I can confirm that Video Calling works flawless and when when chatting normal the transfer of call of a 3g network to a normal GSM network also works with out problems.
So they got that right!!
Just a few little teething problems then

My gripe with teh phone is that when I want to put the phone on speaker sound, when you press ound on, it doesn't automatically bring on the speaker, don't bother with the menu or at least have the option focussed on the speaker option when it is clicked.
Otherwise, I think the video is far superior to my K800, the flash leaves you exsaperated when drunk...
Pretty sweet phone altogether

It appears that the K850 has the same CPU as the K790 / K800 / K810. However, the amount of RAM memory has been increased.
So excuse my earlier post, but I knew something had changed between hardware platform A1 (K800) and A2 (K850)

Added / changed / removed some bugs in the first post. Thanks to jmcomms & darrengf!

I would not be suprised if the CPU type was the same, but I would be a little suprised if the clock speed was the same. I understand that the new OS will have an overhead, but it seems to be a pretty large one!
Have you got any reference to show this for sure?

Hi,
1. I have experince this issue and the solution is re-flash the phone. Until now the issue has not repeatable.
have you installed any 3rd party games ?
2. haven't try it.
3. Not major issue for me...
thank you...

1) I've now got "Operation Failed" when I try and go to Applications or Games (also means I can't install any new content). Seems that this means the file system is corrupt. Even master reset doesn't work. Sorry, but having had it for less than 48 hours I am NOT going to start messing around trying to reflash the blasted thing!!
2) You can't enter all symbols in the email client for settings, so for Google Mail (where you need to enter recent:username@gmail.com), you must go into notes, enter :, go to copy all, exit, go back to email, open settings and then paste in the data. It seems SE figured you would only need a few characters, but not all usernames are plain letters and numbers.
3) If you're listening to music, and view the camera album, using the zoom buttons (i.e. volume) means it adjusts the volume at the same time it zooms in and out! Cue no music, or eardrum busting music!
4) Not so much a bug, but an oversight; the touch sensitive buttons frequently stop responding, or there's a delay. On some menus you might have something like "Send & Receive", which then changes to "Cancel". It's possible to see that it will do the chosen task, then immediately cancel the process because it's responded twice. This is bad UI design.
I'm sure I'll find more in due course...

I've been experimenting with video playback, and it seems that the media player/video player must be VERY badly coded. It's very neat to auto-rotate, allow easy fwd/rwd, slow motion etc, but it simply can't cope with the bitrates that earlier models (K810, W880, T650...) can.
I re-encoded some video that was previously 308kbps (and worked perfectly on my T650) at 108kps and the sound remained in sync until about 10 minutes in. Now it's gradually slipping, although it's nowhere near as bad as the 5-6 seconds on the 300kps video! 100kbps video isn't particularly good quality either!
If the processor is the same, there's no reason for the video playback to be worse. It's the same resolution screen, although I could understand there being more demand on the processor to drive a 24-bit colour screen. Perhaps SE should have thought of that?!

are you kidding me? lol SE is still milking their old stock of processors.. looks like this is following suite with the p1i... i thought the slugglishness was just the new UI... but it's also cause it needs more processing power...

Don't know if anyone has this problem or has brought it up here already. I was scrolling down my contact list and on one of my contacts, the contact name disappears but the number is shown when the scroller is on that particular contact. I tried different themes and it was still happening. I tried to duplicate it for other contacts but all other contacts were fine. So, I deleted this particular contact and added it again as a new contact and it seems to be okay now!

this has happened to me about 5 - 6 times now, hopefully someone else on o2 can confirm
i hear the beep beep beep noise whilst on a call (as though i got a text) but i dont actually have one. It transpires the last 3 times its happened its been the other person on the call (who has a k850) thats got the text at that exact point in time
very very strange.

I have the O2 branded the phones and not noticed any problems with normal and GSM calls, Also no noticed anything with the phone not coming out of standby?
I know that I havnt had any one else mention this problem to me, So i will keep my eye on this

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet as I can't read through the whole topic at work.
When the screensaver is on and a text comes through (but you miss the initial notification) the screen stays blank with no envelope or anything to let you know you have a text.

