborate on whether they have any security prompts?

For those still deliberating on whether to upgrade to 031, I can't say that the media player is a great deal faster, but I'm liking the vibra-keys option, and the battery life seems to be (slightly) improved from 038, as do the quality of photographs - however, the xenon flash misfire issue is still occasionally present in the 031 firmware, resulting in dark pictures.

Also, for those that haven't already figured it out, battery life can be much improved by disabling 3G services until they are required.

Hopefully SE will produce the killer firmware next time around - otherwise, I'll be looking at Nokia for my next phone - it's not a bad unit overall, but SE must improve the beta testing of their firmware before releasing it - from what I've read of other people's experiences, it is nowhere near good enough for a multi-national company of SE's standing.

I had the security prompt on. If you mean the SIM-pwd.

I used GSM only, NO 3G or HDSPA.

I replyed to a SMS. Turned on the keyboard lock, and lay it on the table. After a few minutes I checked if I had got any new SMS, and discovered that the phone had rebooted and become a BROD.

It's over 5-6 weeks since I updated, and I almost never got any random reboots. Nor had other problems.

This s0cks.

hi friend,

ya i also suffer due to this problem
i could download the pics. often tells me can't load the page, page is too large to load, like that. though it has 3g, edge. y its telling these silly errors,
so many limitations in opera mini
1. we can't save pictures directly.
2.we can't get the dynamic updates of a page.
3.we can see playing gif or flash files on the opened pages.
4.for all downloads it will open a default web browser.

u can use opermini mod 2.0. its nice with so many features.
u can download all the things without opening t system browser.
for that u have to point the valid download link and press 1 then choose the right path either in phone/card memory. and download

u can save the pics in the page, u can save the pages,it has file,u can open so many tabs. build in file manager, and so many stuffs.

follow the link u can find it.

What firmware are you on?

Just to share my recent experience (i'm on f/w 037, old but gold ):

Was using the camera on and off on day and everytime i switched the camera OFF, a message came on screen saying that another application was using too much memory and (here's the best part) that i should close this (phantom) app before STARTING the camera....?

this happened a few times and next thing i know the phone went dark, EXCEPT for all the blue camera lights on the keypad AND the blue-ringo-of-death-o. The phone then promptly restarted itself without asking for a PIN.

Only then did i realise that i had not manually restarted the phone for weeks, and that the internal memory was not refreshed (as recommended by the idiot engineers at SE- it's written in your manual!) what next for the future K85X? Will they recommend that we do a one-hand hand stand while restarting the phone every two hours to refresh the memory because the new phone needs to arrange it's sub-atomic memory particles and align them with Venus???

i dont know if this is to do with the latest fiemware or not but when attaching a video to a mms the quality is reduced prior to sending.
it doesnt matter if the video is smaller than the 300kb limit for sending,it still reduces the quality and it becomes very blocky and un-viewable.
i can also select videos larger than the 300kb limit and it reduces them to fit.
pictures and audio is unafected.
i'm on O2 network with 031 firmware.

It seems everyone here is using either Europe or American firmwares.
I will be flashing mine to Hong Kong firmware, but since there aren't any users with that version, I'll impatiently wait for a more stable version.

Goto Memory Status and options and clear out ALL Certificates older than 1 Day (incl 1day). Reboot. Then try again.

Also are you using Opera Mini 4.1 Beta "Signed" ??

do you mean the "three" version. if so is that for the UK? my "three uk" is still on 029 through seus!

Posted by The Barron
I've just had the touch button problem where pressing any of the keypad buttons registers a press on the centre touch button rendering it useless, rang Orange UK up after rebranding it and the replacement phone will be with me tomorrow evening between 6-10.

Not bad service, just hoping for the C031 firmware now and a later build week than 07W46

Anyone know when the next Update is to be released?

Can someone please outline the steps to debrand a k850i using DaVinci? thanks!

Well i have gone back to 038 generic for now, if another comes out i will change to that but am not going back to 031 just to have to pay another £6.50 when it BROD's. If i change to generic but leave my CDA as vodafone one will seus update it to a voda firmware ?

pathetic how SE lets hundreds and hundreds of people get BROD by not releasing a new FW...

Hey Duran how do ppl get the BROD. Im on latest 02 Firmware and I havent got the BROD. - Do people who have handsets manufactured earlier get the BROD? I doubt its the Firmware if it affects only some of us. If it addects some of us then should it not affect us all with the same FW??

trust me i had that opinion it will affect you, mine worked fine for a week, then i copied files from memory card to phone and it random rebooted, it would just reboot when it wanted. I thought it was fine until it restarted randomly and then never came back on.

Sony should realize it a problem, they might have done and may be writing a new firmware but to realize one thats as unstable as this one is stupid, these things are meant to be tested !!

Mine is still working perfect on 031 since release.
I still think its a hardware problem or a user problem I dont think its the software or SONY would have pulled it by now.

Am using R1EA031 updated via Davinci on my Rogers K850i, never had a BROD. Been 2 months.

Used 1206-0882 Customize ID/Velvet Blue APAC-ANZ flash software

Only problem, Zenon flash does misfire when taking pictures, so they do turn out dark. Otherwise phone works perfectly fine.

