Mine is a 'sim free' version by the way.
@jazzyc, The version you have on the phone is the one with lots of issues. However at present there is no way of updating the software to R1CA037, You will just have to be patient at the moment, sorry.

You are a star !!
I am on the point tomorrow of taking my 2nd one back to try and order a 3rd... contact syncing is useless on this one and I cannot enter any appointments into my calendar.
1st one was fine in this respect.
Posted by darrengf
have you tried resetting the phone?
Posted by joemax
No as I don't want to loose all the apps, themes and sounds etc that came pre-installed. Only some can be copied as most are protected.
Running a Mac so SESU won't help me out.
Unless there is another way
Posted by darrengf
SEUS wont help at the moment
However take a look at this for the most generic pics etc

Thanks.
I think I'll get it changed again by CPW and see if its any better. Shame as this 2nd one has a screen thats not coming off nor dust in the lens...

Besides fixing the file structure and the flash problem, the other problems (of which there are many) are all still present on the revised firmware.
I expect this is why the revision is so minor. I am looking forward to a proper update, like R2A or something!
Posted by Sebby
I agree. R1CA037 sounds like an insignificant update. There are several major software issues that need resolving.

You can check it via your phone update service option at Settings, it's named Software version.
Posted by jazzyc
if there are 2 versions of software out there at the moment then why cant we update to the latest one?
Posted by darrengf
The Reason why you currently cant update is due to the fact the there isnt any firmwares on the SE website, So when you connected you phone does beleive that you already have the latest firmware. Sorry

Now I have just found out a little more info regarding the K850i firmware.
There was supposed to be a firmware release today 9.11.07 on the SEUS at 9.00am, however that seems to have now been delayed, currenlty not sure why and when i spoke to the service center, they were also unsure why but was told that it hasnt now been put on there.
The firmware release i was told wasnt a major release, just a release to resolve several issues for the time being.
Now when i get more info or can find more out i will let you know. The info is patchy at the moment so its not easy to find out.
** However it might be worth a try to see if the SEUS has a new version on there ** You never know !!
Posted by AntonyS
I'm not quite sure what difference this makes, but now when I go to update service, instead of getting the usual 'you have the latest firmware' message, I'm getting a new one, 'unable to download update'.
Edit: OK nevermind, it's gone back to saying I have the latest version now. I've had the phone for a few weeks and thought it was great but the bugs are really starting to shine through now:
Resetting itself randomly quite a lot.
Displaying an 'operation failed' message when trying to access messages (only solved by a master reset).
Nothing that's preventing me using the phone, but it is a real pain.

Darren (or anybody else infact), do you know if CPW will replace my K850i as it has a slightly loose screen and creaky battery cover. I'm not *that* bothered but if I can I'd get it replaced.
Posted by SE-Naz
@killsta
If its within 28 days I would suggest getting it changed as its a fault if you are having problems with the screen area.
Cheers

I just picked up my 3rd K850 from CPW.
They have never questioned doing the change and each time have agreed that the phones were substandard... YMMV of course.
This 3rd one works great syncing address book and calendar now like the 1st one did. Front and back plastics are all firmly in place (1st one had a loose screen top left corner and lens dust).
Fingers crossed it really is 3rd time lucky.
SW is now at 1200-4400 R1CA037 071012 so is later than the 029 I had on the 1st two phones.

CPW (or any other retailer/dealer) probably won't officially admit to any problems but they must be noticing SERIOUS problems if they're swapping them over so readily.
The flash problem might take a while to notice by the average customer because people will think (or be told) that they're not holding the phone correctly - and not be on forums like this to see that it isn't just about covering the sensor. Eventually, everyone will realise the phone simply doesn't work as designed.
Of course, the minor revision that might be available to all very soon, does fix this problem and that's a significant step forward.

Not necessarily - CPW have a policy of 28-day faulty exchange and it's also your statutory right under consumer law. It's standard practice for any new handset that goes wrong in the first four weeks from purchase.

Loso, agree K800 was a damn fine phone. Built like a very strong thing and stable.
Shame the joystick was so crap and prone to failing.

