Accessing Firmware Information
To find out which firmware revision your phone currently has installed, select Menu > Settings > General > Update service > Software version. For more detailed software versioning information, perform the following:
>*<<*<*
Where < and > represents clicking the D-Pad left and right keys respectively.
In addition to the software information available, further information about the phone (Serial number, Build Year and Week number) is available via a pull out card. See the following post for photos showing how to access this card.
Sony Ericsson Update Service
The firmware of the K850 can be upgraded either over the air by selecting Settings / Update Service / Search for update or via the more traditional (and potentially cheaper) method of the Sony Ericsson Update Service. In order to use SEUS you will need to have internet access (preferably Broadband) and attach your phone to your PC via the supplied USB cable.
If you run into problems, you may wish to download and install Sun's Java Runtime Environment separately.
If the firmware update fails part way through, retry the SEUS. If the update consistently fails you will need to perform a Master Reset on your phone. It is likely that you will be required to perform a Reset All - a settings reset is unlikely to do the job. It is recommended to use a tool such as MyPhoneExplorer to create a backup of the data on your phone before performing a Master Reset. Note that you will still lose any games, themes or ringtones present in your phone's memory.
SEUS will currently install the following firmware revisions for UK phone brands:
K850
Unbranded UK (CDA102511/2) - R1EA037
O2 UK (CDA102511/41) - R1EA037
Vodafone UK (CDA102511/15) - R1DA038
Orange UK (CDA102511/47) - R1DA038
3 UK (CDA102511/69) - R1EA037
T-Mobile (CDA102511/12) - R1DA038
Third Party Update Services
Third party firmware updates are available from DaVinci Team, Kulan Kendi & Total GSM. The use of third party solutions will theoretically void your warranty (although in practice the phone vendor is unlikely to notice) so should only be used in preference to SEUS for debranding purposes or updating a problematic phone locked out of SEUS by the service provider.
Drivers
Drivers for all current Sony Ericsson phones can be downloaded from EMMA.

How come it scores so much worse than the k800 in the benchmarks?

As of now WotanServer has no support for this new platform. I sent an email to them and they replied that due to the new platform, they had no ETA for K850i.

I'm quite curious about that as well. Looks a bit odd to me, unless it's milliseconds, so that it means that the K850 does it in less time.

Yes, I was rather suprised at the benchmark numbers - certainly slower than the K800, which I guess explains why the UI is more sluggish.
Posted by -Ryan-
The O2 UK firmware is incorrect? My phone is O2 UK branded, and yet it displays R1CA029 as the firmware, with no updates available through SEUS. Is the one you are showing a firmware that is newly released since Sunday?

It is? i remember gsmarena (or mobilereview) stating that the UI was a tat speedier
Posted by mwarner
The UI is definately less responsive & the animations not as smooth as the K800.
Updated the first post with the initial bugs I have found - comments from current users of the phone are more than welcome.
Posted by darrengf
There is another bug which i known has been posted a couple of times and i have checked a few phones for this issue which they do have
Some Video playback is out of sync with the sound (Aprox 3-5 seconds) Video is sluggish too.
The Flash does sometimes does discharge early before the photo is shot, so this may be causing the dark pics that people mention?
There is a Bug in trying to download of the Fun and dowloads of the SE through your phone. The Free software either says phone isnt compatible or error when trying to download, same with the free games.
I think this is more the site than the phone, but it has been reported to Se and confirmed with a few K850i's on different networks having the same problem.
Hope this helps

Definate bugs in this first version of O2 firmware.
Got mine on friday, and on a journey down to London yesterday had a good while to play with it.
First Impressions:
Sometimes when receiving a call or text, the phone will vibrate and about 2 seconds later the screen will come to life to show who it is.. not good
When listening to media player and writing texts, the bottom menu colouring is corrupt. (maybe the theme i am using)
Volume buttons failed to respond in media player once. Had to restart.
When using media player, the whole phone responds very slowly at times.
Crashed once in camera mode while altering some settings.
I have also had the dark photo problem, but i think this is because of the poor placement of the light sensor. There is a leaflet in the box Re correct usage.
Also, taking video in a nightclub even with AF light on results in dark video.
I hope they release a new firmware soon..because otherwise this phone is the best one yet

** I havnt had that yet, however some of my pics have been corrupt **
One thing i have noticed which i think its a quirk. When you unlock the phone, (from the black screen)
The top half the keypad comes on for a second before the bottom half. Any one noticed this?
This is not a bug but a request SE. Please can we have the Option to view the clock in standby. Im sick of pressing a button to see if i have a message. Pretty please

wot do you mean by that?! on K750 & K800/810 when you want to view your clock on standby, press volume buttons and the screen will light up but not showing your phone standby screen but the clock. is that what you mean?
or doesnt the k850 have that one already?
if so, i guess we should ask
to make a light functions as a reminder if we have an unread SMS message, or an unanswered CALL.
keypad lights should blink once every 30secs something like that.

