I have R1CA029 too and mine shows 'E' (always) over the signal bars and '3G' when available.

@Mike Graham What Network do you use your K850i on?
@Eva-m00, This firmware fix was to only resolve the camera issue and stop most of the people sending the phone back, I wouldnt think it will be released to th General public for a while or at all, you may find that a new firmware may be released this month, (Quite a big one?) Just trying to fin out about it.
@Duran, I dont think the phone is bulky at all or that the keys are not nice. The phone is simular size to the K800 and the keys are in the correct place. And the joy pad is fantastic, Much better than the joystick

darrengf: What does the new firmware do for the camera? Does it just sort out the out-of-sync flash and the corrupting of the memory card?
Personally, I'd rather wait another few weeks for a firmware that has most of the problems sorted than get a half-assed attempt now. Still, I'm not happy that a company would ship such a shockingly unfinished product. Even Apple have done better than this with their iPod firmware (which on the video shipped with absolutely awful sound quality..)

It's not an E it's a G meaning Gprs. In older phones it was a light blue (cyan) upside down triangle.

The K850i Does have E (Edge)
I get both G and E (When in a Edge area) in the UK.
No Network currenlty supports Edge in greece and as far as im aware they have no plans to either at present.
The Uk networks support edge are O2 (Still in progress), Orange and T-Mobile.
If People would like list of the networks supporting edge or if they want to let me know what network there on and in which country then let me know.

I've now put my Orange card in the K850i, along with the 4GB M2, and it's gone back to showing just 3G. I'm therefore guessing it did show H before too, had I put another SIM card in.
Now, Orange DOES have HSDPA, and I've used it at home before. So, either it's been disabled or it's a different implementation to that of Vodafone (Ericsson equipment I believe). I'm not sure what other explanation there is for never seeing H with an Orange SIM card in the phone.
Of course, it's also possible that my Orange SIM isn't set up for HSDPA (just as you now have to have Web 'n' Walk max on T-Mobile to use it) anymore. I'll be rather upset if that is the case, as I wasn't aware that Orange might be doing that.

Update: checked new phone with Bluetooth headset. No audio problems except for when it's connected to Bluetooth watch, where it still takes 9-10 seconds before the audio stops stuttering.
During this time, the phone is sending the (tiny amount of) text to watch to display. Of course, the W880i and T650i can do this without affecting the audio at all.
If you play music with the old-style file manager, it's instant (literally, no delay to play audio and no stuttering) but it doesn't show the text. Disable connection to watch and the new media player is fine.
So, what have they done in the code to make it so slow? It also corrupts some text too (it's not bold text on the watch screen either) as if it's not communicating properly.
This is an annoying bug that I bet SE haven't seen (I did mention it in my report though) as few people will have the Bluetooth watch. Ironic, as it's the first SE (like the W910i) that actually has a dedicated watch icon at the top of the screen!

"its gone back to showing just 3G"
Where I'm at, I'm happy to having it on edge, which is a lot faster then gsm which is what I got with my k800. he he he....
btw, with your 4gb m2 card, do you think it is much slower than a 1gb m1 card?

Thats what I thought until I decided to take a closer look and it is an 'E'. I see the same 'E' on my W810i above the signal bars too. I am beginning to think it does support EDGE too.
Posted by darrengf
The w810 does support edge. If you have a blue triangle above the signal bar then the phone only supports gprs. If it has a letter then the phone support either edge or gprs. Hope this helps.

Today I had my first problem with my 1 month old k850. When I came home and picked it up from my pocket the display was all black and the lights of the keypad light. Had to take out the battery...
Posted by Sebby
@Leks
I had that today (my K850 was replaced yesterday). Hopefully it's not a hardware fault as I cannot be bothered to change it again, and this one - touch wood - seems perfect, other than the software issues.

I'd doubt that. I don't know much about Vodafone, but I'd assume they're similar to Orange/T-Mobile where different countries have the company represented individually..?

