Intesting... Flashed my K850i with Davinci using my Windows Vista and all worked ok... It lasted about 20 min..
Sorry for that... really bad..

Grrrr, charged my phone last night and have not used it for calls or texts (only the alarm this morning) and its already at 78%. Useless!
I have no doubt SE will sort this out in the next firmware, they do usually get the major bugs sorted (as was pointed out a few posts back regarding the K700i battery issue) but it is frustrating using the phone in the mean time.
Ordered my W960i 10 minutes ago so I should get that tomorrow. I'll only be using my K850i when I go out to take pictures, the rest of the time I can use the W960i.

Hi, guys.
I read every of your posts, but I don't write because till now I didn't have to tell you anything.
But now I have a big problem: since yesterday the camera shutter doesn't open at all. I tried about 50 times and nothing happens. The camera is turned on on the display but only black picture....
Please don't advice me to reflash the phone because for other reasons i did that two times today through davinci

This happened to my phone within the first 2 weeks of me getting the phone.
I had to send it back and get a new one.
Im not sure if there is a fix out there, but o2 just sent me a new phone.
Obviously the phone is within the 12 months warranty so you should be able to get a new one or get it fixed.

Yes, I have a 2 year warranty but the terms are not very good. I mean I have to wait 30 days if I take the phone to the service... or if they know about the problem and just give me another phone...
Posted by spanner5351
They do know about this, it is a very common fault with the first K850 phones.
Argue your case if they try to not give you a new phone immediatly.

When I had 037 I could easily get 5 days out of it, which isn't too bad. I haven't used my phone since my last charge on Wednesday night, I didn't let it charge fully so I don't think it got to 100% cause when I checked it the following morning it was at 75%, it is now at 61%. That'd be pretty reasonable if that was the consumption when I was using it.
I honestly don't know what usage habits you have but I could Never dream of 5 days on my K850 (037 f/w). I've only had the phone for 2 weeks and so far IF I get 40 hours of it I'm happy. Then again I spend about an hour/day on the phone, and browse the web with the RSS feeds quite a bit.
What really helped me extend my battery life on my HTC TyTN was a little applet that switch 3G OFF so that the phone worked on GPRS/EDGE. This was VERY convenient because I didn't really need high speed until I was streaming video or something, all in all it added 15-20 hours of usage on the HTC. I wonder if there is such an applet or way to do it on the Sony Ericsson phones...

guess it isnt too bad that i dont ave R038 yet (unbranned) after reading all the battery problems.
Lets gogo major JAN update!
Posted by klarho
Speaked with a guy at my local BRAND service center. He called to the central technicians for me, and they said that the major update were in testing with my brand (tre), and it was only 1-2 weeks away. Sounds kinda promising.
Posted by Krzysiecw
I`ve talked to SE call center in poland and they said that the new firmware should be on SEUS 20.01.2008 I hope they are righ.

its nothing to look forward to............stay with 037....much better

I have noticed that battery life is halfed (roughly) if you have 3G mode switched on...
I am on three, but seem to get signal with it turned off, it presumably ports onto a standard network. But I am at 68% today with reasonable useage. Normally I would be about 25%
Posted by sverkalo
From what it seems I would stay with 37. Many problems have been reported.

can u plz explain why?
is there no improvement in the latest firmware R1DA038?
mine is R1CA037 and i daily check for the update.
Posted by alanjrobertson
Personally I've noticed a big improvement with 038 vs 037 - no random reboots, no crashes when accessing Gmail, etc.
I haven't noticed any particular change in battery life but have been in a fairly good reception area.
Still looking forward to the 'big' update this month!

How can we be sure that we will have a big fix?
Posted by goldenface
Its been known for a while that there is new FW arriving in January.
The new fw will also fix some of the compatibility issues the K850i has with some of the recently launched accessories - e.g the MBS-100.
Posted by plankgatan
so 038 is not a major (ordinary firmware) uppdate ??????????

I fond imo big error, when i plug in te microSD card to k850 and go to the phone through usb [in mode 'phone'] I see:
- Phone Memory
&
- Memory stick [TM] (!)
but why, imo this is very confusing (I have 2 cards: microSD, M2 and both contain different files)

lolz guess SE still want to advertise memory stick EVEN when inserted into the phone itself~~ haha

Does anyone know how the number of the firmware corresponds to the importance in the timeline?? If I were the person namig each firmware I'd break it down something like the following....
e.g. R1CA029
R1 - This would be increased in index to R2 at the biggest of updates, then to R3 after etc etc. We're still on R1 which to me would indicate we've had a major update yet.
CA - This would be for when a driver has changed, but there are still some parts of the firmware still the same from the last major update e.g. the cam driver update changed this to DA on the K850
029 - this is for the smallest changes or emergency changes. like the change from 029 to 037, which fixed a few important java errors but nothing like the cam driver or the java SW version.
All of this is just how I've interpretted it, I could be wrong obviously. I'd expect the the major firmware update to be an R2????? and sometime this month. It just feels like there's still something missing.
Can anybody with insider knowledge help us out here?