Well even the standby clock on my K790a is barely effective because the screen auto dims so well that I often DO press a volume button to light it up. This is within subway and florescent lighting.
Personally I'd rather have the STAPLE of all :ericsson: and
phones to return : Status screen.
However ... why is it when SE makes 2 models for different regions that slightly differ in settings ... this FORUM ONLY has information on " 1 " of the two???!?!?!
K800 & K790a/i BOTH are VERY well sold across the world and BOTH should be considered when posted a good thread for information. Yet all too often this doesn't happen.
SOrry to the thread OP about taking this kind of fit here but I do appreciate the work you do - its just fustrating and one sided in other threads - one's I don't have bookmarked to post this reply on.
back on top ...
When is the next firmware update?
Posted by max_wedge
clock in sleep mode is missing from K850 UI. I agree with Prom1 that it's not always visible, but it often is and I find it very useful.
The answer is to have a brighter clock in sleep mode - just the numbers a bit whiter, it would effect battery life hardly at all.

It pains me to say this, buy the K850 is a bit of a disappointment for me, especially compared to previous platform advances (K610, K700, K750, K800) where the functionaility was at least as good as it's predecessor and there were solid advances in the platform. The sort of things I mean are:
- D Pad usability
- Lack of Pause/Resume button on the phone - especially as this doesn't function on the HPM-82 either!
- Inferior flash photography to K800
- No standby clock / information
- Noticably slower UI
- Inferior benchmarks, indicating a slower CPU
These shortcomings wouldn't be such a problem if there were significant platform advances, but there's not really a lot in this release apart from the new media player, which is OK but far less usable due to the lack of instantly accesible Play/Pause functionailty!

why would they use a SLOWER cpu??
I really hope its all in the firmware...

I'm excited about K850, but the initial reports of slowness are worrying. Though it is possibly just firmware problems.
I can live with the lack of sleep mode clock, but I'm a little worried about the missing pause button. Perhaps music can be paused some other way, it seems quite bizzare to remove the pause button. I can only assume this is more of an effort to differentiate Walkman and Cybershot models. It's really stupid because it turns a device that can be used for three main purposes (phone, camera, and mp3player) into a much more limited device. All for the sake of ONE little button and stupid branding games.
I have no problem with branding through styling, infact I like the cybershot branding, but functionality should be kept well out of the equation.
Posted by mwarner
> why would they use a SLOWER cpu??
Presumably for reduced power consumption or reduced cost. Usually this gets done automatically by the CPU manufacturer using a smaller process, but perhaps not this year!
> I'm a little worried about the missing pause button. Perhaps
> music can be paused some other way
Me too - I could live with it if my HPM-82's Play/Pause and FF/RW buttons worked, but they doesn't - only the volume!
> I can only assume this is more of an effort to differentiate Walkman
> and Cybershot models.
I tend to agree. It seems odd in my eyes to put in a more advanced media player and then have no readily accesible control mechanism for it! I will be mightily pissed off if it is a deliberate move to stop the Play/Pause buttons working on external headphones to force you to use the Walkman branded phones.

Well after using the phone more and more and using other K850i's I and a few collegues have come accross just a few more problems with the current firmware.
1) If you recevie a voice mail, you are notified that a voice mail message has been left on the main screen, however the voice mail icon on the screen doesnt show. (O2) not tried on another network yet.
2) When you connect the phone via the usb cable, You cant see the ringtone folder (Not on o2 phones any way)
3) Phone doesnt support Mp4 tunes and doesnt support some jpeg photos. Both K750, K800 does support these as this is where they have come from.
4) When the phone is connected to USB. On trasnfering a picture, the picture has duplicated it 4 times and over rid one of the original SE photos.
5), The flash Def doesnt always sink when the pic has ben taken, or the flash doesnt always go of (Confirmed on other K850i's)
6) I can also confirm that sometimes the Shutter doesnt always open. On sime phones its fine and on others it just doesnt open all the time (o2 phones as well)
If there are any others I will post asap.

God, I'll add my support for the standby clock. Why it was removed is a complete mystery. Obviously the development department wasn't quite on form.
Posted by darrengf
I think that we need to email SE regarding the stand by clock.
Not that it will do any good as it never does. But i think they should have given us the option for us to switch it on and of.