This is no bug. It should work like that. You now have to press the volume buttons to see this info.

Hi everyone, I've got a K850i on O2 and I've only had one problem with it and that's when I've connected it to my laptop with Bluetooth and it's asked on the phone whether I want to use the phone as a remote control and the phone restarted. Now I think the people who are moaning or unhappy really need to wait until Sony Ericsson get releasing the updated firmware, at the moment we've got the initial firmware which has undoubtedly got a fair few bugs and issues and could will undoubtedly improved and optimised in future versions. Sony Ericsson generally deliver when it comes to updating firmware and I'm sure we'll all have pleasant smiles on our faces when they come along I'm sure in the not too distant future.

There are lots of different screens in use on SE handsets, including TFD technology that consumes very little power by switching to b/w only mode. This is perfect for standby text, and is why some models have a constant display of the clock.
I guess the 24-bit screen used on the K850i is a real power drain and doesn't have this innovative feature (it's probably TFT) so there's no way you would want a constant on-screen clock.

Before I post it as a bug on the first page, I would like to ask other people's experiences with the Alarms. All I get out of mine is three beeps when an alarm goes off, and not the MP3 file I have selected. Is this the same on all phones or just a weirdness with mine?
Posted by masseur
I've just given this a go and the alarm plays the mp3 correctly.
mine is unbranded btw
Posted by mwarner
Ok, thanks Mass ... must just me mine and/or O2 branded then. Seems rather odd! I am genuinely thinking of sending it back to O2 & getting an N95 instead. I must admit I am very disappointed with this phone - just SE loyalty that is keeping me from sending it back at the moment. If only it were a K800 with a better camera and media player I would be happy.

imo crap firmware and fs all together.

I have just checked the 02 K850i's and at first i got the 3 beeps even though there was a mp3 ring tone listed.
I then released, the mp3 ringtone it listed wasnt on the phone. I had deleted them. So when i choosed a new one, the alarm worked perfect.
Tried it on the others and all work fine.
Hope this helps.

Its just a typical Sony Ericsson phone, released to early so the general public can test the firmware & moan when it goes wrong which is pretty quickly, why do you get the feeling the next firmware will fix a lot of the bugs but introduce some new ones.
Id never buy the first release of a new phone as you just know it will end up going wrong / back at the repair centre / replaced under warranty.

Has anyone noticed that in the music player if you set the equilzer to MANUAL and then STOP the music and CLOSE the Player... Then go back into it it goes back to the previous setting... For example if you have left it on BASS setting...
Cheers
Posted by L10nH34Rt
And another one, though I can't reproduce it... I remember not being able to alter the volume when playing a song in the player...
Posted by jmcomms
1. I've managed to adjust the volume and then see it jump back up to what it was on before!
2. You can zoom in/out on images in the traditional file manager and nearly manage to scroll way off the page. I'm sure you could almost lost the image!
3. Looking at pictures in the file manager is VERY quick, like any other model. In the PSP-style media viewer, it crawls.
4. If you delete a picture in the PSP-style media viewer, it won't actually get rid of it until you scroll left/right. Even then, there's a huge lag.
5. In the PSP-style media player, if you press volume down (with music player), the picture will zoom in. Now you can zoom in and out okay. Press volume up first, and you'll now be adjusting the volume and zooming at the same time.
6. I deleted all the SE RSS feeds, but when the phone crashed later on and rebooted they were all back again!
7. I cannot force the SEU application to reflash my phone, as there's no new firmware yet, so I can't fix the file structure problem that prevents me adding any games or applications, or accessing the ones already present on the phone.

I just noticed it after reading your post. But if you go back to manual, your manual setting stays unaltered.

This may be because the cache wasn't flsushed properly when the phone crashed. Try restarting the phone straight after deleting RSS feeds (before it crashes again) and see if they remain deleted.

try a master reset (may also help with crashing) My K750 was crashing on the first day I got it, but I did a master reset and the problem disappeared.