The back of mine is lose now. The issue is that these are made in China for probably close to nothing. Let's hope my third is better...

back of mine is loose too at both sides, but im not too worried about this, rather the firmware be fixed. if you look inside the phone, under the cover, you can see why it comes loose, not really going to change with a different phone.

well i've been with 2 phones and and about the loosing part it will happen to the phone sooner or later, it's just bad quality manufacturing.

What I meant is that if you asked them if the K850i was a disaster with loads coming back, they probably wouldn't admit it officially. They wouldn't want to annoy their supplier (SE) and will use the standard-customer service get out; "This is the first one we've seen with this problem".

I wouldnt worry about worrying SE at this time, I can tell you that SE are seriously worried them selves.
The phone is being returned by droves by the public with variuos of faults.
Like not switching on, Java problems, Camera problems and so on.
R1CA037 seems to have only been released when you receive a brand new phone, This seems to have stopped the main booting problems (Java script error)
SE are working on a release for the general public to update the K850i, However the software release will not be released to fix everything first, the firmware I would beleive will be there to stop the phones being returned to SE when they dont boot up, java and possibe camera issue.
The SE Call center takes more and more complaints over the K850i every day, more that any other Phone.
There hasnt been an fantastic review of the phone by magazines etc yet, and there is very little publicity of the phone at present too.
I still luv mine altho the 2nd one i have. However the 2nd one even though it has the same software feels totaly different to my old one.
On all my phones as they are sim free I activate the Automatic Lock code so when i place another sim card in it asks for the code i put onto the phone.
My 1st phone would always show the phone lock code like it needed to be entered everytime but would then just flash of in a second.
However my 2nd phone doesnt do that at all. Very stange in deed
And today (11.11.07) my phone became the next one to be returned due to booting problems. Oh well, 3rd time luck as they say

If you have already done a master reset of the phone, then im sorry to say that its over for the phone.
Back to SE it goes. The software script on your phone sounds like its failing and will shortly fail all together prob.
The only way to fix it is the latest firmware or relashing the phone and seeing that neither of them are yet available to the public then the only soloution is back to SE or your service provider for a replacement sorry.

My one is from O2 UK....
I'm just inside the first month by 1 day so they are arranging delivery for a new one and to collect the old one at same time! It's a shame they can't just flash it with new firmwear, I would be happy with that if it worked!
Oh well, here comes a brand spanking new one on Tuesday!

But I have brought lots of CPW in the past and have friends working there so I know the drill.
ALso they will offer 28 days if the phone is faulty... after that period they will offer to fix the phone...

They've got nothing to lose by being honest about a deficient handset. I used to work for CPW and we never had a problem telling it like it was - don't patronise your customers. There isn't anything to gain by pretending handsets aren't faulty. It's also worth noting that the size and resilience of CPW's business far outstretching any of the other mobile retailers means it can afford to take the hit on some initial faulty returns, rather than sacrifice long-term customer satisfaction.

It doesn't really affect them anyway as they get replacements from SE!

Had my K850i replaced at CPW today no probs, my old had a wobbly screen and creaky battery cover.
New one seems alot better
Posted by Sebby
All 3 replacements I've had have been well built compared with the first, but I still have 2 very annoying issues.
1. The phone crashes in standby.
2. I keep seeing "emergency calls only", even when in a full signal area.
I'm wondering if my SIM card might be to blame.

sounds sim related to me. Exactly the same happens to me if i remove the SIM card from the K850i and then put it back in again with the phone still switched on - not that you should be able to do that of course..

Well people, Mine went faulty this morning, Same as before. Refuses to start up just flashing at me.
Not bad i suppose,
1st phone lasted from 15th Oct to 20th Oct (5 Days) R1CA029
2nd Phone lasted from 23rd Oct to 11th Nov (18 Days) R1CA029 07W41
(No hardware issues just software on both phones)
3rd one should be with me sometime next week, O2 are waiting new stock of the phone, so im hoping that the phone will have some new software, or this one will probaly fail further down the line if not.
Oh well back to my trust W300i again, thats been dropped, dropped in red wine and it still works, Would the K850i do this !!