T-Mobile support HSDPA on both WnW Plus and WnW Max. It used to be on all of them but unfortunately they've tightened up the criteria now (although still a good value plan). I upgraded from WnW to WnW Plus and noticed a definite speed increase with on-mobile browsing - I also get speeds of around 1Mbps when using it as a modem so I'm definitely on HSDPA, but still no change from 3G to H. Not sure if it's something (hopefully) that can be fixed in the SE FW or if it's to do with the equipment at T-Mobile's end.
Cheers
Alan
PS - noticed today it was difficult to get the phone to switch back from 2G to 3G connection - seems that the background download of RSS feeds/e-mail was locking it to the current signal and doing a network search would just show 'no networks available'. After the globe icon stopped 'pulsing' I was able to do a search and connect to T-Mob 3G.

If I've understood correctly, the new firmware (which isn't yet available on the SEUS) actually has different letters to indicate which type you are connected to, whereas the original firmware says "3G" regardless.
Posted by kotsianis7
I have 2 SIM cards:one for Vodafone GR and one for Wind GR.Although both networks support HSDPA,only in Vodafone i get the H symbol in most regions and sometimes i get the 3G symbol when HSDPA is out of coverage. In Wind GR i get 3G constantly regardless the presence of HSDPA technology...So,it might be a network issue.Maybe(in my case) Vodafone sends different signals for 3G and HSDPA whereas Wind sends the same signal(3G for both HSDPA/3G).I have R1CA029,mediterranean CDA.

Hi
Heres my 10 pence worth.
i'm on firmware R1CA029 on 02 and i've had the 3G, H and E symbols all come up in different places...But not when at home..
My flash seems to sync perfectly...only probs ive had is the shutter not opening on the cam... Switch it off and on again and its fine.
Other than that i think its a great phone. Works flawlessly with the "Blue & me" system in my Fiat too.

It's the MBW-150 (Walkman Edition). If you connect the watch AFTER connecting the handsfree, it doesn't always stutter (so I suspect there's some code to allow the use of both, but it's not written very well). The text is still a bit odd looking though (only for track ID, as Caller ID works fine with strong bold text).
I'm sure it can and will be fixed, considering this isn't an issue on other models using earlier Walkman/Media Player software.

I would need to do a speed test, but I'm sure I am using HSDPA on Orange. I therefore believe it's a network thing (Vodafone sending information to identify it's HSDPA that other networks aren't).
There's a lot of diffferent infrastructure out there, and we all know how previous SE/Ericsson handsets have had problems with some Nokia switching equipment (now Nokia Siemens) so I guess we shouldn't be surprised.
Anyway, it means the old (first) firmware will sometimes show H, depending on the network you are on.
Doesn't Vodafone use Ericsson switching equipment?

This explains alot!!! Had just returned home to UK on flight into Heathrow, when I turned my phone on it had a 'H' instead of '3G' and I was very confused!!!

Also just noticed a really annoying bug!!!
When you are reviewing your photos using the camera review thing (with the slide switch) it works great untill you have looked at a photo to long and the screen goes drak (screen saver!) but you can't make the screen come back unles you turn the camera review off and start again!!!
Really annoying!
Anyone else found this???
Also...
My K850 won't charge up when in USB mode and connected to the PC! Any ideas???

I noticed another little bug yesterday in the media player. When you start and stop a song in rapid succession, the audio crackles! Not what I would expect from a good phone. Theres another one for the list, on the old firmware.
Posted by martinbickley
I'm still on the first firmware and my phone shows H symbol when I'm in Stockport.
I don't think it has anything to do with the firmware update.

i just wanted to know,
do you lot reckon the "operation failed" problem regarding texts/games and application menu's, so many people have experiencing will be fixed once you install the new firmware??? whenever that gets released.
i really do not want to send my phone back as i have no other orange phone(new phone, on new monthly tariff) and thus will not be contactable, which will piss my manager of severely, or do i have to just bite the bullet and just do it?

