scotsboyuk's Cultured Drinker Thread

This is a thread for those of us who enjoy the finer drinks in life. I am not talking about the gut rot that is alcopops or some cheap tuppeny lager that would be better served in a brown paper bag on a street corner than grace the hand of the refined drinker. If those are your drinks then this thread is not for you.

On the other hand, if you appreciate drinks with subtlety and power, drinks which raise your expectations, and which add to the evening then this thread is for you. I am talking about drinks for real men.

Every man should have three basic drinks:

Relaxing Drink

This is the drink that you enjoy at home. When you have come in from a hard day at work and you want to relax you want a drink that eases you into the evening and soothes the cares of the day away.

My own favourite is a scotch. I sometimes take it with ice or soda, but usually straight. Please only use good quality scotch, there are many excellent blends to choose from although I would recommend Johnnie Walker myself.

Please never mix good scotch with lemonade,coke or any other soft drink. Water is the preferred mixer and please try to ensure that it is soft water at that. Soda may also be used and makes for a very nice drink. One can of course use ice too.

Evening Drink

This is the drink that you have when out with friends for the evening. Personally I take a Martini, a Gin Martini. Insist on good quality alcohol; Bombay Sapphire is a nice gin although one does enjoy Tanqueray too.

Sipping Drink

When the women have retired to the drawing room and it's just the men left at the table you need a suitable drink to see you through the conversation. My own choice is a good cognac. Again insist upon a good cognac as it will slip down the throat unopposed rather than barge its way down. My own favourite is Hine.

If you're on gin, you can't beat a ice bottle of Plymouth Dry...

@scots....

I've got to agree with u on the scotch side!!! PEOPLE PLEASE TAKE NOTE! A good quality scotch is going to cost a fair whack to buy! It is for a reason! I love a nice scottish whisky but tend to go for either a nice Lagavulin or a nice Laphroaig!

Lovely cask taste to these, a lot like burnt oak! but oh so nice!!! and if its a special ocassion i'll pop open my lovely bottle of Caol Ila which i've had for a good 5yrs now!!!!

And i gotta agree that alcopops strip ur stomach of anythin good...

I reckon we should discuss food that goes well with the food as well...

Love to have a nice BBQ'd salmon or tuna steak to go with the laphroaig as they both compiment each other v.well!

Tut tut! He said no alcopops. Well i like Southern Comfort and Smirnoff Norsk or Nordic Berries, oh and you can't beat a martini, but only sweet for moi!

lol similar with me....although once in a while they are alright...

that is except for vodka....which i seem to be able to chuck donw my neck

Hehehe well yeah but nothing wrong with topping it up.

Jack Daniels is quite nice too, but i prefer the weaker ladies whiskey lol.

mmmm not one for whiskey!

I tend to drink "mothers ruin" either "bombay" or "slow" whilst out socialising!

I enjoy a good Red to come home to, I find it very relaxing!

As regards shots "Southern Comfort" on the rocks has to be my tipple!

But you really cant beat a double "Baileys" with a shot of Cognac to finish the night off!

@sputnik69

Laphroaig is marvellous, it's my favourite single malt. I tend to limit myself to one or two though because the palate becomes dull after that and a huge part of Laphroaig's magnificence is its taste. Of course with a single malt one must never take it with anything but soft water or a few splashes of ice (made from soft water).

@Nanu

Baileys is a rather delish drink, I enjoy the odd one now and again at the conclusion of a good meal.

I dont drink that often but on the rare occasion I enjoy sake with dinner. or in the evening sometimes have either absinthe (depends where am and if can get it) or a drambue neat. also never more than 2 as prefer to enjoy it along with keep my senses.

Jack daniels would be my tipple, but at christmas or birthdays, I like to buy a bottle of Makers Mark, very nice indeed.

As said before, never mix a quality whiskey with coke, lemonade, etc.

Posted by scotsboyuk
I am rather partial to a pink gin; wet the glass with angostura bitters and then fill with a good dose of gin. Delish!

am i cultere enought if i drink wine and champagne? I cannot remember the name of the name because it was at a restaurent and i did not purchase it.

Posted by scotsboyuk
A champers! That really is a drink of drinks! I love Pol Roger although any good champagne is a delight.

Rather partial to southern comfort and various creme liquors myself

Posted by Brightspark
red bull & vodka

Posted by Adz21
So do you not drink any beer or lager or do you just steer clear of the cheap nasty ones?

Posted by Danny_BFC
I dont drink lol.

But if i do, its WoodPecker or Carling lol.

@mweb

Southern Comfort is like cough medicine!

@Sparky

I like Guinness, that's a man's drink (and hefty women too). Proper ales are most acceptable as is a gentle glass of crisp cool cider on a warm summer's eve as one looks out over the village bathed in the lambent flame of a setting sun.

what kind of Ciders you like scotsboy? i take it its not all tht "skid" like white lightning and stuff...how about magners and bulmers?

@danny...Yh he has "a way with words" lol

Posted by MWEB
Ha White lightning is real tramps fare, the church next door to me gives free meals out to the homeless and they always hide their booze in my garden before they go in .

My favourite drink would have to be a good whiskey mixed with coke and Ribena, I kid you not! Easily my favourite drink.

Posted by scotsboyuk
@Daedalus85

Have you gone mad?! Whiskey mixed with coke and Ribena! It's an abomination against nature and I shan't have anything to do with it! It's frightening enough that you mix good Irish whiskey like that, but please tell me you don't inflict that blasphemy upon a fine scotch.

@A L 3 X

I do not frequent the cider barrel often, but when I do partake of it's sweet refreshing libations I don't mind a glass of Scrumpy, although I think I would prefer a home brewed cider; something that has the love, attention and care of homespun hands to its name.

smirn off. mint leaves, lime, and sprite

or

bacardi white rum and coke with ice

or

FOSTERS !!!!

Posted by Daedalus85
Lol, well, when I say fine, any will do, seeing as I'm a tight bastard it's usually the crappy Tesco Value or Asda Smartprice (although the former beats the latter).

The Ribena gives it a fruity kick. It's either that or replace the coke with Dr.Pepper

Posted by scotsboyuk
At least it's not a single malt! I'm not too clued up on the supermarket vintages, but they aren't actually too bad for every day drinking. Of course some of the more ... rambunctious, supermarket blends may indeed have to be tamed with a little splash of something.

Incidentally, and yes I am going to be pedantic about this, whiskey is Irish whiskey, not scotch. Scotch is whisky. Now you can sleep easy in your bed tonight for knowing that!

And JD? technically I know it's a bourbon but that's still a whisky/whiskey

also, Scrumpy, if you like that, get your chops round some Westons, my mates swear by the stuff, I myself can't stand cider.

Posted by Daedalus85
Yes, your right, Asda Smartprice and Tesco Value neat tastes and smells like industrial paint stripper (not to say I've ever tried that personally, but you get the idea...), hence the Blackcurrent to cover it up with a lovely fruity kick.