Well I think i may have a bigger problem with the phone.
Went to be last night and switched of the phone.
This morning and the phone will not switch back on.
All the phone keyboard comes on and then the SE Logo, then the keyboard comes on and thats it. The keyboard then just flashes all the time.
I have removed the battery, (which is full) I have tried using the power cable connected direct, I cant even get to the main boot up screen.
This is not good news indeed.
This is like the problem we had with another SE phone a couple of years back.
I can put th phone on charge and watch the battery go up and down (which it says its virtualy full) but whe you press the power button, the phone will not boot
Very very unhappy person now.
I cant even get on the Se website to do a update as the phone has the latest software. (so no reflash)

Im now on my second K850i and not very happy, when I try to view photos in the media manager the phone reboots and goes black then says searching for network. Same problem on 2 brand new phones so I cant be the only one with this fault. Also I cant use the "best pic" feature as when it takes the photo all I see is a black screen! Will these be corrected by a new firmware release? If so when will it be available? SE shouldnt be allowed to sell phones that dont perform to the stated specification!

Got myself an unbranded K850 from carphonewarehouse today - firmware version R1CA029.

So you guys reckon SE could make hardware changes with the '2nd' k850 batch?
Posted by stevenupton1
Hardware changes? Im hoping its just software that needs updating.
Posted by darrengf
Its not a hardware problem in the phones, but software.
i just dont think that the software released is brilliant for the phone.
And when you come to delete, move things about on the phone, I think he phone becomes confused.
Posted by Duran
i mean the cracking of the backside..dusty screen etc.
Posted by stevenupton1
My phone hasnt any cracking backside or a dusty screen, infact the phone is perfect apart from the annoying reboots that I keep getting when using the media manager and best pic is a joke as it blatently doesnt work.

Just been on a night out with my k850 in my jeans pocket as usual.
i pulled it out and noticed the zero key is starting to come off!!!!
Its litterally falling off. its stuck on with some epoxy glue or something.
I've not hammered this phone either. i only got it last friday!
wtf! i'm not impressed now... its going back to o2 on monday. Come on SE! how many years have u been producing phones?
pissed off..

I've had one reboot so far.
I don't think the K850i CPU is clocked slower than K800i/K810i it's just that SE have tried to give it to much to do at once, which is also why slower benches and video playback,
the phones software is constantly parsing (checking) the accelerometer checking for any phone rotations (alter display if needed), the front sensor (small hole, top left of front display) is constantly being parsed to see if the LCD back-light illumination needs to be altered depending on ambient lighting conditions, plus the fancy media menus which look nice but also steal CPU cycles,
************************************************************
I mentioned a few days ago one way to make videos play slightly smoother is to disable media menu auto rotation,
a better way to to play your 300Kbps videos in through file manager instead,
first select a video then press centre soft-key 'View' then before pressing 'Play'
press left soft-key 'Options' choose landscape, press 'Play
choose another video using left & right on D pad press centre soft-key to play, normally the video plays in sync (unless play/pause is used then sync goes completely to fix this either restarted video or choose another)
************************************************************
I don't think the standby clock is possible on the K850i,
on the K800i/K810i the standby clock was just normal LCD display showing text without any back-light (some people think the back-light is on low all the time but it's not), the only reason the text is visible is due to the light reflecting grey mirrored style background they used (to make it easier to read text in bright light conditions)
the K850i LCD background is black to give deeper blacks and increased contrast in photographs and videos, the downside being that plain text without back-light illumination wouldn't show even if it was enabled.

Don't know if this is only the voda R1CA029
If you compose a normal text message and select a lot of people you want to send it to (I chose 17).
After choosing the recipients and selecting them, the screen will show you how many people you have selected but the icon will show you that you are going to send a MMS.
If you then choose to the edit message the screen will flash MMS and if you try to send the SMS/MMS what ever it is, it will fail.
This is my second K850 on voda it happens to anyone else experience this on other networks/fw?