I find that it's a problem with the standby part of it cos when you use the camera on/off button to turn it off the picture returns momoteraly before being turned off!!!
I say wait for new firmware if your boss will kill you!

Replacement handset (unbranded on CPW O2) has just packed up with the same fault as the first one. Turned it on and it refused to boot - keypad lights up, screen comes on once, and then the keypad just powers on and off, indefinitely, every few seconds. (Incidentally this is the same behaviour it exhibits when you first plug in the charger when the phone is off, but repeated - I'm wondering if there's a clue there in somewhere as to what's causing it.)
This seems to be the most extreme kind of corruption people are experiencing. I like this phone overall - just a shame it's so prone to going wrong at the moment. Come on SE - get that firmware out!
Oh well, back to Carphone Warehouse it goes...

There is information missing about this bug:
"On some phones, the volume keys do not respond, requiring a reboot to restore functionaility."
Volume keys stop functioning if you preview pictures while the music is playing. They do zoom in and out but volume changing is disabled and reboot is required.

Further to my post above, I thought I would try flashing my corrupted, non-booting phone with the SEUS tonight in case the new firmware had been released.
You know when you install SEUS on a fresh PC and while holding down the "C" button as requested, it installs the flash device? Well I've just done this and after a few moments of installing flash drivers, the K850 actually turned on, in mass storage mode, and the PC started installing normal drivers for it too. It's still going as we speak.
At least I know my phone is alive, somehow. I'm going to persevere and see if there's some way to boot it up using this method. Watch this space...

yet another "feature" of the K850i ... mine just decided to give me the
operation failed message. all i did was send a plain text message !!!
'cmon sony sort out the firmware - please ;-(

@dualist Mine did the same as well.
The problem is not with the boot system of the phone but the software corrution on how the phone activates items when switched on. A Software rebuild will fix the fault, but thats not to say it wont happen again.

Ok I have been doing some research regarding some of the issues regarding the K850i.
However some of the issues are not just related to the K850i.
The problem is also related to any JP-8 Phones
K850, V640, W910 and Z750.
All of the above phones share the same basic firmware with modifications to the specific phone.
Now the main issues are all relating to Java and how the phone handles and installs java.
The Information below is what i have been able to clarify and find so far.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**The AMS (Application Management System) database file storing the information about all installed applications has or can be become corrupt. This results in non accessible applications and that it is not possible to install any new applications.
**The only solution to get the device working properly again is by reflashing the file system on the phone and get the latest software version. Please contact your service center for help.
**The affected software versions where this problem may occur are all versions prior to R1CA037. Please make sure you get R1CA037 or later flashed on your phone by the service center.
**There is an update coming really soon that addresses some frequently encountered problems
**
Is the software version R1CA037 allready available for the public?
Currenty No
Also service centers currently dont have R1CA037 at present, there seems to be some confusion.
**
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now If your phone already has version R1CA037, then you shouldnt encounter any problems with the phones java system at all.
For the rest of us that have R1CA029, At the moment its a waiting game, However we may find that the version that is released will be a more major firmware update?
However at present there is still no set date of the next general release for the following 4 phones.
Just found this which now may help people.
**Now the debranding has started for the K850i
v0.914006/UNI
SEMC A2 phones support added.
currently supported : flashing, gdfs read/write, scripting, userlock
RED,BROWN phone domains supported.
only DCU60 interface supported.
k850 r1ca029
k850 r1ca037
v640 r1ca029
v640 r1ca037
w910 r1ca029
w910 r1ca037
z750 r1ca029
z750 r1ca031
Now im strugling to locate the software to do this, and ive never done this my self using SE tool. As I use Wotan.
If i find any more out i will let you know.

I think my phone has lots of bugs on it.
Is this a really old version?
Also when i try the update service it says there is no update available!
Mine is a 'sim free' version by the way.