This all worries me. I presumed I'd be getting a K850 straight away, but two things concern me. Can people give further details of these two issues:
1. Is video playback really worse than the K800? I use my phone for watching M3-ripped DVDs more than anything else - does anyone know what bitrates work on the K850?
2. MP4 audio is not supported?! You have GOT to be kidding me! You mean it cannot play HE-AACv2 files? I have loads of albums ripped with M3 to .m4a on my K800. Will these not work?
Thanks for any further info

1. ** The video quality is worse no doubt about that. (Clarity is worse) but the speed is fine. Speach is fine but about 5 seconds out from the picture on most formats
2.**The phone currenlty says, this file is not supported and you get to choose skip the file or skip all. ** ** But we havnt tried all formats **

I find the video is far better quality than the k800. You just need to get the bit rates right.
Has anyone prompted SE to this forum yet?

hello all, first time poster but something i had to add
i got this phone on the monday, and noticed pretty much the same issue with the sleep mode timer. but something caught my eye yesterday whilst locking the phone, something which makes me believe that the lack of the clock wasn't a choice they made, but rather a design fault. the reason i say this is because i actually saw the clock for about a second!
i've tried to replicate it with no luck, but as an educated guess the issue is not with the lack of a clock, but rather that the screen completely switches itself off not giving the opportunity for the clock to show. the solution to this would obviously be something in a new firmware update, but alas i don't know of any active way to report bugs to SE.
just in case anyone would like to know, the phone is on VFUK.

It was probably because the clock *is* there...Just you have to push the volume/zoom buttons up or down to see it. It hasn't been removed entirely, just in the way it used to be able to be viewed while the screen was off apart from the clock.

did you all notice that this firmware version(R1CA029) is similar to k750's R1CA021?
well, all phones in their releases have something wrong? but this is supposed to be a K flagship. dissapointing, imo. let's wait more firmwares for the future.

I would be interested to see a white paper or something that confirms this. It seems odd that benchmark numbers are lower and the UI speed is lower when the resolution of the screen is the same as the K800.

Heh heh ... that is one way of looking at it! Personally I am considering sending it back to O2 and waiting for another interesting phone to be released, which is not like me at all - I love playing with new SE platforms, but this one lacks some of the basic functionaility I am used to with the previous generation platform.

Nah dont do that.
It is interesting, You havnt had this much fun since the K700-K750i with all the bugs.
I do agree though I was expecting a little more, But i still like the phone any how

It seems that setting the stabiliser on causes the camera to ignore the ISO setting you have given it. It also disables the focus assist triple LED.
In the following pic, the black text is what I have set in the menus (and is reflected by the little icons). The red text is what the camera actually did when the photo was taken.

It's interesting to see that on SE's site my HPM-82 is considered compatible with the K850 - maybe all is not lost and a future firmware will enable the functionality of the remote. My only concern is that they have considered that remote control is now only for W series phones and will never be enabled for newly released K series phones.
Does anyone have a more modern headset with remote control, e.g. HPM-90, HBS-DS970/980 etc to find out whether they are fully compatible?

i got a generic unbranded k850i
how do find out the CDA or whateva

but then where and where is it exactly written
also hope they give us the option to change the left softkey to something other than media
and a media player update with a refresh option (can't seem to completely remove the plutonium track from the phone it stays in meida player)

A200 requires more processing power, which is why it scores worse.

1) I've now got "Operation Failed" when I try and go to Applications or Games (also means I can't install any new content). Seems that this means the file system is corrupt. Even master reset doesn't work. Sorry, but having had it for less than 48 hours I am NOT going to start messing around trying to reflash the blasted thing!!
2) You can't enter all symbols in the email client for settings, so for Google Mail (where you need to enter recent:username@gmail.com), you must go into notes, enter :, go to copy all, exit, go back to email, open settings and then paste in the data. It seems SE figured you would only need a few characters, but not all usernames are plain letters and numbers.
3) If you're listening to music, and view the camera album, using the zoom buttons (i.e. volume) means it adjusts the volume at the same time it zooms in and out! Cue no music, or eardrum busting music!
4) Not so much a bug, but an oversight; the touch sensitive buttons frequently stop responding, or there's a delay. On some menus you might have something like "Send & Receive", which then changes to "Cancel". It's possible to see that it will do the chosen task, then immediately cancel the process because it's responded twice. This is bad UI design.
I'm sure I'll find more in due course...