My K850 is currently of for repair due to the middle touch button fault that seems to be quite common. I specifically told O2 I didn't want it repaired and instead I wanted it replaced but they've still sent it to the repair agent anyway. Whats the chances that its going to come back fixed? IE, the same fault isn't going to re-appear within a couple of weeks?

On the plus side, I do get to use a Nokia 6300 till I get mine back which I really like, it reminds me of the simply awesome 8310 I had years ago and absolutely loved!!

@1889
Orange just offered a replacement in a call to customer care that lasted less then 2 mins, replacement due to arrive in the next few hours will post impressions.

Gone back to my k800 in mean time and forgot how small the screen was in comparison.

Guys,

Is anybody elses flash really powerful, and as it would appear very hot?

I picked up my phone yesterday evening and the back was pressed against my wallet. I hit the camera button a few times and it took a picture, and flashed. The flash has actually burnt my wallet and there was smoke!

I got a black magazine and laid the phone flat against it, and took a picture - it burnt the magazine.

Is that a hardware issue? It happens with my friends K850i too, and he is using a different firmware.

Is that not a safety hazard? I wouldn't like to have had my hand on the flash when it went off!

Greetings...

I got my K850 back from CPW last Friday after over 2 weeks being repaired for the droopy middle button issue. This morning I woke up to find that the regular reset had resulted in a BROD

I've had a BROD before and fixed it with Da Vinci. However that seemed to change the CDA even though I chose "Same CDA" for the firmware. Rather than wait two weeks for CPW to fix it again, I wish to do so myself, so :

1) Which is best, Da Vinci or the other one with the funny name?
2) Can I "fix" my CDA by putting it back to the same as it was before?
3) Which firmware should I be going for to avoid future BRODs?

Cheers,

Kev

1. maybe you are referring to KulanKendi.. that's the one i used to fix my BROD problem.. its good.. only took me like 10-15mins and its over.
2. no idea.
3. 037, no doubt. and wait for the next "stable" firmware.

I always thought that I was the only one with the touchscreen issue (pressing down = pressing middle key)
i had mine repaired last February and repairs took one month due to parts logistics (that's what they said)

Good thing is they reflashed my phone using their server ( I think its EMMA). Its been a month, and its zero BROD.

The only thing now is the for the new firmware (I hope its R3Axxxx) to make phone faster. 031 is still bullsh........t

No you're not the only one mate. On mine though, pressing any button at all = pressing the middle key aswell as pressing the button that you actually pressed.

I hope mine doesn't take a month to repair. I start a new job in 2 weeks so will have to return the phone that I've borrowed!!

I'm not even sure I want my K850 back now TBH, I really, really like the Nokia 6300 that I've got!!

I am fan of SE phones... but now am really fed up of this cr@p.
1. Always FW problems and takes time to fix it
2. For same price I cna get another phone with Wi-Fi.... what the hell...this K850 is top of SE camera phones and no wi-fi module..... really pissing me off.... My next phone WON'T be SE unless it will have good design (as usual for SE), good camera ( 100% SE does it! ), good FW ( SE's is good but always buggy ) and WIFI!

No it seems to be a commmon fault as when i rang Orange after they checked for a diagnosis over the computer all they said was have you tried a master reset if you can, answer yes, right we'll send a replacement out tomoro you can choose when you want ti delivered. So a lot of companies are now just replacing rather than repairing. Then letting SE deal with the repair, the only thing im unusre of now is to debrand now or wait for R3 or the next stable firmware

The gits aren't replacing mine. They've sent it straight back to a repair agent which I'm not happy about.

My mate had the same problem, he's with O2 Online exactly like I am, and not only did they replace his faulty blue & silver phone, they replaced it with a brand new black & silver one!!

Posted by The Barron
@1889

i'm guessin it depends if you get a nice call centre person or a horrible one, and yeah i wondering if i'd get the blue one or the green one as ive seen some Orange replacements be the green one, but mine was the blue, not complaining, because its brand new so im happy

Same thing happened to me: the flash stopped working on my original blue & silver phone , so O2 sent me a refurbished one with a cr@p battery. I complained, so they sent me another refurb. I complained more loudly and they sent me a brand new black & silver one

does anyone know of a program that can backup SE phones and then import to a nokia ... including dictionary?
Getting bored of the random reboots, but I think there's things that can't be fixed with firmware like it being unusably slow when playing music over bluetooth and not having a caller blacklist....and the fact it's looking tatty after a few months.

Not sure how easy it'll be to send back and get something else this far in tho!

Yeh it does. My mate spent 5 minutes on the phone to them sorting it, and he got a door step swap out. I spent about 2 hours on the phone to them and they would not budge from telling me I had to send it back before receiving a replacement. In the end I took it to an O2 store instead. I was told on the phone that they weren't bothering replacing them, they were just swapping them so I would be sent a replacement as soon as my phone was received back. If I'd known the store were going to send it to a repair agent then I wouldn't have bothered going to them.

1. Yes but I re-used DV. Couldn't be bothered getting new app etc.
2/3. Gone for the O2 037 which is a different CDA anyway, will look at restoring once a working fw is out!

Question about the K850 physically. What is the thing on the front of the phone in the top left, Left of the ear speaker. It is like a small transparent hole. What does it do?

Posted by aremaboy
It's a light sensor to automatically adjust the screen's brightness against the surroundings.

Posted by harry20larry
then why are we given the option to change that, there is also no setting to enable auto maode?