Mines near enough the same problem on this!
Well ive been using the Animations since the K750i, and they work fine with a normal text, but on the K850i (Voda) when i insert a animation into the SMS it comes up MMS and obviously am not going to pay for sending it! Was wondering why it does that!?

I am sorry to say that I have rung up O2 and arranged for my phone to be sent back. This is a great shame as I have had all major SE platform releases since the T610 (and written firmware threads for them all).
To be honest the K850 is just not good enough for 1.5 years worth of development effort - I use my phone for five major things:
1. Waking me up in the morning. My K850's alarm just doesn't work properly, only beeping three times rather than playing the selected MP3. It's just too risky if I need to get up at 4am to catch a flight, which is quite a regular occurance for me.
2. Listening to audio books & music. The lack of any play/pause either on the phone itself or through the remote control of my HPM-82 means that I need to unlock the phone & navigate through the menus just to gain access to the start/stop features, which is a pain.
3. Controlling my PC via Bluetooth, which plays videos through the TV. The left mouse button is allocated to the touch screen buttons which means it is barely responsive enough to do a double click, which is a major annoyance.
4. Sending text messages. The keyboard, and particularly the D-Pad, is much worse than the K800, meaning that texts take longer to write and accuracy is worse.
5. Taking photos. The sync issue between the shutter and the flash means that most night shots simply don't come out. I just hope this is a software issue, but I am not prepared to take this chance & be stuck with the phone for the next year.
So ... looks like the end of me using this generation's platform. Let's just hope that the next gen platform is up to scratch & will warrant me purchasing another SE phone. In the meantime I will be waiting for the N95 8GB and keeping hold of the excellent K800 until it's release.

I'm also tempted to return my K850i to CPW tomorrow.
I simply cannot believe the bugs and how slow the UI runs in comparison to a K800. There is no guarantee that they'll be fixed either and to be honest I don't fancy being lumbered with this phone unless I get a solid guarantee that these problems will be fixed.
SE really need to make some sort of statement on these issues and fast.
Posted by ashyak36
i have all the bugs mentioned here accept one. the HPM-82 headset works on my k850i so i cant understand why it wouldnt work on all of the other :S im sure theyll sort these bugs out.
how long do you think new software will take to be released?

Something else give a slight speed-up on menus and general feel of the phone , choose a basic theme like Clarity and/or make sure you have a static backdrop picture instead of an animated one.
******************************************************
mwarner,
really sorry to hear you're sending your phone back, your input and time in maintaining your firmware threads has always been of great help over the past years,
I also came very close to sending mine back, even to the point of carefully packing everything back up all ready to return, then thought I'd sleep on it (not literally!
I personally feel they'll tweak the firmware for extra video and menu speed,
there really seems nothing else available at the moment in the way of SE phones,
if only they had given the W910 a 5 megapixel camera it would have been near perfect with it's already larger screen, good looks & better keypad than K850i,
I really feel they'd sell more phones if they just created one perfect phone with everything, instead of two half phones (one for entertainment and one for photography) as they do at the moment making people choose one path or the other instead of getting the best of both worlds.

Well im just waiting for my replacement.
This is the first phone ever I have had to send back to SE due to this problem and i feel very sad.
The K800 and the k810 were both gr8 phones. ( I prefer the K810 over the K800) but thats just me.
I never had a prob with the K810 at all. It was solid performer.
However I have never seen so many complaints and upset over the k850i. It seems that 1.5 years SE are worse and not better, What has gone wrong. Its a real real shame.
Well I get another month to play with the k850i when i get me new one and if it doesnt get better, its going back. First time ever.
I still like the phone and I do like the joypad and keys, I dont have any problems using them. I dont like tho is the ammount of bugs, You would have thought that SE would have a decent platform by now, they have had long enough at the job.
I have been reading lots of other forums and so far i struugle to find any one to rave about it. Inface i struggle to find any one with nice words which is a shame.
the phone is a flagship model that is all singing and all dancing, However it cant do either very good. It has def lost its steps!!
1 unhappy k850 user.