@ plankgatan
So you tell us that the big talked-about upcoming january firmware update is equal to 038 and nothing to look forward to? correct me if i'm wrong.

It is pretty safe. I updated my K800i twice by FOTA and it worked fine. Once they released the firmware first on FOTA and after some time on SEUS. So I updated via FOTA. Be aware that you will be charged by your network provider for the data transfer.

thnks ..^^
updated.... thru FOTA...
fast ..replaces only few files.... instead of SEUS the whole thing ...
now my firmware is

hello,
I've install the "generic" firmware "cutomize CH/blue" from Davinci, and it's works fine
but when I check the upgrade from the phone or the update service tool from the PC it's say it's the last build ... how could I update to R1DA038 except pay a new 10€ to davinci ???
Posted by DCUK7
@ marciton
R1DA038 is only available for network branded handsets. Currently R1CA037 is the latest firmware for generic handsets.
Apparently there will be a newer firmware within a couple of weeks so hang tight for that before you pay for another Davinci credit.

Potentially stupid question - how do I know if my phone is branded or not? I mean I'd expect to see some branding bacgrounds and possibly customized internet access out of the box, but mine didn't have any of those. The box that it came in has TIM on it which I can only assume is a provider and my firmware is as follows:
R1CA037
prgg12004404_CHINA_SO R1CA037
EROM: 200-4341
Is there anywhere in the firmware that I can determine if it's branded?
Thanks
Posted by vegetaleb
If it's branded the main menu icons are changed ,so just compare menu icons of K850 you have seen on the web and yours, also if it's branded the start-up animation is not the SE one(virgin,orange,voda...animated gifs)
Anyway as it seems I have a APAC FW (many european lang+many asiatic ones) SEUS releases FW updates to this version at the same time as European lang packs or we have to wait a couple of days/weeks more?
It's rumored that on the 20th of this month the ''big'' FW will be released

Go into the Main eng menu using the arrow key code and then go into, Service info, Software info and in there you will what software you have.
Come down to where it says Customization and this is where you get the info from
mine is 1201-7336 R5A, Which tells me its o2-uk.
If you can let me know I will let you know what yours is

A Couple of people have been asking me to Jbenchmark my phone as i currently have R1DA038 firmware.
I have done this and placed the info into a graph for every one, I have also jbenchamarked my SE w300i and Mototola V545. I will try to do more over the next couple of days, but if any of you have yours and want to pm me your results, I will put them on the spreadsheet.
Hope this helps

I'll do my K800 and W800 and send you the results but I don't how to benchmark test. Could you give me a nudge in the right direction?

I have an unbranded phone, I am from France and I have no update, I am still in 037 and I have no problems with this phone, I have a 2GB sandisk M2 and I have no problem with it too.
I wait for the update only in order to increase the general speed of the phone and the speed when I use some soft with it.
(sorry if my english is bad, I am from France)

Not a problem
You need to go to http://www.jbenchmark.com
You can register for free if you want to post the results back to them, however you can download the software for free as well
For the testing you need
JBenchmark 1.0
JB 2.0
JB 3D
Good Luck, have fun

Your english is good!
Well i have an unbranded phone too(i live in Sweden) and i guess we have to wait at least two more weeks. I really hope it's a major update that fixes/betters camera drivers, the damn java problem, DOESN*T mess up the battery life(rather improve it) and the music player. So i hope this new firmware update isn't like the one that folks that have branded phones has gotten.

Normaly we won't have access to the 038 update, but we will directly have the major update.
On the non official SE blog, we can see that the major update is released since de 12 january to the 20 in north europe.
Wait and see.

@nocky
You need to buy 10 credits for 10€.
I know, the price table is a bit strange because there's no cross at "Unlock / DB2020".
But I tried it myself and succeeded, pay 10 euros and you're done:)

yeh i found the table confusing too, it doesnt say debranding on the table it must come under flashing.

@Tervel
im just wondering where you got your phone from? in the usa, or some where else?
you said earlier it came in a TIM branded box? But your customization is APAC/ANZ (australia, asia (i think some parts) and new zealand) so i find it very strange to have come in a TIM branded box, since TIM phones dont usually come from that region........
does your phone have any TIM shutdown or startup screens, or menu icons? any physical branding on the phone?