I just spoke to T-Mobile to get a new SIM, but they want to charge me £10! Needless to say an email has been sent to complaints...
@darrengf
How do you find out the build week?
Posted by darrengf
Ok the firt pic shows you where the info is, you need a pin of some sort to pull the plastic out of the phone. there is a sticker on the plastic that tells you everything about the phone. like serial no, week no etc
1st pic
2nd pic
The pics were taken with a Sony Cyber shot camera W5

Many thanks. I wish I'd have known this before so I could see the week of each of my 4 handsets!
My current one is 07W42. Are we in week 43 now?
Posted by darrengf
@Sebby
If your sim card is faulty then you are entiteled to a free one.
You need to say to T-mobile that the sim card is faulty, it doesnt pick up a signal when there is one, and if you tell them that your phone keeps asking for a sim card so you then have to take your battery out and remove the sim card and then replace etc, they should send you a new one with out any problems.
What is the software version of your handset? Also is the handset your on T-Mobile? T-mobile software etc?
Today is the last day of week 45
12.11.07 is begining of week 46

@darrengf
Apparently it's in the terms and conditions that a replacement SIM is chargeable, even if faulty (i.e. not caused by the user). But I've emailed complaints now, so I'll be getting one free anyway.
In the meantime, I've given my current one a clean with some alcohol, but I'm sceptical that there's anything wrong with it anyway... But could 4 handsets all exhibit this same issue, when I don't think anyone else has mentioned the emergency calls only issue? I doubt it.
The handset is SIM-free as I upgraded at CPW. The firmware has been R1CA029 on all of them.
Clearly the build issues still aren't completely sorted; though this one feels very solid in comparison with my first, there is an issue with the LEDs (the bottom right is 'lazy' and some are brighter than others). This is something I'd probably live with, but if the phone keeps crashing whilst in standby, I'm going to have to get it replaced anyway. What's worrying is I'm rapidly nearing my 28 days no quibble exchange period, so unless I can get on in the next week that is perfect in terms of hardware, I'm going to have to (reluctantly) send it for repair. It has crossed my mind whether I should get a new phone and just sell it straight away, but the fact that I really like this phone - and that there's not a lot else on the market that catches my eye - puts me off. I'm an SE man through and through!
I'm thinking of trying to get to a big CPW this week, such as Oxford Street, in the hope that they'll have even newer stock than my week 42 build. Any suggestions?
Posted by darrengf
@Sebby
Im also a SE man through and through and i know that ill stick with them.
Its just a shame that SE seems to have gone down the pan in the last 3 months with build quality issues, whats going wrong with them.
Either they have changed the man at the top, or they are looking for cheaper phone materials, to be honest i think it back fire what ever they have done. Sending phones back in droves isnt good for them and people just putting problem and problem on the net isnt good either.
You should df take it back if its fault and even if they dont have stock, you should be able to tell them that you still came down to tell them and you were asked to call back? I would think tho they will have stock. I know all our stores here do, they also have new stock of the phone so you should get one now with the new firmware that se are placing on the handset at the moment. R1CA037.
Let me know how you get on. Good luck
Posted by Sebby
@darrengf
I was hoping to find that the two handsets I got yesterday (!) had R1CA037, indicating that they were very late builds, but no such luck.
I think like most manufacturers these days, it's largely about profit, and so having products made in China is often the answer. They obviously know about the build issues and China is obviously capable of better build quality, as the last 3 handsets have demonstrated. They really are solid compared with my first. It's just a shame that, given the testing that they must have taken place, this wasn't raised and sorted prior to launch. It does make you wonder what sort of testing they do, as many of the problems that are being discussed here were evident within hours of owning the thing!
Anyway, I shall let you know how I get on.
Posted by darrengf
@Sebby I completely agree with the build quality, Ive seen some K850 that look very poorly made, but i have to say that the 2x o2 k850i are fine in deed, altho the last one had a creaky top part but that didnt bother me.
I will just wait to see what i get next week my self, hoping something that will last a little longer than i have been used to.
At least with the software i use, i just connect the phone to the pc and click restore and thats it. Everything is back on the phone in no time. Well about 4 mins any way.
Posted by Sebby
@darrengf
Last post, I promise.
What I do is just ensure everything is on the memory card, which is easy as I don't use the phone memory. There's an option to save the phonebook to the memory card too. Then when I get a new handset, I just ask if I can swap the cards, which they're always happy to allow. Then I just restore my numbers from the member card, and voila.
